FlickaDotCircus announce new E.P. Compact33

RWD Magazine - “A little bit moody, a touch left-field, a tiny bit depraved, a fair amount funky, FlickaDotCircus have pulled together their Compact. 33 EP with all the influence a few drinks and a taste of funny smoke can provide.”

Introducing FlickaDotCircus, creating what they describe themselves as “interesting, non-regurgitated hip hop”. This forward thinking East London group are not to be messed with on their highly anticipated EP ‘Compact33’!

Following up on their successful single ‘Rabbits Vein’, Compact33 is a carefully pieced together masterpiece with exquisite guitar riffs and piano sections. Together it is are used as a sound bed for the inspired word play delivered by the contrasting sounds of the bands two MC’s Alfalfa, Nikolai Shine accompanied by vocalist Darna aka ‘Uncle Peez’. Their finishing touch is music producer LOA who the band themselves describe as holding him hostage until he would agree to work with them.

FlickaDotCircus have been working, mastering and producing their sound together over the last year. Members have been performing separately at the same gigs as The XX, Foreign Beggars, Reeps One and have performed at many gigs across the UK including the big summer festival ‘The Secret Garden Party’, Cargo, Liverpool Barfly and supporting the ‘Love Music Hate Racism’ campaign.

The Bluebeat Arkestra set to tour for Oxjam

The Bluebeat Arkestra

The Bluebeat Arkestra set to tour for Oxjam

Birmingham band The Bluebeat Arkestra are teaming up with Oxjam to play 10 shows during our festival period, playing 9 events across the Midlands, as well as an extra date in Islington. The tour, which includes four performances in one manic day on the 20th October, kicks off in Wolverhampton on 22nd of September and concludes in Coventry on the 27th October.

Tour dates:
22nd September – Wolverhampton
12th October – Islington
13th October – Mansfield and Birmingham
19th October – Derby
20th October – Lichfield, Lincoln, Beeston, Leicester
27th October – Coventry

Their energetic shows have established them as one of Birmingham’s most exciting live acts and they will undoubtedly make a huge impression on the stages they play. We’re hoping that their commitment to the cause, as well as their growing fan-base, will encourage people to come out and support them on their Oxjam tour, helping the festival to raise even more money for Oxfam. We’re so grateful to the band for taking part in this exciting adventure.

We strongly encourage all music fans to get along to their nearest Oxjam events and be part of a month-long musical celebration right across the country. Even more importantly, Oxjam is all about showing that the best in local music can have a global impact too. Since Oxjam start in 2006, events have raised in excess of £1.8 million to fight poverty around the world.
About the band: “For years we've been struggling, as have many reporters and reviewers, to describe our music. We consist of a drummer, guitar and bass (nothing too unusual there..) but also have trumpet, viola, synths, samplers. We have two female vocalists, Hayley, who is from a singer/songwriter background and Keji, our rapper.  Whilst the genres funk, punk, dance, hip-hop, soul, drum n bass and dubstep have all been used to describe us, really we're none of them. We're just us and have our own sound and that's it.” Said bassist Dave Breeze.

“We've had great support from OxjamBrum in the past three years. We've played on their no. 11 bus route, their ‘Boat that Oxjam Rocked’ event and we've played their takeover event the last two years. However this year we were asked to play at their conference which was held in Birmingham. We really enjoyed it and so did all of the other Oxjam reps from up and down the country. We were invited to play at a number of their events and the Bluebeat Arkestra Oxjam Takeover Tour 2012 is what has come of that.

Oxjam do so much to support local music that we're really honoured to be a part of this - and on such a grand scale. I think amidst the great support they give and the amazing events that they put on, sometimes the real underlying point of Oxjam. It saves lives. Hundreds, Thousands, Millions. To boast playing such a big part in saving lives makes music worth so much more in a day and age when with so much music around - it often counts for very little. It's going to be great fun, with a great cause. I really hope we help raise plenty of money.

We want to help raise as much funds for Oxjam as possible, so as well as touring for them and hopefully attracting punters to their events, we will also be releasing the first single on our record label - Hustle! Records - and donating all the proceeds to Oxjam. The single T.A.R.E (Sam Redmore Remix) is a great electronic remix of one of the songs from our last EP by Sam Redmore, a DJ from Birmingham who has also played at many Oxjam events. He DJ'd at the Oxjam tent at Leeds festival this year, so we are both very happy to be able to contribute towards the fundraising total. The single will be available for download from 15th October, which is smack-bang in the middle of our tour!”

