MusicMafia presents... Cat Torres

Cat Torres

Introducing Australian singer Cat Torres

Somewhere in the back of a nightclub, amidst the late-night haze and hoods, is where you’ll find the sound of 20-year-old singer-songwriter Cat Torres.
As much about tell-it-like-it-is (with two fingers) attitude as she is the soulfulness of girl-next-door urban, garage and dub beats and rhythms, Cat Torres is every bit a new-gen Australian performer, her talent already seeing her travel the world to work with both underground and renowned producers and songwriters, from London to L.A. and Miami.
The daughter of Colombian and Uruguayan immigrants and the middle child of three girls (“the problem child,” she says with a laugh, Torres spent her early years listening to the Latina and old American greats coming from the family stereo.
Hook-ups with beat-makers like The Presets’ Julian Hamilton and up-and-coming London-based producer Jaz Rogers (Daniel Merriweather, Lauryn Hill) who worked on debut single, ‘Kitchen On Fire,’ saw Torres adding club-room grit to her melodic swagger.
Kitchen On Fire takes the grime and dub sounds of East London’s backstreets and gives them a kick of irreverent lyrics and a last-train-home Spanish guitar interlude. UK tastemaker Zane Lowe got his hands on a demo of the track and gave it a spin on Radio 1, introducing Torres to London and garnering her an invite to play at the famed yOyO night at Notting Hill Arts Club, former residents of which include Mark Ronson and Lily Allen. The song was also bought to the attention of Phil Tan (Rihanna, Pharell Williams) in Atlanta who ended up mixing the track in his home studio.

Barry Southgate - E.P. Epitome review

Australian-based new artist and ex-Australian Idol finalist Barry Southgate, has his debut EP out – Epitome. The EP consists of 5 tracks. The first track Don't You Think is a very up-beat, sun-filled song reminiscent of Bruno Mars in its style and lyrical content. This showcases Barry's vocal range and differs a lot from any of the other tracks on the E.P.

Tracks like Against the Wall and You lend heavily on piano and on You, Barry's voice is heavily mixed but still has that soulful Stevie Wonder feel about it which made it stand out from what would just be a basic, playing by numbers, track.

The weakest track for me was Summer Night. This sounded too much like a 90s boy band song for my liking. Not much of a hook to remember it by either. It does showcase Barry's soulful vocal range though.

Over-all a great debut E.P and something that shows the potential that this young talent and hardworking singer has and definitely makes you look forward to the album which i'm sure wont be far from coming.

And finally the last track i listen to, The Fall, this to me was far to safe and more risk should have been taken. This could easily have been left off the E.P
