The amazing Chilly Gonzales live dates in December

Chilly Gonzales will release Solo Piano II on 27 August 2012, eight years after the now widely revered predecessor.

Released to little fanfare all the way back in 2004, Solo Piano is a stunning collection of delicate piano pieces composed and performed by Chilly himself.  A curveball to his fans, who at the time were more familiar with his prankster hip hop, it added depth and mystery to an already intriguing character. Word of mouth spread, and in time it has become his most acclaimed recording, selling over 100, 000 copies.

Since then, the self-proclaimed musical genius has shape-shifted his way through many a musical genre and persona, from Grammy nominated super producer and Guinness world record holder, to becoming the go-to guy for piano compositions for the likes of Drake, Feist, Daft Punk and even the late Steve Jobs. Chilly drew attention to his versatility as a performer as well as virtuosity as a pianist; rare is the artist who can make people dance, then turn a symphonic orchestra into a back-up band for a rap concert.

And then it went quiet. After years of entertaining as a larger than life musical chameleon and challenging other artists to work tirelessly and achieve excellence out of respect for their fans, Chilly Gonzales moved his piano into Paris’ Studio Pigalle, and simply played it. There, alone for 10 days, he recorded a handful of songs that had made the shortlist from a hundred or so melodies written over the years since Solo Piano. Hour upon hour, Chilly played the songs over and over, until each one’s essence had been captured, a process of writing and recording in its purest form.

The result, 14 exquisite piano compositions that make up Solo Piano II, is perhaps Chilly Gonzales’ most powerful argument of all in his quest for the highest form of entertainment possible for his fans. Indeed, it is the mark of a true entertainer to recognise when it is, as Chilly himself noted, time to simply “shut up and play the piano”.

Chilly Gonzales will play a very special show at the Barbican in October with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, where he will perform pieces from Solo Piano II, some favourites from over the years and première his newly-written Piano Concert.  He will also be dropping by Latitude Festival in July, with more dates to be announced soon.
