‘Done For Desire’ is the debut album by Damn Vandals, following on from the highly acclaimed ‘Beautiful Mind’ EP, which garnered passionate support across radio and print media, including being made Shaun Keaveny’s ‘Record of the Week’ on his BBC6 Music Breakfast Show. It’s produced by Julian Simmons, whose credits include Midlake, The Phenomenal Handclap Band, Ed Sheeran, Guillemots, and Goldheart Assembly.
George Bernard Shaw called dancing ‘The vertical expression of a horizontal desire legalized by music’, and this theme of desire, albeit in myriad forms, unites the music on this album. Whether for sex, power, possessions, knowledge, pleasure, destruction or change, the lyrics of Jack Kansas wryly explore consequences over an evocative and mesmerising soundtrack.
The deep and powerful distinctive vocals of Jack Kansas have drawn comparisons with David Bowie, Mark Lanegan, Jim Morrison and Matt Berninger of The National. He stands atop the bridge of a mighty vessel steered by the rhythm section of Adam Kilemore Gardens (bass) and Chris Christianson (drums), while Frank Pick’s soaring, haunting guitar sits in the Crow’s Nest navigating via the stars. But hey, don’t just take our word for it, this small cross-section of quotes speak for themselves:
‘Another masterpiece from Damn Vandals, the UK’s most exciting band today….The discovery of a perfect album – one that truly is all killer/no filler – is not an everyday occurrence, and it is not something to be taken lightly…‘Done For Desire’ is a perfect album.
No hyperbole. No bullsh*t….I’m done, too, with comparisons to other artists of the past, the present, or the future. This is Damn Vandals.’ Mass Movement
‘The must see new band….Damn Vandals have something that a great deal of bands seem to lack…and every track leaves the listener stunned and desperate for more….you’ll find a great deal to love about the contagious sounds of those Damn Vandals.’ Rhythm and Booze 10/10
‘Awesome proper rock!’ Chris Hawkins, BBC 6Music‘
Great track!’ Tom Robinson, BBC 6Music
‘Beautiful Mind would make even the biggest fan of Echo & The Bunnymen remove their warped vinyl of ‘Porcupine’ from their record player, as the Damn Vandals could be their new favourite band…tingles my taste-buds.’ Artrocker
‘Outstanding….Damn Vandals, are worthy of the hype. Roll on the album.’ Shout 4 Music
‘I’m marking my diary to make sure I get the album as soon as possible, it’s that infectious! If we gave marks out of 5 on the ‘One to Watch’ features – this would get 5. Definitely a band to watch out for!’ Guitar Café
‘Each track beautifully constructed, darkly melodic, salaciously sinister….Damn Vandals saturate senses, bewitch, true tale tellers weaving atmosphere, wreaking havoc as they go, with incredible musicianship and illuminating lyricism.’ Mudkiss
‘These Vandals are a more hip and dangerous younger brother of Echo and the Bunnymen, a younger brother who has gone out on the lash with The Jesus and Mary Chain.’ Beard Rock
‘Blimey what a corker of an EP it is ….Unabashed, ballsy and full of charisma, this is enough to whet the appetite but roll on the summer when the debut album lands. A barnstormer of an EP, showcasing a well and truly mind-blowing band.’ Room Thirteen