About Oxjam: The Bluebeat Arkestra tour is part of our Oxjam month of music, which runs through the whole of October. Oxjam is a festival with a difference: thousands of fundraising music events are put on by ordinary people – from large-scale festivals to local sponsored busks – making it the biggest line-up of any music festival in the UK.

During October, more than 800 venues, 9,000 volunteers, 7,000 musicians and 150,000 audience members will enable Oxjam to raise at least £350,000 for Oxfam’s work.

The highlight of the month-long festival will be the Oxjam Takeover, a series of city-wide mini-festivals taking place in 44 locations across the UK, from the Shetlands to Torquay, during the month of October. At Takeover events, over 2000 musicians will perform to an audience of more than 40,000, all raising money to help Oxfam fight poverty worldwide

Since 2006, more than 45,000 musicians have played to an audience of more than 900,000 people at over 3,500 Oxjam events, raising in excess of £1.8 million to fight poverty around the world. Oxjam 2012 will take the total past the £2 million mark - enough to provide safe water to over 2 million people, feed 300,000 families or buy 80,000 goats!

Saint Saviour - Saturday 8 November 2012 £8

As Saint Saviour, Becky Jones (ex Groove Armada vocalist) has trodden an unconventional and uncompromising path towards artistic salvation. It hasn’t always been easy. It’s a story that stretches from the workhouses of Dickensian London to the arena house concerts across the globe. But throughout it all, and with her spectral and hypnotic debut album, she may just have emerged as one of the defining solo artists of her time.

Her incredible live show comes to Eric’s in Liverpool on Saturday 8 November. Aside from the genre-hopping musical thrills - are as much notable for her extravagant, theatrical costumes (Joan Of Arc projections on the walls, exploding balloon full of petals) and set-ups as they are for her visceral stage persona.

Sea of Bees - Saturday 10 November 2012 £10

Sea Of Bees announces new single Gone, released November 5 on Heavenly Recordings. The extraordinarily talented Sacramento native Julie Ann Baenziger, better known as Sea of Bees, will be bringing her beautifully idiosyncratic and effortlessly moving vein of off-kilter folk to the UK once again, on the heels of the release of her next single “Gone”, from her critically lauded sophomore album “Orangefarben”, released earlier this year on Heavenly Recordings.

As is coming to be typical of Sea of Bees, “Gone” is a gorgeous slice of offbeat, emotive guitar pop, as instantly infectious as it is deeply affecting. Stunning, concise, uplifting but with a roiling undertow, a song all the more potent when you see Sea of Bees live onstage. Make sure not to miss her biggest UK headline tour yet, with dates that start on November 6th in Leeds, ending at the breathtaking Union Chapel in London on the 19th.

“Devastating” – CD of the Week, Sunday Times Culture
“4 stars – if she doesn’t become the sensation she deserves to be it’ll be a crime” - Independent

Simon McBride - Sunday  18 November 2012 £10

The New Irish Guitar Hero is now among the best blues-rock players anywhere in the world. Predicted to be the next Irish blues guitar hero in the footsteps of Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore, former Young Guitarist of the Year McBride has undeniable guitar artistry combined with a fine voice and a real knack for creating memorable hooks and great melodies.

Simon comes to Liverpool with his band as part of a tour to promote his new CD Crossing The Line, a fiery amalgam  of guitar skills, songcraft and character-soaked vocals, spinning tales of girls, gambling and corporate avarice.

Ben Otwell (Gomez) - Wednesday 28 November £10

Ben Ottewell is a singer/songwriters in the successful Mercury Prize winning Southport rock band Gomez. Last year he released his first solo album, Shapes and Shadows via Eat Sleep Records. The nine tracks were recorded at The Chalet in Los Angeles, California and was co-produced by Ottewell and Will Golden and mixed by Tom Biller (Liars, Warpaint, Karen O & the Kids).

Over 5 years in the making, Shapes and Shadows is a collection of solo compositions pieced together and written in and around Gomez tours, recording sessions and breaks. They are born out of Ottewell’s desire to create something with a strong sense of simplicity and purity, to get away from the full band, electric sound of Gomez.

