Merry Christmas from Harvest Sun

A few Christmas words from Harvest sun and news on more gigs for 2012

Right before we go any further we would just like to thank anyone who attended any of our gigs over the past 12 months in any shape or form, sober or straight, we salute you and would like to wish you a very merry Christmas.  We've had some great shows from early in the year with Gruff Rhys in February to the journey Wooden Shjips took us on at the Kazimier in September then onto Roddy Frame and Other Lives a month or so back.

The year isn't all over music-wise though, we've got a cracking New Years Party at The Static Gallery, a class of 2012 if you will.  It's gonna be a cracker.  We have
Loved Ones, The Sundowners, Endeci, It's Murder Beams, Grand Lunar and Cantmixwontmixshdntmixdontmix DJ's keeping the disco going long into the night.  Tickets only £6 from Probe Records and ticketline RIGHT NOW.

Now for the nitty gritty, since our last mail out we've added some great new shows to our 2012 fixture list.  These are
Cass McCombs, Veronica Falls, High Places, Diagrams, Lindo Ortega, Phantom Limb and Harvest Sun all timers, The Handsome Family.

Most of these should all appear at least once in everyone's collection.  If not, re-write that Christmas list cos every one is worth checking out.  Take Lindi Ortega for instance, a relatively unknown Country singer from Canada; well she's just beaten the likes of
Fucked Up, Chilly Gonzalez and Timber Timbre to the #1 Canadian album of the year over at Snob Music.  High praise indeed.

We could go on all day, but there isn't any sign of a dud in them there gigs.  Here they all are here...

 Altered Images re-scheduled date

Eric’s, Mathew St, Liverpool

Saturday 25 February 2012

£20 www.ticketmaster.co.uk Doors 7.30pm

One of the brightest stars in the 80s new wave sky, Altered Images are best remembered for their no.1 single 'Happy Birthday', and bubbly lead singer Claire Grogan.

The Singer and Actress Clare Grogan started her 30 year long career as a schoolgirl Popstar in her band Altered Images.

By day she was studying for her A Levels and at night she was touring with Siouxsie and the Banshees, playing festivals alongside Echo And The Bunnymen, The Human League, U2 and recording sessions for legendry DJ, John Peel.

The band were signed to Epic Records in 1981 the same year Clare appeared in the BAFTA winning comedy Gregory’s Girl directed by Bill Forsyth.  Clare never got to finish her exams – she wasn’t too upset!

Altered Images quickly had worldwide success, selling millions of records, which topped the charts in several countries.  They recorded 3 Top 10 Albums – Happy Birthday, Pinky Blue and Bite. They had 6 Top Ten Singles working with world famous producers  - Martin Rushent, Tony Visconti and Mike Chapman. They were voted Best New Group at the NME awards the same year they were invited to play at The Royal Command Performance.

After an eighteen-year gap in performing with Altered Images, Clare was persuaded to sing their hits again and continues to play in front of huge and enthusiastic crowds.

Altered Images have an array of artistes who happily describe themselves as fans, from Florence and the Machine to The Foo Fighters. Their hit song Happy Birthday has been covered by Courtney Love, The Ting Tings, The Wedding Party to name but a few.  Their songs constantly turn up in the soundtracks to movies and adverts and Clare recently performed on stage with hit band of the moment, The Drums, who described her as ‘their favorite pop idol’.

For the past 30 years Clare has worked extensively in Film, Television, Theatre and Radio.  Appearing as a presenter on BBC6 Music, BBC London Radio, BBC Scotland, STV, SKY 1, VH1, the One Show and more.  She has had roles in dozens of TV and Radio Dramas. Including some of the UK’s best-loved TV shows, Eastenders, Red Dwarf, Father Ted, Taggart, Sea Of Souls. Her film credits include, Gregory’s Girl, Comfort and Joy, Jilting Jo, The Penalty King, The Smallest Game In Town.  She was a finalist in this year’s Let’s Dance for Comic Relief. To add to her Theatre credits the Award winning play write Russell Barr wrote the part of Scrachett with her in mind for his play Vantastic - which she performed last year in London.  Over the years she has contributed to various Magazines including The Word, Red and Preview.  And her debut novel Tallulah and the Teenstars reached No 2 in the Waterstone Children’s Book Chart.

