Soy Dios is a song-cycle EP released in December 2010 by Manchester, UK based trio Dead Sea Apes. Featuring Brett Savage on guitar, Nick Harris on bass and Chris Hardman on drums, The music on the EP is intense
Comprised of three songs, two of which are remixes Soy Dios is full of melodies that seem to be improvised but obviously are far from it.
Having listened to the EP many times the songs seem to take on a dream-like quality. Soy Dios II being the best of the 3 tracks. It makes you feel as if you have had one mushroom too many. If you can imagine, whilst listening to it, that the walls were dripping away and the floor was to turn into the ceiling, then this would give you some idea to the lucidity of the track itself.
Frequent rhythm section “drop-outs” add to the craziness and leave you feeling uneasy and paranoid. That is said, not as a bad thing, because the track does have a sense of moving forward and drive and is assembled very well but it is also a very dark track in my opinion.
The final piece, Soy Dios III, unfortunately for me is just a noise. An intense, building noise, but a noise none the less. I felt if i was listening to white noise at times and though i can see the idea behind it and the hints of melody coming through do somewhat ease the intensity, I found myself confused by the whole meaning behind it.
But don't let that put you off, Soy Dios is an xcellente release and the other tracks do get better with each listen and I'm looking forward to hearing more from this band in the not so distant future.
