Simon Fowler from Ocean Colour Scene plays an intimate show at Static Gallery, Liverpool

Monday April 23
£15

Simon Fowler has announced he will be playing an intimate, seated gig, showcasing his newly released folk album Merrymouth, with his backing band at the Static Gallery in Liverpool on Monday 23rd April 2012. Tickets are priced £15 and available from Ticketline and Ticketweb.
Best known as lead vocalist and guitarist with Britpoppers Ocean Colour Scene, Simon Fowler has also provided backing vocals for ‘Modfather’ Paul Weller and folk artist Kate Rusby.

Ocean Colour Scene are one of the most successful bands to have come out of the Britpop explosion of the mid-nineties, famously knocking Oasis’ Be Here Now off the UK Album Chart top spot with 1997 record Marchin’ Already. Popular hits include The Day We Caught The Train and TFI Friday intro track The Riverboat Song.

Simon has been working with Pledge Music to release his new album, Merrymouth, which was released this week and features the award winning folk musicians, John McCusker and Andy Cutting.

Pledge Music is an online direct-to-fan and fan-funded music platform, launched in August 2009, that facilitates musicians (artists) reaching out to their fan-base (termed pledgers) to financially contribute to upcoming recordings or other musical projects.

Simon and his band Dan Sealey, Mike McNamara and Adam Barry will be doing a handful of dates in April to support the album. Whist Ocean Colour Scene take most of the 2012 off to concentrate on writing material for a new album Simon Fowler has taken the opportunity to release his long awaited folk album.

“Ocean Colour Scene has been busy with shows lately, but over the last year, I’ve penned some personal material of my own. This doesn’t mean the end of the band at all, in fact we’ll be back with an extensive Ocean Colour Scene tour at the end of the year, however I just fancied releasing some music of mine own for a change to see what you all thought.

“I will also be donating a portion of the proceeds from the campaign to Strummerville, the Joe Strummer Foundation for New Music for the amazing work they do helping the next generation of aspiring young musicians” says Simon.

The album, Merrymouth , is out this month and is available for download via PledgeMusic on the March 25th.The conventional release has been set for the March 26th when the album will be available in the shops and on iTunes.

16th April 2012 sees the release of A Man Possessed, the debut solo album by Christiaan Webb that features 11 songs that represent the culmination of a life-altering spiritual journey for Christiaan.

Eldest son of songwriting legend Jimmy Webb (Witchita Lineman, Galveston, By The Time I get To Phoenix), Christiaan first came to public attention as part of the Webb Brothers, a band he formed with his younger brother, Justin.  In 1998, the demo album Beyond the Biosphere was released to critical acclaim in the U.K. and was quickly picked up by London-based label Easy! Tiger Records. The Webb Brothers then signed with Warner Music and the album Maroon was released to critical and commercial success in 2000.  Touring extensively, the brothers built a strong fan base in the UK that continues to this day. 2003 saw the release of the eponymous Webb Brothers album (as well as recruitment of brother James), showcasing the versatility and depth of Christiaan’s songwriting. In 2009, the brothers joined their father to form ‘Jimmy Webb and the Webb Brothers,’ releasing the reflective, mature sounding Cottonwood Farm (Proper Music).

Following this collaboration, Christiaan began work on the songs that form A Man Possessed, partly inspired by the writings of Don Miguel Ruiz. “The way this album came about has been a spiritual journey more than anything else,” says Christiaan.  “Last year, I read the book The Four Agreements.

It affected me; a Toltec wisdom book had changed my life.  This was quite a change for a guy who had been a freewheeling rock-and-roller for 18years.”  The album began to take shape in early January 2011, the songs coming in a flash - lyrics, melody and chords, sometimes all in an hour or less.  “I had never experienced anything like it.  They were coming out so fast and they were some of the best songs I had ever written. I felt like a marionette, my fingers moving to new and unexpected places on the piano.  I really did feel like ‘a man possessed.”

With this new, unexpected collection of songs, Christiaan set out finding the right location to record them. “I reached out to Musicbox Studios in Cardiff, Wales.  Mark ‘the bear’ Foley and Andrew ‘Bernie’ Plain have been good friends to the Webb Brothers over the years and had always left their door open to me”.  With Bernie (drums), Mark (Bass) and Graham Ryder (Guitars) on board as the newly named ‘The Sweet Lords’, A Man Possessed was recorded in the UK in April 2011.

Produced by Charlie Francis (REM, High Llamas, Turin Brakes), it also features Christiaan’s good friends Romeo Stodart and Angela Gannon from the Magic Numbers and acts from the Cardiff area including Zervas and Pepper, Steve ‘Sweet Baboo’ Black and John ‘Catfish’ Thomas.A Man Possessed features some of Christiaan’s most beguiling melodies to date, with tracks such as ‘Midnight Moon’ recalling his best work with the Webb Brothers. ‘Life Support’ and ‘My Best Intentions’ express the range, power and soul of Christiaan’s melancholy, often spellbinding vocals. “This album is a shout out to my childhood heroes, both living and fallen, who were always in my prayers as I wrote and recorded it: John Lennon, Harry Nilsson, Billy Joel, Elton John, Billy Preston and Jimmy Webb.  I would especially like to thank George Harrison, who I believe was my spiritual guide throughout this project.  If you are ever possessed by a spirit, I recommend George Harrison.”

