The Ukuleles - bringing Hawaii to the UK this August
A new Ukulele phenomena and revival has been happening all over the world and has now hit the University campus’s, beaches and homes across the UK. This small 4-string guitar has been riding high on a wave of popularity of late and has become a symbol of laid back, relaxed and good will vibes. The fastest selling musical instrument in Britain and one of the most inexpensive has taken over from the recorder as the primary school instrument that children learn to play.
The Ukuleles are a fresh new young and exciting band who are capturing a musical moment in history. Logan a self taught player discovered his love of the instrument at a very early age when he lived in Hawaii, he honed his skills and mastered the instrument very quickly after watching the Hawaiians finger movements as the strummed. When he returned to the UK he explored other instruments but would always come back to the simplistic and soothing sounds of the Uke.
Fast forward to 2012 and Logan was at the Great Escape Festival in Brighton when he spotted Martha who was performing with her Uke on the ACM stage. He felt an immediate connection, they were introduced and very quickly formed a firm friendship over many days on the beach strumming and jamming with friends. Martha had already gained a reputation as a credible singer and Uke player on the Internet and festival gig circuit. She picked up a Uke after watching her hero Jack Johnson in concert and fell in love with it.
With Logan’s credible and authentic Hawaiian grounding, Logan saw a unique opportunity to team up with Martha and a ukulele playing band of friends to form a band to represent the current culture of what is happening today and throw in some new ukulele songs too. The Ukuleles were born.
A twist of fate came one Sunday afternoon when the band were jamming on the beach and were spotted by hit records producers Jeff Chegwin and Nick Patrick. They were so impressed they signed them to a recording deal immediately (Demon Music Group) and started recording straight away. The Ukuleles will release their debut album at the end of August and this will include tracks such as ‘5 Years Time’, ‘A Team’, ‘Call Me Maybe’, ‘Forget You’, ‘Rolling In The Deep’ as well as some great original songs.
Stripped back, laid back, the perfect all year round summer sound.
