For 2012 we‘ve got what is undoubtedly the finest line-up in Bestival’s nine-year history, including sets from the legendary Stevie Wonder, New Order, The xx, Sigur Rós, Friendly Fires, Orbital, Frank Ocean, Hot Chip, Annie Mac Presents, Skream & Benga, Four Tet going back to back with Caribou and so much more. And that’s not to mention the magic and mayhem of the Wishing Tree, theSwamp Shack, Tomorrow’s World, the Wall of Death the Roller Disco and Ambient Forest or even our brand new Grand Palace of Entertainment and, of course, bounteous bohemian treats for you to enjoy. Now, we are truly delighted to be able to announce our fabulous Friday night headliner, plus another one of our long-time favourite bands who will both be joining us at Robin Hill this September…

Rob da Bank says: “The first time I met Flo she was whirling around like a spinning top to a Paul Simon track at a party I was DJing at. I hadn't even heard her open her mouth but she had this alluring vibe already. Once I heard her scratchy demo I was sold and when she did her first radio session for me at Radio 1 I couldn’t believe this flame-haired eccentric young lady had such a stunning voice. Her shows for us at Bestival and Camp Bestival over the last few years have always been highlights for many and I’m glad we can finally seal the deal with a headline show on the Friday of Bestival and with The xx on before her this promises to go down in the Best of Bestival yearbook!”

Making a triumphant return to Bestival, we are mega-pleased that Florence + The Machine will be headlining the main stage on Friday night. A longstanding Bestival buddy, Florence Welch and her trusty Machine have wowed Bestivalites across the years. From her mesmerising performance in the Club Dada tent to a handful of those in the know, to her all-conquering main stage set in 2009, her epic vocals, quirky melodies and self-contained musical world have created some utterly jaw-dropping moments that will live long in Bestival lore. Her second album ‘Ceremonials’, released at the end of last year, has cemented her reputation as one of the biggest stars on the planet and gained her accolades by the bucket-load, so we really are honoured to have her back with us again!

Florence Welch says: “This year we are headlining the one and only Bestival on the main stage on the Friday night after the amazing The xx, we hope we'll find you there in the wilderness with us! Lots of love, Florence + The Machine.”
To celebrate the fact that Florence + the Machine will be headlining on Friday night, they have put together a spectacular video message for us rejoicing in our Wildlife theme, which you can check out on our website, www.bestival.net!

Never ones to do things by halves, we’re also over the moon to announce that Swedish indie-pop doyens Miike Snow will be getting on the ferry across the Solent to join us at Bestival. Lauded for their eponymous debut album that brought them to worldwide attention, the band’s recent sophomore outing, ‘Happy To You’, has upped the infectious factor, as they effortlessly cross genres with their uniquely orchatronic sound. Their live show is a theatrical joy and one not to be missed and we can’t wait to see them!

The band told us: “We of Miike Snow are very happy to be playing Bestival this year, on the fantastical Isle Of Wight. We are looking forward to making sure everyone has a delightful time, and visiting Shanklin Chine. See you all very soon.”

Don’t forget about the recently announced Bestival Blocos either and our, frankly, off the hook carnival-esque Wildlife parade. More info on that can be found here.

We will be announcing our Friday night headliner on Monday 21st May, so keep your eyes peeled for the details and in the meantime make sure you keep on checking in at  www.bestival.net, and our Facebook page and Twitter for all the latest behaviour.

We’ve told you about our amazing headliners, Stevie Wonder and New Order, we’ve told you about exclusives from The xx and Sigur Rós and we’ve told you all about the off-piste madness from the Swamp Shack and Wishing Tree to the Ambient Forest and Roller Disco, our Wildlife theme and everything in between. But we still haven’t finished yet because now it’s time to tell you about even more beautiful music for you to luxuriate in at Robin Hill Country Park this September 6th-9th.

