Kendal Calling Festival 2011 celebrates a sunny success

The 6th Kendal Calling has gone out with a bang! The Lake District’s premier music festival has once again wowed a sold-out audience in its beautiful site with stunning art and a high-hitting music line-up. Blondie closed the main stage on Sunday with a scorching set, it was the perfect ending to a weekend bathed in brilliant sunshine with heaps of highlights.
Over the three days and four nights, Kendal Calling played host to globally accomplished acts including Blondie, Chase & Status and The Cribs headlining the main stage. Meanwhile away from the big crowds, nestled in the many nooks of the site in the alternative stages there was an abundance of performers, bands, contortionists, artists and more just waiting to be stumbled across. Attractions included the much talked about high octane Riot Jazz stage, which featured the sounds of the Riot Jazz Brass Band and a host of jazz musicians on call all weekend long, the Riot Jazz Stage was always last to bed and did exactly what it said on the tin to kept the party going until the wee hours! Other smaller stage highlights included the Get Loud in Libraries stage, new for 2011, this tiny 60 person capacity tent saw the like of Kitty, Daisy and Lewis and Summer Camp captivate their intimate audience with one of the most unique and personal experiences to be found at a festival.
Sunday at Kendal Calling was a mixed bag of treats! With festival favourite Craig Charles closing the Kaylied tent, with one of his signature euphoric, funky and energetic sets that all Kendal Calling revellers have known and loved for the past three years! He took the baton from Blondie on the Main Stage to close this year’s magical festival with funaklicious beats and left the crowd chanting for more!
In addition to the mega music line up of international big hitters, there was also Kendal callings very own Guinness Book of World Record attempt with the largest Kendal Mint cake in the land at 'Ye Olde Sweet Shoppe'. The mighty mint cake was on display throughout the weekend where revelers were greeted with its gargantuan glory and on Sunday the Mountain Recue folks smashed it in to tiny pieces with pick axes for festival goers to sample in return for a donation to their worthy cause!
The La’s also stepped on stage for not one, but 2 secret gigs on the Kendal Calling stages! The Iconic band were the rumour on everyone’s lips as they delivered a stomping set.
This year’s fancy dress theme was Beasts and Machines and went down a storm with a whole host of ingenious and inventive costumes, from the surreal to the sublime, Kendal Calling was crawling with creative outfits, from bumble bees to bears, robots to sci-fi aliens there was a mish-mash of woodland meets futuristic enveloping the whole idyllic site!
Thank you to all who helped make the festival so special and see you in the fields in 2012!