Shearwater- Thursday 29 November 2012 £10

The critically acclaimed art-rock band burst onto the scene in 2001 with The Dissolving Room. The Sub Pop signings from Austin, Texas are lead by Jonathan Meiburg. Shearwater as it’s been suggested—by fans, detractors, even by the band’s founder himself, that Shearwater and whatever we call underground/indie/whatever-rock in this part of the century are not an obvious fit. And that’s true. So much of what we hear these days (the lousy stuff, anyway) is willfully insular; Jonathan Meiburg’s songs, by contrast, have constantly tackled bigger questions and been propelled by massive musical ambitions.

Meiburg, presumably unfamiliar with the adage, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” has opted to ditch an approach that paid huge artistic dividends over his last three Matador albums for a record that seems shockingly direct, immediate and intensely personal. He’s no stranger to lush, crafted recordings, but this one sounds like no prior Shearwater incarnation. And please, don’t mistake that for a suggestion this is anyone’s notion of a traditional, singer-songwriter album. Immaculate and Breaking the Yearlings are inventive and confident in a manner that would humble most new artists, let alone Shearwater’s few veteran peers

The BBC One Show

The BBC One Show looking for musicians @ Erics Liverpool

The BBC’s One Show are working with Liverpool council to inspire those who haven’t played a musical instrument in years, to dust off their old guitars, drums, cellos, violins, trombones etc. and start to play again, culminating in a performance live on TV. We are not asking for a perfect performance, it’s just about getting having a go, and most of all having a bit of fun.

We are looking to find those who are able to commit to rehearsing (in the Liverpool area) on Tuesday 2nd October between 11.30am and 4.30pm, and then to perform live on The One Show on Wednesday 3rd October.

We really need people who may have been in bands that performed at the Cavern, Eric’s and other such venues in the 70’s 80’s and early 90’s… The only thing is we need people that for one reason or another haven’t performed publicly in quite a long time…

The Association of Independent Music (AIM) are excited to announce the full category shortlists for the second AIM Independent Music Awards.

Leading lights of the rock scene, Enter Shikari top the list with a total of three nominations for Best Live Act, Hardest Working Band and Independent Album of the Year, for their third album, A Flash Flood of Colour. Following closely on their heels are Alabama Shakes who are nominated for Independent Breakthrough Of The Year and Independent Album Of The Year for their critically acclaimed album, Boys and Girls. Hot from his performance at the Olympic Opening Ceremony Frank Turner picks up two nominations for Best Live Act amd Hardest Working Act and finally the Nutty Boys, Madness have clocked up nominations for PPL Award For Most Played Independent Act and the Special Catalogue Release Of The Year.

Enter Shikari said of the nominations - "Its an honour to be nominated for not one but three awards. the Independent Album of the Year and Best Live Act award nominations mean a lot to us, and the Hardest Working Band feels appropriate right now (at time of writing, we're in a jet lagged haze in Brisbane, Australia). Even if we end up walking away with no actual awards, it was nice that the independent world thought of us enough to nominate us for these coveted gongs. Bring it on."

An excited Madness said "Just when we thought we couldn't top the Jubilee and The Olympics along come two nominations from AIM to knock our socks off.”

Alongside a wealth of established mainstream talent nominated including The Prodigy, Adele and Arctic Monkeys, the AIM Independent Music Awards also feature nominations for some of the music scene’s brightest new talents, rising stars and underground heroes, including Django Django, Alt-J, Grimes, Poliça, First Aid Kit, Skinny Lister, Rustie, Liars, Future of the Left, The Invisible and Amon Tobin.

With 11 of the Awards’ categories voted for by an expert panel of judges from across the music industry and a further 3 categories voted for by the public, the Awards honour the abundance of outstanding artistic, label and entrepreneurial talent within the independent music sector. Taking place on October 29th 2012 at The Brewery in Clerkenwell, London, the ceremony will be hosted by renowned radio presenters Huw Stephens and Steve Lamacq.

CEO of AIM Alison Wenham said of the awards. “We have doubled capacity for this years ‘Most Difficult Second AIM Awards (!)’ and the nominations are once again outstanding. These awards will recognise another great year for independents’ creativity and ingenuity, with Ninja Tune and Xtra Mile leading the nominations list. The companies and artists are all so special they should all get a medal, but a decent three course meal and an evening spent amongst friends is a prize in itself.”

With Edwyn Collins and Mute’s Daniel Miller already announced as recipients of the Outstanding Contribution To Music Award and the Pioneer Award respectively, the winners for the remaining 13 categories, will be unveiled exclusively at the ceremony.

