Nick Harper announces autumn UK Tour

Fri 24 Oct – MANCHESTER Ruby Lounge
Sat 25 Oct – LIVERPOOL Leaf
Sun 09 Nov – LONDON Borderline
Tickets available from www.glasswerk.co.uk

Glasswerk presents folk legend Nick Harper on his autumn tour, stopping off in Manchester, Liverpool and London.

Nick was born in London and raised in Wiltshire. Having played the guitar from the age of 10 and surrounded by the likes of Keith Moon, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and Dave Gilmour as he grew up, it was no surprise when Nick made his recording debut on his father, Roy Harper’s, Whatever Happened to Jugula? in 1985.

Nick's talent and energy entranced Roy's fans and it was inevitable that he would begin touring and recording in his own right. The 1994 EP Light at the End of the Kennel was swiftly followed by his powerful 1995 debut long player Seed prompting The Independent to describe him as "hugely talented".

After 6 studio albums, a double live CD and 2 EPs, Nick’s work is still as fresh and vital as that of his first solo release in 1994. The recently released sixth studio album, Miracles For Beginners, is a return to a more stripped-down acoustic based style, from the folk tale of the meeting of King Henry 8th and Francis 1st in 1520 in The Field Of The Cloth Of Gold. to a beautiful latin tinged paean to the the Bolivian President Evo Morales in Evo. But, as with his highly personal 2004 “family album” Blood Songs, he still has time to sing about the most important things in his world – family, friends, love, life.

Nick hit the iTunes no. 1 spot with his single Blue Sky Thinking taken from the album Miracles For Beginners. All proceeds from the single were donated to the Love Hope Strength Foundation. Nick has just returned from Nepal after setting a new world record for the highest gig on earth at Kala Pattar above Mt. Everest Base Camp on October 21st, whilst helping raise over £200,000 for the fight against cancer, before going on to play as part of the Love Hope Strength all-star band to approximately 20,000 people in Kathmandu.

A busy 2013 saw Nick on a major UK solo tour in support of his 8th studio album Riven. An epic recording with legendary producer Tchad Blake at the helm. Nick has also found time to play on new recordings with Lana Del Rey, Newton Faulkner and Steven Wilson this year, via his 6th appearance at Glastonbury Festival whilst also running his own charity concert in deepest Wiltshire in August - Devil's Den

Summer Sessions in Liverpool This Weekend - Jon Gomm, Nick Harper and more

Just days away and we are delighted to confirm the final opening acts on the main stage for the event, and the line-up for the busking stage, which completes the musical programme for the inaugural Glasswerk presents - Summer Sessions.

There will also be a Bratwurst BBQ, fully stocked bar and a village of craft and vintage stalls to fully re-create the country field festival vibe – just in a church with no roof in the middle of Liverpool city centre. Brilliant!

Now added to the main stage are musical genius in the making David Jimenez-Hughes and local youngster Connah Abraham. Delighting the crowd inbetween sets on the un-plugged busking stage will be The Lonely Polar Bear, Oliver Gosling, Alex Hulme and The Mono LP’s.

See below for times and more information on artists.

Nick Harper @ The Masque Theatre, Liverpool

Nick Harper graced the Masque Theatre armed with only his guitar, a microphone and a box to rest his beers on, but this is enough for the son of legend Roy Harper and the for the avid crowd that had gathered. Being the son of a legend must be hard, but Nick has forged his own inevitable style and with albums like "Treasure Island" and "Smithereens" under his belt he seems to be doing just fine.

Covering an abundance of songs from past albums this was more of a relaxed affair as opposed to a scripted set.Taking suggestions from the crowd as to what songs he should play, Nick seemed to be in a jovial mood even at times having to reject suggestions due to not really remembering the full song. Aside from this, the songs he did remember definitely got the approval of the audience.

Onlookers watched in awe as Nick's fingers plucked and strummed for all their worth. Chord key changes being made to look seemingly easy and his voice wailing out above the notes. The fact that this man can sing and play the guitar in the way that he does is an eye opener in itself.

The only grievance I have is that the set seemed to go on for far too long and at times my interest was lost. That's in no way a scorn on Nick himself, I just felt the set could have been a little shorter. Though I must admit that the inevitable encore made up for that with a crowd pleasing rendition of Frank Zappa's "Titties and Beer" in which Nick got the chance to plug his CDs for sale in the voice of Satan. If you think Tenacious D's "Beelzeboss" is the original musician vs devil song then you obviously haven't heard Zappa's rendition and Nicks' satirical take on it.

After watching Nick, his guitar, microphone and box to rest his beers on, you are in no doubt that the son of Roy Harper has truly stepped out from his shadow and become a legend in his own right.
