UB40 Headline massive UK reggae lineup at Wowfest

Wowfest August 17th - 19th 2012

Wowfest - the UK's brightest and biggest new festival for 2012 - has pulled off a spectacular double coup as they announced further headliners for Saturday & Sunday night with the world's biggest selling reggae band UB40 playing one of their only UK festival appearances this year on Saturday Aug 18th. With a string of top ten hits to their name, UB40 head up a quite outstanding reggae line-up of living legends that already includes the likes of Finley Quaye, The Wailers, Aswad, Maxi Priest and Misty in Roots alongside another dozen acts in what promises to be the finest collection of reggae artistes anywhere in the UK this year.

And there was further excitement from the Wow camp with news of the exclusive UK appearance of Madeleine Peyroux, from USA, on Sunday on the Blue Angel Stage, for what is to be a great treat for fans of her jazz/folk bohemian style, once discovered busking in the streets of Paris with her soul shaking songs and haunting voice likened to Billie Holliday. This follows the Saturday headline appearance of The Overtones - 5 Irish/English boys updating the swing and fun of be-bop and dee-wop and bringing some good old style back into the modern UK jazz scene.

The Blue Angel Stage features some exquisite Jazz acts including the recognisably Jamaican inspired lilts of jazz party trombonist Dennis Rollins in the Velocity Trio and Dominican Cameron Pierre, Dixie chicks Larkin Poe, plus The London Community Gospel Choir, with some more outstanding live appearances still to be announced, ensuring the most impressive selection of Jazz acts in the UK for 2012
And the global party that is Wowfest continues to gathers pace in the afterhours Club Nights with the addition of Roni Size alongside Smith and Mighty for superlative jungle/dubstep/drum and bass night on Friday, whilst Peter Hook, until recently of New Order fame, joins Marshall Jefferson on the ones and twos in a closing Madchester Hacienda themed after hours party on Sunday.

And with the addition of the Alabama 3, Heaven 17, 808 State, Kitten and the Hip, The Pretty Things, and The Blockheads to the Main and Global Stages, with plenty more support acts as well as headliners still to be announced, Wowfest is already shaping up to be an iconic event, with an eclectic mix of House, Reggae, Ska, Jazz, Global and Dance that is already seeing a few envious eyes cast by established festival organisers - with the emphasis firmly on quality rather than excessive quantity of fillers that can sometimes blight other festival line-ups

Tickets are on sale from the event website for a bargain early bird weekend £99 (including free travel on Southern Vectis buses) for limited period only, and many have already snapped up since the announcement of  Paul Oakenfold, Soul 11 Soul, The Beat, Norman Jay, Danny Rampling, The Selecter, Bad Manners, Neville Staple of the Specials, Bez from the Happy Mondays' acid house night, Manos De Dios, Black Roots, Talisman and host of other top names all appearing at Wowfest over the weekend - and with a lot more to come yet.
Wowfest also sees a very promising stage for newer acts evolving - The Shaved Fish stage highlights global and local up and coming bands ensuring that plenty of young unsigned and Isle of Wight talent gets to share the event with some of the classiest live performers alive today. Local and unsigned acts are invited to contact Wowfest HQ to apply for an opportunity to play - see the event website www.wowfest.co.uk for more info about opportunities to perform and get involved with Wowfest - including catering and trading concessions, volunteer stewards and other opportunities to join the festival.

And with a strong green ethos, an emphasis on veggie, locally sourced and organic food, and a tantalizing looking selection of workshops and activities for kids and families in the African Village, plus some fabulous comedy, cabaret, theatre, performance, circus and walkabout, there's plenty more going on than just the superb musical line-up to ensure a truly memorable weekend at what promises to be one of the friendliest and enjoyable weekends this summer
WOWfest is also proud to partner the following charities: Oxfam, Solar Aid, Building Schools for Africa, Sustrans, Vegfam and the IW NHS Juba project.

WOW festival 2012

 Bravestation

Plenty of WOW Factor as Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling, Maxi Priest and The Wailers play WOWfest

House legends Paul Oakenfold and Danny Rampling, and reggae stars Junior Marvin of Bob Marley's Wailers and Maxi Priest are amongst the first headliners for this summer's brightest new festival in August on the Isle of Wight - WOWfest, a 3 day music extravaganza on August 17th - 19th  featuring some of the world's top acts in what promises to be one of the most outstanding global parties of the year.

