Luke Fenlon Review @ The Masque Theatre Liverpool

I've heard Luke Fenlon's name mentioned a fair few times over the last few months, but I've not heard any of his material yet, so I was looking forward to finally hearing him live.

Taking to the stage at The Masque, Luke Fenlon closely resembles a very young Bob Dylan, with his mop of curls and black leather vintage jacket and from the moment his gravely vocals hit the air, you can understand why he's recently signed a major record deal.

With lyrics and a voice far beyond his years, he's only 19 just in case you were wondering, Luke flowed effortlessly through a flawless set, which included "Demons" a catchy little rock number, "That Girl" which had plenty of folk undertones courtesy of the cellist on stage. This was followed by, "Never Try, Never Fail", an angst ridden song, that had the small intimate crowd captivated.

He followed this with, "Beneath Factory Floors" a haunting ballad style song and, to finish the set "Gin" a song that proves that even the most simple lyrics and music can have an amazing effect.
After the crowd had cheered for more, Luke came back onto stage for an encore, combining, "Empire State of Mind" and "New York, New York". I have to admit, it didn't really work for me, but as he said, it was the first time he'd tried something like that, so we shall put that down to trial and error and hope he sticks to his own original music, he definitely doesn't need to do covers of any kind. Thankfully the set was finished with his own music.

With a voice that can go from gentle and soulful to gravely rock in a blink of an eye, brilliant lyricist and talented guitar player, I can see the UK and further afield will be hearing a lot more from this truly talented 19 year old very very soon.

The Tunnel Of Love End of Summer Party

The Tunnel Of Love End of Summer Party

The Soundcarriers, By The Sea, Eva Petersen & DJ Kool Aid Bob (Probe Records)

7.30pm, Saturday 18 September @ The Williamson Tunnels

5 days to go until we make our long awaited return to the Williamson Tunnels, for a special end of summer Tunnel Of Love Bash. From that hot-bed of psychedelic madness, Nottingham via some far off yet to be named galaxy, we welcome THE SOUNDCARRIERS who are touring in support of their critically acclaimed second album, Celeste.

The Soundcarrier’s recently released second LP, ‘Celeste’ [Melodic], received almost universal critical acclaim (a 4 out of 5 clean sweep across the monthly magazines - Mojo, The Guardian, Uncut, Q, The Times, Record Collector and Artrocker) for its unique analog mix of harmonies and groove. A sun-dappled, psychedelic take on 70s motorik pop, they’re best described in the words of Professor Justin Spear, “Exactly where The Soundcarriers were really 'coming from' was long in debate: Nottingham? The West Coast? Saturn? The sound moves between all three locales. It doesn't really matter where you land, the atmosphere is always perfect

"I Had A Girl is the best song ever written" - Jim Noir
"Very well written and produced" - Dan Snaith, Caribou
"Riveting" - Shindig
"A splendid future awaits" - Mojo
"Top banana" - NME
"Hauntingly beautiful and wide eyed" - Rough Trade Shops
"Exceptional" - Record Collector

Check out 'I Had A Girl' here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOI2ROoaTnk then buy yourself a ticket.

Wait, there's more...

Also starring at the tunnels will be one of our local favourites, and straight here from The Wirral (there must be something in the water over there) via Mersey Ferries the long awaited return of By The Sea, who have been taking some time off to record their debut EP inside Liverpool's Scandinavian Church. Their love of strange venue's doesn't stretch to underground tunnels,

If you close your eyes you can almost hear the sounds of the forest and the crackling of the campfire around you, and on the edge of the flickering light you can see the shadows of the imps and sprites of Mother Nature dancing in the gloaming light, weaving their spells and drawing you in. That is By The Sea, a new band to take you on a journey and cast you under their spell.

http://www.myspace.com/bytheseaside

We also welcome ex-Little Flame, Eva Petersen who will be sharing her own unique take on 60's retro cool, with a voice to make even Dusty Springfield weep, okay that was a bit far-fetched, but you get the jist. The current crop of nu-what ever you want to call it, yes you Adele, haven't got a patch on Eva.

http://www.myspace.com/evapetersenmusic

All this ably and abetted by Mr. Probe Records himself, Kool Aid Bob who will be providing the finest tunes straight from the shelves of Liverpool's best music store. Expect an eclectic set of obscure psychedelia, rare groove and everything else in-between. CRATE-DIGGERS OF THE WORLD REJOICE!

http://www.probe-records.com/

Tickets £8 available from Probe Records (School Lane) ticketline.co.uk, skiddle.com. Get there early to avoid disappointment, it will be more on the door.

Check out this nifty poster from our good friend, and artist extraordinaire, Gary 'The Horse' McGarvey. Check out his website aswell, where you can buy limited edition screen-prints from some of the shows he's been involved in including Steve Mason back at The Static Gallery in June, and also Shellsuit Album Launch at The Williamson Tunnels, which is on sale for a limited time only for only a fiver. All signed and numbered by the man himself.

Pete Doherty To Kick Off Ibiza Rocks

To celebrate the beginning of the 2010 season Ibiza Rocks is taking it right back to where this whole crazy adventure began.

That's right folks - to kick things off this year we're welcoming back Pete Doherty for an intimate, sunset-tinged, acoustic set at Ibiza Rocks' spiritual home: the Ibiza Rocks Bar slap bang on the beach in San Antonio.

This flat-out unmissable pre-season party takes place a week before the official start of Ibiza Rocks 2010 on Tuesday 1st June.

Pete's a longtime friend and fan of Ibiza; those of you with good memories will remember that it was he who first took Ibiza Rocks out of the back room of Manumission and into the open air with a legendary - not to mention chaotic - show at the beach bar way back in the early days of 2005 ...and Ibiza Rocks has never looked back!

We may have made the permanent move to the Ibiza Rocks Hotel in 2008 - but we're gonna break the rules for this one and let Pete push the boundaries yet again.

The beach bar has been completely refurbished for the 2010 season and we simply couldn't think of a better way of christening it than by hosting one of the finest songwriters of our generation.
