December 7th 2010

Following a year of massive international-headline-grabbing sellout stadium shows, Paul McCartney today announces he will bring 2010 to a close with two very special intimate and personal homecoming shows. Paul and his band are planning two spectacular nights of celebrating and rock n’ roll in London and Liverpool to end the year on a massive high just as they did with their only UK show of 2009 last December at London’s O2 Arena.

The first of these two concerts will see Paul return to London’s Hammersmith Apollo for his first full solo show there in 35 years, his last appearance being with Wings in September 1975; Paul first appeared there with The Beatles on December 24th, 1964 for The Beatles Christmas Show. The second concert will see Paul return to his roots as he travels home to Liverpool to play the 02 Academy for the first time in his unrivalled career. Paul’s last appearance in Liverpool was in June 2008 at Liverpool’s Anfield Stadium as part of the cities celebration for their year as European Capital of Culture.

Speaking about the forthcoming shows Paul said:

“I always love playing to a home audience and for me it’s the perfect way to end the year. We’ve had great fun with the stadium shows this year and we’re looking forward to the more intimate vibe of these ones. Christmas is the perfect excuse for everyone to let their hair down and rock out. We are looking forward to celebrating with the good people of London and Liverpool”.

2010 has been another whirlwind of a year for Paul McCartney and if you thought he’d had done it all before, you’d be wrong! 2010 saw many career firsts for music’s most treasured icon including rocking The White House in front of President Barack Obama and his family in June when Paul was awarded with the prestigious Gershwin Prize For Popular Song (he was the first ever UK recipient). In January Paul announced plans for his all new ‘Up and Coming Tour’ which has taken Paul across America, the UK, Canada and more recently South America, breaking box office records along the way and winning incredible reviews from both fans and media. On Paul’s recent South American tour fans set up makeshift ‘McCartney Villages’ outside the stadiums in order to get themselves at the front of the crowds when the venues opened.

Paul played a handful of shows to quarter of a million people in the UK and Ireland this summer when his ‘Up and Coming Tour’ came to Dublin’s RDS, Glasgow’s Hampden Park, the Isle of Wight Festival, Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium and London’s Hyde Park.

Paul’s end of year shows will feature a typically diverse set list, drawing on nearly three hours of the world’s most loved music. Paul’s concert will include songs spanning his entire career, from The Beatles, Wings, solo material and tracks from The Fireman’s 2008 album ‘Electric Arguments’.

McCartney’s live shows have reached a new level of status in recent years, garnering unprecedented reviews from fans and critics alike. He’s pushed boundaries, performed to millions and made global news with monumental shows including performances in Moscow’s Red Square, outside of the Coliseum in Rome, the largest outdoor show ever in the Ukraine, his first performance in Tel Aviv, a live performance transmitted to a NASA space station, first ever festival appearances at Glastonbury and Coachella, traffic stopping roof top performances in New York, the inaugural run of shows at New York’s CitiField Stadium, the site of the former Shea Stadium where The Beatles played the 1965 concert that set the precedent for the modern-day stadium rock show, rocking The White House and the list goes on!

Twisted Wheel @ The Masque, Liverpool

Last time we reviewed Twisted Wheel it was at the O2 Liverpool and for a different publication. This time around they are playing the Masque Theatre and a lot has changed since then.

As soon we headed into the auditorium in The Masque all you could hear was the crowd chanting “Wheel!! Wheel!! Wheel!!”as loud as they could in eager anticipation for their beloved Twisted Wheel to appear. The excitement from the crowd, mainly young and indie, was intense and the feeling of urgency was almost tangible.

Pretty soon they arrived on stage to thundering applause and from the 1st note both them and the crowd exuded so much energy it was difficult to decide who to watch.

The band themselves were once again on their finest rock form as they blasted out “You Stole the Sun”, “She’s A Weapon” and “Lucy The Castle” with the crowd singing along to every word. This reminded me of the reaction to Oasis back in their hey day. These guys maybe young but have a maturity that is beyond their years but when it comes to a live gig they definitely know how to work up a crowd into a bouncing near mosh pit frenzy. Crowd surfing and dancing along side the band was not enough for this crowd and on their final song " Oh What Have You Done" the young fans stormed the stage and engulfed lead singer Jonny Brown in a sea of hormones so much so that he vanished from the stage leaving only the drummer belting out the beat and the crowd still singing along as they sang and bounced along.