Top name DJ's and a strong reggae line-up dominate the bill so far, with many more names still to be announced, and if you like to party, then WOWfest will be exceeding all expectations with some of the world's biggest names gathered for the weekend. Friday night sees an impressive start with the Mondays' maracas man Bez's Acid House Night twisting a few melons on the Global Stage with his Madchester madness, whilst dubstep originators Smith and Mighty & special guests rock the  One World tent. On Saturday DJ uber-legend Paul Oakenfold takes to the decks to head up an impressive looking Club Yeyo Italia 90 club night on the Global Stage with Danny Rampling & a live set from 808State, and on Sunday, Norman Jay opens the Main Stage alongside Soul 11 Soul before US house maestro Marshall Jefferson headlines a Hacienda - themed closing party to bring the global celebration that is WOWfest to a grand finale, before the expected 20,000 party goers head off into the sunset with a head full of beats, a soul full of love, and a feelgood factor that only the best events provide.

WOWfest boasts a mightily impressive reggae line-up too, with live sets from original acts including Junior Marvin of Bob Marley's Wailers, with UK reggae legends Maxi Priest and Aswad joining Misty in Roots, Black Roots, Macka B and Talisman in what is already the best reggae bill of the year in the UK - with a very special headline act on Saturday still to be announced. And on Sunday there's a particularly strong collection of original ska bands on show including The Beat, The Selecter, Neville Staple of the Specials fame, and Bad Manners ensuring a lively all - day and evening session before the nights come alive at the 6 different Club Nights being hosted across the site over the weekend.

There's also some quality World and Jazz acts on over the weekend, including the likes of Manos De Dios, Terrakota and Baka Beyond on the One World Stage, whilst the Blue Angel Stage plays host to some top performances with Joe Cang, The Dennis Rollins Velocity Trio, Gregg Kofi Brown and Sarah Jane Morris gracing the arena, before the big top transforms into an afterhours swirling burlesque and comedy club. And with the Shaved Fish stage hosting a number of younger up and coming acts, plus the African Village, featuring performance from the Kakatsitsi Master Drummers and others, as well as hosting workshops and ceremonies with activities for all ages, alongside some spectacular theatre, performance and walkabout, there truly is something for everyone going on at WOWfest.

But of course, it's not just about the headliners and entertainment - in this day and age a successful festival must have a high level of eco-awareness to ensure that the footprint of the festival is sustainable. WOWfest provides for eco-conscious festival tourism, encouraging festival - goers to travel the island by bus or bike, not car. The Sunshine Trail cycle route goes right through to the festival, and Island buses are free with WOWfest tickets, so you can take a bus to the site if you don’t fancy the cycling. WOWfest and its sponsoring partners are encouraging festival - related tourism on the Island without cars, as well as using alternative energy sources, preserving water and minimizing waste in a sustainability plan commissioned at the outset. And there's a great choice of food and shopping at WOWfest too, with the emphasis on fair trade, organic and vegetarian as well as locally sourced produce (including workshops from celebrity TV chef Richard Fox with his Love Food Hate Waste cookery roadshow), ensuring WOWfest meets the highest eco standards right from day one – even managing to include an appearance from the UK's greenest band The Phoenix Rose!

WOWfest is a festival whose time has truly come, and thousands are expected to snap up the best priced £99 early bird tickets, which are on sale from the event website www.wowfest.co.uk, before the other headliners and support acts are announced. For details of all the acts playing at WOWfest this year please visit the website www.wowfest.co.uk

WOWfest is also proud to partner the following charities: Oxfam, Solar Aid, Building Schools for Africa, Sustrans, Vegfam and the IW NHS Juba project.

Stevie Wonder to headline Bestival Sunday night

Bestival

Stevie Wonder to headline Bestival Sunday night

STEVIE WONDER

HEADLINES SUNDAY NIGHT AT BESTIVAL
(UK FESTIVAL EXCLUSIVE)

Bestival, Robin Hill Country Park, Isle Of Wight – 6th to 9th September 2012

Ever since we found out that our Sunday night headliner was confirmed we’ve been madly desperate to shout it from the rooftops. The Bestival bunker is fit to burst with utter joy as a real, bona fide musical giant will be amongst us this September!

