Ghostpoet at The Kazimier Liverpool - Review

Ghostpoet The Kazimier Liverpool

Ghostpoet at The Kazimier Liverpool - Review

The Kazimier in Liverpool, played host to Mercury Prize nominated Ghostpoet on friday night and for myself it was a wait of 2 years since being unable to get into the same venue at Soundcity due to the popularity of this artist.

Accompanied by his 4 piece band, Obaro Ejimiwe took to the stage in front of a another crowded Kazimier to play old and new tracks alike but primarily from his third album Shedding Skin which has had a lot of critical acclaim in its wake due to its more live and open recording.

Ghostpoet is what Maxi Jazz is to dance. Vocally very similar and the same laid back approach to the tunes but with that underlying fire in the belly which makes his presence quite electric and. Although not as intense and politically motivated as Faithless and with a more trip hop and funk element to his music, Ghostpoet none the less, gives you that same euphoric feeling and when the tunes slowly begin to build to a crescendo.

From more down-beaten tracks like That Ring down the drain kind of feeling to the jazz fuelled Off peak Dreams, GhostPoet manages to keep you transfixed on his every move.

Along with the crowd, he grows in stature and confidence throughout the set until by the end both the people in front of the stage and the person on it, merge into one. Dancing, singing and totally immersed in the music.

Two years may have been a while to wait but after this gig it was 2 years worth waiting for.

ANOTHER LAZY SUNDAY

Website ANOTHER LAZY SUNDAY aim to support underground artists

Having completed our first stage and ensuring the sustainability of the company, our desire is to involve artists at a higher level of development in order to share our vision and our ethos, artists who, independently, have preserved their integrity and identity.

We believe it is possible to break down walls of misunderstanding and unnecessary rivalry created between the different sectors in the industry to create a healthier environment which minimizes the loss of valuable talent, maximizing, in turn, professionalism and economic performance. We at ALS believe that your collaboration can serve as a catalyst to build
a stronger independent scene where talent is given priority over market
demand.

ALS
Our aim is to support and develop great underground artists from the UK and beyond and to offer them the services they need for various stages of that development. Our relationship begins with the discovery of artists with enough determination and vision to reach their goals with the help and resources we provide.

We start with the filming of a documentary introducing the band. This is then followed by a live performance at one of our monthly live events. All the videos are shot in a single take which means they are all live recordings. Each artist has chosen the location of their shoot and each
has been encouraged to choose locations that either mean something to them or are important to their music in some way

As the relationship is developed by mutual agreement, ALS offers artist development advice, booking agent services in Europe, production, branding, legal advice and/or media marketing service.

Since we started last year we have consolidated a great relationships with a few of the most exciting and promising artists in the underground scene:

GIT Award in Liverpool Official Launch this Friday at LMW Closing Party

SOME cities have wonderful pop music histories, some might be lucky enough to enjoy successful periods in the future, but few can confidently say, they have both.

Liverpool is one of a select bunch of cities that can. Like London, New York, Chicago, Detroit and Los Angeles, it can accurately claim to have changed the complexion of modern music.

Now, a new prize, the GIT Award (named after the popular local music blog Getintothis - www.getintothis.co.uk), is about to recognise the best of the future crop of Liverpool musicians who may go on to do what Scousers have been doing for more than half a century – changing the course of history.

As award-winning writer and Word Magazine associate editor Paul Du Noyer, author of the peerless history of the city’s pop music culture, Liverpool Wondrous Place, says, “Music is not just the heritage but the heartbeat of Liverpool.”

But, it’s not just about rock and roll and the guitar bands the city has mostly been famed for, the GIT Award will celebrate Liverpool's current rich musical diversity. From the thriving hip hop scene to its electronica artists, from its long-established country and roots community to punk, folk and metal, the GIT Award is open to all.

Peter Guy, Liverpool ECHO journalist and editor of Getintothis, says, “Think of it as the Scouse Mercury Prize - but, the only criteria being that it has a clear connection with Liverpool; ie: the record was made, produced or recorded by Liverpudlians. "Unlike the Mercurys, there will be a transparent judging panel and as many grass roots musicians won't record a full album during the course of a year, we're asking for four tracks be submitted to be eligible for entry - think of it as an old school four-track EP."