We’re thrilled to announce that Back to the Phuture will be returning for the third year running to open Bestival’s four-day escapist escapades. Very much a Thursday night institution, Back to the Phuture travels through time joining the musical dots of the past, present and phuture in their own immaculate style. As ever, the line-up is second to none featuring previously announced long time Bestival cohorts Hot Chip, the governor of all things synth Gary Numan, the super-hotly tipped Alabama Shakes, electronic music pioneer and inspiration to a generation John Foxx and the Maths and electro rockers Killaflaw. There will also be floor smashing DJ sets from The 2 Bears, acid legend Adamski and Back to the Phuture’s own Mark Jones.

Says Back to the Phuture mainman Mark Jones: “It's great to be back at Bestival for a third year with Back to the Phuture and a truly amazing line up of inspiring artists. Tomorrow is Today.........Today is Tomorrow..... Bring the Noize!”

Also adding their not inconsiderable talents to our jam-packed bill of live musical cheer are the stunningly soulful Jesse Ware, self-described ‘motivational speaker with harmonious intentions’ Willis Earl Beal, rap-punk-ravers Murkage, super-distinctive microphone champion Skepta, singer song-writer and soon-to-be superstar Jake Bugg, spine-tingling harmonisers Staves, duelling boy-girl vocalists Sunless 97, Brit-electro types The Other Tribe, Mancunians Parma Violets, Eastern European folk flavoured South Londoners Georgeous George, folk-punk four-piece Crowns, live freestyle breaks dons Subgiant and shoestring-popsters Daytona Lights. Plus there will be appearances from Charley Macaulay, Alonestar and the Isle of Wight’s very own A Way Of Life and This Way Up.

Everyone in the Bestival Bunker is well excited about Parisian genius Brodinski coming to Bestival. A man after our own hearts Brodinski’s taste is as wide as our smiles when we’re reaching for the lasers at one of his gigs, covering filthy techno, bass heavy house and minimal vibes. You know you have to be there when he raises the roof! Anyone who knows their onions when it comes to dance music will know that Gilles Peterson is an utter legend on a quest to find the perfect beat and we’re jolly pleased that he’s taking his search to the Isle of Wight to exhibit his impeccable taste for all you lucky Bestivalites. And that’s not all, as Redlight will be navigating the space between house, bass music and beyond, smashing it up with his jet-propelled bangers, jungle pioneer Shy FX will be there in full effect, plus there will be deck wrecking action from Dalston doyens Gutterslut, glitchy Dubstepper Zomboy, cut and scratch monster Krafty Kuts, edit-genius Duff Disco, bhangra chief Sonnyji Presents Bang Bhang, cosmic disco dude Flying White Dots, and local boy done good Kaf-Tan.

We’re also delighted to announce that Bestival will be teaming up with Exit Festival to take part in the Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) Twin Festivals initiative. Deriving from the popular ‘twin towns’ concept the scheme aims to create a cultural exchange between the UKs leading independent festivals and their international counterparts and both festivals have plenty of ideas up their sleeves to benefit both artists and festivalgoers from Serbia and the Isle of Wight this summer.

Says Rob da Bank: “I’m so pleased that we're twinning with Exit - my one visit there has stayed lodged in my festival brain as one of my favourite memories…playing records in an old fort to the most hedonistic party people this side of …well Bestival! So much energy, good vibes and great acts playing - hopefully something that we share with Exit at Bestival. Long may we be brothers and sisters in sound!”

Says EXIT General Manager Bojan Boskovic: “We are so excited to be twinning with Bestival this year as we have watched it bloom from a wonderful ethos into one of the largest and most musically exciting festivals around! Bestival has a great energy, an immense and interesting line up and who can compete with the unique ideas and artwork each year. Exchanging acts and ideas, we also hope some of our followers will make the journey to Bestival and we look forward to welcoming Bestival fans to our crazy fortress”

To benefit local artists each festival has put forward acts to swap and play at each others events. The Playground Syndicate will play at EXIT and The Good Guys will play at Bestival. Each act will also blog about their experience playing at the twinned festival.

Hailing for the Isle of Wight, The Playground Syndicate are made up of 2 DJ’s (Elmo & Beavz) and the visual brilliance of the A.V Circus. These boys are seriously talented individuals and when they come together they are a mega force, twisting your mind with warped visuals, DJing with huge creative energy and reinventing the tunes they play within the mix.