Rob da Bank says: “What can I say? What a day! I see part of my job at Bestival as giving you acts you may never have seen or will get the chance to see again… so, I’m hoping you feel as happy as I do as we announce the legendary Stevie Wonder as Sunday night headliner! A winner of 25 Grammy Awards,  the most ever for a solo artist, this man’s music has always been part of the da Bank home listening experience and also a favourite at our Sunday Best and Bestival parties and this is a very rare chance to see a legend in action. See you there!”
A man of unparalleled fame, Stevie Wonder is our musical definition of sunshine. From his first number 1 hit, ‘Fingertips, Part 2’ at the age of 13, to the present day, he is one of the most celebrated and prominent figures in popular music. With a run of 5 classic mid-70s albums that included ‘Talking Book’, ‘Innervisions’ and ‘Songs in the Key of Life’ and platinum selling albums in the 80s, producing a string of hit singles including ‘Superstition’, ‘Higher Ground’, ‘Living for the City’ ‘Masterblaster (Jammin’)’ and ‘Happy Birthday’ which became the rallying song of Stevie’s efforts that helped make Martin Luther King’s birthday a national holiday in the US, his influence is timeless. And, almost unbelievably, he is coming to the Isle of Wight to close Bestival 2012 in a UK festival exclusive with a live performance tour de force and we are about as excited as we’ve ever been! So, make sure you join us at Robin Hill Country Park this September to witness one of the greatest acts of all time.

With over 20 stages of live music from more than 300 bands soundtracking your escape from reality, Bestival is the fans’ favourite festival, with a wealth of hidden treasures peppered across the site. From the old world southern American charms of the Swamp Shack and the magical aura of the Wishing Tree, to the mayhem of the Wall of Death and the rush of the Roller Disco it’s a non-stop party paradise and the greatest show on earth! See you down the front!

Don’t forget, we still have our Friday night headliner to announce as well as lots more amazing escapist action so keep on checking in at the ever expanding www.bestival.net, and our Facebook page and Twitter for all the super-fresh, up to the minute business.

Beth Hart confirms Isle of Wight festival appearance

Beth Hart confirms Isle of Wight festival appearance

Los Angeles based singer Beth Hart has been confirmed to play the Isle of Wight festival on Sunday 24th June, alongside Bruce Springsteen and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

Beth’s new single, “Sister”, which features Slash, is currently A-listed on BBC Radio 2, she headlines the London Shepherd’s Bush Empire on Saturday 25th February.  Read the official press release here - http://bit.ly/qvLYnl.

Shepherds Bush will be Beth’s biggest UK headline concert to date.  It follows a whirlwind few months which saw the release of top-20 selling album “Don’t Explain”, a collection of soul classics with guitarist Joe Bonamassa, plus a rapturously received performance at London’s Camden Dingwalls last November.  A limited edition of “Don’t Explain”, featuring 4 previously unheard acoustic tracks, will be released on Monday 20th February by Provogue Records.

The Times said of Beth’s Dingwalls concert “with memorable lyrics, including the priceless line “she drank so hard the bottle ached” this was certainly a gig to be savoured to the last drop”.

Bestival's Saturday night headliner revealed as New Order

Bestival's Saturday night headliner revealed as New Order

Bestival, Robin Hill Country Park, Isle Of Wight – 6th to 9th September 2012
www.bestival.net
@bestival
facebook.com/bestivalfestival

The excitement never stops at Bestival HQ! Following our first line-up announcement, which included the amazing Sigur Rós, The xx, Two Door Cinema Club, Justice, Hot Chip, 2manydjs, Annie Mac Presents and loads more, plus the acts that have been announced on Twitter in the last week, we’re beside ourselves with joy to be able to let you know just who our fantastic Saturday night headliner is and we’ve got even more tasty treats to boot!

Rob da Bank says: “So I've got Blue Monday blaring out of the Bestival HQ office speakers as we unveil our iconic Saturday night headliner New Order. It doesn't get better than that… but it does! True Faith, Bizarre Love Triangle, Fine Time, Regret - so many amazing records i grew up listening to and still listen to now and they still sound immense, pioneering, legendary. See you down the front!”

One of the UKs most enduring bands, we are truly delighted that our Saturday night headliner will be New Order! Since the band’s reformation in August last year, with Gillian Gilbert back among their ranks, interest in the band has been at fever pitch so it’s an absolute coup that they’re coming to Robin Hill to play a headline set at Bestival! With an armoury of anthems stretching back three decades, New Order live is an essential experience and one that we can’t wait to share with you all!
Not only have we got such a glorious headliner for you but we also have live appearances from Friendly Fires who will be unleashing their trademark live spectacular in their own inimitably vibrant and widescreen way, psychedelic electro-rockers Death in Vegas, super-hot eclectic art-pop quartet Django Django, the brooding and brilliant Daughter, rave horn aficionado Drums of Death and the anthemic indie-dance of Zulu Winter.