And the prize? It's a little belter. Sandhills Studio is offering a day's free recording time with a top producer, while the winners will play next year's Liverpool Sound City and Liverpool Music Week.

Vice Magazine, meanwhile, has asked Getintothis to promote an exclusive gig at their London-based bar, The Old Blue Last, featuring the winners. On top of this, film-maker Ian Gamester, who has been shortlisted for the prestigious Virgin Media Shorts film, will make the band's video promo which will be screened by Picturehouse at FACT’s boutique Box cinema for the winners and their nearest and dearest.

Further goodies from sponsors will be announced in the coming months.

The GIT Award will have an official launch at Liverpool Music Week's spectacular closing party at the Contemporary Urban Centre on November 11 with the 12 nominees announced next spring before the winner is unveiled days before Liverpool Sound City 2012 where they will feature on the Getintothis stage.

In the meantime, spread the word, The GIT Award is officially ON - musicians, bands and creative types everywhere, send your four tracks to getintothis@gmail.com or alternatively post to Peter Guy, The GIT Award, Liverpool Daily Post & ECHO, PO Box 48, Old Hall Street, Liverpool, L693EB. If you're a business and would like to get involved with the GIT Award, please email peter.guy@liverpool.com.

SPONSORS

A stellar list of sponsors, both from inside and outside the music community, have added their considerable cultural and commercial heft in supporting the inaugural GIT Award, including: Liverpool Sound City, Liverpool Music Week, Cream, Creamfields, Vice Magazine, The Quietus, Liverpool Vision, ACME, It's Liverpool, Liverpool City Council, Culture Liverpool, FACT Cinema and Art Gallery, Liverpool Museum, Probe Records, The Music Consortium, Bido Lito! Son Of Eagle to curate music event at Derby Guildhall Theatre

Son Of Eagle to curate music event at Derby Guildhall Theatre

Friday 2nd December

“Derbyshire music fans have the chance to catch a high-flying band, before they really take off.”
The Derbyshire Times

Tickets: Derby Assembly Rooms Box Office:  01332 255 800

Derby band Son Of Eagle have built up quite the local following and although well-known throughout the British musosphere, they’re staying true to their roots and curating a special event at the historical Derby Guildhall Theatre on Friday 2nd December.

Son Of Eagle are indeed a band of humble origin, having grown organically since its dawn in Ben Edmonds’ bedroom. They’ve built up quite the local following with their beautiful heartfelt melodies and putting on their own Derby show is the perfect fit in the jigsaw. The classic and prestigious Guildhall which has had an unusual past has now come to be used as a theatre.

Supporting Son Of Eagle at their foray into events are Boat To Row and The Fontana Instincts, with MORE ACTS TO BE ANNOUNCED SOON.
Boat To Row
Folk collective Boat to Row, Captained by Michael King have cast off as a five piece, coupling a rare sense of genuine ease in each other’s musical company with a fresh, energetic sound. Boat to Row have navigated the shores of the UK this past year, gracing stages at Dot-to-Dot, Truck, Wood, Moseley Folk and Gloucester Underground Festivals as well as supporting the likes of Willy Mason, The Acorn, Johnny Flynn and Slow Club with their warmth.

The Fontana Instincts
Fronted by Derby singer songwriter Tom Campbell, The Fontana Instincts initially formed to be Campbells studio backing band. The Instincts reformed in July 2010 to play a handful of gigs and have been going since. Although combining various genres in their songs, an alternative country rock band might describe them best although their experimental, psychedelic live shows are much fun: they often improvise and perform spontaneous jams in-between the songs in their set.

Erics 35th anniversary free show this saturday

SATURDAY 1 OCTOBER
Dave O'Grady
Bird
Cold Shoulder

The Shoestrung
Doors 7.30pm

This Saturday night ERIC'S LIVE on Mathew Street, Liverpool is hosting a free night with local bands playing original music from Dave O'Grady, Bird, Cold Shoulder, 54321 and The Shoestrung from London.
They venue would like to encourage local bands and promoters to come down and introduce themselves and check out the new venue. It's 35 years ago to the day that this cellar was first used for live music.

