The Bluetones Announce Second date at o2 Shepherds Bush Empire

 Due to phenomenal demand indie legends The Bluetones have added another London date to their farewell tour. The second gig at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire on Tuesday 27th September will be the band’s final ever show. On announcing the extra date, frontman Mark Morriss said;

"We’re ecstatic that due to an overwhelming demand for tickets, we’ve had to add an extra London show. This will be the final UK performance by The Bluetones and promises to be the absolute shizz!"

Their debut album ‘Expecting to Fly’ released on 12th February 1996 knocked Oasis’ ‘(What’s The Story ) Morning Glory?’ off the Number 1 spot in the UK album charts and delivered 3 Top 20 singles, ‘Bluetonic’, ‘Slight Return’ and ‘Cut Some Rug’.

Hugely influential in the Britpop movement, the Farewell Tour will be a reminder of how important The Bluetones are within the UK indie music scene, and marks the end of an era for the band who have been going strong since they formed in the early ‘90s.

Tickets for the last ever show go on sale Friday 3rd June at 9am and available from ticketweb.co.uk

Matt Berry @ The Masque Theatre Liverpool

Fans of the IT Crowd, Dark Places and of the man himself gathered in the Masque Theatre to witness a one off unique event. Matt Berry had come to woo them with his silky vocal talents and his unique brand of musical entertainment, and he didn’t disappoint. Entering on stage like Elvis Presley after a 3 minute build u, holding onto a Jack Daniels bottle which was almost as big as him, Matt went straight into the first number. That all too familiar voice bellowing out over the musicians.

With such classics as snuff box and Witchcraft the crowd lapped up both the humorous lyrics and Matt’s laid back attitude. In between songs the banter between him and the crowd was almost as if it was scripted and as soon as “One Track Lover” was played the obvious Garth Merenghi fans applauded and sang along.

The musicians themselves were faultless. The guitar player in particular was something to behold. Looking like Rodney Trotter with a curly wig on, he played like a man possessed by the ghost of Jimi Hendrix. The music itself varied from “reggae” to out and out funk-a-delic that would make George Clinton and Prince happy men. The Musicians were tight and played to Matt’s outlandish behaviour.

The encore itself was truly a masterpiece of invention. Singing “Jesus Christ Superstar” Matt left no doubt to his pre-conceived notions of himself and to be honest they were well deserved.

My only complaint to the whole night was the lack lustre crowd that had turned up to see Matt Berry. I think even at times during the end Matt seemed to be getting tired of trying to get some sort of interaction with the majority of the crowd and quite rightly so. But apart from that, this was a tremendous gig. Full of enthusiasm, humour and barrel loads of laughs. This has to be seen to be believed and as Matt Berry himself says...”Liverpool...you’re clever.....I LIKE THAT”

I Blame Coco @ O2 Academy Liverpool

The last time we covered I Blame Coco it was on a lovely sunny day in aid of the Macmillan Cancer Trust and Coco Sumner sported nothing but an acoustic guitar (and clothes of course) .
Tonight though is a completely different affair as the O2 Academy plays host to what has to be one of the brightest rising stars it has seen for a while.

As the Coco crew burst onto the stage the screams are more than audible as the crowd have been waiting in anticipation to see the band. The band launches into their first track with energy and enthusiasm something which does not dissipate throughout the whole show.

Bouncing round the stage, the agile Coco plays to the crowd and to her band members alike and she is not afraid to interact with the audience, whether it be coming down to the front to sing and dance with the lively crowd or standing up high and urging the masses on down below and then realizing that its much easier getting up than it is getting down, the crowd are loving it and so by the looks of it is Coco.

The songs played themselves are varied. From the dark and fore-boding “The Constant” through to the electro pop style of “Quicker” and the reggae beats of “No Smile” there is no doubting that there is something here for everyone and Coco shows her musical versatility by playing a number of instruments on the night

All in all I Blame Coco know how to perform. Whether acoustically or electrically they manage to engage the crowd and leave them wanting more. The only surprise I have is in asking myself why they are not much bigger then they are. With the likes of other less talented bands making a mint, I Blame Coco should be up there with them if not eclipsing them. I’m sure that wont be long in the making though.

John Lennon 70th Birthday Monument

A celebration of John Lennon's 70th Birthday really couldn't be held anywhere but in his home city of Liverpool. So to celebrate the event a monument has been erected to symbolise peace and harmony, something Lennon beleived strongly in. And who better to open this monument than Cynthia and Julian Lennon. The event brought together 2000 people made up of dignatries, local councillers, celebs and the people of Liverpool themselves.Aided by the fabulous Liverpool deaf choir signing 3 of John Lennon's greatest songs this was defintiley an event well organsied and with John in mind.
One of the highlights of the John Lennon birthday tribute in Liverpool is coming from a young American. Nineteen-year-old Lauren Voiers from Cleveland has created the monument called "Peace and Harmony" that was unveiled in the city's Chavez Park, and she too was there to celebrate the moment. This is just the start of what is to be a 2 month celebration of the man himself. Various events are going to be held across the city from a bed-in by the Bluecoat to a Celebration of John Lennon's work and life in "Lennon Remembered" at the Echo Arena.
A fitting tribute to a legend of the city and a legend within the world of music.

