Rax - Gingerbread Man (Halloween Special)

20-year-old London based rapper Rax launches part 3 of the ‘The Black Crook Project’ with the release of a Halloween special titled ‘Gingerbread Man’. Based around Charles M. Barras' 1866 musical 'The Black Crook', Rax’s current project sees the unique wordsmith release 1 new video every 2 weeks for 6 months.

Rax honed his microphone skills from the age of 15, before signing with fast rising musical enterprise Clear Cut Entertainment / Audio Surveillance Records. The charismatic emcee then released his first solo long player titled 'The Auditions' in 2009. The mixtape went on to receive over 1000 downloads within the first few days of its release, with hard copies of the project proving equally as popular on the streets of London. Rax then released several viral videos (including his unforgettable 'I Wanna Rock' remix which clocked up over 30,000 views on YouTube), before putting plans in motion for his most ambitious project to date - #TBCP.

The first two videos from TBCP have clocked up 15,000 and 35,000 views on YouTube respectively, with expectations even higher for forthcoming releases.

The third video from the project, titled ‘Gingerbread Man’, is a Halloween special, which sees Rax deliver his signature wordplay over an intense string-led instrumental. Combining tongue in cheek punch lines with a contemporary yet accomplished delivery, Rax sits comfortably somewhere between authentic hip hop and commercially viable music, which is all capped off with a dose of refreshingly youthful exuberance. The audio is accompanied by a fantastically creative visual, which was co-directed by Rax himself.

Sway - Still Speedin' the Official Video

In 2004 the UK’s urban scene took a new direction pioneered by then 22 year old rapper Sway. With a plan to make himself heard and respected as a producer, writer and namely an artist he independently promoted and released his mixtapes “This Is My Promo” Vol. 1 & 2. These releases proceeded to change the rules of the game as they earned him awards and accolades even before the release of his debut album.  Off the back of these early endeavours Sway went up against US heavyweights 50 Cent and The Game in the 2005 Mobo’s as Best Hip-Hop Newcomer still without a having released an album.

By 2006 his debut “This Is My Demo” was one of the most eagerly awaited albums of the year and lived up to expectations which The Independent described as; “not just the best British rap albums in years, but simply the best rap album in years, full stop”. Self producing more than fifty percent of the album Sway also worked alongside emerging talents such as Al Shux who later went on to produce ‘Empire State Of Mind’ for Jay Z. Together they forged a sound to match Sway’s lyrical ingenuity. Sway’s debut album is considered a landmark for British “urban” and hip-hop music receiving widespread acclaim. The record received further mainstream endorsement when it was selected as one of the Mercury Music Prize ‘Albums Of The Year’ – one of the most respected accolades in UK music which honours only 12 albums each year.

From the release of this album came sell out tours in the USA, Europe and Africa, award show performances and collaborations with top artists across the globe including Akon, Kaiser Chiefs, Lemar, Gyedu Blay Ambolley, Craig David, Lupe Fiasco, Chamillionaire, Ian Brown, Madness, Ali Campbell (UB40) and Jamelia. Having an ability to identify raw talent Sway still took time to work with unknown artists such as Mr Hudson and Chipmunk helping to facilitate label deals and provide them with early direction. In 2007 Sway’s accolades started to reach beyond the UK winning the BET (Black Entertainment Television) award for Best International Artist, the first time a UK artist had been entered, let alone won. The award was driven by a public vote, and was testament to the fact his lyrical prowess and achievements had by no means gone unnoticed outside of the UK.

In the run up to his second album Sway had become one of the UK’s most sought after rappers. When “The Signature LP” dropped late 2008 the strong ties he had forged with Akon were made official with their collaborative single “Silver & Gold”. The video’s viewings topping 5 million on YouTube soon after it’s release. This album was even more ambitious than his debut demonstrating his abilities as a producer, even drafting in a 22 piece orchestra, live musicians and guest appearances including Sting’s daughter Coco, fellow MOBO award winner 2face Idibia and Lemar. Though much of the album was born out of tougher times - due to loss of loved ones who passed away during its creation - it still kept true his signature style of witty wordplay and razor-sharp punch lines whilst demonstrating an air of maturity like no other urban artist had yet achieved.

