Washington D.C. band Voxx

MusicMafia presents Washington D.C. band Voxx

Voxx is a band consisting of two, Kris Køllins and Elias. We're both originally from the East Coast (Washington D.C.), and moved to Los Angeles just over a year ago to continue pursuing music.

Having known one another for over 10 years now, they decided to collaborate on an independent project together where they could be creatively free and showcase their spontaneity, and the energetic, crazy side of their strong friendship. Thus, "Voxx" was born in 2014.

Their debut single "Hum Dilly Dum" (released Jan. 20, 2015), was written and co-produced by themselves. -With core production and engineering from Aalias, producer of the hit single "The Monster", by Eminem feat. Rihanna. With great commercial appeal, this song features a hard-hitting drum mix with a full line of horns and synths, accompanied by catchy unique phrasing in the song's hook to make for something you'll be SURE to have on repeat in your cars and on your radios.

The Voxx brand is unique, edgy, and fresh. With a blend of RandB, Pop, and Hip Hop, the sound is reminiscent of a new age OutKast, Black Eyed Peas, or Missy Elliot, with generous amounts of visual and sonic appeal. Following in the afforementioned's footsteps, the Voxx vision is to bring that brand of flamboyant, quirky, risque' behavior to the Urban Pop community. It's their ultimate goal to use our eccentric sound and look, to push boundaries, both sonically and visually.

Liverpool newbies Waster Release Debut Single and Video For Graveyard Shift

Liverpool Waster Debut Single Video Graveyard Shift

Liverpool newbies Waster Release Debut Single and Video For Graveyard Shift

“When we started the band we were all in a situation of waking up every morning, going to work, coming home and going to sleep,” recalls Sammy Clifford, vocalist with Liverpudlian newcomers Waster, recalling the origins of his band’s blunt moniker; “It felt like we were just wasted space and not really doing much with our lives other than working. To be honest, that situation hasn’t really changed other than now we’re really broke due to band commitments, which is where the EP name, ‘SKRWD’, came from. But, this band has given us all something to do, and to be proud of; like, we aren’t prepared to just settle for a boring, generic lifestyle anymore and we’ve decided to do something about it.”

A creative outlet born from lack of options, a cathartic escape from the norm… these tropes lie at the heart of many a band’s origin story, but few fresh faced acts come out of the blocks as accomplished as Waster.

Completed by guitarists Danny Swift and Kieren Alder, drummer Kieran McVeigh and bassist Alex Tobijanski, Waster grew up on “the ‘original’ mainstream pop punk bands, like Blink, New Found Glory and Sum 41,” and the quintet make no bones about being the product of their influences. “I think our music reflects the music we love, yet it’s got an edge to it that doesn’t distance itself from what the genre has evolved into today,” opines Sammy; “It’s a good blend of the bands that drew us to playing instruments in the first place and the bands we listen to on a daily basis today. We're fully prepared for the onslaught of comparisons that will no doubt be thrown our way, but honestly we just make music that sounds good to us, and that’s all we care about. If people dig it, sick! If they don’t, that’s totally cool!”

Produced and recorded by Seb Barlow at Celestial Recordings (Neck Deep, Homebound, ROAM), Waster’s debut E.P ‘SKRWD’ is a full force introduction to the band’s keen ear for instantly familiar hooks and head bobbing grooves, showcasing more savvy and swagger than many bands with ten times their experience. But whilst their music might be serious, the members are far from, as their tongue-in-cheek music video for lead single ‘Graveyard’ might suggest. “Remember at school everyone was split into ‘sets’? And there’s a set that all the class clowns get thrown into... imagine they formed a band - that’s us!” laughs Sammy; “We like to act (and dress) up a lot, and don’t take ourselves too seriously at all. We want to be different, and want to stand out by showing that. For example you will never see a boring video from us; we will just not allow that to happen, and we can make that promise from day one. And something we feel everyone should also know is that everything we wore in the ‘Graveyard Shift’ video is genuine attire. We wear that shit on a daily basis, corpse paint and everything.”