Suzanne Vega - Up Close and Personal - Cardiff

SUZANNE VEGA

Close-up and personal in the Welsh capital with leading songstress.

Pioneering American singer/songwriter Suzanne Vega returns to the UK this Autumn with her gentle, yet powerfully political acoustic pop. With just a couple of UK dates announced, she stops off at Cardiff’s St David’s Hall on Monday 1st November. Suzanne’s career began with hit songs such as 'Marlene on the Wall', 'Luka', ‘Small Blue Thing’ and the hugely successful album 'Solitude Standing' which brought her unique style of music to a global audience. Her career received an extra boost in the early 90's when UK-based dance duo DNA released a remix of a cappella song 'Tom's Diner', which charted world-wide.

Suzanne was born in Santa Monica, California in 1959. She grew up in an Hispanic neighbourhood in New York City. As a teenager, Vega attended the High School of the Performing Arts, where she studied dance. Teaching herself to play the guitar, she began to write songs, fuelled by discovering the music of Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed. At the age of 19, she had abandoned her plans to become a dancer and performed her own songs in student cafes and the folk clubs of Greenwich Village.

In April 1985, her debut album, Suzanne Vega, was released, produced by Lenny Kaye and her co-manager, Steve Addabo. Its collection of self-penned literate and understated songs, showing only a passing resemblance to neo-folk, received universal critical acclaim, Suzanne came to be regarded as the vanguard of a new generation of female singer-songwriters. The album reached No. 11 on the U.K. album chart and provided her first major singles hit, "Marlene on the Wall."
The release of her follow-up, Solitude Standing, was buoyed by the huge success of the single, "Luka," which broke new ground in the pop charts, written, as it was, from the viewpoint of a child abuse victim. The song was to bring her numerous awards from organisations, fighting child abuse, for the recognition it brought to the issue. It also garnered a Grammy nomination, and an MTV award for best female video.

Suzanne Vega has continued to inspire a generation of female singer-songwriters such as KT Tunstall, Tracey Chapman and Alanis Morissette and now with the release of a recent album 'Beauty & Crime’ and her second CD in her “Close-Up Series”, Close-Up Vol. 2 ‘People & Places’, in stores on October 12th, she is ready to inspire thousands more around the globe on her new tour and recordings.

"Story-telling was made for Suzanne Vega - perfection"

LENNON REMEMBERED - The life and works - Echo Arena

Celebrating the Life and Works of John Lennon 9/10/40 – 9/12/80

Friends and artists unite to remember Liverpool’s most famous son.

Friends and artists who worked with the late, great John Lennon will come together for the first time in a historic memorial concert to commemorate 30 years since his untimely death. The one off concert entitled ‘LENNON REMEMBERED – The 9 Faces of John’ is being held at Liverpool’s Echo Arena on Thursday 9th December at 8pm. It will present artists and friends who span the whole life and career of the ex-Beatle from Liverpool to New York.

The CMP Entertainment and Cavern Club production will focus on the significance that Lennon believed the number 9 had on his life. It will see 9 periods of John’s life represented by those who were there, including John’s first band The Quarrymen, the Beatles fellow Hamburg musician and lead vocalist on ‘My Bonnie’ Tony Sheridan, art school friend and editor of Mersey Beat Bill Harry and Beatles Press Officer, close friend and ex CEO of Apple Tony Bramwell. Also appearing are Joey Molland, guitarist with Apple signed Badfinger who played on Lennon’s Imagine, Grammy award winning sound engineer Dennis Ferrante who worked on a plethora of Lennon’s albums during his New York years, as well as Liverpool born actor Mark McGann who is famed for his honest and powerful portrayal of John both on stage and film. He will present a special performance of his award winning stage show, John Lennon – In My Life.

Co-event organiser and Cavern Club owner Bill Heckle says “Anyone who loves the music of John Lennon and The Beatles should not miss this night. You will be witnessing history with contributions from those who helped John create it.”

With more very special guests to be announced, one artist who will be stepping up to the stage to perform and share anecdotes on the night is Plastic Ono Band member Alan White who played drums on Lennon’s classic hits including ‘Instant Karma’ and ‘Imagine’.

Alan White says “working with John was truly one of the highpoints of my career. The world lost not only an amazing musician but a great man when he died and I’m honoured to be involved in such a fitting tribute to a dear friend.”

And if that wasn’t enough – US Beatles artist Shannon and artist to Hollywood stars has been drafted in to produce an exclusive piece of art entitled ‘The Nine Faces of John’. The professionally crafted piece will be used in the show to depict the stages of John’s life from Liverpool to his final days in New York.

Profits from the entire night are going to local charities Alder Hey Imagine Appeal, Radio City’s Cash For Kids and the Mathew Street Festival.

