UNDERCOVER FESTIVAL 3 DAY PACKED MULTI GENRE FESTIVAL OF Punk / Ska / Dub / Reggae / Post Punk

The thing about this festival more than any other in our opinion is a melting pot of the genres, crew, the bands, the venue but last and not least the varied / fun nature of those there that made this a festival that we firmly believe no other promoter will be able to re-create.

For 2015 we are sticking with the 2 stages as the synergy between both stages was excellent.

Please note: For the avoidance of any doubt The Undercover Festival is not an open air festival - the festival will be held in 2 rooms plus other areas at the Bisley Pavilion nr Woking Surrey – undercover by nature of the music policy of this festival and undercover - well because it is....

Undercover Festival 2014 - Completing Friday nights Headline line up

Undercover Festival 2014 - Completing Friday nights Headline line up

Undercover Festival 2014 - Completing Friday nights Headline line up

We are pleased to announce GENTLEMENS DUB CLUB to headline the Main Stage on the Friday for Undercover Festival 2014

Anyone who saw DREADZONE @ 2013 and liked them will absolutely love these guys

Think Dreadzone but younger with a twist?

Gentleman’s Dub Club is a nine-piece band that formed in Leeds in early 2006. With a style based in dub, ska and roots reggae, GDC have burst onto the UK circuit, rocking gigs and festivals up and down the country with their super high energy show. Combining tight grooves and a heavyweight sound, Gentleman’s Dub Club bring the party to crowds of all ages hungry for a dance floor workout, with their gigs often ending in a frenzied mosh pit reminiscent of a mid 80’s ska night. Live effects and mixing make for a crystal clear sound, and the band’s larger than life stage presence makes for a mesmerising experience.

Having built a reputation on consistently delivering one of the most energetic and exhilarating live shows to emerge from the UK music scene, the Gents’ antics have seen them astound crowds from Goa to Glastonbury, Boomtown, Bestival, V Fest, Secret Garden Party and Poland’s Ostroda Reggae Festival, not to mention the biggest bass-music’ festival in the world - Croatia’s Outlook Festival.

Their records remain securely within the top 40 of the album reggae charts since release, hailing support from some of the UK's most prominent underground representatives including Huw Stephens (BBC Radio 1), Rob Da Bank (BBC Radio 1), David Rodigan (BBC 1XTRA ) and Don Letts (BBC Radio 6 music).

Gentleman's Dub Club have supported a number of established artists such as Roots Manuva, The Streets, The Wailers, Busy Signal, U-Roy, and Finlay Quaye.

It’s going to be another lively Friday night at Undercover!!  SEE YOU DOWN THE FRONT!!

SPIZZENERGI

We are pleased to be able to welcome Spizz and the band to Undercover to close Stage II on the Friday!! AND boy are you in for a treat..

Spizzenergi formed in the late 1970s, led by Spizz.  The band changed its name every year, subsequent names including Athletico Spizz 80, Spizzoil and The Spizzles. They are notable as the first band to top the newly created UK Indie Chart early in 1980. However, they were perhaps best known for their single "Where's Captain Kirk?" More than two decades after its release, it was included in Mojo magazine's list of the best punk rock singles of all time.

2014 marks the 35th anniversary since those heady days where Spizz formed the band, yes there have been numerous changes to the band but what has not changed is the show you will witness at Undercover one that is relentless, pure theatre  and great fun.

One of the best showmen on the scene today..

That’s it for the headline and main bands for Undercover 2014s line up announcements...

We have made every effort to keep the buzz that was special in 2013 and make this festival that bit different.

Please note: For the avoidance of any doubt The Undercover Festival is not an open air festival - the festival will be held in 2 rooms plus other areas at the Bisley Pavilion nr Woking Surrey -  undercover by nature of the music policy of this festival and undercover - well because it is....

The Undercover Festival announces Saturday Line up

The Undercover Festival announces Saturday Line up

The Undercover Festival announces Saturday Line up

After a year of silence the Angelic Upstarts came back with a bang in October 2013.

The Angelic Upstarts were one of the first UK punk bands that really dealt with specific working class issues in depth, rather than just on a generic level. A band that never had the recognition they truly deserved.

Formed on a South Shields council estate in 1977, the Upstarts soon attracted notoriety due to their aggressive music and uncompromising attitude. Their debut single "The Murder Of Liddle Towers" was self-released in 1978 and then picked up by Rough Trade and went on to sell many thousands of copies. It told the story of a boxing coach who was killed while in police custody and is one of the most incendiary punk 45s ever released. Even today it sounds incredible, dripping with anger, and its less than polished production being perfect. The B-side "Police Oppression" was also a brilliant track and apparently singer "Mensi" still gets harrassed from the police who have never forgiven him for these tunes.