Dave O’Grady is a singer/songwriter originally from Ireland now based in the UK combine folk and blues and makes it his own. He first picked up the guitar aged twelve and did his first show at thirteen. Born and raised in Ireland Dave was fed a healthy diet of music from Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jeff Healy and Rory Gallagher to Christy Moore, Steve Earle and Tom Waits.

Since he stepped out of the shadows in 2007 he has performed live such legends of music as Bon Jovi, Seal, Ringo Star.

Bird are a five piece band, hailing from Liverpool. They combine haunting and poetic lyrics with melodic and eerie, sweeping guitar riffs. Bird put themselves under the genre of ‘atmospheric folk’ and atmospheric is definitely the word. Bird’s universe is magical and will leave you with hairs standing up on the back of your neck.

Cold Shoulder are a recent collaboration of three great musicians.  Drummer Nick Kilroe (Echo And The Bunnymen/ Black Velvets), Chris Kearney on vocals and guitar and bass player Andy Ashton. Chris Kearney, ex vocalist of Liverpool band The Aeroplanes has described their music as bitter sweet.  The now disbanded Aeroplanes hit a record on iTunes in 2008 with a massive 22,000 downloads for an unsigned band.

The Showstrung influences include the likes of The Rolling Stones, The Small Faces and Terry Reid, which is always a good start. And after a listen to the tunes on MySpace, you can see why - a mix of old school British R&B (Stones and Yardbirds for example) with a touch of new school indie.

54321 are a Wirral-based band comprising of cousins and brothers who play melodic pop-rock. Their debut album What We Did With Our Days is out now.

Wooden Shjips - The Kazimier, Liverpool, Tuesday 06 September 2011

Wooden Shjips, as it is today, started in 2006. The band self released a 10” and 7” that year and started playing shows shortly thereafter. Prior to 2006, Wooden Shjips was an experiment in primitive and minimalist rock. After it imploded, Ripley Johnson, guitar and vocals, assembled the current lineup of Dusty Jermier on bass, Nash Whalen on organ, and Omar Ahsanuddin on drums. West marks the first time the band recorded in a proper studio, as well as the first time with an engineer (Phil Manley). All previous recordings, either self-released, for Holy Mountain, or Mexican Summer were done more piecemeal in the band’s rehearsal studio. West was recorded and mixed in six days at Lucky Cat Studios in San Francisco. It was mastered by Sonic Boom at Blanker Unisinn, Brooklyn, with additional mastering by Heba Kadry at the Lodge in New York.
The over riding theme for the album (as indicated by the title) is the American West, and all of the mythology, romanticism, and idealism that it embodies. The band members grew up on the East Coast, so for a long time the history and literature of the West was an abstraction and a fascination for them. Part of the allure of the West, which is part of the myth, is the concept of Manifest Destiny, the vastness, and the possibilities for reinvention, which is not to say that is what each song is specifically about, but it was very much an undercurrent during the songwriting of the album. The artwork also touches on the same theme by using an iconic structure that is both a gateway in a literal and metaphorical sense.
It is easy to see why these would appeal to Wooden Shjips, as their music lends itself to exploration. It is both transformative and transporting, the sum being far greater than it’s parts. The steady driving rhythms are the elliptical motion machine driven by the often thick and distorted guitar lines, melodic and boundless. Where they may lead cannot be anticipated but following them is exhilarating. It is all about getting there, the destination, while the experience of getting there is an adventure. It is the guitar lines that guide both the listener and the band on the literal and metaphorical journey into the vastness. The ghostly vocals, obscured by dense layers of instruments surrounding them, are alluring with their airy mystery. This elusive quality further draws the listener in, while they attempt to grasp at their meaning. While indebted to both the psych music of the ‘60s and mid-‘70s, electric Neil Young, and even the induced travels of Spacemen 3, the Wooden Shjips’ music is modern and in every way their own. West is an epic journey to the edge and beyond.
Catch them at the Kazimier tickets on sale now!
