Newcastle singer/songwriter Mat Hunsley releases debut single Au Contraire
Mat Hunsley is one young man who – much like the rest of us – is on a journey to find his feet in the game of life. An acoustic singer/songwriter from Newcastle by way of Lincolnshire, his early demos were recorded from his student bedroom one snowy February morning – on a cheap but portable second-hand recorder. The raw, stripped-back songs he chronicled that day are reminiscent of the rustic, ethereal charms of Mat’s musical idols – the likes of Bon Iver, Ben Howard and James Vincent Mcmorrow.
The release of his debut single, ‘Au Contraire’, amassed further admirers to his folk-tinged sound and unique brand of storytelling, with the likes of The Line Of Best Fit, The 405, BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio lending their support to the first chapter in a colourful songbook that Mat is swiftly compiling. Now he is looking to the future, and to sharing his passionate and intelligent documentation of the world as it revolves around him with a wider audience.
The 20 year old possesses a unique ability to tell a story in a way that reaches out to the human being inside our worn and weathered 21st century skin. The troubled honesty of his lyricism; the immediacy of his emotive refrain; the poignancy of his delivery – these are the traits that have swiftly connected with a passionate following, and this outstanding young talent is starting to walk with a more confident stride.