Steve Parry
10pm till 4am
£8.00 tickets or £10 otd/ 0151 707 0633
Zanizbar,  43 Seel Street  Liverpool, Merseyside L1 4AZ

To celebrate 20 years since their seminal debut single Muzik Xpress, X-Press 2 have hooked up with promoters Mestura to present a night of house music that will encompass their influences and their biggest tunes, as well as a selection of classics, right through to the present day. The night is part of a celebration world tour and look forward to them playing the Zanzibar on the 1st Dec with support from Andy Carroll and Steve Parry.

Such is their swashbuckling sense of adventure, it’s hard to believe that X-Press 2 have been at the vanguard of British electronic music for two decades now. Whether it’s as musicians, DJs or remixers, the London duo share the same sense of musical discovery that first united them on the acid-house dance floors of Shoom and Spectrum and the Balearic playgrounds of Ibiza. A pioneering spirit that fuelled early Nineties underground anthems such as the percussive, US-influenced Muzik Express and London X Press. And why not? Chutzpah that helped them create languid deep house classics like Lazy and Give It with vocalists as unlikely - yet inspired - as David Byrne of Talking Heads and Kurt Wagner of Lambchop. A DJ bravado that led to them thinking, two decks are for wimps. Why not six or seven? Why not twelve?

The Three Musketeers have recently become two, with the departure of Ashley Beedle, but its full steam ahead for remaining members Rocky and Diesel. We shouldn’t read anything into Beedle's absence beyond the pressures of combining his solo and production work with X-Press 2, insists Rocky. It just got to the stage where Ash was trying to do too much. He’s the kind of guy who, if he could please everyone, he would, but it just wasn’t conducive to producing good music on either side. It’s absolutely cool between us - we're still good mates and the door is always open if he ever wants to get involved again.

So, now X-Press 2 are two, what does the future hold? In short - loads. Lazy is currently to be heard at a cinema near you, as part of the soundtrack Byrne and Brian Eno contributed to Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. Then there are the two EPs they’ve recorded with Tim Deluxe, a kindred spirit whom they got to know well when they shared DJ bills at the Ministry of Sound. Small-hours monsters such as Tonehead Chemistry and Siren Track combine the heads-down grooves with which they made their name (Classic X-Press 2, says Rocky) with spacious, action-packed breakdowns They’re the most visceral, dance floor-geared productions Rocky and Diesel have been involved with for years.

Obviously, with Ashley leaving, the dynamic has changed, says Diesel. But we are carrying on the X-Press 2 sound and developing it. The key is that the pair are as excited about music as they were when they first met in Hayes, Middlesex in the mid Eighties. In their DJ sets - now on a relatively restrained four decks and CDJs - and on their Thursday evening show for Ministry Radio they steer away from the Lazy era and chart a new course through 21st century house of every hue, from the lush and stately to the sparse and jacking. We are just overwhelmed by how much great stuff there is, smiles Diesel. We just can’t get everything in.

The pair see strong parallels between their Balearic formative years and the irreverent eclecticism of 2010. Our earliest influences were pre-house warehouse parties where you had rare groove, soul, jazz, go-go music, all different sorts of stuff being played, says Diesel. In Ibiza in the late Eighties, we’d be dancing to Acid Trax, then a Rolling Stones record, or the Woodentops. And 20 years later, says Rocky, there’s a bit of that going on again. Clubs like the Social have an anything-goes ethos - King Tubby one minute, a dubstep record the next and then a house thing.

When things get sectioned off you just lose all sense of progression or creativity, says Diesel. So when it came to working on their untitled forthcoming album, it was time to scale back the club dates and retreat to the studio armed with a spectrum of music old and new. With us, it’s always records, because we're DJs and record collectors, says Rocky. Lately, their ears have  been filled with everything from Fifties rockabilly, Sixties gospel and Eighties boogie through to up-to-the-minute gems by leftfield electronic voyager Caribou and Brooklyn house wunderkind Felix Feygin.

As that colourful selection suggests, Rocky and Diesel retain their taste for the unexpected, especially when it comes to selecting guest vocalists. We always try and go for someone whose not associated with dance music, says Rocky. For the new album, that means people like Rob Harvey, former frontman of Leeds alt-rockers the Music, who previously collaborated with X-Press 2 on Kill 100 and co-wrote a new track called The Blast. The lyrics are quite cryptic, says Diesel. I haven’t asked him what they mean yet. It’s got a double chorus and its bit Lennon-ist that’s Lennon, not Lenin.

