Liverpool Sound City 2013 dates announced AND early bird tickes on sale tomorrow

LSC 2013 will take place from 2nd – 4th May 2013

Early Bird tickets on sale tomorrow

The final chord has rung out, the feedback has stopped howling and the last exhausted, happy punters have left the venues, bars and wide open spaces of Liverpool Sound City 2012 with their ears ringing and their minds blown.

Highlights of LSC 2012 included Nelson George and Arthur Baker discussing how creative communities grow and evolve, Andrew Mains and Eamonn Forde on the power of mobile technology and Gered Mankowitz and Craig Pennington on the past, present and future of music photography at convention.

Other stand-outs at The Hilton included packed panels on new tech, music discovery and the new record labels as well as the highly successful launch of the LSC Roundtable sessions - where our delegates from 23 countries discussed, debated and networked to their hearts content.

Elsewhere, Sound City Expo got off to a flying start with 42 exhibitors showcasing the best in new tech and music services, while our inaugural Match Day, tailored by Umbro, brought Kicking + Screening football film festival, the John Peel World Cup (well done to 80s Casuals for winning it) and even a table football tournament together as one main event.
And by night The Temper Trap, Django Django, Alt-J, Ghostpoet, White Denim, Death In Vegas, Pond, Michael Kiwanuka, James Vincent McMorrow, Alkaline Trio, Kids in Glass Houses and more all played across the city to a legion of rabid music fans and industry.

But if you missed these stand-out performances - or you were there and you’re just plain thirsty for more - don’t fret. On Friday May 25th at 10am a limited number of Early Bird wristbands for 2013 go on sale at £20. If you picked up one of these Early Birds last year, you must be feeling pretty pleased with yourself right now and if you didn’t, now’s your chance to invest in some future smugness as we announce over the coming months the acts, bands, performers and artists that will make up next year’s LSC.

Sound City Liverpool 2012 review - Saturday

Sound City Liverpool 2012 review - Saturday

Well the final day of Sound City 2012 is here already and after three jam packed days of some of the best bands out there at the moment, it has been yet another triumphant success for its organizers. With so many genres of music available this year, there has been something for everyone. Highlights have included Space, The Wedding Present, Catfish and the Bottlemen and not forgetting Michael Kiwanuka, who should be seen live by anyone that has a love for music that tells a story and is sung from the very soul. Now onto the final days highlights.

EJ @ Kazimier

Joined on stage by guitarist,  James from London, young urban singer EJ has supported Jessie J on tour recently. Performing an array of covers, including "Domino", by Jessie J, in which she developed a fit of giggles half way through, "Teenage Dream" by Katy Perry and "Free Falling" by Tom Petty. These songs allowed us to see that EJ has a great range of vocals and is definitely a talent to watch out for. Her bubbly personality shone through into her vocals and made you instantly like this young new talent.

Dinner Ladies @ Liverpool Art Academy

When we walked in to Liverpool Art Academy, it was to see what all the bustle was about in their and once inside, we could see why. The Dinner Ladies had taken to the stage and were giving a lively foot stomping performance. With a mix of saxophone, drums, clarinet, guitar and tabard wearing bass player Marigoldy, this was a band that captures the Scouse humour of the working class at its very core. With lead singer Pete Bentham singing about how Scouser's sit round all day smoking weed, cats and dogs and lorry drivers, you couldn’t help put end up with a massive smile on your face, especially as the entire band looked like they were having an absolute ball on stage. With backing singers/dancers "The Dinnerettes" joining them on stage to help out with dance actions and holding up the sign for the sing along song,  "Hip Potater" "a piss take on a couch potato who watches shit tv". Comedic rock n roll at its best!!

The Wedding Present @ The Zanzibar

With only lead singer, David Gedge left from the original line up that has been going since 1985, The wedding Present have constantly moved with the times and reinvented themselves and picked up a Guiness World Record along the way and tonight they were playing to a very packed out Zanzibar
The set started off quite promisingly, with songs like, "My Favourite Dress" and "Meet Cute" echoing around the room, but as the set went on it seemed to me that they looked and sounded like they were just going through the motions and didn't really appear to have any get up and go in them at all. Whether the set picked up later on I can't say as we were onto pastures new but I hope for the audience that it did.