Clare is enormously proud of her role as patron of the British Association Of  Adoption And Fostering (BAAF) and speaks regularly on the subject to help high light the plight of children in care who are desperate for parents.

Clare can be seen next on TV as the wayward mum Shelly of lead character Mimi in Channel 4’s new series of Skins.  She is currently filming a new music show for STV called Scotland’s Greatest Album which airs from October 4th. And once again she will be putting her band together to play Altered Images Greatest Hits.

MusicMafiaUK presents...Jeff Green

  1. MusicMafiaUK presents...Jeff Green

Growing up in the 70’s in Northern California, Jeff Green was exposed to many Country and Southern Rock bands of the day, including The Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brother, Poco, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Molly Hatchet, The Outlaws,  and The Charlie Daniels Band.  Although these bands were to play a large part in Jeff’s later career, it was the influence of the Progressive Rock bands, Yes, Rush, The Who and Pink Floyd (particularly David Gilmour’s solo in the song “Money”) that initially grabbf’s attention.

Jeff’s musical training began at the tender age of seven with the clarinet, encouraged by his Grandfather who was a huge Benny Goodman fan.  Piano lessons followed but didn’t last too long as the “otherworldly” tones of Progressive Rock ushered in his adolescence and led Jeff to his first guitar

A much beloved “Woolworth’s Top 20”, purchased on one of Jeff’s summer visits to his mother and younger brother in England.  Despite guitar strings the size of telephone wires, and an extremely “uncomfortable action”, that would make a grown man cry; Jeff pursued his newly found instrument with enthusiasm and diligence.

The album, Jessica,  has received great reviews from Classic Rock Prog magazine, The Classic Rock Society, Fireworks mag, Prog Sphere, Guitar Techniques mag just to name a few. It has some amazing guitar work on this album that I think you will love. The album includes Mike Stobbie (Pallas), Pete Riley (Keith Emerson, John Wetton) and UK guitar legend Phil Hilborne

Jeff's album inspiration concerns a very sad event in his life with all profits from this album are being donated to a Hospital in Essex, UK.

Considering the subject matter Jeff has made this album very uplifting and inspiring with no hint of melancholy as you might expect.

Read the complete story here, which is a must: http://web.mac.com/jeffrgreen/Jeff_Green/Jessica.html

Jeff is currently recording his new album that will include Alan Reed, Sean Filkins and Mike Stobbie.

Beth Jeans Houghton to play Eric's Liverpool

Beth Jeans Houghton playing Eric's Liverpool

Tuesday 21 February £9

Tickets available from www.ericslive.com  / www.ticketmaster.co.uk or Eric’s box office a 0151-236 9994

Beth Jeans Houghton comes to Liverpool in support of her forthcoming new album, Yours Truly, Cellophane Nose, due for release next February on Mute. It introduces one of the most self-assured new artists of the year, a pop polymath whose blend of psychedelia, glam rock and chain gang folk is quite unlike anything else you’re likely to hear in 2012. Like her utterly unique stage outfits, it’s made from disparate individual elements that wouldn’t work on paper, but sing out like a holy choir in the execution. Asked what people can expect from her debut album, Beth Jeans Houghton utters one word: “Thunder”.

On Atlas, a pounding drum beat and twanging guitars give way to soaring vocals and even a freaky spoken word bit, it’s is entirely typical of an album that’s anything but typical. Having spoken about wanting her music to sound like she’s marching to war, the album presents her as a psychedelic Boudica, rousing the troops with near-operatic vocals one minute and counting the dead in moments of smoky-voiced melancholia the next.

Adding muscle to Beth’s far-ranging vocals are her band The Hooves Of Destiny. Comprising Dav Shiel (drums, vocals samples) Rory Gibson (bass, vocals), Ed Blazey (guitar, trumpet, vocals) and Findlay Macaskill (violin, vocals), they’re a crack unit recruited from Beth’s native North East.

