With tickets selling like hot cakes and the Emperors Field camping already sold out, Kendal Calling 2011 is set for a record breaking year, and all without revealing any Headliners! Well all that is set to change as Kendal Calling 2011 announce the almighty, one and only Sunday Girl Blondie to close this years show as the final night headliner and bass thumping Chase & Status as Friday nights top act. Other bands on board include The Whip, Young Knives, Nero and Middleman. We are yet to announce our Saturday night headliner so watch this space
Blondie is a band that needs almost no introduction. Headed up by one of the most stunning and talented musicians in pop music history, Debbie Harry, Blondie have 40 million worldwide record sales under their belt, 4 platinum selling albums, 5 UK Number 1s and countless awards and accolades.
Kendal Calling cant wait to hear their iconic sound echo across the stunning Lowther Deer Park. As famous for their music as for their stunning look, Blondie were icons of New Yorks celebrated new wave & punk scene. They defined an era and at the helm was one of THE most iconic frontwomen of all time; Debbie Harry.
She went from the pages of Punk magazine to being on the cover of just about every mainstream publication on the newsstands! Blondie are renowned for their eclectic mix of musical styles, incorporating elements of disco, pop, rap and reggae. Their hit single Rapture was one of the earliest rap influenced songs. With a back catalogue full of much-loved hits: Denis, Picture This, One Way or Another, Hanging on the Telephone, Heart of Glass, Sunday Girl, Atomic, Call Me to name a few. Blondie will deliver one hell of a show to the Kendal Calling fields! Their songs are still as influential today as they were first time around. With a new album planned for release later this year expect new material alongside much-loved hits.
The Cribs are one of the biggest cult bands in the UK and are our Saturday night headliners. Hailing from Wakefield, Yorkshire twin brothers Gary and Ryan Jarman and younger brother Ross Jarman are renowned for their combination of natural pop sensibility and love for rock n roll. Legendary ex-The Smiths and Modest Mouse guitarist Johnny Marr is now a fully fledged member of the band.
This internationally touring critically acclaimed band deliver their well written catchy songs including Hey Scenesters, Mens Needs and Our Bovine Public with unbelievable passion. This is guaranteed to be one hell of a live show! The Cribs are only playing a few shows this summer ahead of going into the studio to produce their 5th studio album, and this is their only small festival headline slot too!
True to our word of booking the best in dance music as well as world acclaimed bands, Kendal Calling HQ have confirmed one of the UKs finest electro producing duos Chase & Status as Friday night headliners. Things are going from strength to strength for these guys: 2009 saw their fanbase and notoriety rise where they were promoted to major label vertigo / Mercury Records and with this they smashed into the top 10 in the UK singles chart with End Credits featuring 2011 BRIT award winner for Best British Solo Male - Plan B.
Over the past year they have been ripping up countless festivals and earned themselves numerous award nominations. Their second studio album, No More Idols charted at number two in the UK charts and they can cite Jay Z, Snoop Dogg and Pharrell as fans; Friday night is going to be mega!
Also on board are festival circuit regulars - The Whip, having recently toured with Babyshambles and British Sea Power at NMEs Weekender in Cambersands, this Oldham trio will be showcasing tracks from their 2008 X Marks Destination Album. Including the singles "Trash" and "Divebomb" which were featured on the Kitsune Maison Compilations 3 and 4 respectively. The Whip have also recently been commissioned to do remixes for bands such as Editors, Hadouken! and The Courteeners track "Fallowfield Hillbilly".
2007 Mercury Prize nominee, Young Knives are a three-pronged vocal attack with catchy guitars and drums. This threesome are as eccentric as they are prolific with top 40 hits including the infectious The Decision, Terra Firma, Weekends and Bleak Days and Turn Tail the future is looking very bright for this quirky trio.
Confirmed for the Dance Tent is Nero; first coming into widespread attention with their monstrous bass banger remix of The Streets Blinded by the Light. This super producing duo have been turning heads at Radio 1 and 1Xtra and finding favour with Zane Lowe, Annie Mac and Mistajam. With the recent release of the single Me and You, the future is looking bright for Nero and Kendal Calling can't wait to provide a platform.
