Young Knives Line up Chorlton Arts Festival headline show

Festivities at the annual bash will this year be brought to a close by the Young Knives as they headline the St Clement's Church venue of the Manchester suburb on Sunday 24th May 2015.

The Ashby-de-la-Zouch outfit behind the razor sharp Top 40 hits including 'Turn Tail', 'Weekends and Bleak Days (Hot Summer)', 'Here Comes The Rumour Mill' and more are currently celebrating a decade long career in the music business with the release of their brand new 'Something Awful' EP.

The EP, featuring the eponymous single, is to be digitally released  on their own Gadzöök label next Monday ahead of the Chorlton headline show from the band (18th May). The release follows on from the band's celebrated 'Sick Octave' LP, which saw Young Knives successfully chart a more experimental post-punk direction than before.

Speaking about the new material, Young Knives front man Henry Dartnall said:

"For us an EP is a place to experiment, and what we’ve done is expanded on the core theme of the title track – the fragility of the human character – and made a whole EP out of it. All four songs are about a big change in a life: a loss of mind, a loss of trust, a loss of innocence and a loss of belief."

He went on: "My grandpa’s Alzheimer’s inspired the lyrics to the song Something Awful, but I used that real experience to inform something more vaguely about metamorphosis. It’s also about changing into some kind of super killer monster. Everything about us can be changed, it’s just that we don’t have as much control".

Milestones release new video for single Nothing Left

Milestones new video for single Nothing Left

Milestones release new video for single Nothing Left

As fresh-face Manchester pop-rock quartet Milestones gear up to release their sparkling debut E.P, Equal Measures on 6th April, today sees them unveil their second video single. Track Nothing Left sees the band, whose average age is just 18, adopt a sound which belies their youth, with vocalist Matt explaining "Nothing Left definitely shows a much maturer approach and progression but still has the cheek and audacity that we wanted to maintain."

Referring to their previous single More To Me as representing their "we're here" release, Matt commented that "Nothing Left is our "we're not going anywhere and it's going to get better" release." However we wouldn't recommend planning any pillow fights with the quartet, as Matt explains: "The video itself was really fun to do, but I don't think any of us want to see a feather ever again in our lives. Also, I'd just like to add.. No birds were hurt during the preparation of the video..

Equal Measures is the glorious, compelling sound of raw, natural talent put to the test, tracks such as the title track and anthemic new single ‘Nothing Left’ offering up simple but soaring melodies that tingle the nape of your neck and leave you totally hooked.  “As for any band, of course this E.P feels like a huge accomplishment to us, but already we’re set to outdoing ourselves on the next record, because that’s the kind of people we all are,” explains Matt of Milestones’ creative workhorse dynamic; “We just want to have fun doing something we love, however cliché that sounds and will work really hard to do it…No pain, no gain!”

Equal Measures Track Listing:

Puppet Rebellion release new single Cupboards Painted Red

Puppet Rebellion new single Cupboards Painted Red

Puppet Rebellion release new single Cupboards Painted Red

Manchester Indie band Puppet Rebellion will this week release the video for their new single 'Cupboards Painted Red', a narrative of domestic violence told through the eyes of a child. The single, which appeared on the band's second EP 'No Means Yes' (released earlier this year) will be the last release featuring the vocals of Simon Monaghan, following the shock departure of the enigmatic frontman on the eve of a string of nationwide tour dates in August.

The song is based on first-hand experiences Monaghan witnessed as a child growing up in the South Manchester district of Wythenshawe. Guitarist Craig Gibson explains: “As a band we have always wanted to write about real things that affect people. It's not necessarily about being topical or politicised, we're just interested in engaging people in things that matter. In this particular case Simon felt his experience of witnessing domestic abuse as a child was something he wanted to share, so we were happy to build the song around that theme. Obviously we're aware this is a really serious issue that affects people all over the world, so for us it was important the lyrical tone and the power of the composition appealed to the empathy of the listener. Domestic violence doesn’t just happen to women, it happens to men and young people too, and just because something is hard to talk about, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth talking about.”

The video depicts the band performing the song through reflections in shattered glass falling from the top of the screen. Mat O'Brien, whose creative team have previously worked with the likes of chart topper 'Passenger' and 'LadyHawke', conceived the visual effect as a reflection of the lyrical narrative, that would not involve the actual portrayal of violent scenes.