Three years in the making, this album was created with producer Ben Hiller (Blur / Elbow / Depeche Mode). Initially, Beth had reservations about working with such a big name behind the desk, being almost punk-like in her attitude and resolutely independent in every facet of her career. “I thought he’d be one of those guys who stamps his sound all over an album,” she says. “I almost didn’t even go for a drink with him to talk about it, but he told me he wanted to do it for fun and be creative. And he said he had a lot of toys in the studio that we could play with, which won me over.”

Over time, Ben and Beth developed a harmonious working relationship, and the album changed shape many times in the making: “I write so many songs so quickly they become irrelevant to me really fast, so it’s hard to put together a set that I’m happy with over time,” says the singer. “Ben and I had a rule: if there was anything about a song that either of us weren’t happy with, we’d scrap it altogether.” Unusually, the album features a song that Beth wrote about her first relationship at 17, named Veins, which sits alongside brand new tracks like the ever-changing single Dodecahedron.

Songs about boys and dreams have never sounded so forceful and proud as these, and there’s plenty more to unpick in Beth’s hugely inventive lyrics: The Barley Skinny Bone Tree is about her mother, and the birth of her brother, and as for NightSwimmer, “When I tell an audience that NightSwimmer is about a guy who sweats a lot in his sleep, I’m not joking,” says Beth.
Having recorded the album without a record deal to ensure complete creative control, it will be released on Mute, the label described by Houghton as “The one that still believed in my record after everyone else had gone to the pub.” Now ready for release, Beth sees the album as “an animal I'm preparing to ride. Grooming it, feeding it, braiding its hair, and I feel that Ben has built me a saddle that is both practical and comfortable to use. And because of this I feel confident in its release.” Don’t expect such an agonising wait for the next one. “I’m terrified of dying before I do everything I want to do,” she says, somewhat perversely given that she’s still only 21. “It’s a race to get everything out.”

New 1500 capacity venue 1 Mount Pleasant to open in Liverpool

New 1500 capacity venue 1 Mount Pleasant to open in Liverpool

The team behind Eric's on Mathew Street, which was re-launched in September with a special gig by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and has seen such diverse acts including Trombone ShortyTerrorvision, Jim Lauderdale and The Christians play the famous cellar – are opening a new 1,500 capacity live venue in the City. 1 Mount Pleasant will open its doors this evening at the old 0151 building.

Owner John Lynch and his team, music director Ethan Allen, promoter Lee Butler and commercial manager Carl Burleigh have promised the venue will have a wide appeal. Mr Lynch said: “It's going to be a multi-purpose use venue which will appeal to all different types of people. We’ll host sporting events, cabaret, live music and touring bands. Size wise we fit snugly between the O2 Academy and the Mountford Hall. Liverpool needs another independent performance space.”

The venue launches on Friday 16 December with Now That's What I Call a Works Night Out in conjunction with Radio City 96.7’s Cash For Kids charity. Featuring a host of DJ’s as well as live music from Xander & The Peace Pirates and Ultrabeat.

Saturday night BBC Radio Merseyside’s Billy Butler will host an evening with the American Drifters. Mr Lynch added: “We are looking forward to 2012 and hope it will be a great year for live music in Liverpool.”

