Exitmusic announce new album and free download

'PASSAGE' RELEASED ON 21 MAY 2012 ON SECRETLY CANADIAN
DOWNLOAD ALBUM TRACK FOR FREE

Brooklyn, NY’s Exitmusic – comprised of Devon Church and Aleksa Palladino – will release their debut album, Passage, on Secretly Canadian on May 21st, 2012.  The album’s opening track, a haunting blast of sound called “Passage,” can be downloaded here:

Passage is a long time in the making, and certainly worth the wait.  Church and Palladino started writing together several years ago, when the Canadian-born Church moved to New York City, Palladino’s home, following a year teaching English in Taiwan and India.  Their collective sonic interests – layers, textures, churning, spacious guitars (Palladino had been playing hers since age 12), blinking electronics, shimmering vocals – created a fruitful writing partnership immediately.  Their songs began to take on new dimensions when the pair moved to Los Angeles a year later, finally committing their compositions to the recording process.
A few twists and turns (and a move back to New York City) later, Exitmusic found a home for their material with lauded independent Secretly Canadian, who released their first EP, From Silence, in Fall 2011,
a four-song collection that drew critical raves both in the UK and overseas. The Guardian praised its “tsunami of pop noise” and the NME pronounced it “a gloriously luscious listen,” whilst Time Out said ”Spectral Washes of woozieness that start off with vocal woos reminiscent of Beach House before morphing into a digi-beat and banshee-blasted wall of noise."

But whereas that effort was recorded entirely at Church and Palladino’s Brooklyn apartment, their new full-length, Passage, is a major step forward for the duo in terms of both recording technique and songwriting. With help from drummer Dru Prentiss and electronic musician Nicholas Shelestak, Church and Palladino spent several days this winter working with mixer Nicholas Vernhes (Dirty Projectors, Deerhunter) at his Rare Book Room studio, where they built on the duo’s beautiful, chilling aesthetic for a sound that is both more powerful and more nuanced. “I think there is something a bit more expansive in the new material,” says Church. “On ‘Passage,’ we cover a lot of emotional ground, and ‘White Noise’ and ‘Storms’ wound up having more pop elements in them than I think they would have had we recorded them a year ago.”

Come Together new project at Sands Ibiza

Safehouse Management closes the door on Come Together and opens the door to Sands Ibiza
(London, February 27 2011) After two phenomenal seasons, the Friday Come Together night at Space Ibiza is taking a breather. Safehouse Management founder Lynn Cosgrave says she is incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make the event a success, including the thousands of fans whose energy ignited Fridays at Space during the past two years. "We knew the Come Together concept of a mini-festival night under one roof would change the clubbing landscape,“ explains Cosgrave. “The fact that the parties went so well and we had so many people through the door proves that it was and is such a great concept. But now it’s time for Safehouse Management to take a step back and focus on some other priorities.“ Cosgrave says that many of the DJs who made Come Together so loved will be integrated into the Carl Cox The Revolution Recruits, Tuesday nights at Space. And the same crack team that worked tirelessly the last two years on.

Come Together are now working on a new Ibiza project: the restructuring of Sands Beach Bar just a stone’s throw away from Space.

Shake 'n' bake at Sands Beach Bar

"Nothing is as constant as change" might as well be sprayed on the door of the Safehouse Management offices in London and their takeover of the Sands Beach Bar in 2011 – together with Carl Cox and Jason Bull of Es Vive – is in keeping with their vanguard spirit. "In many ways, the changes we’re making at Sands are inspired by the same spirit that led us to come up with the Come Together concept,“ says Cosgrave. "For us it’s still about giving people access to some of the most forward thinking events, DJs and live acts of our time." However, this time it’s all happening on the beach with signature music mixes by a host of celebrities including Carl Cox and friends – shaking it up with flawless views of the sea from Sands sprawling beachfront garden of umbrellas and But Sands won’t just be showcasing the world’s best DJs on Ibiza’s stylin’ Playa D'en Bossa beach. They will also be unveiling a promising Ibiza culinary event with their brand new dinner service concept – 'Chefs on Tour'. The four British chefs chosen to launch the first season Andy Needham, head chef of London’s award winning Michelin Star restaurant, Simon Wadham, head chef at London’s Rivington Grill Shoreditch and Greenwich.

