Kan Wakan release their video for Like I Need You
With a name inspired by the Tagalog (Filipino vocalist Kristianne Batista’s native language) word for interstellar / outer space “Kalawakan” Kan Wakan, are, like their titular counterpart, a far-reaching, multi-dimensional proposition. Their debut album ‘Moving On’ is a space odyssey. It takes in psychedelic soul, post rock, alternative Americana, noir jazz, 60s soundtrack stylings and orchestral pop.
Founder member / composer / producer / multi-instrumentalist Bulgarian Gueorgui I. Linev and producer / guitarist Peter Potyondy sought to explore “the juxtaposition of song and symphony” when Gueorgui first began writing and composing the songs which were to become the musical DNA of Kan Wakan.
So impressed by the newcomers work were US TV legends HBO, that they adopted ‘Like I Need You’ as the sound bed for their Spring 2014 campaign trailer.
Kan Wakan’s core trio expands to include a further four members live and the album was produced by Linev (aka Crooked Waters) and co-produced by Potyondy and multiple GRAMMY® Award winning producer / engineer Darrell Thorp (Radiohead, Beck, Gnarls Barkley). The sessions were adorned with sumptuous strings performed by the Metamorphosis Chamber Orchestra and conducted by Linev’s beloved uncle Stefan Linev music director / conductor for the Bulgarian Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra.
‘Moving On’ will be released in the UK on 11th August through Virgin EMI and the band will return to the UK in September 2014.