After many tracks that sum up so much of peoples early years they are as uncompromising as ever.

30 or so years on although Mensi is the only surviving member of the band. It is easy to be sceptical about the changing line-ups of classic bands so many years later but the guys playing as the Upstarts right now are a tough, sturdy unit. The dual guitars of Dickie Hammond (from Leatherface) and Neil Newton work together beautifully; former Red London member Gaz Stoker is solid on bass; and young Jonnie Halling from Crashed Out is beat-perfect.

Have the Upstarts mellowed with the passing of the years ?

Have they ####!!!!on the drum kit. Their set in Leeds was as tough as could be expected with pretty much all of their classics given an airing. The sauna-like conditions in the venue were hard to bear though!

SPEAR OF DESTINY

Established in 1983 by singer and songwriter Kirk Brandon. bassist Stan Stammers, Lascelles James on saxophone and Chris Bell on drums to form Destiny after the demise of Theatre Of Hate . It has had an ever-changing line-up through the years.  2013 was a busy year for Spear Of Destiny fronted by Kirk Brandon celebrating a 30 year anniversary tour.

Spear Of Destiny, released a series of fine albums in ‘Grapes Of Wrath’, ‘One Eyed Jacks’ and ‘World Service’.  ‘One Eyed Jacks’ is considered a classic by many.

Spear Of Destiny's live shows were widely considered to be second to none and they had a large cult following.

Theatre Of Hate have also reformed who Kirk Brandon still tours with but it is Spear of Destiny that we welcome to the main stage at Undercover Festival.

PENETRATION

Penetration are an original 1976 punk band from the North East.

Penetration formed in 1976 when four friends decided to form a band in reaction to the burgeoning Punk movement in Britain and America including Pauline Murray, Robert Blamire Gary Smallman who are still in the band today.

They are still playing today. Their debut single, "Don’t Dictate", is now acknowledged as a classic punk rock single and their debut album, Moving Targets (1978), is still widely admired...

Then there was nothing... until 2000, when a CD appeared of Roky Erickson covers entitled "Hallowe'en 2000". Pauline and Robert were back. Then suddenly, so were Penetration. Getting together again with Gary Smallman, the three original members began to play the songs, joined by guitarists Paul Harvey and Steve Wallace. What began as simple enjoyment somehow turned into the real deal.

Penetration are back and they are playing Undercover 2014.

Along with The Angelic Upstarts Spear Of Destiny and Penetration plus the already announced TMTCH we are pleased to announce a cracking Saturday line up of 21 bands including

999 - Back at Undercover after a well received show in 2013.

Surrey after a very successful headlining show on the Vive Le Rock stage @ GuilFest 2011

999 have boon going for over 30 plus years; the reason for their longevity is not airplay, massive publicity, hype or even a major recording deal but word of mouth and that “word of mouth” now extends to nearly every country on earth.

999 were first conceived in late 1976 when Nick Cash (vocals/guitar) and Guy Days (vocals/lead guitar), who were at school together, decided to form a group. Within a couple of months they had teamed up with Jon Watson (bass) and Pablo Labritain (drums) and 999 were officially born.

To date the band have completed countless U.S. tours, London gigs, UK / European tours visiting Finland, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Belgium, Holland, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Yugoslavia, Japan, Argentina and Brazil.

Stone Foundation

Also back by popular demand after playing Undercover 2013 and the Vive Le Rock stage @ GuilFest in 2011 and 2012

Stone Foundation are a group of seven like minded individuals that team together to make an exciting blend of Soul and Jazz influenced music. Based in the unlikely setting of rural Warwickshire, holed up their own studio creating a sensational and dynamic soulful sound that is capturing the hearts and minds of live audiences and influential movers and shakers alike.

Stone Foundation were personally invited to perform on the tour at The Specials request playing venues such as Alexandra palace, Glasgow SECC and the Ricoh Arena to thousands which certainly helped bring the group’s name and music to a wider appreciative audience.

Stone Foundation’s songs have already been used in several US TV hit drama’s such as “Franklin and Bash”, “The Finder”, “Made in Jersey” and “Wilfred” once again bringing their music to the masses.

Department S

The story of Department S begins in the origins of the post punk and mod scenes, which, although miles apart style- and music-wise, shared a common belief in the rejection of the darkness and apathy that punk had fallen into. Time to move on, time to get sharp.