Leaving with that image and the lyrics of Twisted Wheel songs going round my head has only strengthened my belief that this band are on the verge of great things and not before time.

The Doors Alive @ The Stanley Theatre Liverpool

Friday night saw Stanley Hall transported back in time to the 1960’s as the UK’s number one
tribute band to The Doors paid a visit. As they took to the stage they had the look down to a tee,
especially “Jim” who was clad in leather pants, white shirt and love beads. The only thing that wasmissing was the obligatory bottle of Jack Daniels, instead they opted for Red Stripe as their on stage tipple.

With lead singer Willie aka Jim channelling Morrison to near perfection from the vocals to on stage presence, even staring off intensely into the crowd in between songs, Jim Morrison would be proud to know his legacy lives on in such a talented performer and allows the fans who never got to witness the actual Doors get a glimpse into what it may have been like.

With firm favourites like, Alabama Song (Whisky Bar), Light My Fire and Unknown Soldier recreated for you live, you can see why this tribute band has sold out gigs and back to back concerts at venues all over the UK.

Only let down for me and yes it’s a very minor one, was Roadhouse Blues. This is only because I love the live version by The Doors so much, mainly for Morrison’s live poetic on the spot lyrics and would personally have loved to have seen this recreated by The Doors Alive. Apart from that I can say with all honesty that this performance was faultless and would definitely go to see these guys again. They are back in Liverpool in January 2011 just in case you fancy a trip back in time.

BEN MONTAGUE ANNOUNCES END OF YEAR TOUR

BEN MONTAGUE ANNOUNCES END OF YEAR TOUR

Rising star Ben Montague is heading out on the road to play tracks from his stunning debut album ‘Overcome’.

Support on this run of UK dates comes from Al Lewis and Lotte Mullan.

Ben was born in Farnborough, Kent in 1983. Son to a musical family, he threw himself into sporting life, growing up with a football at his feet, a tennis racket in one hand, and guitar in the other. Blessed with an acute sense of melody and a killer vocal, Ben had fierce ambitions to one day perform with stars as big as those in his old man's record collection (The Beatles, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Elton John.)

A mild dyslexic, his sporting and musical prowess helped him 'get on in school'. Music slowly but surely became his primary focus, and once his education was out of the way, Ben jumped into a van and toured around the UK. The dream began turning into reality when he was spotted performing in Soho and got the money needed to make his first EP featuring the track 'Haunted' co-written with friend Jamie Hartman of Ben's Brother. This song landed the coveted Record of the Week spot on BBC Radio 2. Things then really started to fall into place when follow up single 'Broken' hit Radio 2's A list for 6 weeks.

In recent times Ben has been working hard playing live and gathering new fans. He headlined The Isle of Wight Festival's acoustic stage, the Riverside Stage at Cornbury, and recently jetted out to Milan for F1 Rocks to support The Stereophonics. Ben also performed to a sold out London Palladium as part of Sir Terry Wogan's Children In Need show.

With the diary full of dates for the remainder of this year, and a UK tour planned for February, Ben is now feverishly writing new material for a new record, adrenalised and expectant of a huge 2011.

YOUNG RIVAL - UK Live Dates

YOUNG RIVAL

From Hamilton Ontario comes Young Rival.

This trio hails from a city most widely-known for its blue-collar work ethic - a quality that Young Rival have always proudly embraced. With a sound that is both raw and hazy, dark and melodic, this band delivers an undeniably unique brand of grit-infused, wildcat rock and roll.

Their latest offering comes to us in the form of an amazing collection of songs, recorded in June 2009 by Polaris Prize winning record maker Jon Drew (F**cked Up, Tokyo Police Club, Arkells).

"Jon has a total hands-off approach to recording a band like us," says drummer Noah Fralick. "We recorded in a high-ceiling room with mics scattered throughout.