MusicMafia presents Soul/Blues Singer Songwriter Eddy Smith

Having his debut single “Temptation” released and awarded single of the week by UK Undiscovered Radio, and then having his band invited to BBC Studios in Brighton to play the BBC Introducing Live sessions, it’s safe to say that 2014 was a mad year for the Eddy Smith Band. As a multi-instrumentalist Eddy writes, arranges and produces his music along with his hugely talented band.

Contradictory to the “laid back” feel of his debut album Easy Times, released in October 2013, Temptation is a groovy blend of Pop, Blues and Soul. He lists his influences as artists such as John Mayer, Amos Lee, Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles to name just a few. The song was picked up by radio DJ’s all over the UK, Including Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands.

In 2012 his talents were recognised by the judges of ‘The MBF Awards Song writing Competition’ who saw Eddy reach the finals that had entrants from every university in the UK. Since this landmark event in Eddy’s career, he has gone on to perform at several prestigious venues around London and the Southeast, including The Hideaway Jazz Club, The Bedford, The Islington o2 Academy and played a live radio session on BBC Introducing.
He was also invited as a support act for “Yellowire” on their London tour.

With the release of Temptation, Eddy is looking forward to the forthcoming years, striving to be the musician he’s always wanted to be, doing what he loves, and loving what he does!

BAFTA Award Winning Filmmaker Creates Powerful Promo with Daisy and The Dark

BAFTA Award Winning Filmmaker Creates Powerful Promo with Daisy and The Dark

BAFTA Award winning filmmaker Shreepali Patel and top cinematographer Tim Sidell (FKA Twigs, Alt-J) have teamed up with classical chart topper Daisy and The Dark to create an evocative video for her haunting debut single ‘Waltzing’.

Daisy and the Dark is an ‘invitation into a magical world’ - the creation of singer-songwriter-visual artist, Sarah Kayte Foster, who spent Christmas 2013 in the UK Classical Charts Top 10 with the Mediaeval Baebes before going solo:

“Shreepali and I began planning the Waltzing video straight after I’d filmed a live singing session with my former band. The session was for a newspaper known for their questionable portrayal of women and I turned up to our meeting still shuddering at one of the camera men telling me to ‘Look down the lens and imagine all the men watching’. This sparked off a discussion about the portrayal of women in music videos – and the challenge of creating something that’s deeply sensual, without being sexual - where the line between one ends and another begins, and how clearly that line can ever be drawn.”

This theme is apparent in the dark dream-like video, the camera deftly tracing two bodies in close-up as cinematic light projections crawl under their skin.  Tenderness and violence, intimacy and distance; we are subtly invited into the emotion of the song.

“We agreed that rooting everything in the story was paramount.  No 'skin just for skin’s sake'. We talked about the sensuality and claustrophobia in the lyrics of the song – which is about an experience in my early twenties - about how two people can end up stretching too far to connect over a long distance, be that geographical or emotional - and how violently vulnerable that feels.”

Director Shreepali adds: ‘I wove the story of Sarah’s song - and our interrogation into the relationship between music and gender politics - into my approach to filming. I was keen to explore projections and their mnemonic quality, particularly on the body, and this led to creating a shoot lit entirely by projections - minimalist, intimate and intense.’

Conjuring echoes of the Cocteau Twins and Kate Bush, this is a beautifully atmospheric piece - and with another video already up their sleeve, this creative collaboration is definitely one to watch.

Liverpool's The Little Secrets Release Debut Single All I Need

Liverpool’s The Little Secrets are Kevin Dixon and Stacy Jo.  Formed in 2010 after meeting at The Cavern, Stacy was singing with another band when Kevin spotted her and decided to ‘steal’ her for his new project.  After two years of writing together and experimenting with different line-ups and sounds, the pair hit on their infectious slice of pop, echoing the likes of Camera Obscura and BMX Bandits.