Space @ Liverpool Arts Academy

After many years of separation, Space original line up, minus drummer, Andy Parle, whose untimely death has been replaced by Al Jones, who we met a few months ago and is a mighty replacement for the much loved Andy. The place was packed out 30 minutes before Space took to the stage, with mainly old skool dudes and dudettes with the obligatory jackets tied round their waists all with the eager anticipation of reliving their youth. Having been a pretty big Space fan myself at the age of 18 to say I was looking forward to it was an understatement. Finally Space came onto stage to massive applause and cheers from crowd.
With lead singer, Tommy now sporting his Rockabilly look that has become synonymous with his solo venture, Tommy Scott and the Red Scare.
They showcased old and new tracks throughout the performance,  including"Attack of the Mutant 50ft Kebab" which is also the title of the new album and of course firm favourites, "Avenging Angels and a very bizarre duet with Cerys Matthew's head on the big screen behind for "Tom Jones" Think Holly from Red Dwarf and you've got the picture.
With the new material showing a more mature sound from Space, they are more headier rock vibe with an smidge of ska rolled in, you can definitely see that Tommy's lyrics and vocals have matured with him and we could see another Space take over very soon.  Only downside for their set had to be Jamie Murphy's sheer arrogance and attitude that seemed to grow each minute they were on stage. Breaking his guitar because it went out of tune and demanding a new drink because he spilt a bit of it is not a good look while you are in the middle of a comeback. Thankfully Tommy made light of the situations and the crowd didn’t let it ruin their enjoyment of an otherwise amazing set from them. So all in all a massive "YAY" to see the guys back doing what they do best.

Sound City Liverpool 2012 review - Friday

 Sound City Liverpool 2012 review

Sound City Liverpool 2012 review - Friday

Liverpool Sound City Day 2

Here's some snippets of the bands/singers we saw out and about yesterday and we loved every single minute of it.

Wet Nuns @ Red Bull Studio Live

We came across this punk rock/blues rock North East duo by chance as we could hear them from up the road and just had to go and investigate the totally amazing sound emanating from the Red Bull Studio Live was from. When we got their I was surprised to see it was just from 2 people on stage, Rob on guitar and Alexis on drums. From outside you'd be forgiven for thinking they were at least 4 people on the stage. The place was buzzing with energy from the crowd, who were loving every minute of it and the band themselves, who were obviously enjoying every second of it going by the on stage antics and banter. They had also attracted a lot of the North West music industry big guns and I can see why. They didn't want to leave the stage and the crowd didn't want them too. Also a first for me was seeing the drummer, Alexis, take lead vocals for some of the songs but with his sheer raw rock vocals bordering on thrash, which complimented Alexis vocals whose have a more rounded mellow edge to them without loosing that rock grittiness. Guitarist Rob, was totally caught up with the music covering whole stage in what seemed like one giant bounce. This is a massively talented duo and crowd loved them, including us.

White Arrows @ Kazimier

This young band heralding from L.A have with plenty of talent. They bring  a fresh sounding approach to music which floats and bounces melodically along throughout set with a gentle rock twists and a mellow twist to the set. Lead singer, Mickey Church's vocals ranged from gently melodic countryesque to gravely from each song, thanks to a cover of Bruce Springsteen's ,"I'm on Fire". Definitely a must see for all you modern indie rock lovers.

Get Back Colquitt @ Binary Cell

With a lead singer, Shaun Dunbabin, looking like a very young Suggs, this young Liverpool band not only have a mature sound beyond their years but lyrics to boot. Shaun has a brilliant voice which captures the emotion of the lyrics. Pity Sound City didn't see fit to actually put this venue on the map as its in a obscure place on Seel Street and people have missed a fantastic opportunity to see a very talented young  Indie Rock band who bring a style of their own to the genre. Very polished performance who will hopefully be playing bigger venues very soon.

Michael Kiwanuka @ Epstein Theatre

I almost kicked myself for missing him at last years Sound City and I was certainly not going to let that happen this year and I can say with all honesty that this has to be the best 90 minutes I've spent listening to live music in a very long time.
dont quite now how to begin trying to describe this gig apart from using the words sheer brilliance that hits every possible musical tingly part of you. We were taken on a soul train that passed through mellowville and funktown on the way. Joining us along the way were some hauntingly beautiful vocals by Michael Kiwanuka. This set hit every note you could possibly wish for in a gig, and then some.
He was joined on stage for half of the set with various musicians including Miles James on guitar, Steve Pringle on keyboards and Graeme Godfrey on percussion as well as a bass player and drummer.

With songs like ,"Rest", "Home Again" , "I'm Getting Ready", a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Waterfall" and my favourite of the night, "Rest" a solo song that was gentle, emotive, beautiful and rendered the lively audience into sheer silence, as everyone just basked in the pleasure of listening to such a talent. Michael sang the remainder of the set how he had originally played them, and took us back in tie to when he in his bedroom with just his guitar and a pen and paper writing them, and it worked so well, keeping it simple and very real, especially with "Any Day Will Do Fine".
His band joined him back on  stage for a final funked out number which saw the crowd standing up and joining in clapping and dancing along especially one very natty dressed dude who definitely had his funk on big style especially for tonight.
As i said earlier, I'd missed him last time round and am so glad that I didn't this time. So far for Sound City, Michael Kiwanuka has stolen this festivals crown for the most uber performance.

