Thomas J Speight

Thomas J Speight to play the Shipping Forecast in Liverpool

2011 saw the digital release of the ‘Willow Tree’ EP through the independent label Young and Lost Club (home of Noah and the Whale and Johnny Flynn) and support slots for Joshua Radin, Doves, Mumford & Sons, Fionn Regan and the Freelance Whales – all of which has helped make Thomas and his melodic vocal stylings a must see.  The EP received widespread acclaim for it’s insightful lyrics and intricate arrangements, including Ryan Adams, who acknowledged the sound as “so beautiful”.This, in addition to support from Sir Paul McCartney, suggest that Thomas J Speight is one to watch.
2012 will see Thomas further develop his musical style, releasing a four track ep lyrics and intricate arrangements are complimented by lush, beautiful harmonies from The Staves and Allie Moss. Also featuring Brad Pemberton (of Ryan Adams and The Cardinals), the tracks offer a different side to Thomas, while still managing to retain what made his previous release 'Willow Tree' so distinctive.

Terra Naomi Review @ The Shipping Forecast

Terra Naomi Review @ The Shipping Forecast Liverpool

A laid back intimate night was in order on Wednesday at the Shipping Forecast as Terra Naomi finally returned to Liverpool for the final night in the UK as part of her European tour.

From the opening number, "If I Could Stay", you can tell she is in an incredibly talented singer/songwriter, with a fabulous vocal range, that managed to incorporate powerful vocals with beautiful angelic tones that left the Shipping Forecast audience mesmerized by her.

We were treated to songs from old and new albums, including "You For Me" which is an upbeat, catchy little number with quirky lyrics, "In The Summertime" a happy feeling number even though it's surprisingly about a funeral as we were told be her and, "Nothing To Hide" which hasn't even been recorded yet, but as soon as it is, I definitely suggest you listen to it asap.

We were also treated to a couple of covers, "Bridge Over Troubled Waters", Hallelujah", which is one of my favorite songs of all time and this rendition was definitely right up there with the original and most surprisingly, "Billy Jean" which I have to say, if Michael Jackson had sung it like that, I may have actually been a fan.

Throughout the hour long set, Terra, kept the crowd enthralled with her beautiful voice and engaging stage presence, with little anecdotes about her life and how the songs came about, and the time flew past far too quickly.

I've been to quite a few accoustic gigs in the Shipping Forecast but I have to say that this one has to have been the best I've ever seen or heard there. Judging by the audience's response I think I can safely say they did too.

Terra has hinted that there will be a return to the Shipping Forecast in September 2012 and I strongly suggest, if this is finalised you get down there as this is one lady, you will want to see perform.

Rams' Pocket Radio play Liverpool

Rams’ Pocket Radio to play Shipping Forecast in Liverpool

“Dieter Rams has got the pocket radios” added to Radio One playlist Jan 4.
Live; Snow Patrol supports and headline dates announced
“about to scare the ******* out of every other piano based band on the planet – Tom Robinson, BBC 6Music
“An artist of verve and versatility: keep this frequency clear” AU Magazine
Rams’ Pocket Radio has announced “Dieter Rams has got the pocket radios” is added to Radio on playlist Jan 4,and Snow Patrol supports and headline dates announced .Following support slots for the likes of Darwin Deez, tUnE-yArDs and Marina and the DiamondsRams will play with Snow Patrol at London, Belfast and Dublin dates. The band head out on their first headline tour on Feb 6..
This follows Radio one play from the EP “Dogs Run in Packs” and a support with Snow Patrol at their prestigious Q Awards show. It picked up comparisons with the likes of Frightened Rabbit, received early support from 6Music and Radio 1, and was supported by an acclaimed set at Glastonbury’s BBC Introducing Stage.
The ‘Rams’ in question is centred around Peter McCauley - a drummer, pianist and diverse songwriter from Lisburn. His musical career got off to a less-than-usual start, namely in the National Youth Orchestra of Northern Ireland. McCauley was one of the leading percussionists in the ensemble, boldly tackling the likes of Wagner’s Ring Cycle and Gustav Mahler (though he remembers spending a good deal of this time “sitting at the back, bluffing”). Then followed a move to Belfast in pursuit of an Architecture degree, where experimentations with a post-hardcore band slowly evolved into the songs now performed under the Rams’ Pocket Radio pseudonym.
Who, though, is ‘Rams’, and what is the significance of his pocket radio? Peter’s stage-name is taken from the 1950’s product designer Dieter Rams: viewed by many as the key inspiration behind the iPod, and various Apple products. “I was reading an article about historical icons in Wallpaper magazine,” says McCauley, “and they had set out a reconstruction of Rams’ desk. On it was a pocket radio, and I was amazed at how ahead of his time he was, if you look at the iPod today. He had a real manifesto for working, and that’s the main thing I’ve taken from him when making music: purity, simplicity and longevity were his main concerns, and they’re mine as well. You want to build something that could last forever.”

All the Young Live at The Shipping Forecast Liverpool

The music scene is seemed to be drifting apart from the old school rock and roll and the guitar bands. However, the Dooley brothers, Ryan and Jack, together with Will Heaney and David Cartwright are reviving the scene. Youth indie band ‘All the Young’ brings to the stage the vintage feeling of a heavy rock and roll.

They seem to be just a small town band singing about the outside world with rather typical ‘English’ vocals from the frontman Ryan. However, the band’s catchy tunes, as well as they soulful performances took over the listeners in no time. ‘All The Young’ have already achieved favourable recognition, but they are headed for more. The quartet is releasing their second single ‘Welcome Home’ on the 4th of July, 2011. Furthermore, the band is set to release new album later on this year in collaboration with legendary Garth Richardson (Biffy Clyro, Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chilli Peppers). In July, aside from their own tour, the band will be supporting Morrisey as well as playing the Wakestock Festival.

The Matchstick Men @ The Shipping Forecast

The  Liverpool band “The Matchstick Men” are a 5 piece band made up of Lewis Wright, Paul Robbins, Iain Forsyth, Barrie May and Peter Donnelly and have achieved a strong presence on the Liverpool music scene since 2005
Their latest outing saw them play the Shipping Forecast supporting Wrench and MusicMafiaUK went along to see them do what they do best.
I suppose I went along expecting another indie band playing morose songs with gloomy looking band members shuffling their feet and moaning. But The Matchstick Men are a world away from that.
Their music is definitely cemented in the genre of rock. Heavy, fast and all encompassing.
Lewis Wright sings with emotion and energy. His vocals reminded me very much of a young Eddie Vedder back in the days when Pearl Jam were good. The intensity is there as is the stage presence. The mutual respect amongst the band is also evident. These guys like playing together and it shows.
I felt the Shipping Forecast though, left them a little confined. This is evidently a band that needs a bigger stage in order to show their full potential and even though they were a guitarist down (apparently getting a hook fitted for a hand) the sound was immense. They are a tight band also and their music flows seamlessly from rock to ballad and back again.
This is a band worth seeing. For me, a breath of fresh air from the usual drab melancholy. A band that makes you feel good makes you feel uplifted and most of all makes you feel full of energy and enthusiasm.
The band have their album launch at the Krazy House in Liverpool in July and that will definitely be a venue where The Matchstick Men will come into their own and I for one, cant wait to see it.