“We asked ourselves what kind of songs would we like to hear and set about writing them” Kevin explains. “The songs are written as a true partnership, both musically and lyrically. The initial idea can start from either one of us and is then crafted further towards the sound we are trying to create, infusing as many of our influences as possible.”

Debut single ‘All I Need’, released on Edge Hill University’s The Label Recordings, has already received airplay on BBC Radio 2 from Janice Long who selected it as one of her ‘Janice Loves’ tracks, and can best be described as having sunshine poured into your ears!

Liverpool band The Baltic States finish debut E.P. Boxes

Liverpool The Baltic States debut E.P. Boxes

Liverpool band The Baltic States finish debut E.P. Boxes

The Baltic States is a five piece indie band based in Liverpool, UK. It blends techno and haunting electronica with hypnotic, soaring vocal melodies in order to create a uniquely powerful sound. In summer 2013, the founder members of the band, Jev Maligins and Helen Morrisson, released their debut demo single, ‘Kontrol’, which was extremely well-received by both radio and social media platforms. 'Kontrol' was named as track of the week by "Best of British Unsigned" and received wide airplay across the UK which included being featured on BBC Radio 6 by Tom Robinson.

The success of the single was complemented by the popularity of the promotional video which was uploaded to YouTube and which quickly accrued over 80,000 views. The video was filmed and edited by Helen and Jev.

Shortly after the equally successful release of their second single, ‘The Fire’, Helen and Jev were invited to perform an acoustic set for BBC Radio Mersey (the only acoustic set the band has ever performed).

With the more recent addition of drummers, Slay Janens and Vadim Sidorovs, and bassist, Laura Shea, the band performed their first live sets. So far, there have only been three such gigs but two of the venues that TBS have played include the famous 100 Club, London, in which they performed in the final of a national contest organised by Living Indie TV, and the even more prestigious Cavern Club where they performed at the request of BBC Radio Merseyside DJ, Dave Monks.

Currently, the band have locked themselves in a studio in order to record new material for future releases and live performances. The band will self-release their debut E.P. on 18 of October 2014.

Nina Baker wins Best Unsigned Song 2014 at music awards

Nina Baker wins Best Unsigned Song 2014 at music awards

Singer-Songwriter Nina Baker has beaten thousands of other musicians to see her debut song ‘Single Bed’ crowned Best Unsigned Song 2014.

Nina was nominated in the category alongside nine other UK based musicians but won convincingly with over 30% of the total vote.

Nina, the classical-trained pianist said "What a way to end the year! I have played huge festivals for the first time, my debut album ‘Quite Frankly’ has received great reviews worldwide and now to receive this prestigious award – It just caps an amazing 2014 and will give me a massive springboard into 2015” She added “When you write these songs in a bedroom, you do not think that they will have such wide-reaching appeal. I write what feels right to me, compositions that draw on my classical training and lyrics that express lessons that I have learned in life. If this music engages with people and invokes emotion, a laugh, a tear, a smile, then that is the greatest praise that you can offer me”

Nina’s following has grown significantly in 2014 and she has gained friends in influential places, such as Mark Morriss, frontman of the Bluetones, who couldn’t resist having his say casting his vote for the eventual winner.

The awards, hosted by Best of British Unsigned, saw over 11,000 people vote for their favorite acts across four categories. Best of British Unsigned founder Matt Graveling said: “I believe the overwhelming number of votes cast this year just shows just how bored people are with being spoon fed the same old mass produced music.

Nina is a great example of an artist, still untouched by the curse of reality TV, who is making, fresh, honest music in the way that she wants to”.

Jake Morley to release new single Falter and announces UK tour

Jake Morley new single Falter UK tour

Jake Morley new single Falter UK tour

Following the release of his 2012 debut album, London-based artist Jake Morley spent two years gigging relentlessly up, down and across the UK, establishing a strong grass roots following.  Morley's personal songs, captivating live presence and ground-breaking guitar style brought festival slots at The Isle of Wight, Latitude, Secret Garden Party, a sell out headliner at HMV’s Next Big Thing Festival, plus enthusiastic support from key Radio 2 and 6Music shows and glowing press reviews.