DJ duo The Good Guys aka Bojan Cizmic and Andrija Kovac play a mixture of electronic folk, guitars and samplers with no boundaries and are rising stars in the Serbian underground electronic music scene.  With over 30 productions under their belt covering a range of styles from folk trash to nu rave the pair have broken out of their native Eastern Europe and are now playing gigs all over the world.

Twinned festivals will be sharing not only artists and expertise but also audiences, as 10 lucky competition winners will be given the chance to experience the twin festival in action.  And one lucky winner from each festival will also get the chance to win a trip to the twin festival with travel and accommodation for them and a mate. Announcements will follow on both festival websites in the coming months with more information and how to enter.

Now in its third year the AIF scheme has gone from strength to strength with participating festivals successfully building local awareness of their twins through cross press and marketing promotions. As well as sharing links on their websites, twinned festivals also include twinning information on flyers, marketing materials and in their PR campaigns to local media and once their own event has sold out help to market their international twin through their media channels.  Talent discussions have helped to co-ordinate bookings of international artists and further reinforce the fundamental values that unite the festivals.

Taking place from Thursday 12th – Sunday 15th July, in the magical Petrovaradin Fortress overlooking the river Danube, EXIT continues to deliver the most adventurous and value for money festival experience, with a diverse and cutting edge line up, cheap food and drink onsite and the best campsite entertainment whilst bathing in the hot Balkan sunshine.  Tickets are onsale now from only £95 for a 4 day festival pass. For more info and tickets http://eng.exitfest.org/

Sadly we have just heard that Azealia Banks is cancelling all of her summer shows in the UK and that includes Bestival but we have just confirmed an AMAZING new act to announce which we will tell you all about early next week and we still have our Friday night headliner under wraps, news of which will be coming soon, so keep on checking in at www.bestival.net, and our Facebook page and Twitter for all the latest behaviour.

With amazing music acts galore, including Stevie Wonder, New Order, The xx, Sigur Rós, Friendly Fires, Bat for Lashes, Roots Manuva, Orbital, 2 Bears and David Rodigan to name but a very few playing at this year’s show, you could be forgiven for thinking that Bestival is just about the incredible music. But, of course, as anyone who has ever been to Bestival will know, it's not all about the music, there’s a whole other world of madcap mayhem and convention defying oddments waiting to be discovered around every corner…

Rob da Bank says: “We're all very proud of the musical line-up each year at Bestival with so many great vintage and festival-rocking acts combined with the who’s who of new blood… But this is the announcement I’m probably most excited about - the alternative land of Bestival. Stages, tents, hidden nooks and crannies, jam-packed with polka, cabaret, striptease, cream teas, gay bingo, birthday parties, spoken word, freaks, circus, a live band playing inside a jukebox, illuminated night time ping pong, an arts salon and drag queen foodie demos…obviously! This is what Bestival is all about, the creativity and madness of all who come, let loose on a multi-stage technicolour freak out. Jump in!”

You’ll be pleased to hear that our ramshackle Louisiana style Swamp Shack returns for a second year, after being voted one of the highlights of Bestival 2011! Once again there’s an incredible music line-up at night including some of the UK's hottest emerging acts like Jess Mills, Clean Bandit, The Correspondents and Kill It Kid. And there’s a rocking mix of blues, bluegrass, folk and country music in the daytime on the rickety old porch stage.

But that’s not all... this year the venue will be crawling with interactive theatrical performances from the Invisible Circus and Roundhouse Performance Collective bringing a host of Deliverance-style mutants, fading southern belles and other unwholesome night-crawlers to life around the Shack.

The Ambient Forest is also back with a treasure trove of enchantments to lose yourself in. From the captivating Nomad Cinema to the David Lynch Foundation’s Transcendental Meditation sessions, there’s plenty to salve the psyche and enrich the soul with soothing grooves supplied by myriad cosmic crusaders including The Orb’s Dr Alex Paterson, Pete Gooding, Chris Coco, Tom Middleton, Phil Mison, Mixmaster Morris, Pathaan, Tythe Versus Mojo Filter and Balearica’s Graeme Fisher

We’ve got even more to add to the already jam-packed line-up on our brand new Amphitheatre Stage, set deep in the heart of the Ambient Forest. Scroobius Pip’s Satin Lizard Lounge was so popular last year we had people climbing the trees to get a look in! This year, he’s secured a stellar line-up of the very best spoken word artists in the country, including B Dolan, Laura Dockrill, Chris Redmond, Tim Clare and Luke Wright

Continuing the poetry offerings, we’re welcoming Tongue Fu, which features spoken word artists performing alongside a live band in a unique and compelling union and Bestival Limings, who fuse a carnival and party-loving vibe into a spoken work format to Bestival for the first time this year.