We’re extremely excited to be welcoming superfly LA beats stable Brainfeeder who will be presenting leftfield loops from Thundercat, The Gaslamp Killer, Teebs, Lapalux, Jeremiah Jae and DJ Kutmah. Plus we’ve got plenty more DJs to keep your feet moving long into the night, including a sweet shop smash and grab with Doctor P, breakdown madness from Pearson Sound, Israeli Dubstepper Borgore and one-man orchestra Flux Pavilion. Plus there will be stark techno from Max Cooper, bass chaos from Gemini, slow burning jams from Krystal Klear, organic electro from Pangaea, soulful sinewave action from Pariah, upfront rave action from Billy Daniel Bunter, woofer-worrying mayhem from Trolley Snatcha, drum magic from Blawan, Zen riddims from KOAN Sound and the twin bliss of Warm & Electric Minds.

We’ve delved even deeper into the Ambient Forest this year and are very excited to be presenting a brand new performance stage: the Amphitheatre. Nestled under a canopy of trees, this beautiful spot will be home to a host of eclectic treats, from live film scores, to comedy sketch shows, to theatre and poetry.

In the daytime we’ll be showcasing a vast array of the very best spoken word maestros in Scroobius Pip’s Lizard Lounge sessions. We’ve also got some seriously funny sketch groups unleashing their hilarity for our chortling pleasure. In Max and Ivan are Holmes and Watson, history’s greatest detective tackles Chicago’s mobster underworld in this thrilling escapade! Next up are The Unexpected, the creators of the hugely popular YouTube sensation ‘Gap Yah’. And then there’s Four Screws Loose: officially the tallest (not to mention the sexiest) sketch comedy group on the circuit!

In the theatrical offerings, we have the delightful Owdyado Theatre, presenting ‘About A Bench’, a funny, surreal and playful show of ten stories taking place on a park bench. Then newcomers Soundbites will be bringing some of the most hotly tipped theatre makers and musicians face to face to create new short plays that feature live music on stage. Kinda like a live music video. But better. And for mind expanding musings, don’t miss our series of talks from the mighty RSA, who will be presenting ideas and thoughts from some of the leading enlightened thinkers of our time.

As night falls, we’ll be turning to the silver screen. In a first for Bestival, we’ll be teaming up leading DJs and musicians with a handpicked selection of your favourite films, to offer some brilliantly unique live score cinematic collaborations. Rob da Bank will be leading the way with an unmissable rescoring of the 1930s King Kong!

And that’s not all that’s going on in the Ambient Forest. Back by popular demand, you can start your day in a secluded clearing in the woods, with a very special meditation or yoga session, presented by leading experts, the David Lynch Foundation. And if you are wandering around after dark, look out for the extraordinarily talented interactive theatre company Gideon Reeling, who’ll be popping up along the trails when you least expect it! Already firm favourites at Camp Bestival, prepare to be enchanted, surprised, enlightened and bewildered by your assortment of encounters with this fabulous gang.

If you like the sound of the Ambient forest then you might just like The Wild Copse, since we’ve announced it, tickets have been selling like the proverbial hot cakes, so if you fancy a bit of a luxury Bestival experience, you’re going to have to get in there quick. More info about the Wild Copse can be found here: http://2012.bestival.net/info/camping/the-wild-copse

Remember there are still two more headliners to announce, and lots more fun and frolics to let you know about, so keep your eyes on our beautiful new site www.bestival.net, which is still just in its first phase plus our Facebook and Rob da Bank’s Twitter for all the latest action.

MGMT make their UK live return

MGMT have returned to play their first UK gig in six months and play material from their forthcoming second album Congratulations, out on 12 April.

Taking to the stage at London's Heaven venue on Thursday night (18 March) the Brooklyn pairing - Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, along with their live players - dedicated their hour-long set to Big Star's Alex Chilton who died this week.

Speaking to the crowd, VanWyngarden said: "He was someone whose songs we liked a lot."

It was the band's first UK concert since playing last September's Bestival on the Isle Of Wight.

Opener, and new song, Brian Eno set the trend and pace as far as new material is concerned.

As they've insisted in many interviews recently most songs see them explore a more delicate, less electric-sounding direction on tracks following up their 2008 debut Oracular Spectacular.

Andrew VanWyngarden strapped on an acoustic guitar for the majority of the songs.

The warmest reception from the 800-capacity sold out crowd was reserved for penultimate number, Time To Pretend.

Of course, so far fans have only heard Flash Delirium - the track the band gave away as a free download earlier this month and a song which gains an airing this evening.

From here the twosome play gigs in Ireland, Europe and Australia before returning to the US but are expected to return to the UK this summer for more live gigs.

MGMT's Andrew VanWyngarden says they're keen to be known for their new stuff.

"We wanted to evolve and change and at first people only wanted to hear kids. We were like, why are we standing up here now? But that has now all changed and we're playing new songs for people."