This wealth of live experience fed into an intense soul-searching writing period at the start of 2014. He finally returned to the studio this summer, unveiling a startling new weight and depth to his music. Bolder and more mature themes like adulthood and intense self-reflection shine through the new songs.  Helping carve out this detailed new approach on first single Falter is award-winning producer Calum MacColl.

Falter is a track that doesn’t depend on gimmicks, kitsch or any shock factor as it does on its near-perfect construction of a great song. The production is a mixture of Gotye’s creativity and  Ed Sheeran’s mass-appeal. Quirky nods to acoustic pop and an unconventional guitar technique show off his imaginative song-writing and arrangement abilities.

"It's the sound," Morley says, "of everything crashing to a halt." Falter proves that his career threatens to do the reverse, and is an act worth watching. The single will be available for sale and download on 27th October 2014.

Liverpool Polar States Evac

Liverpool band Polar States to play Evac

When a new band suddenly pops out of seemingly nowhere and has already supported full UK tours with the likes of The Rifles and have played shows with Reverend and the Makers and Circa Waves, you could be forgiven for assuming they were being forced on an unsuspecting public.

Polar States are a band who in the space of 6 short months have churned out a stadium worthy set from the confines of a Toxteth council flat.

Impressing and consequently working with a Grammy Award winning producer the lads have songs as varied as the emotions they are charged with, as the band wax lyrical about the ‘Roads We Used To Use’, ‘Dark Corners’ and everything in between.

The debut single, Concrete, released Monday 6th October, is 2 mins 51 seconds of raw ‘pushing back at the tides’ which take us all down to the cold concrete many people call home.

Paul, Josh, Phill and Mark are four everyday lads who are anything but when it comes to making music. Polar States is a shared dream, a way of propelling themselves from ordinary Northern life; glorifying it along the way.

SHOWS: SEPT 11 - AAA, HIGH ST KENSINGTON, LONDON

BullyBones release debut single I Feel Sorry For You

BullyBones debut single I Feel Sorry For You

BullyBones release debut single I Feel Sorry For You

Released: October 27th 2014
Label: Barnstormer

Name your band after a song by The Birthday Party and you damn well better have some fire in your guts to back it up. BullyBones have that – and some decidedly catchy melodies to complement their evident-enough energy, a little sweetness to offset the sour sweat that soaks so compellingly through their tracks to date.

And for the less punk-inclined listeners out there: sure, a bully bone can also mean a dog chew ‘treat’ made up of a shrivelled bull’s penis. But really, come on. You’re beyond that, aren’t you? So, onwards with the music, shall we?

Which draws its cues from record collections spanning several decades. Having first come together as school friends before realising their band ambitions, the members of BullyBones – today comprising Charlie Pullinger on vocals and guitar; Aaron Lee on guitar; Illy Webster on bass; and Elliot Little on drums – “got serious” in 2012, and haven’t looked back since.

In their own words, the band’s influences span “60 years and several continents”, but there’s an unmistakable British resonance to the tracks that make up their initial missive to the wider world. It’s not exactly small-town boys fighting out into the bigger picture, more the declaration of immediate, easy opportunities extinguished, a local circuit already won – and now’s the time to carry their fervour across to that next, giant step.

Which the double-header of ‘I Feel Sorry For You’ and ‘Deadflower Girl’ certainly feels like: from diminutive beginnings into bold introductions. These are songs that crackle and spark with live commitment, with enthusiasm for more – not of the same, not to recycle influences into a commendable ‘authentic’ sound, or anything like that, but to further bonds and deepen friendships. You know when you hear a band for the first time and they sound like they mean it – and that’s what’s here. Vitriol, certainly, but tempered by an already established pop sensibility, where messages aren’t carried on affronts but by accessibility.