Middleman are a four-piece alternative band from Leeds who splice infectious song writing with driving guitar riffs, heavy beats, bass-lines and poetry-slammed vocals. Middleman are gaining notoriety rapidly and have been picked out as Ones to Watch by national radio stations such as BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music and XFM.
This first Headliner announcements are just a taster of what is still to come... the full Calling Out (new music) stage, Kaylied Tent (folk stage), Glow dance tent and five other stages line ups are still to be announced; Kendal Calling 2011 is already shaping up to be an epic weekend with some of the finest UK and international artists to be showcased on the festival circuit. However Kendal Calling isnt just about ambitious and cutting edge music; there are oodles of other activities and events going on throughout the weekend. Riding on the wave of the huge success of the Real Ale festival last year, Kendal Calling HQ are embarking on the tough task of sampling all the local ales to ensure that only the very best beverages are on offer for its return to this years festival! There is also the flamboyant and ludicrous Fancy Dress Saturday where all inhibitions and sanity are lost in a world of eccentricity, this years theme to be announced very soon...
Kendal Calling is an award-winning, innovative, independent festival based in the Lake District. It features pioneering contemporary music and art alongside traditional rural entertainment. Possibly the most fun you can have in the countryside, with fields full of activities and attractions for everyone from families to stag parties!
Come and join us for a weekend of festivity and escapism in the fresh country air.
The capacity is small and intimate so you wont be herded around like cattle or spend hours in queues at the bar. Feel the freedom of being able to move between the 8 performance stages in a matter of minutes and never miss an artist.
Kendal Calling is all about fun the old fashioned way, great times, great entertainment and great friends all in one place!

8,000 capacity - 8 stages – 3 days and nights of fun in the fields in the beautiful Lake District
With festival tickets going on sale at 9am Today, Friday 4th February, Kendal Calling HQ are bursting to reveal the first of the sterling acts confirmed for the 2011 event. With all the headliners for this year’s festival still to be announced; the first snippet of the confirmed acts include legends The Levellers, Echo and the Bunnymen, Beardyman, a Northern festival exclusive acoustic set with Tim Burgess & Mark Collins from The Charlatans, and Mr Scruff, with bucket loads of top notch acts yet to be divulged!
After his crowd pleasing performance at last year’s festival, Mark Chadwick returns with the rest of the band in tow; Celebrating the 20th anniversary of The Levellers era defining album, Levelling the Land. Kendal Calling is pleased to say they will have the whole band taking to the stage to deliver some of the most iconic tracks from the early 90’s including chart favourites, One Way, Riverflow and Boatman.
Another legendary line up addition are indie heroes Echo and The Bunnymen. Bringing their post-punk sound to the Lake District; Echo and the Bunnymen go down in music history for hit singles Killing Moon (which featured in the 2001 cult classic movie Donnie Darko), Nothing Lasts Forever, and Bring on the Dancing Horses (featured in the John Hughes classic coming of age movie Pretty In Pink)
Kendal Calling are excited to reveal a Northern festival exclusive acoustic performance with the legendary and charismatic frontman Tim Burgess and guitarist Mark Collins from The Charlatans. They’ve lived through the Madchester/Britpop eras and are still making wonderful indie-pop tunes to this day!
Expect a string of hits from their back catalogue including: The Only One I Know, One to another, My Beautiful Friend, Tellin’ Stories, North Country Boy to name a few, alongside their fresh new material.
There are not many places where you can experience 80’s, 90’s and naughties indie legends cosied up next to award winning beatboxers… But the fields of Kendal Calling is that place. Ladies and gentlemen, back by incredibly popular demand, Kendal Calling presents… Beardyman! One of the most sought after artists at Kendal Calling, Beardyman is fast becoming a legend in the fields. Since his debut in 2008 Kendal have been nudging him to come back every year. In 2009 his performance was immense; The dance tent was packed out with the biggest crowds Kendal Calling had seen in one place.