Sway’s prolific abilities have earned him worldwide respect and this has enabled him to form a strong alliance with Giorgio Tuinfort, the producer who masterminded Gwen Stefani’s “Sweet Escape” as well as becoming Akon’s main in house producer. This recognition by major US rap talent has also stretched to artists Kanye West and Pharrell Williams. Sway has also worked with other US production talent such as Emile Haynie who has produced for Eminem and Kanye West. Being the only other rapper to feature on Lupe Fiasco’s 3rd studio album “Lasers’ is further testament to Sway’s international acclaim.

To date Sway has received many major awards, sold over 100,000 albums, and released seven mixtapes, of which “The Delivery 1 & 2” are his most recent, paving the way for his long awaited third studio album “The Deliverance”. The first Delivery Mixtape was hailed by The Times as “a mixtape of album standards” and had more than 10,000 downloads in the first week with the 2nd doing equally as well and to date them collectively having more than 50,000 downloads. The Deliverance album is due for release early 2012 and set to be an awe inspiring record demonstrating the showmanship and versatility that his fans have come to expect and prove that Sway truly deserves the title of the UK’s No.1 Lyricist as well as a producer and writer of the highest international standards. Which is one of the reasons Bucks were excited to have him sign with their publishing company. The lead single from the forth-coming album is “Still Speeding”, which will be released through 3beat Records mid autumn.

Sway's first official track 'Still Speedin'' taken from 'The Deliverance' album coming out soon on 3Beat. Look out for versions with Kano & an undisclosed major US feature dropping soon.

Oxford duo Little Fish set to release book of essays with author

Little Fish are set to publish a book in collaboration with writer Miranda Ward. The New Original Little Fish Paper Club™ Handbook – a collection of essays about rock’n’roll, independence, and what it means to be in a band – will be released in hardback by new crowdfunding-based publishing company Unbound.

The band are looking to get at least 400 fans to order the book in advance; in return, supporters will have their names printed in the back of the book and receive various rewards based on their level of contribution – from access to exclusive downloads and updates to an invitation to join the band in the studio.

Launched earlier this year, Unbound is seeking to revolutionise the publishing industry by giving power to readers, who can choose which projects they want to see made by pledging their support. Authors, in turn, get to pitch ideas for the projects they really want to write. This model appeals to Little Fish, who left label Custard Records earlier this year in order to pursue an independent career.

“We have loads of stories to tell, about life, and about what it’s like to be in a band going from a major label to being totally independent, and about dealing with the changes in the industry,” says singer and guitarist Juju.

Collaboration is a big part of the Little Fish ethos, and independence has allowed them the opportunity to explore different ways of working with other creatives – many of them also in Oxford. They first discussed the book over a drink with Ward in a local pub; a few months later they met the founders of Unbound while busking in Hay-on-Wye, and the idea became a reality.
“We’re writing a book because we love books, we love paper. We’ve been doing stuff on vinyl, and vinyl used to come with these great stories and liner notes. We want to recapture that,” Juju says.

“It’s like liner notes for the process of being in a band,” says Ben, who plays the Hammond. “It’s not a biography, it’s not a history. It’s just using us [Little Fish] as a springboard to talk about what’s going on with culture, the internet, music, DIY, labels, celebrity.”
Announcement of the book comes at the start of a new chapter in Little Fish history. Longtime drummer Nez has just left the band to focus on his family, and so, as a two-piece, Little Fish continue to evolve, developing a new, raw sound while maintaining their eclectic spirit. They released their new single, “Wonderful”, on Monday the 10th of October with a gig at the Camden Barfly, where they were supported by Black Casino and The Ghost as well as poet, compère and fellow Unbound author George Chopping.

They recently recorded an acoustic YouTube version of ‘Wonderful’, with Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes (who produced the single) on guitar, and will be in Singapore for a few gigs in November.

At time of writing, Little Fish need roughly 150 more supporters to ensure their book gets made.

Kate McGill - First Ever Full Band Show at The Borderline London

The lead single, also named Replaced, draws inspiration from artists such as Ellie Goulding and Bon Iver. Replaced’s ambient blend of acoustic guitars and synths highlights the frailty of Kate’s vocal. Explaining the meaning behind the song, Kate says, “On the day it was written, a friend had told me about something my ex-boyfriend had said about me, and I remember being completely bewildered by it as it sounded nothing like him.” This realisation led to Kate creating a song that will reach the hearts of anyone who has seen someone change for the worse.