Things get fiercer on another album track, “This is War”, which features Hannah Scanlon of Brighton’s incendiary indie outfit Doll and the Kicks. “She’s got a really powerful voice and the song is fucking nuts,” says Diesel. “What really appealed to us is the fact that it’s about war rather than throwing your hands in the air and loving everyone, “ says Rocky. “We want war, we want shit to happen!”

Indeed, in X-Press 2’s world of limitless possibilities, only one thing is certain. We will never make a song that says; Take me higher, insists Diesel. That’s just never gonna happen. Rest assured - Rocky and Diesel are as restless and averse to predictability as ever. Long may the adventure continue…

Rupert Stroud's Brand New Video for Latest Single ‘Twisted Games’

Rupert Stroud presents the brand new video for his latest single ‘Twisted Games’. Filmed in an old, dilapidated mill in West Yorkshire the video perfectly compliments Stroud’s haunting vocals, sombre verses and menacingly rich arrangements.

Stroud is also giving away a free download of the single’s B-Side ‘No Peace of Mind’ here:

http://bit.ly/TuCACz

Rupert Stroud started out playing the Yorkshire gig circuit as a solo acoustic artist penning his debut Rupert Road along the way. He was discovered by eminent British producer Will Jackson (The Kaiser Chiefs, Embrace, The Cribs, The Music) who adamantly brought Rupert into his studio to record. Stroud’s second album ‘Chasing The Night’, again with Will Jackson as producer, brought Stroud to wider acclaim securing a huge host of online support, national press features and well received slots amongst incredible line ups at Live at Leeds and Galtres Festival 2012.

Mick Bedford on drums and Mike Pearson on keys and guitar are now permanent fixtures in Rupert’s line-up. As the three evolved into a dynamic group, around the recording of ‘Chasing the Night’, Stroud was set apart from the usual singer/songwriter status quo. They are often joined on stage by songbird Kate Peters, primarily a jazz singer, who also sings backing vocals on ‘Chasing The Night’.

Jake Bugg First 2013 tour dates announced

Jake Bugg, the fast-rising hitmaker from Nottingham has announced a new set of dates, his first for 2013. This will be his biggest UK headline tour so far, and will follow his forthcoming sell-out autumn tour, as well as dates in Europe and the US with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Snow Patrol.

“Jake Bugg”, his eponymously-titles debut album, is released 15th October alongside the new single “Two Fingers”. His debut album is 14 songs, clocking in at under 40 minutes, that belie his eighteen years. Sharp, observant and honest, they inhabit a world no other new UK act is currently operating in. It opens with recent single “Lightning Bolt”, a scorching blues number with his Telecaster to the fore. New single “Two Fingers” follows with its swaggering chorus, whilst the likes of “Country Song” and “Broken” are more reflective. It’s a perfectly paced record, one that marks out Jake as the most exciting new UK act of 2012 and manages to effortlessly straddle the gap between authenticity and mainstream appeal. He counts Noel Gallagher, Lily Allen, Elton John, Chris Martin, Damon Albarn and Snow Patrol amongst his fans and has supported Michael Kiwanuka, Example and Lana Del Rey.

MusicMafia presents The High Commissioners

The High Commissioners

MusicMafia presents The High Commissioners

Meet The High Commissioners; young psychedelic blues outfit living in North London. Since summer 2011 the gregarious group have been fervently immersing themselves within the city’s music scene, frequenting the brightly decorated small stages such as Shoreditch’s Cargo, as well as the endearingly reputable old venues like The Hawley Arms in Camden Town.

Domenico stomps a groove based punch with a tribal rhythm on the drums, whilst vocalist Will exclaims a dreamy melancholic lyric with a soulful holla

that playfully romanticises ideals of mischief and decadence, decorated by the classically educated lead guitarists Facundo and Felix plucking thoughtfully constructed melodies on their jazzy reverb-laced guitars with a heavy kind of Rock n Roll gusto. The songbook does appear to be rooted in blues, but also displays influence from 60s surf pop, neo-psychedelia, Californian rock and Soul music.

As well as continuing to spread their performance through cities and towns of the south of England such as Reading, Bristol, Bath and Brighton, the four also travel over to Paris where Facundo and Felix originally hail from, commanding popular underground hot-spots such as ‘le Pop in’ and ‘l’International,’and even busking for smaller audiences on the Parisian streets when breaking from the stage.

