Cult musician Jon Gomm propelled to popularity by Youtube, Twitter and Stephen Fry

Cult musician Jon Gomm propelled to popularity by Youtube, Twitter and Stephen Fry

The world beckons for cult guitarist Jon Gomm after a chance posting of his youtube video "Passionflower" sent it zooming well past a million views. The posting on sharing website Reddit has brought global attention to the fiercely independent musician and won him thousands of new fans including celebrity serial-tweeter Stephen Fry who posted a link to the video on Twitter with the single word “Wow!”

After almost 10 years of touring Europe, playing over one thousand gigs, and releasing his own music, Jon’s life has changed.

Jon says: “My previous life - of driving from my home in Leeds to Vienna in my beat-up Astra to play a concert, playing up to 200 gigs a year in pubs around Britain, sleeping on sofas in Rome or floors in Reading and playing in a car park in Barnsley has suddenly changed dramatically.

“So far I've been invited onto national TV in Turkey, Portugal and Holland and, this year, will be touring in around 15 countries on three continents, and my CDs will be finding their way into stores from Germany to Japan.

“It's been crazy, but I felt lucky enough before, just being able to make my living as a musician, so anything more is a bonus.”

Jon, passionate about the guitar since he was a child (he wanted his first guitar at two but his parents, unable to find one small enough bought him a ukulele instead!) has long been regarded, by those in the know, as at being at the top of his game. Acoustic Magazine describes him as “one of the world’s most gifted guitarists”, and other top guitarists including fingerstyle legend Andy McKee, and heavy metal man Devin Townsend have posted links to Passionflower as a must-watch.

Jon, who turned down a place at Oxford University to pursue his passion for music, has always been uncompromisingly independent and his refusal to sign up to the commercialised music world and have his art watered down means he has previously only achieved cult status. But now all looks set to change for Jon, who spent his childhood practising his guitar in the bedroom of his Blackpool home and listening to music by all the world’s greatest guitarists.

His independence is matched by his generosity; in the autumn he launched his download-only Domestic Science Singles Series, on a pay-what-you want basis because he believes music should be available to everyone regardless of their means. He is also donating a percentage of the money paid for downloads to the Happy House, Kenya- a children’s home opened in 2010 by a small Blackpool-based charity,  Children of Watamu.

Jon is modest about the acclaim he is receiving. “I do feel a bit strange being in the limelight, which I’ve always avoided really. Knowing someone like Mr Fry has watched my song and enjoyed it makes me happy, simply because it's like I've paid him back a little bit for entertaining me for years!’’

* Passionflower was inspired by a plant growing in Jon’s small backyard in Leeds. “I put the seeds in a tiny tub, but it grew like a Roald Dahl story until it took over the whole yard then, one day, the sun shone extra hard and 100 flowers all went “Pop!”. It was amazing, so I wrote a song for it.”

The lineup, feature vocalist Ricky Warwick, bassist Marco Mendoza and guitarist Damon Johnson alongside Classic Thin Lizzy members Scott Gorham, Brian Downey and Darren Wharton have gone from strength to strength since announcing their return in May 201O.
Currently blowing away fans with 13 dates across the UK during January and further dates in February, Scott Gorham commented "The response has been amazing – there are some towns we haven’t played with this line up and demand for us to play there means we can add more shows – so here you are!!’

The band, who have not released a studio album since 1983's 'Thunder And Lightning', indicated earlier this year that they are considering recording new material together. Were this to happen, it would mark the first new music the band had released since the death of front man Phil Lynott in 1986. Thin Lizzy will play:

Wet Nuns announce 'Throttle' Tour 2012

Wet Nuns announce 'Throttle' Tour 2012

THIS FEBRUARY AND MARCH 2012!

“Snarling, sweaty, boisterously hurling expletives at you like great big lumps of molten rock… ridiculously appealing” Clash Music
“This totally rocks” NME Radar
“Make sure you see this band as soon as you can” Musical Mathematics

“What’s a girl like me to expect from a Wet Nuns gig? I saw pictures of Terence crowd surfing on two people...” Toast Magazine

It’s been a crazy start to 2012 for death-blues punk duo Wet Nuns. Named one of NME’s “Bands To Watch for 2012”, remixed by Arctic Monkeys’ Matt Helders, having the most watched video on NME.com on the day of its release, and performing with super-group Mister Heavenly for ATP, it seems like there’s no stopping WET NUNS right now.
And now those red-necks from the deep South (of Yorkshire) are hitting the road on a mammoth 21-date tour this February and March.

