Sheffield synthpop stars, Heaven 17 have announced a tour of ‘The Luxury Gap’, the band’s second album and biggest commercial success.
Landmark single from the record, ‘Temptation’, charted at Number 2 on the UK Singles Chart and spawned two further chart hits ‘Come Live With Me’ (UK #5) and ‘Crushed By The Wheels Of The Industry’ (UK #17). The 1983 album peaked at Number 4 in the UK Album Charts and was certified Platinum by the BPI in 1984.
‘The Luxury Gap’ has never been more relevant. Written during the height of Thatcherism by three Left-leaning you men, against a backdrop of over 3 million unemployed, the parallels with the Austerity Britain of today are obvious. Heaven 17’s sly, post-modern critique of modern society has never sounded more so resonant.
Heaven 17 remain hugely influential on many contemporary artists appropriating the 80s electro sound. See Martyn Ware and Glenn Gregory perform ‘The Luxury Gap’ on 9 dates across the UK this autumn, ending in the Capital at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire on Saturday 3rd November.