The band has always shown keen interest in the live scene, but it is
important to mention they have been working on the writing and recording of their debut album in the studio; produced by guitarist Felix. Proclaiming

wishes to be a self-manufactured band, all aspects of their work whether it artwork, video or even web design have been constructed and developed by the group themselves or close friends; a truly DIY band.

The Mouth Of Ghosts

The Mouth Of Ghosts - 'When The Sun Sets' - released 29th Oct

London-based quintet The Mouth of Ghosts prides itself on a unique creation: a fusion of alternative rock and trip-hop, with lashings of atmosphere and tension in their tracks.
Having met in early 2011, founding band members Simon Langford and Marco Italia met Alla Seydalieva, matching her stunning vocals with haunting, ragged guitar melodies and moody bass. Drummer Phil Page joined the trio in late 2011 and in March 2012, Valerie Deniz (vocals, synth) made the band a five.

The final creation, the current incarnation of The Mouth Of Ghosts exudes sexy alt-rock textures and layers of atmosphere and intrigue. In parts their arrangements are sweet and pretty. In others, they can be forcefully brilliant.

In August 2012, The Mouth of Ghosts signed to Red Dragon Records.  The single 'When The Sun Sets' will be released on 29th October 2012 (with 'Close' as a B-side), and has already received support from BBC Radio 6 as well as numerous other stations.

The band plans to follow up this release before the end of the year, demonstrating the force that they have indeed become.

Oct 15, Featured Artist Slot @ Vibe Bar, London
Oct 26, 'When The Sun Sets' single launch party, Mother Live, London

Liverpool band Space reformed last December to play a sell out Christmas show at the 02 Academy. They head back to the venue on Friday 26 October as part of a national tour. The track Frightened Hoarse's is available now on download.  Their forthcoming album Attack of the Mutant 50ft Kebab will be out next year.

The line-up features original band members Tommy Scott (vocals/guitar)  and Franny Griffiths (keyboards). Along with Phil Hartley (double bass/bass), Ryan Clarke (vintage keys)
and drummer Allan Jones who will replace Andy Parle who sadly died in 2009 and Jamie Murphy (vocals/guitar) left the band due to musical differences.

The platinum selling band came to prominence in the mid 1990's with hit single such as Female of the Species, Neighbourhood, Avenging Angels, Me and you Verses the World and The Ballad of Tom Jones. They worked with Tom Jones in 1999 and Cerys Matthews a year earlier. The band formed in 1993 and released four studio albums, plus a number of charting singles, before disbanding in 2005.

Championed by BBC Introducing's Dave Monks, recording a one off sell out live gig at the Cavern Club for the BBC's Live Lounge Liverpool sessions, The Mono LP's are considered one of Liverpool's bright young things attracting a lot of attention and selling out venues all over the UK.

Headlining shows for Alan McGee's (Oasis, Creation Records) Death Disco night in the Notting Hill Art Club London and Liverpool, the band also played this year's Kendal Calling Festival. The band goes from strength to strength as they intend to release their first single, since signing a deal with Cavern Records, and embark on their first major tour. Vicky, from the band, has worked with The View and The Blood Red Shoes on their last two albums.

Edgar Jones, the former Stairs singer/Paul Weller bassist/Jones's frontman also joins the bill

Allegro release their debut album "Forever" this October

Allegro

Allegro release their debut album "Forever" this October

In October 2010 it was all happening for Allegro, described as the band that could have been, Allegro were famous for their haphazard, energy fuelled, sweaty anarchic shows that supported the likes of The Holloways, Reefs, The Towers of London and the Motown icon that is, Martha Reeves – to name just a few.

After playing a sell out support at the 02 and getting attention from their local radio stations it looked like it was going to happen for them (whatever that means).

They had built up an interesting cult of followers from indie kids, beer boys, posh-chicks with daddy issues, drag acts to fugitives could all be seen loitering on the premises of wherever Allegro were playing. They were all outsiders who until Allegro came along hadn’t fitted in elsewhere but now were all part of the Allegro Army - and it all kind of snowballed from there.

Unfortunately after signing to a minor label for a pittance the album was delayed and delayed until the band eventually split. That was the end - with the record label still owning the right to anything Allegro.

After a long struggle Allegro have finally been given permission to release the album and what could be more punk than releasing an album that can’t actually get anywhere because the band are no more!

It should have been heard and now here it is.