Completing our already announced line-up of comedy theatre on the Amphitheatre Stage, Guilt and Shame present their brand new depraved show Night of Seduction and on a slightly less debauched note, Eye Brow Productions present Collision, four hilarious and thought-provoking new short plays about surviving physics, testing love, and time travel.

Plus Rob da Bank favourite Fake Bush will also be gracing the stage with her unmissable renditions of our favourite Kate Bush songs. And are you ready to play some extreme UV ping pong at Bestival this year...? Ping Tron is a fully immersive, totally captivating ping pong experience played in a custom-built, lightproof mini arena with just the glow of AV to illuminate the action!

We’ve cranked up the fun factor just a little bit more to present a brand new Bestival venue; the Grand Palace of Entertainment. On the outside, it’s a beautifully decorated traditional fairground façade but on the inside, it’s a rainbow coloured, pleasure-seekers’ twisted fun house...

During the day you can sing your heart out with alternative karaoke kings, Hot Breath Karaoke, or test your musical prowess with the ever popular, Sounds Familiar Music Quiz. If pop culture is more your thing, then don’t miss the raucous games of Let’s Get Quizzical and don’t forget to check out Vikki Stone, in her hilarious and brilliant one-woman musical comedy show, Big Neon Letters

We’ll also be throwing a retro style Daily Birthday Party each afternoon, where everyone who is celebrating their special day (plus guests!) can gather to regress to the good old days of musical bumps and pass the parcel.

In the evening, we’ll be presenting a very special selection of the UK’s best in alternative cabaret. First up, is award winning performance artist Scottee’s brand new 70s gameshow inspired Camp, featuring the likes of Bourgeois & Maurice. Favorites from last year, Boom Boom Club are bringing us a new, Coney Island inspired, showcase of deliriously twisted cabaret freaks, geeks and misplaced spirits from the lost age of the fairground.

Longstanding Bristol institution Hoochie Coochie Kabaret will be bringing their world of trashy and surreal entertainment to the Grand Palace, while drag queen legend Jonny Woo will be whipping us into a frenzy with his Gay Bingo and Lipsyncing mayhem.

And taking us deep into the night, our favourite tranny super group Sink The Pink will be donning their Lycra leotards and rainbow eye shadow to lead us into a hedonistic, multi-coloured, glitter strewn party where all your inhibitions should be left at the door. See you in wonderland!

If you have a taste for the macabre then you’ll be welcome at the Slumbarave, an irresistibly twisted, spooky hotel.  Check in, if you dare, in the early hours and consort with characters ranging from the gothic to the insane; become part of the murder and mystery during the weekend at the haunted Hotel Slumbarave. Keep your bed tidy and the pillow fights tight, get your straightjacket pyjamas on and make sure the bed bugs don’t bite. The ‘Chambermaid of Festivals Past’ may well tuck you up during your worst nightmares.

You can make your bed and 'Rest In Peace' in it in our funeral parlour or find bed-wear ‘to die for’ in the dressing down cupboard. Patrons can enjoy nocturnal party games galore; play Swingo Bingo, Pillow Fight Club, or dance the dream with our late nightie music policy where DJ’s supplying narcoleptic beats ‘lift spirits’ with rare disco, soul and house for those incurable insomniacs…

It's not all about the stages, though. Peppered between the big tops and tucked into secret corners are a host of delightful sideshows and micro venues to discover.