Keen to build on their recent successes, Puppet Rebellion will be heading into the studio with acclaimed producer Gavin Monaghan and new frontman Oliver Davies in November to record their next single due for release in early 2015. Monaghan, (no relation) who approached the band about working together in the summer, has previously worked with a whole host of industry heavyweights with credits including the debut albums of Editors and The Twang.

Puppet Rebellion, who only formed in January of last year have already amassed a significant online following with over 29000 followers on twitter and links with both of Manchester's football clubs, having had one of their tracks featured on the half time set list at Old Trafford (and a whole host of features by the official supporters club) and another being used as the soundtrack to Manchester City's October goal of the month video on their official website. (www.mcfc.co.uk/citytv/features/2013/november/goals-of-the-month-october). The group have also played a host of packed out shows across the Northwest including a support slot with current Radio One and XFM favourites Catfish and the Bottlemen and stalwarts of the Sheffield scene, Reverend and the Makers as well as their own sold out headline show at Manchester's famous Deaf Institute venue.

'Cupboards Painted Red' will be available to buy on itunes from November 3rd

Echo and The Bunnymen - Indie All-Dayer returns to Manchester Academy

Following the runaway success of the 2014 bash, organisers are delighted to confirm another huge event scheduled for next year, which will feature some of the most legendary guitar acts from the British scene. Good news all round then.

The Gigantic Indie All-Dayer Vol. 2 will be held on Bank Holiday Saturday 23rd May 2015, taking over Manchester Academy for no less than ten hours of uninterrupted music. Six top-rate acts are due to play, and one of Liverpool’s most iconic and best-selling outfits, Echo and The Bunnymen, are to headline, with this news coming in the wake of their critically acclaimed U.S. tour. Boasting no less than 12 albums, including timeless fare such as 1980’s Crocodiles, Heaven Up There (1981), and their majestic Ocean Rain, not to mention this year’s Meteorites, it’s a back catalogue of serious pedigree.

Joining them on the day will be none other than Gang Of Four, the Leeds-bred post punk pioneers whose meld of stripped rock, funk and dub has earned them a place in Greatest Album lists for both Pitchfork Media and Rolling Stone magazine, with the latter ranking them as ‘probably the most politically motivated band in rock and roll’. And, on top of those two, one set of particularly special guests - who currently cannot be named until December – will be playing a truly greatest hits set, with a further three acts to be confirmed in the coming weeks - watch this space for details as and when they are revealed.

In addition to the musical offering, Gigantic Vol. 2 will also feature a beer and cider festival, offering some of the finest apple and hop based tipples known to mankind, direct from the country’s leading independently breweries. Doors to the event will open from 1.30PM and the final curtain falls at 11.30PM. As a special thank you to those who made the last edition such a special occasion, 2014’s attendees will receive an email offering them the chance to buy discounted early bird tickets at £25.00. All in all, a mammoth celebration that’s more than fitting considering the name, and one that looks set to build on the phenomenal triumph that was the previous instalment. Put simply, this is one date that simply cannot be missed.

Nick Harper autumn UK Tour

Nick Harper announces autumn UK Tour

Fri 24 Oct – MANCHESTER Ruby Lounge
Sat 25 Oct – LIVERPOOL Leaf
Sun 09 Nov – LONDON Borderline
Tickets available from www.glasswerk.co.uk

Glasswerk presents folk legend Nick Harper on his autumn tour, stopping off in Manchester, Liverpool and London.

Nick was born in London and raised in Wiltshire. Having played the guitar from the age of 10 and surrounded by the likes of Keith Moon, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and Dave Gilmour as he grew up, it was no surprise when Nick made his recording debut on his father, Roy Harper’s, Whatever Happened to Jugula? in 1985.

Nick's talent and energy entranced Roy's fans and it was inevitable that he would begin touring and recording in his own right. The 1994 EP Light at the End of the Kennel was swiftly followed by his powerful 1995 debut long player Seed prompting The Independent to describe him as "hugely talented".

After 6 studio albums, a double live CD and 2 EPs, Nick’s work is still as fresh and vital as that of his first solo release in 1994. The recently released sixth studio album, Miracles For Beginners, is a return to a more stripped-down acoustic based style, from the folk tale of the meeting of King Henry 8th and Francis 1st in 1520 in The Field Of The Cloth Of Gold. to a beautiful latin tinged paean to the the Bolivian President Evo Morales in Evo. But, as with his highly personal 2004 “family album” Blood Songs, he still has time to sing about the most important things in his world – family, friends, love, life.