BearinHeaven @ Leaf

This Brooklyn based "rock" band have to be quite possibly the strangest yet oddly captivating performance so far. With enigmatic lead singer Jon Philpot, clad in a Rambo style vest  and providing some mad 80s dancing with a bit of Tim Booth stylee thrown in for good measure they definitely provided great stage presence. With an electro pop style heavily influenced by the bands of 80s yesteryear they are definitely something a little bit different from what we've seen so far. All in all a highly entertaining set.

Pond @ Kazimier

An odd little get up from Australia, with Paisley Adams, a mini Sid Vicious look a like as lead singer this rock band were an eccentric little group who provided a pretty damn good end to our Day 2 of reviewing. At times you thought they were going to go right into Rage Against The Machine mode, then into a funked up little beat number all while Paisley swung around the stage on another planet.  After jumping into the crowd half way through set, Paisley just managed to get back on stage and managed to switch of all the lights. Next track saw him playing the flute, not sure I've seen that happen in a rock ensemble before but from the short time they were on stage I realised, it was probably best to expect the unexpected from this curious little lot. But I've got to say, I kinda loved them all the more for it

Liverpool Sound City celebrates its 5th Birthday in May and the line up continues to grow for what is set to be the best event yet.  Having announced acts such as Professor Green, White Denim, Death In Vegas and the BBC Sound Best Of 2012 winner Michael Kiwanuka previously the next wave of artists brings the most exciting contemporary artists to Liverpool with a few classic names thrown in for good measure.

Australian guitar band The Temper Trap have recently expanded to a five piece, ensuring a much bigger and more rounded sound for their second album ‘The Temper Trap’, which is released in May.  The release of their first album propelled them to international acclaim and their much anticipated return will see celebrated frontman Dougy Mandagi back in the north west for a must see show.

Kids In Glass House’s infectious, hook laden rock has ensured a wildly devoted and rapturous young following and their huge riffs and choruses has led to widespread mainstream success.  This hot and sweaty show will be a Sound City highlight.  Of a more gentle leaning is Irish singer songwriter, James Vincent McMorrow whose captivating songs sound both fresh and as if they’ve been in your head forever.  His live shows are simply spellbinding and James will be playing tracks from his debut album ‘Extracts From A Conversation’ as well as premiering new material.

One of the most talked about artists of the past 12 months, Django Django’s recently released debut album has more than justified the hype.  Their ultra modern strain of psychadelia has marked them out as a very special band indeed and attendance at this show is a must!  Canadian Tim Hecker plays a rare UK show at Sound City.  A favourite of Pitchfork and Wired magazine,
Tim’s cathedral electronic music explores the intersection of noise, dissonance and melody, mixing sub bass and static to mesmerizing effect.

One of Liverpool’s favourite acts, Space, have reformed and will be reminding everyone why they spent the mid nineties singing along to such distinctive anthems as ‘Female Of The Species’, ‘Neighbourhood’, ‘Avenging Angels’ and ‘The Ballad Of Tom Jones’.  Another act that have always refused to conform are The Wedding Present who have spent the last 25 years making bittersweet, breathtakingly honest, love songs that are immersed in whirlwind guitars.  Something of a national treasure, David Gedge will be performing tracks with the band from classic albums such as ‘George Best’, ‘Seahorses’, ‘Bizarro’ alongside more recent material.

Lower Than Atlantis have graduated from their early post melodic, hardcore to embrace a much grungier sound and have developed in one of the countries best live rock acts whilst Domino Records singer songwriter Eugene McGuinness will perform his angsty, carefree, hormone fuelled tracks that captivate audiences.

Other acts confirmed to play at Liverpool Sound City include The Big Sleep, Willis Earl Beal, Thunderbird Gerard, Still Corners, Mugstar, Stealing Sheep, Stephen Langstaff, Sissy & The Blisters, The Kill Van Kulls, Electric Guest, White Arrows, The Night, Lulu James, EJ, Said The Whale, Don Broco, Futures, Dan Croll, Capac and Ex Easter Island Head.

Liverpool Sound City is much acclaimed for working with partner countries to identify the best of their emerging talent and provide a platform for exposure in the UK and 2012 sees some fantastic acts landing at John Lennon airport to perform in this historic music city.  New Zealand bring Pikachunes, Princess Chelsea and Midnight Youth to Merseyside whilst Australia are represented by Step Panther, Millions, Inland Sea, Ben Salter, Bonfire Nights, Oliver Tank, Wim, Jackson Firebird, The Bowers and Sietta.  Canadian acts are Jordan Cook, Kestrels, Ben Caplan and Slow Down Moasses whilst Denmark and Italy complete the international flavour with Strangers On A Train and The Second Grace respectively.