If you haven’t witnessed a Wet Nuns show yet, then you’ve missed something damn awe-inspiring. The two-piece from Sheffield have been blowing venues around the UK apart with their hell-bent explosion of songs about “women, death and beer”.

Stomach-churning guitars and downright ugly drumming combine to produce the trademark modern lo-fi, blues-stoner-punk sound of Wet Nuns. While their recent single, ‘Heavens Below’ is everything you’ve come to expect from this big-riffing, crowd-surfing, cursing, rock duo.
Tickets for the Throttle tour are available NOW from www.artistticket.com. Look out for the some exciting news on the release of the title track of the tour, ‘Throttle’, coming very soon!

Wet Nuns single ‘Heaven’s Below’ is also available as a free download, along with a remix by Arctic Monkeys’ Matt Helders from www.wetnuns.com now.

Those that know release The Weeknds Loft Refix

Those that know release The Weeknds Loft Refix

Creative trio Those That Know release their superb new refix of The Weeknd's Loft Music, the first of four refix releases from the hotly tipped collective this winter.

Comprised of producer J. Hoskins and rappers / singers Tuuobillion and Saint Kay, Those That Know first formed in 2011 and soon began producing what they describe as "an eclectic mix of electronic influenced hip-Hop and R&B". Having produced records for a varity of artists, the London / Essex based group found their first taste of success after producing Black Biscuit's 2011 single 'Child of the Street', which was regularly rotated on MTV Base and even received support in the US from esteemed tastemaking website WorldStarHipHop.com. This success was soon followed by 'Blow You Away', a track produced for Pierre Amil which recieved regular TV rotation from KISS and Channel AKA (who featured the record on their latest annual compilation album) and airplay from 1xtra as part of Ace and Vis' 'Fantastic Four' feature.

In mid-2011 Those That Know went on to expand their brand even further, with the launch of their own exclusive range of t-shirts, sweaters and hats. The current winter collection is available now at www.thosethatknow.bigcartel.com.

Fast forward to 2012, and Those That Know have elected to release a series of four fantastically unique refixes of some of their favourite new music, starting off with a refix of The Weeknd's online cult hit 'Loft Music'. The inspired refix effortlessly showcases the trio's talent, with the track's original melodies finding themselves subtly warped alongside a deep, stuttering sub bass. The track is accompanied by a fly on the wall video which acts almost as an animated 'day in the life' of Those That Know, creating a suitably voguish audio-visual package for fans of new music experiences.

Getintothis Music Award judges announced

Getintothis Music Award judges announced

NME, LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB, VICE MAGAZINE AND MORE
LINED UP FOR GIT AWARD JUDGING PANEL

The Getintothis Award, the premier prize for the Merseyside music scene, has assembled a jury of high quality, highly experienced judges to find the best new sounds in the city.

But then, that’s only befitting an award with an excellent prize and which has been dubbed by the UK music press as 'the Scouse Mercury'.

For the inaugural GIT Award, top names from Liverpool Football Club, NME, Vice Magazine and The Guardian have teamed up with the cornerstones of the region's music scene to judge the finest recordings to be released on Merseyside within the last calendar year.

The winning artist will come from across the musical spectrum reflecting the city’s rich heritage in pop, rock and roll, country, dance, soul, hip hop and jazz plus all stops in between.

Experienced journalists and senior editorial figures from the national and music press make-up the panel and all have plenty of experience of the perennially fruitful melting pot of styles that is Liverpool music.

First up on the panel (in alphabetical order) is Joshua Burke co-founder of Liverpool lifestyle magazine Waxxx, journalist, film-maker and Vice Magazine's global editor Andy Capper and John Doran, editor of the music webzine The Quietus - winner of Record of the Day's 2011 Digital Publication.