You might catch traces of garage-rockers past in the shadows dancing about the snarls, or sniff out the scent of The Stones when they could move without risking hip replacement surgery. You might, because these bands carried comparable qualities: allies in alignment, aiming at something more than what’s previously been afforded them. Birthday, Christmas, piss-up for no particular reason: whatever the occasion, BullyBones have come to party, and only a bleedin’ idiot would doubt their potential.

Moksha Medicine to release debut single Spindle Thief

Moksha Medicine debut single Spindle Thief

Moksha Medicine to release debut single Spindle Thief

Taking their name from Aldous Huxley's writings on visionary experiences, Moksha Medicine may just be one of London's most exciting new acts right now. With influences coming from a sprawling range of genres such as psychadelia, surf-punk and drone, the band have built up a wild reputation for their enigmatic and chaotic live shows, making them firm favourites of legendary left-of-centre promoters Bad Vibrations.

After releasing their debut EP 'Moksha' in early January, Moksha Medicine are now set to release their first official single 'Spindle Thief' on September 15th. Describing their sound as “Spacemen 3 injected with Grace Slick and Omar Khorshid”, 'Spindle Thief' begins with an Eastern style riff, before launching into an adrenaline-fuelled wall of sound complimented by bass lines reminiscent of Kim Deal-era Pixies.

One of the most refreshingly different tracks of the year, 'Spindle Thief' serves as a perfect introduction to a band primed to break out of the underground. The new single will be released on September 15th 2014, with a single launch show at the Shacklewell Arms on September 10th.

LIVE DATES
Sept 10 - LONDON - Shacklewell Arms (single launch show)
Sept 29 - LONDON - Shacklewell Arms (w/ Dark Horses)

MusicMafia presents Norwegian group The Well

Norway The Well

MusicMafia presents Norwegian group The Well

Siblings always have a special bond; it’s a kind of sixth sense, something that provides that something that nothing else can. When you meet siblings, cousins, you always are driven by the intrigue of the similarities but also the differences.  For six Norwegian guys in their late teens, oscillating around one familial spine, a labour of passion and instinct has formed something very special.

Norway is evocative. Musically, culturally, there is a sense of difference.  The Well are without a doubt special. When you meet them there is that warm sense of familiarity. When you hear their music you can imagine it filling both the biggest arenas and the most intimate of club spaces. You almost have to stop and ask yourself, why you don’t know about them already?

The Well are TJ (drums), Andrew (bass), Chris (guitars), Olly (keys), Stan (guitars), led by Freddy (lead singer).  Born and raised on the west coast of Norway just outside the buzzing city of Bergen, as much as The Well’s story begins now it began a decade ago.

Influenced by both music from the past and the present, from Arcade Fire and Haim to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, their bond formed early, growing up together and going to the same school.

The seed of an idea led to the guys forming a band with little experience of playing instruments. Fast forward 2006 and the guys started their first gigs around Norway and then in 2012 were spotted by seasoned Norwegian music manager, Geir Luedy, of MADE, one of Scandinavia’s leading music management agencies.

Seeing the raw potential, Geir guided and let the band grow within – the result, epic pop – authentic, true, with the potential to have that seismic moment as AHA did three decades ago. Confident but vulnerable, this is a band that dreams big.

Their first single, Separate Ways, is a bold confessional story of heartbreak.  Big, emotive and heart warming. It’s everything The Well are about.

Separate Ways is released on October 20th on indie label Conflict Of Interest.

MusicMafia presents London based Singer-Songwriter Andy Roberts

MusicMafia Singer-Songwriter Andy Roberts

MusicMafia presents London based Singer-Songwriter Andy Roberts

Andy Roberts aims to excite, thrill and challenge. Writing with melodic grandeur, he crafts songs that are uplifting, inspiring and humanising.

