Ibiza, 6th May 2011 (FIX Ibiza). Proving once again and without a shadow of a doubt that Ibiza has a lot more to offer than just ‘la música electrónica’, organisers of the island’s first Rockabilly Festival, ROCK N MOLA, have announced that the retro extravaganza will take place over 20 hours on Saturday 14th May in La Marina, Ibiza Town.
Starting at midday and continuing through to the wee small hours of Sunday morning, the idea for the vintage celebration is one that has been a-cooking in organisers’ minds for quite some time already; ‘anything goes as long as its retro’, seems to be the general thinking behind the concept. With a line-up that includes bands, DJs and artists from the international rockabilly scene as well as local performers, the event will also host a lindy hop dance course, vintage hair&make up workshop as well as, of course, the vintage market itself.
Rockabilly Rhythms
Amongst bands confirmed to perform at Rock N Mola are Marcos Sendarrubias & The Tomahawks. Sendarrubias, previous front man of The Nitemares and Moon River Trio and a renowned name on the Spanish rockabilly scene as well as collaborator on Radio 3 España is looking forward to showcasing his new band on the island as part of this 1st edition of the Rock n Mola festival. This is the real deal and a rare chance to see Sendarrubias in the Baleares.
Next up, all the way from the Republic of Ireland, it’s Candy and The Creeps, a four piece from Dublin whose front woman, Candice Gordon, is getting ready to let it rip on the Rock n Mola stage. With influences that include The Cramps and The Stray Cats, Candy, who has also worked closely with The Pogues’ Shane McGowan, not only looks the part, she sounds the part too.
Joining them, Mallorca’s Black Cats will also perform at the festival, both in the Mercado Viejo at midday and again later that night in La Marina. With a sound that ranges from Hillbilly-Bop to classic rock n roll, and influences that span the decades- from the likes of Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Bill Haley to the neo-rockabilly of the 80s- Stray Cats and Restless as examples.
Last up on the live tip, Japan’s Fukishima New Clear Sound Makina has confirmed that they are preparing a previously unseen performance that should not be missed, taking its inspiration not only from the recent disaster in Fukishima’s homeland and adding a healthy dose of Elvis The King to the proceedings. FNCSM is also plugged in for a DJ set post-live show; this is Japanese Rockin’ at its best.
The DJs
Speaking of DJs for the event and Rock n Mola are proud to bring one of the Spanish rockabilly scene’s best known faces out of retirement, in the form of BEBOP NANDO. Aka Fernando Franco. BeBop is originally a native of Ibiza and one half of one of Spain’s much loved and sadly missed rockabilly bands- ROCK N BORDES- that toured extensively throughout the 80s and 90s.
Bebop heads up a list of DJs that also includes DANIBOY PEREZ (former member of Mad Rumblers and Rock n Bordes), TART WITH A HEART (Ibiza Rocks Resident DJ), PACHI GLUTEN&TOGA INSULINA (Madrid), STRAY KITTEN (Ireland), BEN DE MIEDO (Ibiza) and instantly recognisable Mexican glamourpuss and electro-rock DJ DAISY HEARTBREAKER. Last but not least, just back from his recent tour in Spain and his highlight gig at Freakland Festival, ALEJANDRO APARICIO will also be keeping the Rock N Mola dancefloor jivin’.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
As the event continues to take shape, venues confirmed to participate in ‘La Ruta Mola ‘, are LOLAS, AK PEPUA, CAN POU, BAR MARAVILLAS, DE MIEDO and LO CURA, all intrinsic and legendary watering holes in the Port of Ibiza Town. Aside from them, a number of local businesses have jumped on board to support the festival, with restaurants and cafes including Croissant Show, Pizzeria 4.Zero and Café Tomate also taking part.
VINTAGE LOVE & LINDYHOP
As for Ibiza’s first Vintage Fair? Set up in and around the Mercado Viejo and La Marina, a number of vintage stores and sellers have already jumped at the chance to get their old-fashioned frocks and retro wares out. Collaborators include Flamingos Vintage, Shirt Gigolo, Ibiza Stones, La Marimorena and Ibiza Rocks Vintage and the market will run from midday till late evening on Calle es Passidis. Organisers have also confirmed Deva Models to manage their Vintage Runway to take place at Portal Ses Taules, part of the World Heritage site on which Rock n Mola will take place.
As for the real deal in retro hair dos, Antonio B will lead the team accompanied by Ibiza’s own version of Amy Winehouse, Maria Araque Cabanillas , fresh out of the Llongueras Hairdressing School. The workshop will take place between Antonio B’s and Bar Maravillas.
Meanwhile, back to the dancing and places on the LINDY HOP Introductory Course are filling up fast. The course, which will last for 2hrs30 and which costs 35€, is being run by Juan Antonio Fanlo and Ruth Bartoleme, two professional dancers from Barcelona who have specialized in teaching the Lindy Hop for several years. The dance, which was originally popular at the end of the 1920s is described as a crossbreed of Charleston and jive and is high energy if nothing else, the craze currently very much back in vogue across Europe.
All in all, it looks like organisers have lined up a heap of rockin’ rollin’ activities for the public for the day of the event and are ‘delighted to finally present Rock n Mola in not only one of the island’s key locations but also, its most treasured, with World Heritage history plain to see all over Ibiza’s Old Town. We want to create a fun event that has the public dance to a different tune- good old rock n roll’. Councillor of the World Heritage site, Marc Costa Tur, heralded the event as ‘ a great initiative for Ibiza’.
So, there you have ROCK N MOLA. A Rockabilly bonanza in La Marina, Ibiza,
Because Rock n Roll is the new Rock n Roll!