John’s sister Julia Lennon says “John would be very proud that the concert was bringing together so many of his friends and colleagues. I am delighted that ‘Lennon Remembered’ is such an historic and relevant tribute to my brother’s life and career. It’s wonderful that the proceeds for such a celebration can also give a little back to the city that he loved.”

Director of “LENNON REMEMBERED” Jon Keats said “We are pleased to be announcing the first guests for Lennon Remembered. Talks are ongoing with many more of John’s friends and fellow musicians so watch this space as it promises to be a memorable evening.”

CONNECTED

Members: Conor 13 and Miles 13 (twins), Harry 13 and Max 15 (brothers) and Matt 12

From: Manchester

Background:

Connected are a boy band and the group have been together for the last 5 months, and all met at Max and Harry’s mum’s performance school. All the boys started singing from a very early age and say it’s their passion and desire to sing. Miles came up with the name connection after he thought it was the best way to describe the group’s dynamics.

Audition comments:

Simon – You’re all very cute and look good together but here is the bad news, this is 15 years out of date… maybe you did need a little bit of help, so I’m going to say……YES

Amanda – YES. I got goosebumps the minute you all started singing, and I think you have a big future ahead of you.

Piers – YES. I was the official biographer for Take That so I’m an expert in first stages of boyband and I think we’ve got something quiet good here

New Band Alert - Pearly Gate Music (No 778)

Hometown: Seattle, Washington.

The lineup: Zach Tillman (vocals, guitar), Josh Tillman (drums), Joe Syverson (bass), Colin Wolberg (guitar).

The background: The history of rock is full of examples of what happens when siblings form bands. The Kinks, Sparks, the Jesus and Mary Chain, and Oasis all feature creative alliances fuelled by brotherly tension. With Josh and Zach Tillman, we don't get to see sparks fly because they've each got their own outfit – the former is in Fleet Foxes while the latter has his Pearly Gate Music, which began as a lo-fi, laptop-and-scratchy-guitar bedroom exercise, although it's grown to include Zach's drummer brother as part of his recording and touring band.

That said, unlike Oasis, the Kinks, and the Mary Chain, Pearly Gate Music aren't about fury and flying sparks (as for Sparks themselves, they merit a category all their own). No, PGM make a hymnal, spectral sound that is often quiet, even sepulchral, so much so that this could function effectively as alternative church music – a lone, mysterious church that you might stumble upon in some backwoods somewhere – and in this respect it's definitely a case of, if you like Fleet Foxes, you'll love PGM.

There are differences. We can't put it any better than the reviewer who concluded that, though both Tillmans are Neil Young fans, Zach is more about the haunted, harrowing folk-blues of On the Beach than Josh and Co's sweeter After the Goldrush influences. Or to put it another way: he's more Hank Williams than Brian Wilson. This is indie-country, although there are echoes of other stuff here – on Golden Funeral, the startling opener of the self-titled debut album, you think of Alex Chilton's fractured, after-hours ballads from Sister Lovers, but then suddenly a track like Big Escape will veer closer towards power pop territory, even if it is done on the cheap, bringing to mind an unplugged version of Big Star's Radio City. But what really makes PGM and FF blood brothers are Zach Tillman's vocals – when Josh joins in on Oh! What a Time, they evoke the pure, clear tones of those other warring siblings, the Everlys.

When he was a kid, the Tillman family home caught fire and Zach got trapped in the attic where he was "putting the finishing touches on the handmade crafts I was gifting my parents and siblings that year". By the time the rescue crew got to him through the flames, he had been "technically dead for at least three minutes". Bizarrely, when he came to, he discovered that he could sight read any piano sheet music that was put in front of him, from Thelonious Monk to Mozart. He's since lost this strangely acquired skill, but you still get a sense with PGM – as you do with FF – of a musician in touch with mystifying sources.

Michael Jackson Cirque Du Soleil show

Michael Jackson’s songs will be used for a new Cirque de Soleil show.

The legacy of the late pop singer - who passed away from a massive overdose of anaesthetic Propofol in June last year – will be set to an acrobatic live show by the Canadian dramatic circus troupe, whom Michael was a keen admirer of.

The show will become a permanent production to be staged in Las Vegas, US, from 2012, after a deal brokered by the 'Thriller’ singer’s estate.

John Branca, co-executor of the estate said: "Having attended Cirque du Soleil performances with Michael, I know he was a huge fan.

"We are excited to be partners with Cirque du Soleil to give Michael's fans a truly unique way to hear, see and feel Michael's music."

The deal between Michael’s estate and the troupe will see each own 50 per cent of the profits from the production - which is expected to feature a number of modern circus acts, such as trapeze and fire breathing, interpreted to the backdrop of the 'King Of Pop’s’ music. It is also expected the performers will be dressed in tribute to the star.

Michael’s mother, Katherine, said: "Our family is thrilled that Cirque du Soleil will pay tribute to my son in such an important way."

Other productions in tribute to musicians developed by Cirque De Soliel include shows in tribute to Elvis Presley and The Beatles.