The result is an album that's bigger sounding than anything we've done before, because it captures the intensity of our live playing, while still highlighting the more subtle aspects of our band's dynamic."

With shows and tours alongside The Sadies, Born Ruffians, King Khan and the Shrines, and Tokyo Police Club, as well as forthcoming remixes by Junior Boys, this young band occupies a unique - and important - position in today's indie landscape.

They hearken back to a time where musicianship was primary; where a band's ability to collaborate and play well together was posited as the goal more important than any other. And yet Young Rival offer a sound that's both refreshing and current; delivering it with an uncompromising edge and swagger.

Critics have responded eagerly to Young Rival's efforts so far. Their self-released debut EP, recorded by NYC producer Emery Dobyns (Patti Smith, Battles, Lou Reed), was greeted with glowing reviews from press outlets across Canada, including 4 star write-ups in both major Toronto weeklies, NOW and EYE WEEKLY.

Lead-off single "Your Island" rose to Number 2 on CBC Radio 3's weekly countdown and its video reached rotation on MuchMusic. Internationally, the band has received radio play on BBC Radio 2 and XFM in the United Kingdom, as well as features on trend-setting U.S. music blogs such as Stereogum and Pitchfork.

(Altiplano/Soul Mekanik)

THE TEA STREET BAND

8pm, Friday 22 October @ The Kazimier

This is what it's all about, Steve Mason in The Kazimier - EPIC is the only word to describe what's in store. The Static gig in June was just a starter for this main course.

We don't need to say much about Steve Mason, other than through fronting the Beta Band, then his forages with King Biscuit Time then Black Affair, Steve has made some of the most memorable music of the last 15 years.

His new album, Boy's Outside;

Having previously recorded as both King Biscuit Time and Black Affair, both largely electronic based projects, Steve Mason enlisted the help of producer Richard X and consciously made a decision to go back to basics; new album, 'Boys Outside', was written entirely on acoustic guitar with many of the finished tracks stripped back to reveal his undoubted songwriting talent. With a full band behind him Steve will be playing the best of the album, plus we will be treated to some classics from his Beta Band / King Biscuit Time back catalogue.

Tickets also include a free after party with very special guest's, house music connoisseur and purveyor of the finest Balearic beats DJ Kelvin Andrews. Plus a live performance from the energetic Liverpool five-piece The Tea Street Band, who recently wowed the crowds at Creamfields and an exclusive DJ set from Steve himself!

Tickets are available priced at the princely sum of £10adv from Probe Records (School Lane), ticketline.co.uk (0844 888 9991) and skiddle.com (0844 884 2920)

John Lennon 70th Birthday Monument

A celebration of John Lennon's 70th Birthday really couldn't be held anywhere but in his home city of Liverpool. So to celebrate the event a monument has been erected to symbolise peace and harmony, something Lennon beleived strongly in. And who better to open this monument than Cynthia and Julian Lennon. The event brought together 2000 people made up of dignatries, local councillers, celebs and the people of Liverpool themselves.Aided by the fabulous Liverpool deaf choir signing 3 of John Lennon's greatest songs this was defintiley an event well organsied and with John in mind.
One of the highlights of the John Lennon birthday tribute in Liverpool is coming from a young American. Nineteen-year-old Lauren Voiers from Cleveland has created the monument called "Peace and Harmony" that was unveiled in the city's Chavez Park, and she too was there to celebrate the moment. This is just the start of what is to be a 2 month celebration of the man himself. Various events are going to be held across the city from a bed-in by the Bluecoat to a Celebration of John Lennon's work and life in "Lennon Remembered" at the Echo Arena.
A fitting tribute to a legend of the city and a legend within the world of music.

Suzanne Vega - Up Close and Personal - Cardiff

SUZANNE VEGA

Close-up and personal in the Welsh capital with leading songstress.

Pioneering American singer/songwriter Suzanne Vega returns to the UK this Autumn with her gentle, yet powerfully political acoustic pop. With just a couple of UK dates announced, she stops off at Cardiff’s St David’s Hall on Monday 1st November. Suzanne’s career began with hit songs such as 'Marlene on the Wall', 'Luka', ‘Small Blue Thing’ and the hugely successful album 'Solitude Standing' which brought her unique style of music to a global audience. Her career received an extra boost in the early 90's when UK-based dance duo DNA released a remix of a cappella song 'Tom's Diner', which charted world-wide.

