Liverpool Sound City is delighted to announce the world premiere screening of the brilliant new movie Powder, adapted from the excellent book by Liverpool’s own Kevin Sampson. In keeping with the festival’s broad remit of music, arts and cultural content, this is another great coup further consolidating LSC’s evolution.
Kevin Sampson said that, “After our brilliant collaboration for the Awaydays premiere, Red Union Films are massively looking forward to another great LSC co-production for our world first screening of Powder. With our shared passion for music, individuality, independence and Liverpool, Red Union and Liverpool Sound City are made for each other. It’s going to be a cracking night.”
Starring Liam Boyle (Awaydays), Alfie Allen (Game Of Thrones, Soulboy) and filmed at major rock festivals in the U.K, Ibiza and Spain, Powder is a thrilling, hilarious, filthy and fascinating rock ‘n roll parable. It is also a serious examination of the nature of genius. Produced by the makers of Awaydays, Powder will delight audiences worldwide.
Powder will be screening for one night only at FACT, Seel Street, on Thursday 19th May before the film goes on general release in the autumn. This is the only chance to see the movie months ahead as part of Liverpool Sound City. Places are limited, with a first-come first served free allocation for LSC delegate pass holders and a small number of tickets on sale to the general public, available from the FACT website, www.fact.co.uk. Book now to avoid disappointment.

Powder World Premiere – Thurs 19th May @ FACT
Most young bands get started for fun; to get laid; to see the world beyond your own front door. For Keva McCluskey, it’s a compulsion. He writes and performs because he has to – he has no choice. Keva isn’t interested in success – yet his paradox is that he needs to play if he’s to exorcise the demons that haunt him. In following Keva’s plight to put his ghosts to rest and make sense of the songs buried deep in his troubled soul, we take a journey to his heart of darkness and share his fears, and dreams of light at the end of the road.
Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry - Fri 20th May @ FACT
Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry is a feature length documentary exploring the roots of American tattooing through the life of its most iconoclastic figure, Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins. Considered by many the foremost tattoo artist of all time, Collins is the father of modern day tattooing, whose uncompromising lifestyle and larger than life persona made him an American legend. Through rare interviews, photographs and hours of archival footage, Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry: The Life and Times of Norman Keith Collins, explores the past, present and future of the global tattooing phenomenon.
Beats Of Freedom – Sat 21st May @ FACT
LSC also hosts Polish film Beats of Freedom or How to Overthrow a Totalitarian Regime with the Use of a Homemade Amplifier. Written by Wojciech Słota and directed by Leszek Gnoiński, this is a captivating film about the birth and evolution of rock music in Poland. Colourful memories and surprising confessions from the country’s greatest musicians make this story memorable, as does the hard sound of Polish rock. Take a trip into a very different world that will open both your mind and ears. Beats of Freedom is not only an unforgettable music journey, but a window onto another reality, created via unique, often shocking recordings from the last 50 years.
At a time when life in Poland was controlled by the communist regime, music became a powerful phenomenon. The Iron Curtain found itself unable to stop the viceral force of rock music, allowing young people to find pockets of freedom. From the very beginning, Polish rock stood in opposition to the monolithic, overwhelming reality it faced. Songs shattered stereotypes and formed bonds among people. One particular enclave of freedom was Jarocin Festival, vividly shown in the film though freshly unearthed archival materials never before screened until now.
