Garfangle and The Goods are a ‘pop-up band’ created by Liverpool musicians Garth Jones and Carl Kenneally. AKA The Nihilites, the pair have won a steady reputation for their intuitive soulful harmonies, inimitable reggae rhythms and infectious tunes, winning plaudits from and legend Geno Washington among many others.
The song took shape en route to Wales one Christmas to see family says Garth.
“I was sat at Shrewsbury station when the song just came to me. I got my guitar out of the case, started strumming away and out it came. I could barely feel my fingers, bloody freezing it was. Ironically it came out sounding Brazilian – not your typical Christmas song at all!
I played it to a family friend who said ‘it’s lovely dear – but what you need’s a nice big sing-along chorus’. I pulled one out the hat from somewhere and away we went.
I took it back to Liverpool, to my bandmate Carl Kenneally, whose incredible voice really put the silver lining on it. With a little bit of help from St Helens’ Sing Out Choir – and my dad on piano – we realised we had something very special on our hands