Spidora is a dark yet delightful immersive theatrical sideshow presented by Copperdollar and The Peoples Front Room is a 19th Century Salon of creativity, artistry and performance all combined in a strangely familiar yet surreal environment. And why not join the RSPLB for romantic chit chat over a jigsaw, pen a love letter, go on a blind date or learn a mating dance and celebrate love in all its glory? And if you’re still looking for something a little different, Camp Cooks are a trio of 1950s style drag queens, cooking up a storm with foodie demos, camp performances and delicious meals for sale in their retro Airstream.

Those who haven’t yet seen this have been missing out! The Dukes Box is a sideshow that crams an entire band into a tiny shiny…er…juke box. With 35 songs to choose from, you can hear your favourites played just for you – live, with lights and sound system! And new to Bestival this year is the Dukes Box’s caravan cousin, the Sol Cinema, a super-cute and dinky retro cinema for eight people, showing short films, music videos and random curios for your viewing pleasure. All powered by the sun! Amazing.

Brand new to Bestival this year and situated in the Ballroom Field is Mazy's Art Club helping you to get back to your creative roots.  It's miles ahead of your old after-school club but still requires you to stick out your tongue in concentration.  Drop in and get into printmaking or giant origami; making anything from pin badges and mosaics to feathered headbands.  Be sure to take an hour out of watching the artists and become one yourself.  Make and do man!

Staying on a creative tip, if you head down to the Wishing Tree in the afternoons, you can join in the Spread the Love project with super talented folk Craftinoon Tea. Create handmade messages and random acts of kindness then spread the messages to as many people as possible by joining them on secret field missions.

Bestival wouldn't be the same without our two much loved institutions the Knees Up Tent and Time for Tease. If you fancy an afternoon tea with a dollop of saucy burlesque, or taking part in a racy art class with Dr Sketchy, then the Time for Tease tent is the place to indulge. For an eclectic and reckless party, with everything from world street vibes to comedy to plenty of gin fuelled sing-alongs with Underbling and Vow, then join the revellers in the ever energetic Knees Up Tent.

A certified Bestival treasure, Club Dada will be a four-day marathon of mentalness featuring DJ Tofu’s welcome home, The Electro Swing Club, the Night of 1000 Beat Boxers and Breakin Brass. And fast becoming a September tradition we can’t live without, the Polka tent is a den of wild-eyed wonder and the only tent in the world dedicated to the remix of Gypsy and Hoetown styles, curated by Continental Drifts, Global Local and Penny Metal.

To keep you on your toes while you’re exploring the many wonders of Bestival we are also adding even more musical acts for your pleasure, including twitchy blissful beats from Jamie xx, beguiling bass from Julio Bashmore, and cut-up party anarchy from The Nextmen, plus there will be sets from B Traits, Leo Zero, Evian Christ, Reggae Roast, Frank Tope, Rev Milo Speedwagon, Pathann, DJ Cable, Foamo, George B, and Sink The Pink who will be taking things late into the night at the Grand Palace of Entertainment.

Live sets will come courtesy of Barcelona’s, Pitchfork approved, John Talabot, wistful elfin singer-songwriter Lucy Rose, Bristolian, by way of Chicago, bluesman Jamie N Commons, woozy Warp signing Kwes, and erstwhile Tuung man Sam Genders in his Diagrams guise. There will also be appearances from Clock Opera, Stealing Sheep, Mary Epworth, Wet Nuns, Dingus Khan, Anothers Blood, Tom Williams And The Boat, Valentine Gray, Cherishport, The Widowmaker and back by popular demand is living legend Mr Motivator who will be helping Bestivalites shake off those fuzzy heads ready for another day of adventure!

There’s still so much more to say including news of our Friday night headliner so keep on checking in at www.bestival.net, and our Facebook page and Twitter for all the latest behaviour.

Arcadia Official 2012 Events

Arcadia

ARCADIA SPECTACULAR 2012 ANTICS

Boomtown / Bestival / India / USA

The mechanical fire breathing beast of Arcadia, that has presided as a towering inferno over Glastonbury for over the past four years, has been given a year off for good behaviour and is all set to take the metallic, pyrotechnic extravaganza on tour!

