Soundcity 2012 - In Summary

Soundcity 2012 - In Summary

Well folks, SoundCity 2012 is over again for another year and over-all its been another shining achievement for Liverpool. This year seemed even more busier than previous years and people from various walks of life have descended on the city again to experience the wealth of talent this city has to offer.

This year saw even more venues attached to the festival which provided more scope for the line up to grow and diversify in its content. Venues like the Epstien Theatre provided the unique approach of sitting down to watch artists and this provided the perfect outlet for the likes of Luke Fenlon, Thomas J. Speight and Michael Kiwanuka to shine brightly. Other new venues like Liverpool  Academy of Arts and the Red Bull Live Studios made use of what was essentially derelict buildings and turning them into urban theatres of noise and sound.

The old favourites like the Kazimier and Zanzibar showcasing the finest in new bands and new talent and bigger venues like the o2 providing a more mainstream alternative to the the festival.

Though its not all positive and like any other large scale festival it has its problems and from talking to other festival goers there seems to be 2 major areas for concern.

The first is the size of venues and putting major acts on in them. The prime example for this was White Denim in the Kazimier. People who had paid good money for a wristband to see someone, don't expect to be stood in a queue in the rain because a venue has under estimated the amount of people wanting to see an act. I understand that at other festivals this occurs but its usually a large tent where at least if you cant get in you can still hear the bands. Bigger venues need to be used for large scale acts otherwise it wont work. The same happened for The Kooks last year at the bombed out church when gig-goers queued to get into the gig only to be disappointed. These are, I may add, one off occurrences. But as the festival continues to grow in both popularity and size, it needs to be taken into consideration in the future.

The second is the use of venue's that demand people to be scanned in or have ID on them (even press) to get in. Surely the point of buying a wristband should be enough. I wouldn't expect to turn up to the Reading festival turnstiles only to be told that I couldn't get in without having my passport on me.

The policies of HeebieJeebies and the Krazyhouse are in total contrast to the ethos of SoundCity and unless this changes bands who play these venues are not going to get the exposure or coverage they deserve.

That aside, SoundCity is still one of the best inner city festivals and continues to get better each year and continues to provide the much needed injection of enthusiasm and vibrance into the city.

film, art and more from all over the world to Liverpool. With the inaugural New York
Sound City show taking place in March and further international shows to be announced, this is an incredibly exciting time for Sound City.

Liverpool Sound City is thrilled to announce Professor Green as one of their
headliners. His debut album, ‘Alive Till I’m Dead’ crashed into the charts last year and went double-Gold, spawning four hit singles, singles with ‘I Need You Tonight’, ‘Just Be Good To Green’, ‘Monster’ and 'Jungle' amassing over 500,000 sales. The size of his army of Facebook friends – 1.3 million – tells it like it is: Professor Green is head and shoulders above any of his peers. His second album is due for release this summer and he will be premiering tracks from it at Liverpool Sound City.

Professor Green say’s "Liverpool is always a highlight of any tour so I'm delighted to be able to confirm Liverpool Sound City. I can't wait to get back there. Liverpool! Let’s have it!"

White Denim, the Texas four piece who blend garage, progressive and psychedelic rock
and are hugely lauded for their blistering live sets will perform tracks from their five revered and varied long players.

Also performing are psychedelic electronic innovators, Death In Vegas, playing tracks
from their ‘Trans Love Energies’ album. The record marks a return to their roots in
minimal techno, deploying the rudimentary gear behind all the classics of the original Detroit / Chicago era to try and spirit up fresh atmospheres.

Cloud Nothings, Yukon Blonde, Charli XCX, and Fixers showcase the new talent that
Sound City is renowned for promoting.

Liverpool Sound City is proud to be hosting the UK Music Student Awards at the
Echo Arena on 17th May. Launched by George Martin, the awards are in collaboration
with Access To Music and are hosted by BBC Radio 1’s Edith Bowman. For 8 years this
unique event has celebrated, identified and supported new talent within music education including Ed Sheeran and affirms Access To Music’s position as the link between the industry and music education. The awards and Access To Music programme give the stars of tomorrow an amazing opportunity to shine today with recognition directly from the music industry.

Sound City Expo takes its inspiration from the golden age of Expos, where the
new, the innovative and the exciting were brought together under one roof to
delight and amaze. The event will bring the newest and most forward-thinking
exhibitors to the Echo Arena in Liverpool - providing access for both consumers
and music/digital professionals to the people, tools and services they will need as
we move ever onwards in the digital age.

As a reaction to the traditional, staid music trade-shows that have proliferated the
calendar, Sound City Expo will focus on the current and future intersection of music, art, business and technology - giving a real insight into what is possible in the modern age.

Sound City Expo will be fully integrated into both the convention and festival offerings of Liverpool Sound City manifest in live demos, master classes, discussions and more featuring many performers and speakers.

Dave Pichilingi, CEO Sound City comments "We're thrilled to announce the first wave
of bands that'll make up the line-up for Liverpool Sound City 2012 - an eclectic mix of genres that makes our festival such an interesting, innovative, must-see event. We're taking Sound City to whole new level this year by bringing in Access To Music and co-hosting the UK Music Student Awards, which shows our commitment to the new breed of musicians and those who work in the music industry, as well as being a great excuse for a party. We're also launching our very own Sound City Expo - an exhibition of what's new and interesting in music and tech for fans, bands and delegates alike."

Liverpool Sound City brings established acts to intimate venues and introduces you to
tomorrow’s headliners today. With hundreds more bands, pop culture initiatives and
a conference programme to be unveiled, Liverpool Sound City is the UK’s premier
cultural happening.