In the late 70s A group of friends, who were regular gig goers, decided (over a few beers too many!) to form a band of their own. The name for the band was to be Guns For Hire. All they needed now was some musical instruments and the ability to start playing them.

After a change in personnel and a name change Department S arrived and released cracking tunes such as "Is Vic There?"  and  "Going Left-Right" to name but a few, a stint with Stiff records and the rest is history but one thing that can’t be denied is that they are back and as good as ever

Summer 2013 saw Department S play Glastonbury on the Sunday and a string of successful shows and we are pleased to be able to welcome them to Undercover Festival 2014.

The Talks

Dub Ska rockers from Yorkshire;

In a short space of time the band have been building themselves a live reputation around the UK and Europe for delivering a bouncing, sweaty shows supporting the likes of The Specials, Rancid, The Beat, King Blues, Random Hand, The Toasters and many more.

“There aren't many bands that are good enough to catch the attention of members of The Specials, but then there aren't many bands like The Talks. Proving that hard work, persistence and a pocket full of irresistibly catchy tunes can pay - dividends” -  Music Radar

The Dualers are Britain’s much loved Ska and Reggae band from the South of England who have steadily built up a following of many thousands of truly dedicated fans across all ages and have sold out at the Indigo O2 a record breaking 4 times within 18 months.

In October 2004 The Dualers launched themselves, unannounced, into the UK Singles Chart, landing at an impressive number 21 with self-penned song, Kiss on the Lips. As an unknown act, they became the first street performers ever to achieve a chart position, selling more records that week than some internationally well-known artists. With no backing or publicity, the key to this success was The Dualers’ ever-growing, increasingly dedicated fan-base.

Growing up in South London with parents Bill and Jackie Cranstoun, Tyber’s musical taste was heavily influenced by the music played at home. Playing at several locations in and around London in the sixties with his Savoy Sound System, Bill helped to introduce ska music to the capital.

The third chart single in 2006 “Don’t Go” was followed by release of their debut album ‘The Melting Pot’ and helped establish The Dualers as one of the most respected names on the UK Ska and Reggae scene. Q Magazine said “The Dualers soulful harmonising has admirable echoes of Bob Marley and Sam Cooke” and The Independent wrote “These local superstars are inching towards fame”. The second album ‘The Cooking Pot’ also sold out its first pressing within a month.

Along with the Dualers we are pleased to announce a cracking Sunday line up including

The Glitter Band  - The Glitter Band were the musicians who backed Gary Glitter on his hit records under the direction of the late great Mike Leander, and then went on to have a string of international Top 10 hits in their own right, including Angel Face, Goodbye My Love and Let's Get Together Again.

After many years living under the cloud of Gary Glitter's spectacular fall from grace, The Glitter Band are striking out and taking back the songs they performed on and that were the soundtrack to an entire generation.

Those songs will NOT be allowed to disappear into the mists of time because of the actions of one selfish individual. SHOUT IT LOUD AND SHOUT IT PROUD, HEYYYY! Back at Undercover by popular demand after a very successful show at Undercover 2013, The Glitter Band had a string of international Top 10 hits in their own right, including Angel Face, Goodbye My Love and Let's Get Together Again.

The Glitter Band are striking out and taking back the songs they performed on and that were the soundtrack to an entire generation.

In the words of the band “Those songs will NOT be allowed to disappear into the mists of time because of the actions of one selfish individual. SHOUT IT LOUD AND SHOUT IT PROUD, HEYYYY!”.

The current Glitter Band line up of Pete Phipps, John Springate, Eddy Spence, Dominic Rodgers, Marc Pearson have been striking out with an unashamed, accurate and powerful ‘Glitter’ presentation, reminding us of the value that the songs have for us and that the Glitter Band stand out as probably the most creative and talented of the bands from the Glam rock era. With more live shows coming your way …..”Rock On!”

XSLF – (X Stiff Little Fingers) Reuniting Henry Cluney with Jim Reilly after 30 or more years. They played on all the classic Stiff Little Fingers albums, the ones people really want to hear. This is the Belfast band — presenting an evening of all the favourites plus a few surprises. Henry says, “I was in numerous versions of the band, but all were a pale shadow of the real thing.” This is as close to the real thing since 1981! And on bass is Petesy Burns...another Burns! He is known for his work with the Outcasts and appeared in the movie Good Vibrations as Pugwash.

Fingers fans the cards are split evenly, Henry and Jim have XSLF so this band is as much SLF as the SLF, And those that have seen XSLF recently have witnessed and enjoyed XSLF knocking out a set of material from the first 2 albums and just touching on Go for it. many tracks SLF abandoned long ago.