Having grown up obsessing over 90’s Britpop and Alternative, he spent years hidden away in his bedroom fine tuning his abilities before finding other musicians to collaborate with. They toured the country and then he decided that with his innate sense of direction and ambition, it was time to take the bold step and go solo.

Having played a selection of shows as stripped back acoustic renditions, he gave a uniquely intimate and personal performance. He then released his debut EP, having produced and played the majority of the instrumentation on it himself, this demonstrating his full creative scope and potential. He hopes to make his sound fully realised with a backing band in the near future, along with plans to promote his new singles and gain national exposure.

He has recently released his debut single "Tremors" which you can have a listen to below

The Incredible Magpie Band release Debut double A-side single

The Incredible Magpie Band Debut double A-side single

The Incredible Magpie Band release Debut double A-side single

The Incredible Magpie Band, a majestically rocking and rolling Wakefield five piece, have a fondness for all things shiny and beautiful.

Whilst there’s a proud boasting of 60s R’n’B and a splattering of Scouse heroes The Las, you are mere seconds into a Magpie track before any attempts at pigeonholing ends and hair standing up on skin begins.

Debut double A-side single ‘This Chose Me’ / ‘Money’, released 15th September, has had a sprinkling of the magic dust from Zak Starkey (The Who/Oasis) who remixed and produced the record.

Written by bassist Lou Taylor, ‘This Chose Me’, is a near-perfect synthesis of scouse skiffle, early American rock'n'roll, and British Invasion sounds whilst ‘Money’, written by guitarist Lee Knowles, is stomping 60s pop-soul meets rhythm and blues – an unashamed rally to the working classes.

The Magpie’s have a habit for writing the perfect pop nugget. The songs are delivered with an aesthetic sensibility that is at once magical and uplifiting and completely accessible to anyone with an interest in well-written, -played, -produced, and -sung pop.

In their short time together (the band formed in 2012) The Magpies have created an alchemic freshness that revives the tired senses, like a slug of cold cider on a hot summer’s afternoon.

“We wanted to wear our influences on our sleeves and that’s what comes out in the music, we hope. If someone plays something that sounds like a band we like we don’t all stand around sucking our teeth going “you can’t play that, it’s too much like…” we go “yeah!! That’s great!! Leave it in!!”

The band’s shimmering debut album, due for release later this year, lends itself to the bubblegum pop era of bands like The Monkees and ‘Fifth Dimension’ era Byrds, with a nod to more recent artists including The Coral and Jake Bugg. Although at once a relic of the past in terms of its sonic simplicity, in 2014 terms, utterly unique for a pop record.

With only a handful of live shows behind them and a Liam Gallagher endorsement to boot, The Incredible Magpie Band look set to shine in 2014.

The Incredible Magpie Band is: Lee Knowles (vox / guitar), Lou Taylor (bass / vox), Ben Hardcastle (lead guitar / vox), Matty Davey (guitar), Ewok Layton (drums / percussion).

Deux Furieuses, Mourning Birds, Dana Jade at the Alleycat London

Minimal line up, maximum impact, deux furieuses are the epitome of politicised and impassioned guitar n drums fury. Debut single release a month after this show is already getting amazing feedback and cool music guru radio airplay. "The newest and best post punk duo in London" (Artrocker)

Mourning Birds new young Kent trio who have just signed a record deal in Japan and are recording their debut album in August. “British balls-out garage-rock that picks you up, slams you over its knee, slaps your arse red and makes you run for it" (NME) @mourningbirds

Dana Jade - think Grace Jones in a bar room brawl with Polly Jean Harvey, egged on by riot grrrls and delivered with a post punk slap to the face. “Attitudinal, bluesy punk ‘n’ roll” (Time Out) from the Clit Rock instigator. @Dana_Jade

Dizzy Spell - ArtBeat activist, musician, writer and a director of Enola Productions – beyond theatre to re-evolutionary art adventures.  @TheatreEnola