Austin the singer songwriter had the stage presence and wrote the tunes to match in abundance, Mark the three and a half fingered guitarist could play any instrument he could get his hands on, Ian the drummer was the reincarnation of Keith Moon on drums and added the rock n roll edge, tunesmith Dan knocked out killer riffs on keyboards along with Jay the Bassist, they all added something to Allegro in their own different way.

The album was recorded and mixed in just four days on a budget of only £1100, recorded partly off the bands own backs, it could be up there as one of the great British debut Albums. It’s the voice of youth and not giving a f**k, about wanting to get out from your surroundings and believing you just might.

Austin the lead singer says “I just wanted to put on record how much fun being in Allegro was… it’s a great album, it was a wonderful time and I hope whoever stumbles on it enjoys it as much as me”.

Melinda Ortner announces free stream of new single, Sweet Little Lies

Award-winning Californian songwriter Melinda Ortner announces that her forthcoming single, Sweet Little Lies, is now available to stream online. Officially released October 8th and taken from the forthcoming EP Strangers, released on September 17th, Ortner reveals a little more about the single’s origin;

“Sweet Little Lies is an angsty, poetic statement and inner monologue that more girls than not have at one point related to…the headspin and mind game of getting led on by someone you think is fantastic…and then...nothing…And when you thought this one might be different. I’ll be fully candid here and say the subject of the story was from an online dating website. I was younger and much more stupid. Deep down, I knew the B.S. men pull for a little tail, and by the same token we girls eat it up knowing all too well it’s a load of crap but we do it anyways..for the chance that he’ll prove us wrong, or just because it still feels fucking good to be swooned, charmed and flattered. Fake sugar is just as sweet as the real shit right?”

Buzzcocks @ Eric's Liverpool Friday 16 November 2012

Buzzcocks

Buzzcocks @ Eric's Liverpool Friday 16 November 2012

There are hardly any bands performing today that genuinely deserve the adjective ‘legendary’. Buzzcocks are one of those very few. Their achievements are staggering: one of the original holy trinity of British punk (with the Sex Pistols and the Clash), innovators of the independent record scene and genuine punk rock superstars who have been cited as inspirational by bands as diverse as REM, Nirvana and Green Day. Eight studio albums, over twenty singles and EPs, a constellation of compilations, covers by other bands and songs on film soundtracks and advertisements have put Buzzcocks among the top echelons of British recording artists. A Mojo Inspiration award in 2006 is just one of the many accolades they have received for their work.

Buzzcocks have been thrilling audiences for over thirty years. Once called ‘the Beatles of punk’, their music blends high-octane guitar, bass and drum power with heartrending personal statements of love won and lost or dismay at the modern world to create a unique catalogue of unforgettable and immortal music – music they continue to deliver to fans old and new around the world with  undiminished passion and energy.

Buzzcocks have forged a unique relationship with their public and are deeply loved and revered by a global audience. They are simultaneously true to their original ideals and open to new ideas – a happy result of their own uncompromising and individual standing.

Over the years, generations of musicians have tried the Buzzcocks methodology and have made their own variations of it. Most are generous in their thanks to the band that started it all. Those impressed by the recent waves of 'punk' bands would do well to spend an afternoon with Buzzcocks' seminal pop treasure Singles Going Steady, consistently the band’s biggest seller and a masterclass in genre-busting songcraft. This compilation of their first UK Top 40 hits is a classic album in every

sense, an astounding collection of stunning moments such as ‘Orgasm Addict’, ‘What Do I Get?’ the anthemic ‘Harmony In My Head’ and, of course, the song that has become their calling card: ‘Ever Fallen In Love With Someone (You Shouldn’t’ve Fallen In Love With?)’. These songs have been covered by dozens of groups in many styles, a testament to the originals' strengths not as slices of punk rock history but as examples of songwriting craft.

Buzzcocks are the true godfathers of punk-pop, having laid down that infinitely superior archetype. They are also a band with a past, present, and future. It is a history the group's members could never have imagined back in the hot punk rock summer of '76. Says Pete Shelley: "Looking back on it now, what's going on is like echoes of the Big Bang. You look around you in society and the culture; so many things would not have been the same if there never was punk rock. It's strange; it's like a science fiction novel. But to us at the time, it just sprung naturally."

They're still doing it, better than anyone. Sometimes the archetype is clearly the best. Buzzcocks – no. 1 in people’s hearts. Icons, superstars, legends.
