Stubborn Heart selected as Rough Trade’s prestigious Album Of The Month

Stubborn Heart - aka Luca Santucci and Ben Fitzgerald - set ears buzzing last year with a (then unidentified) white label 12” on the Boiler Room website and followed it up earlier this summer with the ‘Need Someone’ EP (on Kaya Kaya records).

Now signed to One Little Indian, their full length eponymous debut, Stubborn Heart (out 5th November) reveals a stunning and surprisingly poignant electronic soul record. Hailing from London and Oxford respectively, the duo’s debut emotes heartbreak over broken beats and dark, atmospheric space. The clean, ghostly production coalesces with Luca’s mournful vocal to positively ooze a bruised melancholy.

Stubborn Heart has been selected as Rough Trade’s prestigious Album Of The Month for November, and the band debut live at the SWN Festival in Cardiff on 20th October and in London at the Rough Trade East store on the 5th November, followed by UK and European shows (see above).

Equally inspired by 80’s and 90’s electronic music and 60’s and 70’s soul music (the album includes a cover of Reuben Bell & The Casanovas rare soul 45 It’s Not That Easy), Stubborn Heart never lose their passion for good pop music – everything from Hall and Oates to Timbaland. Recent comparisons have been drawn with the XX, Sbtrkt, James Blake & Four Tet.

The band have already been afforded some great support from points as diverse as Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music/Radio 1), Benji B (BBC Radio1), Rob Da Bank (BBC Radio 1), The Boiler Room, Abeano, Ross Allen (Ministry of Sound), Lauren Laverne (BBC 6 Music), Seb Chew (Rinse FM), John Kennedy (XFM), Joe Goddard (Hot Chip/DFA), The Guardian (New Band Of The Day), Q Magazine (Track Of The Day).

The striking video for Need Someone is directed by photographer and filmmaker Elaine Constantine, and all cover art by Output’s Trevor Jackson.