Paul Wadham (yup, they’re brothers), chef at Wing of St Mawes in Cornwall; Tim Payne, chef at the London Paradise Pub and former executive chef on ITV’s Hell’s Kitchen; and acclaimed chocolatier Damion Allsop, owner of Damian Allsop Chocolates. According to Cosgrave, Sands has been toned up with many new amenities including enormous sliding glass doors for windy days and nights. They have also been granted a later license so customers can enjoy their evenings to the fullest. Seats for the Chefs on Tour nights are limited so Cosgrave suggests booking early – although the exceptional food associated with Sands will continue to be served throughout the season by Japanese culinarymaster chef Yuji Miura and his team from Japan’s A-Life. M Fallan release debut album

M Fallan release debut album

Born in 1982 in the tumult and fury of Paris, M. Fallan aka Matthieu H. (Hateful Monday, Impure Wilhelmina) spent his childhood in a little hamlet at the foot of the mountains. This dichotomy shows up in his musical evolution, whether it be from acoustic to noise, academic (guitar and piano) to self-taught (bass, drums, guitar, and howling madly in punk rock bands).
In 2009 he decided to go on the road with only his guitar to his name, taking up a solitary indie/folk/pop/rock challenge. Shanon Wright, Eliott Smith, Pedro The Lion, Chokebore or Cat Power are some of the artists whose approach he admires. So Matt recorded a 4 title demo at the end of 2009 ("Ecbatane EP"), and released his debut solo album "Contagious" in 2011 on GPS Prod, Roads Sweet Road, Kicking Records & Urgence Disk!
By the way, you can have an ear on M.Fallan music with the son "Whitered skin" available on streaming here.

Professor Penguin announce new single 'Pirate' and details of their debut album

We would love to introduce you to the new single 'Pirate' from the London-based nine-piece (yes, nine!) Professor Penguin.

'Pirate' will be released on 19th March 2012 and follows Professor Penguin’s debut single ‘Pilot’, which won widespread support at radio from Nick Grimshaw on BBC Radio One, Lauren Laverne, Radcliffe & Maconie, Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson on BBC 6Music, Gary Crowley on BBC London, and John Kennedy’s XFM show where the track was playlisted as the “Xposure Big One”.

The band even picked up Brian Eno as a fan, who declared 'Pirate' a "Beautiful Piece" and played the track on a recent BBC 6Music appearance. Professor Penguin also performed an exciting series of sold out shows at London's Ronnie Scott's as part of their residency there in early 2012.

'Pirate' is the second single taken from Professor Penguin's debut album 'Planes', released on April 9th. It would be great to hear what you think to the track and if you would be up for reviewing the single or doing something more in-depth with the band.

Switchblade ft Top Boy Round Here release Here We Go

Switchblade ft Top Boy Round Here release Here We Go

Newcastle's first ever super group Top Boy Round Here team up with Nottingham emcee Switchblade to present their latest street single 'Here We Go'.