Kendal Calling is also very pleased to announce king of funk and festival circuit regular Mr Scruff will be bringing his vast box of master-mixing tricks to light up the stage with his notoriously epic and quirky mixathons! Signed to the legendary label Ninja Tune, Mr Scruff is well known for his mammoth sets and is eager to take the Kendal calling crowds on a journey across musical genres, from jazz to break beat, funk to reggae, presenting a definitive odyssey in DJ prowess!

Kendal Calling 2010 Review

Kendal Calling's 5th Birthday saw the arrival of 1500 revellers for Freakeasy Thursday, an early start to this years festival, now held in the picturesque setting of Lowther Deer Park.
The stages may have still been getting set up but that didn't mean that the festival was lacking in entertainment. From 1920's style bands with a very bizarre sense of humour, hilarious Speedo clad acrobats that left little to the imagination, and yes, socks were included to decorated trees with wishes, a 12 foot baby doll and an array of food and vintage clothing stalls, there was certainly enough to keep everyone entertained right through till the early hours of the morning.
By Friday afternoon the main bulk of the 8000 had started flooding through the gates and pretty soon the once sparse fields were now covered in various tents of shapes and sizes and the place was abuzz with energy and excitement. Once the arena gates opened again we could see the festival now to it's full effect. From the main stage which was surrounded by 200 year old oak trees, it created a perfect setting for the talented acts we were going to hear, from Badly Drawn Boy to Calvin Harris and from Stereo MCs to Kid British plus so many more.
The other stages included the Calling Out stage, for up and coming unsigned bands, Glow
stage, for all those people that need their dance beats, Kaylied stage, a laid back tent with an array of different entertainment, from music to comedy to burlesque. The Soapbox stage, for all the people in need of a giggle and the most bizarre one of all, was the House Party tent, an area full of retro nick nack's and 50's style furniture where you could have a lie down in the bedroom, a cup of tea in the living room or a dance in the hallway to the vast array of DJ’s playing, this place was full of little areas that catered for everyone.
The atmosphere throughout the weekend was one of fun and frivolity. The staff are amongst the friendliest I have ever encountered. From the stressed out press folk through to the security staff, they all had a sense of openness and belonging to something special and made everyone feel at home. Craig Charles is quoted as saying, “It's what Glastonbury should have been”. and I can see why. This festival has all the variety of Glastonbury but hasn't lost its sense of intimacy and friendliness and I just hope it doesn't go commercial and expand too much in the future as it may lose it's sense of quirkiness and originality which at the moment they have got spot on.

KENDAL CALLING PRESENT THE SOAPBOX STAGE & THE HOUSE PARTY

PLUS: A PACKED LINE UP OF COMEDY, SPOKEN WORD & SHENANIGANS
Kendal Calling have delivered one of the biggest music line-ups in the UK and now they excel themselves with a bulging line up of comedians & spoken word artists on top!
The Soapbox Stage is proud to present legend JOHN COOPER CLARKE who has opened for the like of Sex Pistols & Joy Division with his poetry & his poem “Out of Control Fairground” was printed inside Arctic Monkeys single “Fluorescent Adolescent.” More than a poet John Cooper Clarke is funnier than most comedians and is at the top of his game after 30 years performing.
HOWARD MARKS AKA Mr Nice returns to Kendal Calling that he last year declared his “favourite festival”. For the third year running Howard Marks will take to the stage to tell tales of his amazing life that has earned him a global reputation from his drug smuggling past, to his pirate ancestry & everywhere in between!
Mrs Barbara Nice is the alter ego of Janice Connolly, an average housewife who has given up the domestic bliss of Tupperware and poundstretcher shops for the unpredictability of the comedy world. With the aptitude of a playgroup teacher at an Iggy Pop concert, Barbara has been described by the Times as “a hybrid between Mrs Merton and Victoria Wood.”