Nick hit the iTunes no. 1 spot with his single Blue Sky Thinking taken from the album Miracles For Beginners. All proceeds from the single were donated to the Love Hope Strength Foundation. Nick has just returned from Nepal after setting a new world record for the highest gig on earth at Kala Pattar above Mt. Everest Base Camp on October 21st, whilst helping raise over £200,000 for the fight against cancer, before going on to play as part of the Love Hope Strength all-star band to approximately 20,000 people in Kathmandu.

A busy 2013 saw Nick on a major UK solo tour in support of his 8th studio album Riven. An epic recording with legendary producer Tchad Blake at the helm. Nick has also found time to play on new recordings with Lana Del Rey, Newton Faulkner and Steven Wilson this year, via his 6th appearance at Glastonbury Festival whilst also running his own charity concert in deepest Wiltshire in August - Devil's Den

Following their sold out show in Manchester Academy 2 in October 2013 The Orb have confirmed they will return to the city once more for a unique and exclusive northern show on October 18th 2014.

Across a special two hour show they will celebrate their genre defining and ground breaking classic albums ‘The Orb’s Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld’ and the No1 album ‘UFOrb’.
Also adding to this heavyweight performance none other than Dr Alex Paterson will present a 90 minutes journey of the ‘orb in dub

Just like the on-going 2013 silver jubilee shows have been both testament to the longevity of a uniquely original British musical talent and also a guarantee of an evening of floor-shaking grooves, warmly-surreal humour and the original euphoric spirit which turned acid house into the biggest youth revolution since punk rock, their next Manchester show will be a further celebration of both the past and the future…
Remember…an orb is for life, not just for Christmas..

A History of the Future…
Over the last 25 years, The Orb has charted one of the most idiosyncratic paths in music, notching up hit singles and albums, sell out shows all over the world and an impressive string of collaborations, most recently reggae legend Lee Scratch Perry.
Initially formed by Alex Paterson and the KLF’s Jimmy Cauty in 1988, The Orb has since consisted of the former plus different collaborators, springing to prominence with 1989’s ’A Huge Ever-Growing Pulsating Brain Which Rules From The Centre Of The Ultraworld’ before 1991’s The Orb’s Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld created a new genre called ‘ambient house’ but stretching into dub and avant garde.

‘Little Fluffy Clouds’ [co-written with long-time collaborator Youth] was a hit single, followed by 1992’s U.F. Orb reaching number one in the album charts, spawning a top ten single in the epic 40 minute ‘Blue Room‘. The Orb went on to release a string of albums, including Live ’93, Orbus Terrarum, Orblivion, Cydonia, Bicycles and Tricycles, The Dream and Baghdad Batteries and collaborating with Pink Floyd’s Dave Gilmour on 2010’s Metallic Spheres.

Alex, who played a pivotal role in the creation of Primal Scream’s epoch-making Screamadelica, has also pursued side projects, run his own record labels and remixed names including Primal Scream, Erasure and Front 242, while DJing all over the world and for BBC Radio.

The rising Manchester-based 3-piece Man Made will release their brand new single ‘TV Broke My Brain’ this September, as well as a full UK tour this October.

Manchester band Flesh release Vauxhall Casanova as free Download

FLESH are a brand new self-acclaimed "Snotpop" quartet from Fallowfield, Manchester.  With their sneering combination of Madchester-esque debauchery, earth-quaking riffs, and feel-good Britpop, they could even be dubbed as the UK’s musical answer to the bad-taste trash of John Waters films - and lead guitarist Goz knows how to crack out a solo too.
The four lads gained interest from music industry types after uploading their tripped out, soaking wet VHS debut video for “Dead Lonely”.   Their follow up is the cheeky “Vauxhall Casanova”, which is out for free download 22/09/14 complete with a video packed with predatory sleaze and classic Manchester red-brick back-streets.

The band have gone about their business in a totally DIY fashion so far, to the point where they prefer to ‘Match’ with new fans over the FLESH Tinder account rather than market themselves with the help of record labels, you're mother might not like them, or then again... maybe she will?

FLESH play next at Manchester’s Ruby Lounge on September 26th supporting Darlia, more Manchester shows to follow - we recommend you go check them out early.

Manchester Tokolosh debut album Stay Strong

Manchester 5-piece Tokolosh release debut album Stay Strong

A product of Manchester’s collaborative music scene, Tokolosh are a 5-piece collective featuring members of The Whip and The Earlies alongside solo artist Liam Frost.

