Hailed by the The Independent as 'the best British vocalist to emerge in an age', award-winning singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Julia Biel is blazing a trail on the British music scene. Blending vocals with a poetic yet conversational lyrical style, Julia’s rich yet edgy production style and song writing are beautifully summed up in this first release from her forthcoming new album.
The new single ‘We Watch The Stars’ was co-produced by Idris Rahman (Soothsayers, Basquiait Strings, Zoe Rahman) and Julia herself and features jazzy trip-hop opening verses followed by a guitar-layered final chorus.
Julia’s distinctive voice has been at home in a variety of genres and she has featured as guest vocalist with the Mercury Prize nominated Polar Bear and collaborated with producer Ben Watt of Everything But the Girl amongst others.
Since spearheading a wave of British vocal folk/jazz with her pioneering, self-produced and critically praised debut album 'Not Alone' in 2005 (which led to an extensive UK-Tour, a featured appearance in a Nokia ad campaign and a Rising Star BBC Jazz Award nomination), Julia is now looking forward to the release of her new self-penned material - an altogether bolder affair than her acoustic debut. With album samplers that nod to Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Portishead and Bjork as much as to Nina Simone and Billie Holiday, the forthcoming release promises to be chock full of melancholic innocence and epic drama, all wrapped up in a production style that owes as much to the contemporary as to the classic.
For a limited time, Julia Biel will be offering her stunning new track ‘We Watch The Stars’ as a free download via her website http://www.juliabiel.com to give fans a taster of the new album, which is coming soon.
Catch Julia Biel’s mesmerising live set at Kings Place, Hall Two on Saturday 6th April 2013. Stage time is 8pm with tickets priced at 12.50 GBP.