Suzanne was born in Santa Monica, California in 1959. She grew up in an Hispanic neighbourhood in New York City. As a teenager, Vega attended the High School of the Performing Arts, where she studied dance. Teaching herself to play the guitar, she began to write songs, fuelled by discovering the music of Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed. At the age of 19, she had abandoned her plans to become a dancer and performed her own songs in student cafes and the folk clubs of Greenwich Village.

In April 1985, her debut album, Suzanne Vega, was released, produced by Lenny Kaye and her co-manager, Steve Addabo. Its collection of self-penned literate and understated songs, showing only a passing resemblance to neo-folk, received universal critical acclaim, Suzanne came to be regarded as the vanguard of a new generation of female singer-songwriters. The album reached No. 11 on the U.K. album chart and provided her first major singles hit, "Marlene on the Wall."
The release of her follow-up, Solitude Standing, was buoyed by the huge success of the single, "Luka," which broke new ground in the pop charts, written, as it was, from the viewpoint of a child abuse victim. The song was to bring her numerous awards from organisations, fighting child abuse, for the recognition it brought to the issue. It also garnered a Grammy nomination, and an MTV award for best female video.

Suzanne Vega has continued to inspire a generation of female singer-songwriters such as KT Tunstall, Tracey Chapman and Alanis Morissette and now with the release of a recent album 'Beauty & Crime’ and her second CD in her “Close-Up Series”, Close-Up Vol. 2 ‘People & Places’, in stores on October 12th, she is ready to inspire thousands more around the globe on her new tour and recordings.

LENNON REMEMBERED - The life and works - Echo Arena

Celebrating the Life and Works of John Lennon 9/10/40 – 9/12/80

Friends and artists unite to remember Liverpool’s most famous son.

Friends and artists who worked with the late, great John Lennon will come together for the first time in a historic memorial concert to commemorate 30 years since his untimely death. The one off concert entitled ‘LENNON REMEMBERED – The 9 Faces of John’ is being held at Liverpool’s Echo Arena on Thursday 9th December at 8pm. It will present artists and friends who span the whole life and career of the ex-Beatle from Liverpool to New York.

The CMP Entertainment and Cavern Club production will focus on the significance that Lennon believed the number 9 had on his life. It will see 9 periods of John’s life represented by those who were there, including John’s first band The Quarrymen, the Beatles fellow Hamburg musician and lead vocalist on ‘My Bonnie’ Tony Sheridan, art school friend and editor of Mersey Beat Bill Harry and Beatles Press Officer, close friend and ex CEO of Apple Tony Bramwell. Also appearing are Joey Molland, guitarist with Apple signed Badfinger who played on Lennon’s Imagine, Grammy award winning sound engineer Dennis Ferrante who worked on a plethora of Lennon’s albums during his New York years, as well as Liverpool born actor Mark McGann who is famed for his honest and powerful portrayal of John both on stage and film. He will present a special performance of his award winning stage show, John Lennon – In My Life.

Co-event organiser and Cavern Club owner Bill Heckle says “Anyone who loves the music of John Lennon and The Beatles should not miss this night. You will be witnessing history with contributions from those who helped John create it.”

With more very special guests to be announced, one artist who will be stepping up to the stage to perform and share anecdotes on the night is Plastic Ono Band member Alan White who played drums on Lennon’s classic hits including ‘Instant Karma’ and ‘Imagine’.

Alan White says “working with John was truly one of the highpoints of my career. The world lost not only an amazing musician but a great man when he died and I’m honoured to be involved in such a fitting tribute to a dear friend.”

And if that wasn’t enough – US Beatles artist Shannon and artist to Hollywood stars has been drafted in to produce an exclusive piece of art entitled ‘The Nine Faces of John’. The professionally crafted piece will be used in the show to depict the stages of John’s life from Liverpool to his final days in New York.