Comprised of Silvar Laidlow, Dap Ceo, Toni Mari and Jay Rockwell, Top Boy Round Here have spent the past 12 months touring, recording and building a nationwide fan base, becoming a major force in the UK urban music scene in the process.  Singer / emcee Silvar Laidlow initially made his name on the underground with the release of four critically acclaimed mixtapes, a transatlantic collaboration with US megastar The Game and performances alongside the likes of N-Dubz, Neyo, Chipmunk and Dizzee Rascal. His first taste of mainstream exposure came in 2010, when he touched the hearts of millions worldwide with his unforgettable performance of MAMA on Sky One's Must Be The Music. Dap CEO has cut his teeth as an emcee in a hugely fruitful career spanning almost 7 years, with collaborations alongside the likes of Lil Wayne, Professor Green & Shola Ama, and countless MTV Base / Channel AKA play list honours under his belt. The group's female member, Toni Mari, is undoubtedly one of the UK's most talented up and coming vocalists, having an impressive live touring portfolio including performances alongside the likes of Tinchy Stryder and Roll Deep. She even beat fellow North East native Cheryl Cole in a professional singing competition, leaving no doubt that she is a star in the making. Completing the Top Boy Round Here entourage is DJ Jay Rockwell, who has spun records all over the world, playing sets for superstars such as Usher, Justin Timberlake and Mariah Carey, as well as touring with the likes of Kanye West, The Fugees & Outkast.

The group's latest single, titled 'Here We Go', sees them collaborate with Switchblade (member of Nottingham based crew Landlordz and infamously known in the UK hip hop scene for his work alongside Giggs & SN1). Based around typically hefty production from Kimbo Hareez (D12, St Laz), the sure-to-be street anthem features composed, charismatic wordplay from the Top Boy collective and some seasoned hood lyricism from Switchblade. The single is accompanied by a cinematic visual courtesy of director Jamie Alderson, and marks the start of Top Boy Round Here's new online video series TBTV, which will see them drop a new video at 6pm every Tuesday for the foreseeable future.

Top Boy Round Here are also currently adding the finishing touches to their forthcoming rap tape 'The Blue Ribbon', which is hosted by legendary mixtape / radio DJ Whoo Kid and due for release in May 2012, making this a massively exciting year for the fast rising collective.

We’ve already got an incredibly jam-packed show of wondrous goodness in store at this year’s Camp Bestival, including the mighty Hot Chip headlining Friday night and some serious Saturday Night Fever action with a triple whammy of superfunk from the Earth Wind & Fire Experience featuring Al McKay, Chic featuring Nile Rodgers and Kool & the Gang, so get yourself ready for some brilliant news, as we unveil our ace Sunday night headliners! Plus there’s even more festi-holiday marvels to be had on the Jurassic coast at the end of July, including more live acts and DJs and the hugely popular East Lulworth Literary Institute which, as ever, is brimming with highbrow high jinks!

Rob da Bank says: “I'm amazed this band are coming to Camp Bestival. The Happy Mondays are one of those iconic British outfits that perfectly capture all that's best about our musical make up...indie, dance, rave, pop and Shaun Ryder’s lyrical wit. I grew up dancing like a rubbish Bez to the Mondays and fully intend to indulge in some creaky freaky dancing some the Sunday night of Camp B..Hope you'll join me.”

Featuring their original and definitive line-up, back together for the first time in 19 years, we are overcome with loose-limbed euphoria to be able to announce that legendary Madchester trailblazers Happy Mondays will be headlining Sunday night at Camp Bestival. So you can expect to hear classics like Step On, Kinky Afro, Hallelujah, 24 Hour Party People and more to keep you freaky dancin’ to the very last in the shadow of Lulworth Castle. All we can say is yippee-ippee-ey-ey-ay-yey-yey!

The Happy Mondays’ Sean Ryder said: "Me and the band are mega excited to be playing at Camp Bestival. We have heard the crowd are amazing, and we will definitely put on a great show."

Loved by the nation for their infectious smash Staying Out For The Summer and with a critically acclaimed new album endearing them to our hearts once more Dodgy will be providing the perfect summer sing-along.

There’s plenty more musical action coming your way too, with rocksteady rudeboy Little Roy whose Battle for Seattle album covering classic Nirvana tracks in his own inimitable style has seen him enjoying huge critical acclaim. Plus there will be live sets from bass explorer Redlight, Wretch 32 collaborator Josh Kumra, up and coming singer songwriter Ryan Keen and LA hipster-hippie Jenny O.