Kate is a worldwide success on Youtube: she has over 132,000 subscribers to her channel, and has received over 23,000,000 views – all since November 2007. In addition to this, the single Replaced has recently received airplay on Radio 2, with Janice Long airing it on her midweek show, as well recently been added to Q radio playlist.

In an unusual move, hard-copies of a 7 track CD titled Replaced will be available exclusively from Caffè Nero stores across the country. The CD is accompanied by a book which gives listeners insight into Kate’s emergence onto the scene and her rise in popularity. The release of the CD will be accompanied by Café Nero tour , which includes: 34 stores between the 26th September and 20th October and promises to be an intimate affair for her fans. The album will also be available digitally via iTunes.

Madhat Mcgore & Jimmy Snookz feat Skipper Heart On My Sleeve Video

Edinburgh based rapper Madhat Mcgore teams up with North London native Jimmy Snooks for their biggest release to date - a ten track LP fittingly titled 'City 2 City'.

Recorded in just two days and featuring the likes of Eurogang member Villain, Maffiella & Queen Ice Cream aka The Diva Twins, fellow Mudfam Regime members Skipper & Melody Melz, Fedayeen Regime member D Millz, Rago from ITN and Madhat’s fellow scot The Riddlah, the highly anticipated long player displays sharp, intelligent wordplay from two of the UK's most revered underground rhymers. Accompanied by an equally impressive and brilliantly varied backdrop of hiphop-grime-dance infused instrumentals, 'City 2 City' takes the listener on a journey through what is the audio equivalent of a smog filled inner city landscape.

25 year old Edinburgh born Madhat has been writing and producing music for the past 11 years. His debut LP 'Unvarnished Scribbles' received vast critical acclaim, with The Daily Record newspaper hailing the release as "a massive landmark album for Scottish Rap". Following the release of the LP, Madhat decided to leave his record label and began talks with Edinburgh based imprint Music Comes First Records. A contract was swiftly signed, and Madhat continued to raise his profile with the release of several EPs and 'The Theophilus Carter LP', which featured the likes of UK heavyweights Nolay and Klashnekoff. These subsequent releases attracted the attention of Vic Galloway at BBC Radio 1 Scotland, who invited Madhat to the studio for a live session, and paved the way for further strong reviews from the press; “anything Dizzee can do, Madhat can do”, “think Eminem meets Begbie from Trainspotting” and “Scotlands top rapper, no question” being some of the most memorable quotes.
With his latest project, Madhat has delivered his most rounded sounded to date, and teaming up with Mudfam lyricist Jimmy Snooks may ultimately prove to be an accidental stroke of genius. The relentless delivery of perfectly formed vocals, along with the combination of powerful, multicultural accents makes 'City 2 City' a slice of bass heavy, head nod inducing hip hop pie, and one which you won't want to share around.

We are currently pushing the third single from the LP titled 'Heart On My Sleeve'.

The Miserable Rich at St Bride's Church Liverpool

The Miserable Rich announce a fourteen date tour of the UK in unusual venues and with a very curious flavour. The band's third album, Miss You In The Days, is released on Halloween - recorded in Britain's most haunted stately it is a collection of songs inspired by ghosts, poltergeists and other spooky apparitions. All performed and narrated in their own inimitable sophisticated 'Chamber Pop' style.
The band are accompanied on the tour by performance poet Alabaster Deplume, who will be introducing each evening with a set of spine-chilling tales based on the songs from The Miserable Rich's album.
Part funded by PRS Foundation and part by fans via a successful (still running) 'Pledge Music' campaign, the tour begins with a full-on fancy dress Halloween Ball at Westminster Reference Library (a double header with The Real Tuesday Weld) on the 29th October, and visits arts centres, churches and creepy railway arches; there is even one very special show at the aforementioned haunted stately home, Blickling Hall, fittingly enough on Halloween itself...
Lead singer James De Malplaquet explains: "As an experience, how do you top recording an album in a Jacobean Palace, the birthplace of Ann Boleyn? We'd already decided to release the album at Halloween, and wanted to put
together a tour to do it justice. We decided to add a dramatic element to the proceedings, with ghost stories, exclusive acoustic previews in spooky crypts, and a free mix tape for those getting into the spirit and dressing up."
Pledge Music is an increasingly popular fan-funded model where fans 'Pledge' money in exchange for exclusive merchandise, allowing bands to allocate funds to promotion and other costs. In this case - being able to make an album documentary, including this video of the recording of the secret album track, recorded in a haunted pub attic:

WU LYF @ The Kazimier Liverpool

WU LYF or World United: Lucifer Youth Foundation to give them their full title, take to the stage at the packed out Kazimier on Saturday night, from the opening chords their fans began to move as one to the slow build up of heavy pop beats that began to echo across the room. With lead singer, Ellery Roberts, enigmatic style, exaggerated staring at the ceiling and deep rasping vocals, that are extremely reminiscent of Caleb Followill, the many dedicated fans at the front seemed to be entranced by him, their eyes not moving from him and began emulating his every move as if they were part of him.

The gig itself was a heady rock set that took you through a veritable roller coaster of beats, rhythms and bass, with a piano thrown in for good measure. With songs like "Dirt", "Spitting Blood" and "Lucifer Calling" from their debut album, Go Tell Fire To The Mountain, they definitely know how to get a crowd worked up , especially with Lucifer Calling which ended up with the forefront fans being body wave onto the stage due to the frenzy they got themselves into.

For me though the set didn't really flow, with the odd member walking off stage to replenish beers, or dispose of a t shirt etc and at one point being unsure whether the gig had actually finished or not, it hadn't but I'm still not sure whether that was an encore or not!!

Finishing on a brilliant cover of Chris Issak's "Wicked Game"" and a song entitled "You'll never walk alone" (not the Liverpool anthem though much to the disappointment of half the crowd and to the joy of the other half) they sauntered off to cries for more.

You can't deny that these guys have talent, but it would be nice to actually understand what the lead singer was singing about as I couldn't make out any of the lyrics at all. They can be likened to the Kings of Leon in musical style, which is no bad thing at all, just in case you're wondering whether to check these guys out, which i advise you do, but i have to admit I found myself watching the dedicated almost to the point of obsessive fans which had a bigger presence than the band itself.

Friday 21st October:As it approaches twenty five years since their breakthrough album ‘In the Dynamite Jet saloon’, The Dogs D’Amour will make a return to the live arena for five UK shows this December. Now legendary, Dogs D'Amour gigs are surrounded by tales of debauchery and destruction, unadulterated rock 'n' roll antics and excesses.

Fronted by the inimitable Tyla, The Dogs D'Amour were unleashed onto an unsuspecting and somewhat mediocre UK music scene during the mid 1980s. With their ramshackle pirate-meets-Dickens style they pioneered a unique mixture of glam-punk and stonesy rock 'n' roll. They sang songs about sweet sorrows and told torrid tales of destruction - all perpetuated by their ‘do-or-die’ attitude. Their music and style stood out from the rest, as did their iconic artwork created by frontman Tyla. His quirky illustrations of mischievous rock n’ rollers up to no good adorned the bands album covers and sleeves.

The Dogs D’Amour played their debut gig in London, England on April 12th 1983. They had UK chart success with ‘Satellite Kid’, peaking in at Number 26, as well as several other Top 40 singles and albums. From 1994 Tyla focused on his demanding solo career and in 2000, The Dogs release ‘Happy Ever After’, and in 2002 the band opened for Alice Cooper on his European tour. In 2005 Warner Brothers release a best of ‘Heart Shaped Skulls’ featuring new artwork and liner notes from Tyla, plus all their promo videos on a DVD bonus disc. 2006 Tyla tours the Dogs in UK and Europe  for over 100 dates releasing a live DVD/CD of the shows titled ‘Unleashed’ whilst also maintaining a solo career which includes  well received Art Exhibitions in Europe and an extensive 6 month solo tour of the USA in 2007.

And now, 2011, in between all the Dogs activity, Tyla has managed to release an impressive 18 solo albums to date and has recently re-recorded ‘In the Dynamite Jet saloon’ for its 25th Anniversary. He is also set to release his latest solo album ‘Quinguaginta’ marking his 50th year on this earth. In true Tyla style the album is an eclectic mix of songs about real life, heart ache, tragedy and true love and a wonderful collection of soul searching anthems from a man who has never been afraid to put his heart out on the line.