The second trio of judges is led by the award’s founder Peter Guy, a journalist with the Liverpool Post and Echo and editor of Getintothis music blog which gives the prize its name. He is joined by Liverpool music promoter, Steve Miller, the man behind club night EVOL, and Paul Rogers, head of content at Liverpool Football Club, a former music journalist who has interviewed a diverse selection of artists including Public Enemy and Kylie Minogue.

The final trio of judges is Craig G Pennington, editor and publisher of Bido Lito! -the Liverpool music magazine, Alexandra Topping, a Skelmersdale-born journalist for the Guardian, who writes about everything from gang violence to pop music, and Matt Wilkinson, new music editor on Britain’s most influential pop music platform, NME.

They will decide who is deserving of an incredible prize which includes recording time at Liverpool studio Sandhills Studio and a showcase at this year’s Sound City and Liverpool Music Week. The winners will also play a gig at Vice Magazine’s London bar The Old Blue Last, as well as having a promo shot by Virgin Media Shorts filmmaker of the Year nominee Ian Gamester to be screened at FACT, the city’s art house cinema and creative technologies centre.

The 12 nominees on the short list will be announced in the coming months and the winner announced at an awards ceremony in April.

Artists can still enter the GIT Award by sending four tracks to getintothis@gmail.com or alternatively post to Peter Guy, The GIT Award, Liverpool Post & ECHO, PO Box 48, Old Hall Street, Liverpool, L693EB.

If you're a business and would like to get involved with the GIT Award, please email

Rory Gallagher's first six solo albums reissued for 40th anniversary

Rory Gallagher's first six solo albums reissued for 40th anniversary

Sony Music in association with Capo Records and Legacy are proud to re-issue the first six original Rory Gallagher albums in chronological release date order – “Rory Gallagher” (1971), “Deuce” (1971), “Live! In Europe” (1972), “Blueprint” (1973), “Tattoo” (1973) and “Irish Tour ’74” (1974).  These six seminal re-issued albums celebrate 40 years since the birth of Rory’s solo career.

Rory Gallagher was a musician like no other. He was, and still is, one of the world’s greatest guitarists, singer/songwriters and live showmen. His guitar playing is an inspiration to some of today’s hottest guitarists including Slash, Joe Bonamassa, Brian May, Johnny Marr, and The Edge

“The man who changed my musical life was Rory Gallagher, I picked up a guitar because of him.” – Johnny Marr

Each of the six milestone albums were released during Rory's most prolific years (1971-74), when he recorded and produced them in the short space of three years.  The albums are re-released in digipack form, with newly restored original cover art. The audio has been re-mastered from the original ¼” inch tapes, true to how Rory intended it to sound.  Each album includes exclusive sleeve notes personally written by Rory’s brother and former tour manager “Donal Gallagher”, journalist “Roy Hollingworth”, and legendary rock photographer “Mick Rock”.

Introducing...Sam Sallon

Introducing...Sam Sallon

Sam is the real deal, a truly excellent singer songwriter and a great guitar player. He has toured with Rodrigo y Gabriela, Pete Doherty, Nouvelle Vague, Dot Allison and Lyle Lovett. Last year he played The Secret Garden Party, Cheltenham Folk, Big Chill, Wilderness and Beacon Festivals, amongst others. Sam is a class live act, and most of his bookings come through word of mouth alone.

His album One For The Road was produced by David Watson, who has worked with Eric Clapton and the late great Bert Jansch. The album features some renowned British musicians including guitarist Paul Wassif, Neil Cowley on piano and singer Kami Thompson.

Sam will be releasing an EP through AWAL Records and playing up and down the UK in Spring. With the build-up to his album release later this year, there are several give-aways in the pipeline, and some top notch videos emerging from February onwards. In the meantime, here's a link to the fantastic 360 Interactive video for "Keep Moving" (click and drag the movie around for stunning 360 effect).

Sam's Facebook is the most popular place for his music and videos: http://listn.to/SamSallon

Threshold Festival Liverpool 2012

Threshold Festival Liverpool February 2012

Friday 10 – Sunday 12 February 2012 (Previews Thursday 9 February)

Grass Roots Manoeuvres

Threshold Festival returns to the Liverpool Baltic Triangle in the New Year. Following the success of its maiden voyage in February 2011, the underdog aficionados behind Under the Influence are set on two things – Bigger and Better. Starting life as a collaboration between CUC Liverpool and Under the Influence, the CUC’s huge labyrinthine warehouse enabled the inaugural multi art-form, multi venueThreshold to become a sprawling indoor festival. Music, theatre, visual art and live art performances flowed from one room to the next.