There can't be much that hasn't been witnessed by Clint Boon, his experiences with Happy Mondays, Black Grape, Inspiral Carpets and at XFM means nothing is off limits and he’s coming along to tell us all about them... What happens in the Soapbox stays in the Soapbox. Get involved!
Artist Jay Foreman (Beardyman’s brother) won Best Newcomer at the Tuborg Musical Comedy awards and will be bringing his guitar and some of the songs that have made him a hit at Edinburgh over the last couple of years
Comedian Alex Boardman has been lighting up stages inspired by music with his debut show called “Hit the North” (named after his favourite song by The Fall). Joined on the bill by Mike Wilkinson who has supported the likes of Peter Kay, Johnny Vegas and Ross Noble. We are also joined by the stunning Glitter Kittens who will bring their burlesque magic to proceedings.
Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer has been hailed the inventor of Chap Hop (though we are pretty sure he doesn’t have much competition!) Straight out of Surrey Mr B often wears a boater and cricket whites, he’s been described as ‘Pure Genius’ by Tom Robinson from BBC 6Music.
Chris Cross has been described as a comedy magician, contortionist and escapologist that's all bases covered as far as we're concerned. Throw in the fact that he's in the semi finals of Greece's Got Talent (that really is true!) and you can see why we're so excited to have him on board.
Mike Garry will be our very own Kendal Calling poet laureate, arriving on Thursday evening and gathering inspiration from overheard conversations and everything he sees and will be putting it together for an extra special closing show at The Soapbox on Sunday night. There's nothing stuffy about him and those who see Mike Garry perform rarely forget him.
Hilarious songwriter as well as personable comic, Ruth Cockburn is also on the line up. Joined by North West Comedian of the Year Andy Watson, his quick fire act grabs audiences with hard-hitting one-liners.
Phil Chapman weaves a series of gags and observations that at times is too much – at one show an audience member was literally left in stitches after laughing so hard, then passed out and landed on their beer glass!
On top of the other sterling comedians on the line up, Kirsty K Latham is our artist in residence, she will be painting live throughout performances all weekend before displaying them all with a riveting talk on Sunday night.
With many more artists still to be announced The Soapbox Stage provides a vibrant alternative from the sterling line up of music, adding extra dimensions to the North West’s leading independent festival. Watch this space for more news coming soon…
The House Party, described by the Guardian as ‘A perfect night out, you’ll be dancing one minute and talking broken biscuits in the kitchen the next’. By day the House Party has a Wii in the living room, massages in the bedroom and tea and biscuits in the kitchen while the Wasted Little DJ’s will be doing hair and make up to keep you looking your best!
House Party even features a string quartet and our old friend Howard Marks will be stopping by for a special breakfast. By night it'll all go a bit more crackers with some of our friends coming along to play their favourite records and problems with noisy neighbours will be eliminated as we'll finish each night with a silent disco. Expect DJ sets from Same Teens, Mr. Sushi, Tramp!, Up The Racket, Dave Haslam, Twisted Wheel, The Murkage Cartel, Juicy, Clique, The Wasted Little DJs, Good Vibrations and some extra special guests

PRESS QUOTES
"The real draw of Kendal Calling though, is the backdrop. A truly stunning landscape surrounds the campsite, rolling green fields give way to craggy rock outcrops, the odd mountain, copses of luscious green trees and reams of shaggy bright grass. It’s a world away from literally anywhere...which means Kendal Calling can double as an actual holiday. Bonus." - Clashmusic.co.uk
"The way the organisers took the hassle out of the festival-going was another big plus-point... The festival reminded me of a smaller version of Glastonbury – it catered for every age group... Overall the organisation and atmosphere was great. This festival is a goer, and it's one I’ll be heading to next year"- Manchester Confidential
"The site was charming, just the perfect size ... Present festivals also seem to place a lot of emphasis on how to keep the masses entertained and this one truly excelled. Would I go again? Definitely – it has great potential and isn’t just about the music, all for a fair price" - SafeConcerts.co.uk