With the granddaddy of festivals Glastonbury taking a well earned rest this year, there has been many murmurings as to where the ultimate showstopper The Arcadia Spectacular, will be pitching up in 2012. So to put all the rumours to bed here is the official full run down of their antics and excursions over the coming months. Including the brand new, exclusive, one-off show with the mega 50 tonne spider structure for BoomTown Fair and the collaboration of imported fire art, circus and mechanical sculptures at Bestival! On top of this they will be heading abroad for some foreign inspiration and reclamation jaunts!

Born from a love of scrap, fire and supreme craftsmanship, Arcadia are known for putting on the definitive, out-of-this-world immersive festival experience! With their monstrous moveable sculptures, awe inspiring pyrotechnics, laser shows, gravity defying aerial performances and one heck of a pounding sound-system, Arcadia have flourished in their Glastonbury home, as well as the wider festival circuit, over the past four years; building up an unrivalled reputation within the festival scene.

This year Arcadia are taking to the road, crash landing on the outskirts of BoomTown for their brand new, one and only full-scale performance of the year. Arcadia will take over a whole area with the monstrous Spider, fully equipped with all the lasers, light shows and gargantuan flames that have become expected at the Glastonbury shows, but with some BoomTown specific modifications added to ramp up the beast for this exclusive ‘rave meets circus with an aliens twist’ show!

As well as bafflingly brilliant sculptures, the Arcadia crew are also known for their mind bending, heavy duty bass bashing line-ups! BoomTown is set for ‘shake’ with the line-up Arcadia have in store for them, consisting of: Dirtyphonics / Krafty Kuts / Stanton Warriors / Shy FX / Plump DJ's / Peo de Pitte / Foamo & Rack N Ruin present Gorgon City Serum / Sub Slayers Takeover / Far Too Loud Live / Chris Liberator b2b D.A.V.E. The Drummer / Ratpack.

In addition to the Spider stage installation at BoomTown, Arcadia will be showcasing what is believed to be; The largest fire art in the world coming direct from Burning Man this will be the first ever time it has been seen in the UK; Lords of Lightning from New Zealand– Harnessing 4 million volts of raw electricity, witness a two man duel with ACTUAL lightening, this literally hair raising show has to be seen to be believed! The Armadillo - 6 wheeled animated sound system sculpture built out of a tank causing mayhem wherever it goes!

Arcadia’s other major appearance at a UK festival this year will be their regular end of season appearance at Bestival, with a massive outdoor Cabaret that plays host to some of the best jaw dropping circus acts, mechanical sculptures and fire art from around the globe! On top of the Cabaret, Arcadia will provide a new mini 360o stage, The UFO in place of The Afterburner and will be slamming out tunes between jaw dropping performances.

Aside from the fully fledged Arcadia appearances at BoomTown and Bestival, keep an eye out for some of the recognisable structures and vehicles at other events, such as the new The UFO at Rockness, and the famous flaming lampposts and lightning men at BrisFest.

Adding another string to their bow, Arcadia are all set to take to the seas to spread the word far and wide! In a few weeks time, ‘Arcadia Abroad’ will commence with a two week trip to India spent with local artists and engineers touring giant ship scrapyards with the aim to design an installation that can tour across India this winter, each with a unique twist added by locals using local materials.

Then at the end of the UK summer Arcadia will be heading out to the USA for a new event Catalpa in New York City and then a final pilgrimage to contribute to Burning Man in September.

With each festival, event and reclamation trip that Arcadia encounter, the team, inspiration and skills grow. In the way their sculptures are an ever-evolving mechanism, so too are the crew behind it; filtering down from the founders underlying mission to inspire, recycle, support and expand on the grass roots and underground raw talent within the arts and party scenes in the UK. Arcadia truly is an untamed beast, spawned from a twisted liaison between metal, fire, sculpture, electricity and music, where the creativity and skills know no bounds!

Where to catch Arcadia this Summer:

Stevie Wonder to headline Bestival Sunday night

STEVIE WONDER

HEADLINES SUNDAY NIGHT AT BESTIVAL
(UK FESTIVAL EXCLUSIVE)

Bestival, Robin Hill Country Park, Isle Of Wight – 6th to 9th September 2012

Ever since we found out that our Sunday night headliner was confirmed we’ve been madly desperate to shout it from the rooftops. The Bestival bunker is fit to burst with utter joy as a real, bona fide musical giant will be amongst us this September!

