GIT awards 2012 - The review

GIT awards 2012

GIT awards 2012 in Liverpool

Last night saw the first GIT awards. The Get Into This Award, named after a music blog run by writer Peter Guy, was set up to celebrate the new and emerging talent in Liverpool and has been dubbed the "Scouse Mercury" after the Mercury Music Prize.

As proponents of new talent, MusicMafia were proud to attend this event, and what an event it was.Bringing together the best of the new talent and the cream of publicists, music bloggers, promoters and general music folk  under one roof for what turned out to be a great celebration of Liverpool's emerging artists.

The setting for this was the Leaf Cafe. The room made up of glitter balls, screens and comfy sofas for those weary feet. The whole ambiance was perfect for the awards.

With  the night being hosted by journalist and Stone Roses biographer, John Robb, each act played live to the enthusiastic crowd. Each receiving a memento of their occasion and finally leading up to the winner which was given to The Loved Ones, who also received a day's free recording time at the Sandhills Studio and will be added to the bill at next year's Liverpool Sound City and Liverpool Music Week.

Former The Coral guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones, who was nominated for the award, gave an exclusive preview of his latest film score also.

The event as a whole was well choreographed and went more or less without a hitch. It was good to see so many great people coming together and supporting what has been one of the best events we have been to in a long time.

It's about time recognised and celebrated the wealth of talent Liverpool has to offer and I feel Peter has done this with remarkable aplomb. He has managed to bridge the gap between struggling artists and established music luminaries to bring them closer together in what is their main goal...to make an impact on the music scene here in Liverpool and further afield.

Brian Cannon and John Robb in Conversation
8th December 2011, 4-5.30pm, Leaf, Bold Street

The word iconic was invented for people like Brian Cannon. A graphic designer, art director, photographer, former manager of The Beta Band and music video director; Brian is the creative force behind some of the most famous British album covers in modern times.

His design company Microdot is currently celebrating its 21st anniversary; a span of time that has seen him design for Ash, Suede, The Inspiral Carpets, Super Furry Animals and many more.

However, it is his work with Oasis and The Verve that has perhaps most cemented his name in British design. A Storm In Heaven, A Northern Soul, Urban Hymns, (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? and of course Definitely Maybe are images that have adorned walls, album collections and ingrained themselves in a million minds.

Brian will be interviewed by the one and only John Robb; journalist, author, artist, all round legend, and now head honcho of the rather brilliant music blog Louder Than War.

For designers, visual artists, music buffs, photographers, video makers and everything in between!

This event is free but registration is essential as places will be limited.

Goldblade autumn tour dates

Fresh from their triumphant American tour with Crass, Goldblade continue to play UK festivals before a headline tour in the autumn.

A busy summer sees the band play festivals across Europe and selected UK dates. The band, recently voted 'most handsome band from the UK' by Suicide Girls website and whose anthem, 'Psycho' is to be used by a top American wrestler as his intro music and is being considered by Tarantino for his next movie, will be releasing a new album in the new year.

In the autumn the band will be returning to America, touring Brazil, returning to play Algeria and playing Russia as well as recording their new album and touring the UK.

The tour will also feature members of the band doing special tour guides for ten members of the audience who apply in advance round historical sites in the towns that they are playing in.

Frontman John Robb's best selling oral history of punk book, 'Punk Rock, An Oral History' is being released in the USA in Spring 2012 and Goldblade will be touring in support of the book in a multiple media event across the USA. Robb has also been asked to release a collection of his band interviews in Brazil where he is a cult figure.
