Guitars and Other Machines at the The Capstone Theatre Liverpool

Guitars and Other Machines at the The Capstone Theatre Liverpool

Guitars and Other Machines at the The Capstone Theatre Liverpool

On Friday 21st February, The Capstone is delighted to present Guitars and Other Machines. This exciting collaboration sees our very own outstanding classical guitarist and composer Neil Campbell joined by acclaimed electric guitarist Carlo Bowry and electronic composer and producer Gordon Ross.

Audiences at this very special performance will not only experience solo sets, in which the performers use delays and loop machines to build intricate layered compositions, but also classical guitar collide with experimental electronica and progressive rock.

The evening is also set to include a new arrangement of Philip Glass's beautiful Metamorphosis and an innovative original version of Steve Reich's multiple guitar classic Electric Counterpoint performed on classical guitar alongside spectacular projected visuals.

So join us at The Capstone for a night of creative compositions, inventive configurations and tradition with a twist.

"Two of my favourite Minimalist pieces given a fresh perspective. Deviating from its piano origins with a distinctive blend of fluid fingerpicking and wistful electric swells, Campbell and Bowry's guitar-driven Metamorphosis is a seductively mournful version of a timeless and hypnotic piece. As for Acoustic Counterpoint, it stands comparison with Pat Metheny's defining execution of Reich's thrilling composition and that's a significant achievement in itself." Tim Bowness, No-Man/Burning Shed.

Neil Campbell is an outstanding guitarist whose originality of thought makes him far more than just another gifted purveyor of finger acrobatics.” Paul Fowles, Classical Guitar magazine.

Neil Campbell (Classical Guitar/Electronics) has been described by Classical Guitar Magazine as “an outstanding guitarist whose originality of thought makes him far more than just another gifted purveyor of finger acrobatics”. His recent work includes collaborations with Yes vocalist Jon Anderson, electronic musician DJ Yousef and Sense of Sound Singers.

Carlo Bowry (Electric Guitar/Electronics) has astonished audiences across Europe as the guitar ace for the Muffin Men and The Wizards of Twiddly, collaborating with Jimmy Carl Black (Mothers of Invention), Mike Keneally, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Ike Willis, Arthur Brown, Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra's 10:10 Ensemble and Canterbury music legend Kevin Ayers along the way. Carlo teaches guitar at The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) and Liverpool University.

Gordon Ross (Electronics/Production) has commissioned new work from Steve Reich, Sir John Taverner and James McMillan and worked with Ian McCulloch, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, MTV, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and many others as well as performing at festivals across the UK in recent years.

The Bulbs Light Up The Capstone With New Album Launch

On Friday 21st June the Capstone Theatre will play host to the brand new album launch of the new group Bulbs. Hailing from Liverpool, UK, Bulbs are Joey Zeb (drums), Andy Maslivec (bass), Neil Campbell (guitar) and Marty Snape (electronics).

The Bulbs launches its eagerly awaited debut album with an hour long performance (+ support) which will feature the projection of an entrancing new film specially created by artist Sonny Phillips to accompany the album.

Over a year in the making Bulbs new album ‘On’ is a 12 track tour-de-force of cyclical time signatures, electronic textures, dark conceptual speech samples and prog melodic-ism. The album will be performed in its entirety at the launch event.

Bulbs is both a musical concept and a real band which aims to marry adventurous music-making with information and sound samples chosen to challenge the audience to look around them at the world in which they are living. It aims to ‘switch on listeners like light bulbs’ to question conventional wisdom and corporate media propaganda.

As a virtuoso solo guitarist Neil Campbell expands the scope of his already densely textured compositions with various loops, delays and other electronic effects, making his classical guitar sound like a multi-timbral guitar orchestra. His various collaborations and his concept performance pieces such as ‘Ghost Stories: A Night Opera’, ‘Frankenstein’ with The Neil Campbell Collective and Sense of Sound Singers and ‘Inventioning’, a new composition being developing with Jon Anderson (Yes), have earned him a reputation for musical ambitiousness and innovation.

For Bulbs he has teamed up with Andy Maslivec, bass player from The Neil Campbell Collective, Joey Zeb, session percussionist and drummer with legendary underground Liverpool dub institution The Zeb and Marty Snape (The Mighty Zeb / The Hat Band).
Joey, a founder member of Zeb, has his roots in prog dub. He has sessioned on various reggae, rock, folk projects and met Neil during the highly respected N F I electronic improv sessions. He is currently playing with proggers Gorp and dub hop outfit The Corinthians.

"Wild and wonderful music"
Jon Anderson (Yes vocalist)

"Like Mike Oldfield before him, Neil Campbell is an outstanding guitarist whose originality of thought makes him far more than just another gifted purveyor of finger acrobatics."
Paul Fowles (Classical Guitar Magazine)
