Iceland's volcano leaves a cloud over Coachella Festival

Gary Numan, Bernard Sumner and Johnny Marr are among the British musicians stranded in the UK following the volcanic eruption in Iceland, putting their performances at Coachella in jeopardy. The music festival in California begins today, but UK flights remain grounded after volcanic ash effected flying conditions across Europe.

"The last thing I expected this morning when I woke up was to hear that volcanic ash might be preventing us from flying to America," wrote Gary Numan, on his blog. He is due to play on Sunday (18 April) and said there is still a chance he'll make it on time.

However, the Cribs had to cancel their slot, with Johnny Marr writing on their MySpace page: "Unfortunately, despite a Herculean effort we won't be able to play at Coachella this year. We are pretty gutted to be frank, currently languishing in the grimmest ferry port after waiting for good news about free airspace that never came."

Meanwhile Bernard Sumner announced the cancellation of a gig in San Francisco that his band Bad Lieutenant were due to play today. The band are also due to play Coachella tomorrow (17 April) but have not yet officially cancelled their spot.

Frightened Rabbit, Los Campesinos and DJ Mary Anne Hobbs have also suffered flight delays.

The Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull erupted on 14 April, forcing hundreds to evacuate their homes. The ash cloud that formed has since drifted across Europe, causing flight delays in several countries.