Named after a mischievous Zulu water sprite, the band blend aggressive drumming with darkly sexual lyrics, creating a unique and addictive sound.  Featured in The Guardian and Clash Music, and championed by Marc Riley(6Music), Gideon Coe (6 Music) and John Kennedy (XFM),Tokolosh's debut LP, Stay Strong, promises to cause a ripple in their native north west of England.

Brothers, Christian and Nicky have known Nathan and Richard since childhood, and all four members have previously played in the backing band for Liam Frost’s solo work.  In 2011, Liam decided he wanted to move away from his previous singer-songwriter work and Tokolosh was born.

Tokolosh has really pushed me in terms of my songwriting and vocal abilities”, says Liam. “I've tried to delve into a darker side of love and relationships - the obsessive, dark and sometimes bitter aspect of it. Some of our favourite shared artists (D'Angelo in particular) weren't afraid of being [sexually] explicit in their lyricism, and while it wasn't necessarily my intention I'm also not going to deny that it's there.”

Tokolosh have supported the likes of I am Kloot, King Creosote and Cherry Ghost and will be announcing some tour dates later in the summer.

Debut album, Stay Strong will be released on 4th August on Jack to Phono Records. It features the singles ‘Bloodlines’, ‘Shapeshifter’ and ‘A Great Wave’.

Manchester alt-rock band Inego

MusicMafia presents Manchester alt-rock band Inego

INEGO are an alt-rock band from Manchester, named after the Spaniard in the 80's cult classic 'The Princess Bride'

Described in one review as 'Manchester's secret power', they formed in the 2009 and established themselves within the manchester music scene, developing their music to combine elements of  Rock, Dance and Pop along with Big Chorus's to create a huge sound that didn't really fit into a specfic genre - they offer a hooky alternative take on Mancunian rock tinged with west coast american and some sunshine vibes, To help bring a little sun to the grey rainy manchester skies.

Think somewhere in between New Order and James mixed in with some West Coast American vibes such as Foster The People or Fleetwood Mac and your starting to get the picture.

In 2014, the band hooked up with acclaimed producer and audio wizard Gavin Monaghan [Editors / Robert Plant / The Twang] at Magic Garden Studios in the West Midlands and the results were truly EPIC....

The first single the Dance Rock orientated 'Startin' Fires' was released worldwide at the end of June with the follow up single ' It's Ok'  to be released later this yet ahead of a full EP.

" Infectious riffs that swagger with a breezy nonchalance, without revelling in clichéd Britpop nostalgia. , “INEGO” benchmarks that breed of Indie guitar-laden bands, now been given a polished make-over, dusting off any dreary gloom and moving towards a more fresh and detangled horizon." The Manc Review

"It’s at once both fresh and nostalgic. It’s summery but at times, shimmers with a wintery brilliance that contradicts other tracks in the band’s repertoire. It’s easy to see why INEGO have caused a stir, their sound encapsulates and reinvigorates a 90s genre thought dead and buried, that’s seemingly on course for a reinvention" Ears-On.Co.Uk Music

MusicMafia present Manchester band The Creature Comfort

The Creature Comfort have been called 'Manchester’s great lost post-punk band’, but they’re lost no more. Led as always by engaging frontman and offbeat lyricist Ben Le Jeune they’re back with a new line up, completed by guitarist Jose Ortega from Spanish flamenco-punksters Termofrigiduspropelling fresh and overwhelming energy into groove-ridden psychedelic-tinged post-punk music.

Their self-titled album, recently released (on Critter Communication cat no CC003) to critical acclaim, is a perfect showcase for their classic-sounding songs that have been compared to Pixies, Stooges, Clash, Doors, early Talking Heads - and the B-52’s if they came from Burnage.

Lead single Sauce gained airplay on XFM and national BBC radio, and a well received and greatly reviewed promotional tour last autumn including London and the North West culminated in a sold out show in their home town at one of the hottest up-and-coming new venues Gullivers.

The band’s history goes back some years working with legendary manager Gareth Evans (The Stone Roses), and they honed their stagecraft with a residency at one of the key venues of the time (The International) while sharing the bill with leading alternative acts like Gun Club and Mudhoney, and building up a large underground following including Europe where they toured.

And now they’re back, bigger, bolder, louder and more exciting than ever.

The Creature Comfort are currently working on new material set for release in the autumn and gigging throughout the summer.