Further announcements will be made shortly about the Sound City convention, Expo and UK Music Student Awards, all parts of this multi faceted 3 day international music, media and technology event.  Liverpool Sound Citycontinues to focus on the future, intent on bringing the best new music, film, art and more from all over the world to Liverpool.

Last week’s inaugural New York Sound City was a resounding success, marking a significant move forward in Sound City’s international events calendar.  Established as a pre curser to SXSW, New York Sound City sold out a week in advance and was attended by a number of exceptional music industry talents – many of whom made rare appearances.

The night time gig at Webster Hall featured a guest appearance from Jetlag, the new band of Andy Rourke from The Smiths, as well as performances from Paula I Karol, Tyburn Saints and the surely soon to be huge Dutch Uncles, whose irresistible shimmery songs captivated the audience.

The date of New York Sound City 2013 will be Monday, March 11th, 2013.

Dutch Uncles and Poland’s finest Paula and Karol added to inaugural New York Sound City event in March, headlined by The La’s playing their first New York show in 20 Years.

Tickets almost sold out for New York Sound City.  Last few available for the conference.

Liverpool Sound City, the 3 day international music, media and technology conference and live arts and music festival returns in May with another bold and innovative music programme and forward thinking conference. With Professor Green, White Denim and Death In Vegas announced as the first wave of artists, the 5th Liverpool Sound city is well on the way delivering its finest line up yet.  Announced today are a host of new artists who represent all that is pioneering and captivating in contemporary music.

Michael Kiwanuka was the winner of the BBC’s esteemed Sound Of 2012 poll, judged by all the key players in the music industry.  Signed to the Mumford and Son’s endorsed Communion Records, Michael Kiwanuka has toured with Laura Marlin and Adele and performs the bluesy, soulful, folk from his ‘Home Again’ album.  Mystery Jets release their 4th studio album in April and continue their slow burn ascendancy with quirky pop and harmony splashed tunes that are big and vibrant.

Alkaline Trio are a huge draw with a young, frenzied following.  Their turbo charged anthems are a potent mix of uplifting punk melodies and decidedly dark lyrics.  Slow Club‘s saccharine folk-pop and heart bursting songs are sure to be a festival highlight as are Willy Mason’s facetious anecdotes and colourful yarns.  A must see is Ghost Poet who made the shortlist for the 2011 Mercury Music Prize.  So won over was Gilles Peterson by his hypnotic lullabies that he signed him to his Brownswood Recordings label.

Alt- J have been tipped by everyone as an act to watch in 2012 and make the short trip across the Pennines to Liverpool from Leeds whilst from further afield, Sound City is delighted to welcome Australian indie darlings, The Jezabels.  Two other acts who have been making a stir on the music scene of late are Swedish duo Niki and the Dove who make goth tinged electro-pop and The Horrors endorsed Toy whose music is inspired by the speedy garage psychedelica of the late 60’s and German art rock of the early 70’s.

Acclaimed as the most influential live music platform for new and emerging artists, Liverpool Sound City will also play host to Forest Swords, The History of Apple Pie, Bear In Heaven, Folks, The Computers, Still Flyin', Jonquil, Shields, Towns, PINS and Bleached.

Uniquely for a city centre festival, Liverpool Sound City does not just showcase acts in traditional venues and this year performances will take place in warehouses, bombed out churches and a range of other locations giving fans a once in a lifetime chance to see bands in such captivating surroundings.

One of the key new additions to the Sound City event will be Sound City Expo, an event that brings together the newest and most forward thinking exhibitors to the Echo Arena, providing access for both consumers and music/digital professionals to the people, tools and services they will need as we move ever onwards in the digital age.  Sound City Expo will focus on the current and future intersection of music, art, business and technology - giving a real insight into what is possible in the modern age.

Earlier this year the Sound City team announced the first of a number of international shows in 2012 and they can confirm that Dutch Uncles have been added to the bill for New York Sound City on 12th March, supporting The La’s who play their first show in ‘The Big Apple’ in 20 years.  Dutch Uncles are one of the bands at the fore-front of Manchester’s vibrant new music scene and their unmistakable brand of prog pop has had the critics tipping them for success.  Poland’s finest act, Paula and Karol have also been confirmed for the show having gained numerous accolades in their home country and having been highlighted by the Guardian in their ‘Sound Of 2011 Around The World’ poll.

Liverpool Sound City continues to focus on the future, intent on bringing the best new music, film, art and more from all over the world to Liverpool.  With the inaugural New York Sound City show taking place in March and further international shows to be announced, this is an incredibly exciting time for Sound City