Ensuring that those delicious disco vibes last across the entire weekend we’ve got a host of amazing DJs to announce including the irresistible and all-conquering 2 Bears, whose recent Be Strong album has been getting almost everybody everywhere pretty hot and bothered. Anyone who saw his mammoth set at camp Bestival will be overjoyed to hear that the incomparable Mr Scruff will be manning the decks for another epic session of madcap mayhem. Plus there’s the extremely welcome return of reggae stalwart DJ Derek, cutting edge joy from Maya Jane Coles, blistering bassline salvos from Gemini, beat alchemy from Luv*Jam and underground action from Dave Hornby the man behind Bournemouth’s renowned Shake.

We’re also over the moon to be able to announce that the delightfully mischievous Dick and Dom will be making a much requested return visit to Lulworth Castle. Anyone who saw them wow the Castle stage crowds at last year’s show will be in no doubt that they’re in for an absolute treat of riotous fun and we can’t wait to see them again.

We’ve been swotting hard to bring you an A* programme for our East Lulworth Literary Institute. Nestled at the bottom of the Kids Field, this is an oasis of grown-up calm, where you can while away the hours indulging in a vast array of mind treats!

We’ve got our first selection of candidates for our exclusive ‘How To’ series, where much loved folk share inspirational musings on hot topics. We are honoured to be joined by the truly inspirational Camila Batmanghelidgh, who is the founder of the Kids Company charity and a veritable spokesperson for the care and wellbeing of young people. Camila will be interviewed on How to Change Lives. And what’s more, previously mentioned daft double act Dick and Dom will be taking the hot seat to share their wealth of silly experience in How to Dick and Dom About.

Scroobius Pip is shaking things up this year in his Satin Lizard Lounge spoken word line up. He’s confirmed guest hosting sets from two of London’s best spoken word nights in the form of Chris Redmond (Tongue Fu) and Joshua Idehen (Poejazzi)! Pip, Chris and Josh will be presenting the likes of John Berkavitch, Jodi Ann Bickley, John Osborne, Alex Gynther and John Sinclair who will be sharing the finest selection of their latest word craft.

"Born all in the dark wormy earth, cold specks of fire, evil, lights shining in the darkness" Ulysses, James Joyce

Cold Specks released their debut single ‘Holland’ through paradYse Records, the new Transgressive imprint, on 17 October 2011.
Recorded at Monnow Valley Studios and mixed at Sub Bubble, the single features tracks ‘Holland’ and ‘Old Stepstone’ and is available on 7” and as a download.

Cold Specks is 23-year-old Al Spx from Etobicoke, Canada, who now lives in London. Describing her sound as ‘Doom Soul’, Cold Specks’ music is steeped in the musical traditions of the Deep South. No wonder then that Al cites the Lomax Field Recordings and James Carr as influences along with Bill Callahan and Tom Waits. With a voice that evokes the ‘spirit feel’ of Mahalia Jackson and the visceral tones of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Cold Specks’ sparse arrangements and chaingang rhythms stop you dead in your tracks.

“My little brother, who was spending his summers with our mother in Toronto, had always told me of this girl he was friends with that had this amazing voice,” recalls Cold Specks’ manager, Jim Anderson. “As a producer I’d heard that so often that I didn't take too much notice. Then I came in one night to find him and a few friends drinking in the flat and playing a CD of her demos. I was completely transfixed and just kept pressing repeat. I knew I had to work with her. I eventually persuaded her to come over. At that point she had never played with another musician and was completely self-taught with her own unique tuning and timings, which we had to decipher.”

“Jim convinced me to fly out and work on the record for a few months,” explains Al Spx. “That was a year and a half ago. I guess I’m permanently based here now. I didn’t know anyone when I moved here. We needed musicians and Jim knew a bunch. Producer Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey, Anna Calvi) has been helping out with some arrangements and percussion and Jim’s old friends Pete Roberts (guitar), Thomas Greene (piano) and Tom Havelock (cello) also play on the record.”