Profits from the entire night are going to local charities Alder Hey Imagine Appeal, Radio City’s Cash For Kids and the Mathew Street Festival.

John’s sister Julia Lennon says “John would be very proud that the concert was bringing together so many of his friends and colleagues. I am delighted that ‘Lennon Remembered’ is such an historic and relevant tribute to my brother’s life and career. It’s wonderful that the proceeds for such a celebration can also give a little back to the city that he loved.”

Director of “LENNON REMEMBERED” Jon Keats said “We are pleased to be announcing the first guests for Lennon Remembered. Talks are ongoing with many more of John’s friends and fellow musicians so watch this space as it promises to be a memorable evening.”

LIVERPOOL MUSIC WEEK 2010

LIVERPOOL MUSIC WEEK 2010

FREE SHOW HEADLINERS ANNOUNCED!

Artists announced for 2 week extravaganza include-

DARWIN DEEZ, SLEIGH BELLS, LOS CAMPESINOS!,

CHAPEL CLUB, MILES KANE, CAST

The UK’s biggest indoor winter music festival kicks off on 29th October and we are pleased to announce details for this year’s Liverpool Music Week free show agenda.

This year LMW HQ has delivered one of their most cutting edge line ups ever, which will feature performances from the likes of Leftfield, Efterklang, Chase & Status, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Warpaint, Hadouken, Beardyman and K’naan. To wrap up proceedings, we’re thrilled to announce Warp Records’ !!! Chk Chk Chk is the final ticketed show to be announced for the run of this year’s debut shows at The Stanley Theatre and their first Liverpool show in over 7 years on 31st October.

However this year the multi-venue festival - that this week has also been nominated as Best UK Metropolitan Festival in the UK Festival Awards - is proud to announce one of the most exciting free line-ups in the event’s 8 year history, with a selection of the UK’s freshest artists at the one of the city’s most lively young music hotspots - MOJO.

After their sell-out debut Liverpool show in May, Darwin Deez return to open the festival’s activities at MOJO. After huge success with the first single releases from their debut albumand already a firm favourite with the Liverpool crowd, the Deez gang will bring their music, moves and Radar Detectors to kick off the festival free shows in style on Friday October 29th.

The free music agenda has always been an integral part of the festival’s blueprint, and this year audiences will also be able to get the chance to see exciting new acts such as Sleigh Bells, Field Music, Egyptian Hip Hop, O Children, Chapel Club, and Los Campesinos! all taking place at MOJO between 29th Oct – 15th Nov.

Also at MOJO is what will be one of the most anticipated of our free shows. Miles Kane will make his Liverpool solo debut, since his international success with The Last Shadow Puppets. This show takes place on Thursday 11th November..

Another serious highlight of the free show agenda comes from one of Liverpool Music Week’s favourite sons. John Power will return with Cast to play in the performance space at BBC Radio Merseyside. John has a special affiliation with the festival since his legendary show back in 2005 where he was joined on stage with La’s bandmate Lee Mavers. This unique performance from Cast, especially for LMW, will precede their full UK tour including 3 sold-out o2 Academy Liverpool dates later in the month. Again, please check the LMW Facebook for further announcements on how to gain entry.

LMW Director Mike Deane said “We are delighted at the agenda we have pulled together for 2010. Important headline artists will fly in (out of festival season) from all over the world to play alongside the city’s most important Scousers of today. To have Cast and Miles Kane playing the type of shows that are intrinsic to how the festival works, is a perfect example of how we mix it with the music’s hottest new artists such as Darwin Deez, Egyptian Hip Hop & Sleigh Bells. I’m very much looking forward to the free MOJO shows at this year’s festival.”

You can access more information on these shows by checking the festival Facebook page - www.facebook.com/officialliverpoolmusicweek

If you are looking to go to MOJO free shows, please be advised to attend early. Doors at 7pm each show. We will announce ways of guaranteeing entrance on the Facebook page. The full agenda for the free shows will be announced in the next 2 weeks.

Liverpool Music Week has been nominated for Best Metropolitan Festival, Best Grassroots Festival and Best Family Festival in this year’s UK Festival Awards, to vote go to http://uk.festivalawards.com/