So where to next for Europe’s Largest Festival Under One Roof? The sad and rather sudden closureof the CUC building could have easily meant nowhere… But the team wasn’t prepared to let this bean end to it. They just had to think outside the box, and find themselves a different box in time for February. The big news is that Threshold Festival 2012 will no longer be under one roof. It will beunder several roofs. With the incredible support of a community of creatives willing it to happen, practically the entire Liverpool Baltic Triangle has come to the rescue and got behind Threshold. Thefestival will be putting on a long weekend of events in Elevator Café, Camp and Furnace (formerly AFoundation), the New Picket and the Scandinavian Church, with more venues to be announced.

Right from the start, the first Threshold festival endeavoured to engage with arts, music and
performance promoters, providing them with a platform to create and explore. This time that same ethos applies more than ever, with over 20 promoters already on board from Liverpool such as Mellowtone, Rebel Soul, Newpath, Headspace, Antipop, Kin2Kin, CALM, and further afield including Glastonbury favourites Chai Wallah, Scottish blues label Guardian Angels Records,Salford-based innovators Un-convention, Manchester contemporary art  and creative writing champions Blank Media Collective and alt-folk wunderkinds Imploding Inevitable Festival.
Stealing Sheep have already herded into their line-up, and other confirmed performances includeThe Thespians and Man Get Out. A great programme of events that began life at CUC Liverpool will also be spilling out into the new venues, such as geek heaven Super Effective Sunday, RonanBoyle & Lucy Styles, Before Dark Acoustic Sessions and the ever popular Prime Cuts openscreen for short film makers. Under The Influence will take all of these events and more, and reach awhole new Threshold encompassing the Liverpool Baltic Triangle.

Here’s what they said about Threshold 2011:

Apart from the fact that it's a mighty fine and incredibly audacious and ambitious event that's worthy of our support and which we'd be plugging anyway, there's also a heap load of acoustic music taking place. We'd expect nothing less from the Under the Influence. - Liverpool Acoustic

Kudos all round to the excellent team behind last weekend’s riotous Threshold Festival. The city categorically set out its manifesto for our creative, inventive and collaborative future. And being at the CUC this weekend felt like you were in the eye of the storm.
In years to come, those who attended can look back, misty eyed, and say, yeah, I was there at the very first one. It was that kind of event; the buzz was tangible. It would be unfair to single out any specific bands, performance companies or other creatives. But let’s just say there were a few SevenStreets spied who we’re very keen to bring to your
attention over the coming weeks.
Watch this space.

And if you missed it all, like, where were you? - Seven Streets

Bringing together some of the North West’s hardest working and innovative artists and promoters.- Object of dreams

Last year’s festival highlights:

Notable & memorable Threshold 2011 features included, Field of Dreams the ambitious and beautiful installation by artist Robyn Woolston, Living With Macbeth written directed and performed by Storm Theatre, Reflections of Projections by award
winning company 2Toned Theatre, the Twinned exhibition by Headspace, music by Delta Maid, Punning Clan, MinionTv, The Elementals, Kof, Lovecraft, Fonetics, Dave O’Grady, Loose Moose String Band to name but a handful of amazing talent, plus film screenings by Serious Feather and Vincent Moon, and dance performances by MDI.

Even though there is talk of juicy headliners this year, the focus will again be stoically grass roots. Last year’s event prided itself on being the platform for those without one, and this is as important as ever. Thanks must also go to local and regional education institutions for their involvement and support.

A few words from the Threshold Festival Directors:

We were under no illusions about Threshold Festival 2011, it was new territory & it was a
monumental (with the emphasis on the latter two syllables of that word) undertaking. We did it and people loved it, from punters to artists, to volunteers to CUC staff, and now we’re back to do it all again in 2012. Get ready for some amazing antics. - Chris Carney, Festival Director

We've been astonished by the reaction and support for the festival after the news of CUC Liverpool closing. Now more than ever it feels like an event truly rooted in the multi-arts community.
- Kaya Herstad Carney, Festival Director