FlickaDotCircus release their debut single Rabbits Vein and e.p. FGT

FlickaDotCircus release their debut single Rabbits Vein and e.p. FGT

East London based group FlickaDotCircus follow up the release of their debut single ‘Rabbits Vein’ with a self produced 10 track EP titled ‘FGT’.
Consisting of producer LOA, MCs Alfalfa and KillaNick, as well as various other DJ members, FlickaDotCircus have been formulating their sound together in the studio for just half a year, whilst performing separately at events across the UK including Rhythm Factory, Liverpool Barfly, Cargo, Richmix and the Secret Garden Party. Creating what they describe themselves as "interesting, non-regurgitated hip-hop", FlickaDotCircus are keen to avoid being branded as a 'UK urban act’; in fact, they're keen to avoid any pigeon holes at all.
The group’s debut long player, titled ‘FGT’, welcomes the listener into FlickaDotCircus’ world of abstract sampling, processed drum breaks, gut trembling sub basses and inspired wordplay. Despite containing obvious influences from underground hip hop, critics would be foolish to assume ‘FGT’ falls cleanly within such a clear cut category. Throughout its 10 tracks, listeners are treated to a range of carefully crafted instrumentation, including beautifully epic string and brass lines, jungle themed drum breaks, bouncing synthesized basses and even XX-esque guitar riffs (the outstanding final track on the EP, ‘Ah Nah’, being a perfect example of the level of production on show). MCs Alfalfa and KillaNick serve up a range of concept driven vocal performances, which at times familiarise themselves with the likes of Foreign Beggars and even Kool G Rap (thanks to some of the multi syllable rhyme patterns on offer), but mostly sounding like nothing you’ve ever heard before.  This blend of influences and genres means fans of forward thinking British music will find as much solace in the EP as hardened fans of already established sounds, and guides listeners perfectly into the extraordinarily twisted world of FlickaDotCircus.

Tickets On Sale – 9am Friday 16th December 2011

Following a string of well received international dates throughout 2011 and the most recent UK concerts at The Lowry, Salford, Peter Hook And The Light have announced a UK tour for May and June 2012, visiting a number of cities for the first time to perform Joy Division’s debut album “Unknown Pleasures and returning to London for their second ever concert in the capital playing Closer.
Beginning in Liverpool, the tour sees Hooky and The Light play their second ever Scottish gig in Glasgow before returning to England with dates in Nottingham, Sheffield and Oxford, all of which are “Unknown Pleasures” concerts whereas the London date sees the first ever “Closer” concert in the city.
Tickets for all these concerts go on sale from 9am on Friday 16th December 2011.
Playing the albums sequentially and in track order, both Martin Hannett produced LPs are considered seminal, much loved classics and their influence remains pervasive today, both with fans and for the many bands, influenced by and who have taken on the template of Joy Division’s sound in the modern era.
“Unknown Pleasures” is considered one of the most stunning debut albums ever released and “still powerful enough to floor you 30 years on” (NME) while  on“Closer” Hannett’s incandescent production permeates the record alongside a band that had grown much in confidence approaching their second album.
Both albums have come to yield many landmark tracks, “Unknown Pleasures” with “Disorder” “Insight”, “New Dawn Fades”, and “She’s Lost Control” while Closer, considered “a start to finish masterpiece” by Pitchfork Media counts “Atrocity Exhibition”, “Heart And Soul” and “Twenty Four Hours” amongst its many highlights.
With each album in full during the concert, The Light also turn to Hooky’s early repertoire to perform many other Warsaw and Joy Division tracks, some of which have never been played live previously.
Since The Light’s debut of “Unknown Pleasures” in May 2010 at The Factory, Manchester, Hooky and the band have performed across festivals including Benicassim, Vintage, 1234 and toured much of mainland Europe, Australia, North and South America. 2012 will see a stretch of central European dates and a UK date in the North West in February at Buxton Opera House before the band return to Australia prior to the full UK Tour in May and June.

RD returns with his brand new smash single 'Chasing Elizabeth'.

RD returns with his brand new smash single Chasing Elizabeth

21 year old rapper RD returns to the scene with his brand new smash single titled 'Chasing Elizabeth'.
Born and raised in Barking (London, UK), RD took his first steps into the grime scene at just 13, performing at youth clubs and pirate stations from Dagenham to Hackney with his cousins S-Kid and Haystee. In 2006 RD met East London MC Jammin, and the pair went on to form UK collective Conspiracy Theory alongside fellow artist Imz. The collective then went on to become Nationality, and it was around this time that RD decided to take a step away from the industry to further craft his sound away from the limelight.
Fast forward to 2011, and RD is now set to return to the forefront of the scene with his brand new single titled 'Chasing Elizabeth'. The track sees RD outline his mission in life to chase the Queens Head (money) over a fidgety, synth led instrumental. Despite his young age, RD relies on his experience to craft an assertively strong flow whilst delivering some pleasingly epigrammatic punchlines for good measure.
