Meredith O'Connor releases single Just the Thing
Teenage singer-songwriter and actress Meredith O’Connor announces her new single “Just the Thing”, which will officially release on iTunes on April 22, 2014. 75% of proceeds from the single will go to two mothers fighting cancer: Cathy Marino, a 36-year-old single mother of a 7-year-old daughter and Diana Polanco, a mother and grandmother who takes care of both her daughter and granddaughter. Meaningful lyrics, a catchy melody, and a powerful message about not fitting in with the “popular crowd” are a consistent theme throughout Meredith’s songs. Co-written by legendary songwriter/producer Heather Holley, who has produced songs for the likes of Christina Aguilera, “Just the Thing” blends a bit of country and rock to create this edgy pop song.
Growing up in New York, Meredith was ostracized for her passions and for being herself, and now she uses her music to spread awareness about bullying. She does speaking engagements for groups of young people, sharing her music and her story, and encourages teens to be inclusive and tolerant of one another’s differences. She is a member of the It Gets Better Project, a well-known non-profit organization that supports LGBT youth, and is an official advisor for the Reach Out, a non-profit organization whose mission is to stop bullying in schools.
“‘Just the Thing’ is about how you should love yourself for who you are, and it’s okay to be different,” Meredith explains. “Standing out is a good thing that people will love at the end of the day.”
The proceeds from the single will be going to the Carol Galvin Foundation that is currently supporting two women battling cancer. Cathy Marino was diagnosed with lung and breast cancer and has had two heart surgeries just this past year. Diana Polanco takes care of her family in Florida while her husband works in New York trying to pay all the bills. Meredith came across these two women and was so touched by their stories that she decided to help by contributing a majority of the proceeds from her single sales. She was named spokesperson of The Carol Galvin Foundation in January of 2014 and performed at the foundation’s first fundraiser earlier this year in Nyack, NY and is slated to perform at their upcoming fundraiser on May 15th. "As a preteen, I modeled for runway fashion and print, which led me to meet my manager, Rick Galvin, the head of the Carol Galvin Foundation, at a charity event. The organization means so much to so many people, and I am more than happy to finally tie my music in with the foundation’s mission."