Don’t miss XSLF — the nearest thing to Stiff Little Fingers around!

Goldblade – a band who many believed stole the show at GuilFest 2012 when they played a storming set to a packed VLR stage; Still fighting the punk rock war, GOLDBLADE were formed in 1996 by ex-Membranes front man John Robb. Goldblade have taken their firebrand rock n roll all over the world in a series of gigs and tours and festival appearances that have cemented their reputation as one of the great live bands.

Their gigs are legendary adrenalised high energy affairs that have had an instant reaction all over the world. Eschewing their real names they were a brotherhood and only known by their first name and Brother- like a high octane gang of shoalin monks playing chaotic and dangerous rock n roll they took from the past and created a new future and were relentlessly copied by many bands.

Open Sore – original (Slough) punksters and a rare commodity a band from “The Roxy” that are still going today.. Ask anyone who has heard the Farewell To The Roxy album or even the bands themselves who played on it who's was the best song and its odds on that Open Sore's Vertigo will be the song they all say. Open Sore during the course of 1977 and 1978 played a total of 8 shows at the now legendary Roxy... “The outrageous fashion and music of the punk rock cult has finally come to Slough”. Slough Observer article on Open Sore 2.12.77

s at the Roxy, playing alongside bands such as UK Subs, Blitz, The Pigs, Leyton Buzzards, The Moors Murderer's (Chrissie Hinde, Steve Strange, Rusty Egan, Tex, Topper Headon) etc.

One Roots – Tipped to be a break through act for 2014 This Brighton based Reggae / Ska collective are guaranteed to get the feet tapping and the heart pumping - One Roots play a potent mix of tight rocking Reggae, horizontally laid-back sunshine ballads, skunked-up dub and speedy, skanking Ska tunes. The combination of powerful lead vocals and luscious harmonies is enough to melt an ice cream in the Arctic, pre-global warming! A righteous riddim section combines with grooveridden, skank guitars against a backdrop of power horns and piercing, funky keys.

Influences from The Clash to The Rolling Stones, Madness to Motorhead, hell bent on bringing you something heaven sent. Guitars, Rock, Rythm and Blues.  They have been playing shows up and down the uk since 2011, from up close and personal affairs at their local pub, to playing at sell out shows at the Indigo2 arena.  Since the beginning of 2013 The Brompton Mix have been managed by 'The Jam' drummer Rick Buckler and have been carving their mark in the UK music scene.

The Undercover Festival - Back for 2014

The Undercover Festival - Back for 2014

The Undercover Festival - Back for 2014

A month on plans for 2014 are already gathering a pace.

We are asking people to let us know what they think, what they want for 2014, and we will do our very best to listen to them as this is their festival as well, but as we are a small festival we will do what we can on those requests.  We can say that we have listened already a month since the festival many have been driving us nuts about a particular band, and we are finalising booking this band.

We have hit the ground running for 2014 and one of the headliners will be announced just before Christmas, also we have a great Christmas present for people with a limited number of early bird tickets and early bird family tickets available now!!  We are pleased that so far these have been selling really well so get in quick before they are gone. Details from the website.

Reflections on our very first festival:  “At the time GuilFest was no longer with us and we thought it would be a shame to let the unique atmosphere / buzz that was created in the Vive Le Rock Stage @ Guilfest in 2011 & 2012 go to waste”.

When we set this festival up we looked at what was special about the VLR stage and our primary aim was to recreate and build on that multi genre buzz that was the VLR stage at GuilFest, I hope those of you that were there agree that we not only met this aim we surpassed it.

The thing about this festival more than any other in our opinion is a melting pot of the crew, the bands, the venue but last and not least the varied / fun nature of those there that made this a festival that we think no ever promoter will be able to re-create.

Highlights? far too many to single out really, the main highlight for me was the people there walking around with the biggest smiles on their faces.

We have been asked what bands stood out; that is also a difficult one to answer as all the bands were excellent and it would be unfair to single any out in particular.

We pulled off the event with no trouble and a cracking atmosphere judging from the social media quotes and emails we have received everyone had a good time.

For 2014 we probably will not do any more stages as we think the 2 we had with the bands we had was 110% quality and the synergy between both stages was excellent.

Please note: For the avoidance of any doubt The Undercover Festival is not an open air festival - the festival will be held in 2 rooms plus other areas at the Bisley Pavilion nr Woking Surrey -  undercover by nature of the music policy of this festival and undercover - well because it is....