Rob da Bank says: “What can I say? What a day! I see part of my job at Bestival as giving you acts you may never have seen or will get the chance to see again… so, I’m hoping you feel as happy as I do as we announce the legendary Stevie Wonder as Sunday night headliner! A winner of 25 Grammy Awards,  the most ever for a solo artist, this man’s music has always been part of the da Bank home listening experience and also a favourite at our Sunday Best and Bestival parties and this is a very rare chance to see a legend in action. See you there!”
A man of unparalleled fame, Stevie Wonder is our musical definition of sunshine. From his first number 1 hit, ‘Fingertips, Part 2’ at the age of 13, to the present day, he is one of the most celebrated and prominent figures in popular music. With a run of 5 classic mid-70s albums that included ‘Talking Book’, ‘Innervisions’ and ‘Songs in the Key of Life’ and platinum selling albums in the 80s, producing a string of hit singles including ‘Superstition’, ‘Higher Ground’, ‘Living for the City’ ‘Masterblaster (Jammin’)’ and ‘Happy Birthday’ which became the rallying song of Stevie’s efforts that helped make Martin Luther King’s birthday a national holiday in the US, his influence is timeless. And, almost unbelievably, he is coming to the Isle of Wight to close Bestival 2012 in a UK festival exclusive with a live performance tour de force and we are about as excited as we’ve ever been! So, make sure you join us at Robin Hill Country Park this September to witness one of the greatest acts of all time.

With over 20 stages of live music from more than 300 bands soundtracking your escape from reality, Bestival is the fans’ favourite festival, with a wealth of hidden treasures peppered across the site. From the old world southern American charms of the Swamp Shack and the magical aura of the Wishing Tree, to the mayhem of the Wall of Death and the rush of the Roller Disco it’s a non-stop party paradise and the greatest show on earth! See you down the front!

Don’t forget, we still have our Friday night headliner to announce as well as lots more amazing escapist action so keep on checking in at the ever expanding www.bestival.net, and our Facebook page and Twitter for all the super-fresh, up to the minute business.

#wildlife

We’re having a wild old time down at Bestival HQ planning a long weekend of ferocious fun for this September at Robin Hill Country Park. We’ve already lined-up amazing treats, from our Saturday night headliners New Order and exclusive performances from The xx and Sigur Rós, to our brand new Amphitheatre performance space in the woods and Arcadia’s Mechanical Cabaret, not forgetting our Wildlife theme, a whole heap of gleaming new stuff and old favourite haunts galore, so it’s with great pleasure that we give you news of lots more lovely musical acts joining the bill and some ingenious ways to travel to our party paradise.

Rob da Bank says: “Hello my wild and wondrous friends… another raft of fine musical acts to tickle your ears come September. I’m delighted that Natasha Khan is bringing her Bat For Lashes guise back to Bestival, her shows are always otherworldly and plain incredible. Add in electronic soul wunderkind SBTRKT, UK hip-hop legend Roots Manuva (playing on his fortieth birthday no less!), the new king of folk Ben Howard, the incredible Alabama Shakes and American poet Sage Francis doing his only UK show of the year plus a very special Moodymann set playing in the Roller Disco complete with his roller disco crew flown in from the States and I’m ready to roll! Music aside, we are as usual ramping up the level of non-music related activity so if you want to take part in a nighttime ping-pong tournament in the woods, go tree climbing or join the Wildlife tug of war (first round will be Foxes vs Cockroaches) then check www.bestival.net  for loads more fun and games! See you in September”.

Making a very welcome return to Bestival is Bat For Lashes. A firm favourite round our way, the Mercury Prize and Brit nominated chanteuse is currently recording the follow up to her acclaimed second album Two Suns and we really can’t wait to see her again. Singer-songwriter Ben Howard will also be making an appearance with his rootsy folk stylings, which helped his debut album Every Kingdom to a top ten chart position, making him a certainty to captivate the crowds. Masked beat manipulator SBTRKT will be liberating your feet with his tribal post-dubstep melange, plus there will be dub, hip-hop and raga coated in the unique lyrical dexterity of Roots Manuva and the exalted Alabama Shakes, who have been getting everyone from the likes of David Byrne to Adele giddy with glee, will be demonstrating just why they’re so hotly tipped.

