firewheelbombfire release debut album Square Peg in a Square Hole
“Square Peg in a Square Hole” is the debut album by “firewheelbombfire”, a brand new experimental solo project from Cardiff-based producer Matt Strangis. Zero budget, 100% DIY, and conceived from a pro-album / anti-single perspective, it was written and home-recorded in the exact chronological order of its track-listing, in just under two months, around the 9-5.
Making minimal use of samples, it instead relies on home-made kit (cymbals / snares / percussion / guitar), borrowed instruments (piano / stylophone) and other noise-enabling bits and pieces found around the home (kitchen utensils / plates / cats).
The album is shaped by rock, electronic, stoner, ambient and metal influences, reflecting the fact that although Strangis has a hazy history of playing in variety of guitar-based bands, he also produces drum and bass as “Billy Gone Bad” - under this alias, he has received airplay from Huw Stephens (BBC Radio 1), Tom Robinson (BBC6), Adam Walton (BBC Radio Wales), Bethan Elfyn (BBC Radio Wales) and Annie Nightingale (BBC Radio 1), and has DJ-ed on bills featuring some of the most respected names in drum and bass (Congo Natty, Dillinja, Black Sun Empire, Dub Phizix, S.P.Y.)
