Fyfe debuts new single Conversations
Fyfe will release a new single, ‘Conversations’, on July 8: the follow-up to his acclaimed debut EP, ‘Solace’, which amassed over half a million hits, and saw additional support from the likes of Huw Stephens, Rob Da Bank, Phil and Alice and XFM. Following a set at Bushstock on June 1, Fyfe plays his debut headline show at London’s Sebright Arms on June 18.
‘Conversations’ is the latest thrilling turn in the musical evolution of Paul Dixon. Still just 23-years-old, the former David’s Lyre songwriter conceived Fyfe as an expression of freedom: without a manager, a label or plugger, Dixon quietly sent ‘Solace’ out to blogs himself, offering only a photo of the back of his head by way of a biog. Virtually overnight, however, Fyfe had topped Hype Machine, and seen a blizzard of theories as to his true identity. And whilst he never intended Fyfe to be an anonymous artist, the pseudonym has offered Dixon an immediately stronger sense of identity, escape and style. In more ways than one, Fyfe is about having a greater sense of “who you are and what you want.”
Written, produced and mixed solely by Dixon, Fyfe’s debut EP, ‘Solace’, was both intimate and ambitious, matching intricate beats with glitchy electronics and soaring orchestration. Its brooding follow-up, ‘Conversations’, goes even further. Penned during a period of insomnia, the song explores the disconnect between reality and the relentless internal narrative of a sleepless night. It’s a multi-layered ode to dreams, and the aspirations of a character in search of a new direction (but unable to sleep). Sonically, Fyfe again takes several steps forward: ‘Conversations’ suggests a greater exploration in the beats that have obsessed Dixon since his childhood (specifically circa The Neptunes, Timbaland) as well as the delicate pop melodies of Bjork or The XX.
Older, wiser, but still the prodigal young talent, Fyfe is a journey in self-discovery from an artist who has picked himself up and come back stronger. Or as he sings on ‘Conversations’, “all this time I didn’t know just who I’m meant to be / come on dreams, don’t fail me now.”