There will also be penetrating verse in a UK festival exclusive from much admired emcee Sage Francis, boundary beating pop and yet another UK festival exclusive from Grimes, Brooklyn flavoured electro-pop from Chairlift, dirty throbbing bass from Gesaffelstein, Danish punk action with Iceage, cinematic soul from BBC Sound of 2012 nominee Ren Harvieu, post-industrial, noisenik disco from Factory Floor, dreamy pop from Porcelain Raft, shimmering psychedelia from Toy and lo-fi loveliness from Kindness. And there are plenty more musical charms on offer from Dismantle, Dirty Beaches, General Levy, Top Cat feat. Sir Coxsone Outernational, Josh Kumra, Errors, Trailer Trash Tracys, Forest Swords, Stay+, Skinny Lister, Misty's Big Adventure, Ryan Keen, Nina Nesbitt, BIGkids, The Lovely Eggs, Alt-J, St Spirit, Charming, Shepherds and Seán McGowan.

That’s not all, as the turntable worrying skills of Detroit techno wizard Moodymann, Gallic electro-houser Kavinsky and dubstep jukester Girl Unit are all set to make appearances to hype up the dancefloor. And in the Ambient Forest there will be some suitably soothing sounds from the inimitable Mixmaster Morris, Chris Coco, Phil Mison and Pete Gooding.

As ever, Bestival’s magic reaches far and wide and that even includes the journey there and back, so we are extremely pleased to announce the inaugural Bike to Bestival raising money for Cancer Research UK. A Magical Mystery Tour with music and fun on the way. The lads behind the trip, Buskers on Bikes, have put together a little video message which explains it all   If you’re up for joining in the ride or being one of the musicians that play, or have any enquiries please contact biketobestival@bestival.net - and there’s lots more info on the Bestival website here.

From brand new at Bestival to one of our favourite traditions, the Swim to Bestival, which will see 12 intrepid swimmers braving up to four miles of cold choppy Solent, raising money for each individual’s charity of choice.  We’ll be cheering them on from the Bestival armada as they go and you can find out lots more info at Swim2Bestival.

If exerting yourself on the way to the Isle of Wight isn’t quite what you had in mind, then Taxi to Bestival please with Minicabit might just be the thing you’re after! We’ve signed up with minicabit who will come and collect you (from one of 40 UK cities) and take you directly to the ferry.  It may well surprise you and work out cheaper and quicker than a train, or bus if a group of you club together.  You can arrange a return journey too so you get taken to your doorstep. Amazing!

Or, why not consider car sharing to Bestival this year?  We would love more people to car share (save yourselves money and also save on fuel used) so we’ve got two great options for you to use this year.  With the average 100 mile car journey leading to over 20 kg of CO2 being produced, goCarShare and FestivalBudi, have the potential to reduce the festival’s carbon footprint considerably.

'By travelling in a full car, festival-goers carbon emissions become comparable to taking the train…… so it can make a real difference.’ (Source: DEFRA Report)

So if you’re driving, or need a lift, check the links, sign-up and share the journey!

Finally, if you’re already pining for a touch of the Bestival vibes then make sure your goggle-box is tuned into BBC1 this Saturday (March 10th) when Bestival and Camp Bestival favourites The Cuban Brothers will be feeling the Saturday night fever as they take part in BBC 1’s Let’s Dance For Sport Relief. Famed for their outlandish b-boy antics, the madcap trio will be joined by Olympic legend Fatima Whitbread for a disco-fuelled routine in the fourth and final heat of this year’s competition. Voting lines open in the last 15 minutes of the show, so please vote for them and help raise a bit of cash for Sport Relief while you’re at it. Check the BestiBlog for more info.

There’s plenty more information coming your way in the next few months, including two more headliners to announce, plus more magic and mayhem than you could ever imagine, so keep your eyes peeled on www.bestival.net, and our Facebook and Twitter for all the latest goings on.