'Slow Hearts' the debut EP by Joshua Caole was released in December 2010, he spent most of the following year touring with some ace people such as The Smoke Fairies and Slaid Cleaves in support of it. In January 2012 Joshua recorded his debut album 'Moon Palace' which is due for release on the 16th of April 2012 on Bullo Pill Recordings. He will be touring with Christiaan Webb around this time as well as many other shows of his own.

Merry Christmas from Harvest Sun

A few Christmas words from Harvest sun and news on more gigs for 2012

Right before we go any further we would just like to thank anyone who attended any of our gigs over the past 12 months in any shape or form, sober or straight, we salute you and would like to wish you a very merry Christmas.  We've had some great shows from early in the year with Gruff Rhys in February to the journey Wooden Shjips took us on at the Kazimier in September then onto Roddy Frame and Other Lives a month or so back.

The year isn't all over music-wise though, we've got a cracking New Years Party at The Static Gallery, a class of 2012 if you will.  It's gonna be a cracker.  We have
Loved Ones, The Sundowners, Endeci, It's Murder Beams, Grand Lunar and Cantmixwontmixshdntmixdontmix DJ's keeping the disco going long into the night.  Tickets only £6 from Probe Records and ticketline RIGHT NOW.

Now for the nitty gritty, since our last mail out we've added some great new shows to our 2012 fixture list.  These are
Cass McCombs, Veronica Falls, High Places, Diagrams, Lindo Ortega, Phantom Limb and Harvest Sun all timers, The Handsome Family.

Most of these should all appear at least once in everyone's collection.  If not, re-write that Christmas list cos every one is worth checking out.  Take Lindi Ortega for instance, a relatively unknown Country singer from Canada; well she's just beaten the likes of
Fucked Up, Chilly Gonzalez and Timber Timbre to the #1 Canadian album of the year over at Snob Music.  High praise indeed.

We could go on all day, but there isn't any sign of a dud in them there gigs.  Here they all are here...

Loch Lomond,Goodnight Lenin and The City Walls - 22 November @ The Static Gallery Liverpool

Harvest Sun Promotions presents..LOCH LOMOND

Support from Goodnight Lenin, The City Walls, All We Are

7.30pm, 22 November @ The Static Gallery Liverpool -  £5adv from Seetickets & Probe Records

After a string of head-turning, critically acclaimed releases on Hush Records, Portland's Loch Lomond has brought their unique brand of raw symphonic chamber pop to Tender Loving Empire. Loch Lomond released their much anticipated second full length 'Little Me Will Start A Storm' earlier this year.

The album was mixed by Adam Selzer (who has recorded all of M Ward's records), Tucker Martine (Laura Veirs, The Decemberists), Kevin Robinson (of Viva Voce), and Jeff Stuart Saltzman. The stunning track "Elephants & Little Girls," the first single, is available to listen to right now!

In addition to employing notable visceral and expert melodic acrobatics, the co-ed sextet of Loch Lomond distinctly incorporates the use of vibraphone, piano, guitars, mellotron, clarinet, flute, drums, bass, and other sonic treatments to foil the even more distinct and arresting voice of lead singer/multi-instrumentalist Ritchie Young. He's able to switch from high-pitched fragility to alto thunder in the turn of a phrase, yet he knows the power of restraint intuitively, saving vocal tornadoes for emotional apexes buoyed by string swells and moving arrangements.

Birmingham band Goodnight Lenin Formed in the autumn of 2009, Their songs are reminiscent of the singer songwriters of the 1960s & 1970s, whilst still being relevant to the modern day listener. Inspired by Dylan, Young and Simon & Garfunkel, they constantly strive to deliver honest, experience based lyrics that flow along into their carefully crafted sound that seamlessly crosses genres.

The City Walls
are a rock n roll folk duo that deserve attention from anyone who holds music dear. Taking their cue from musical heroes such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, The Band and Ron Sexsmith, The City Walls have been drawing comparisons to the likes of modern day acoustic wielders such as Bon Iver, Mumford & Sons and The Tallest Man On Earth at their explosive yet intimate live shows. They weave a multi instrumental rock n roll folk rock sound of acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, violin and heavenly harmonies through tunes dripping with rock n roll passion and immediacy.

All We Are are the new Liverpool based Alt-Pop-Psychedelic-Folk Trio given the thumbs up by Tom Waits at the International Songwriting Competition 2011!  UK/Liverpool band All We Are is a neatly matched trio of musicians Rich, Guro & Luis. Their three part vocal harmonies and kettle-whistling guitar float over flowery bass and hypnotic drums that rise from soft and haunting, to driving anthemic endings and electrifying live shows.

A kaleidoscopically spinning soundtrack to your reccurring daydream… All We Are have now written and filmed their second EP in a cabin in Norway to be released in late 2011-early 2012, and touring the UK and Europe with Stealing Sheep and Love Inks.

Debut solo album Numb Mouth Eat Waste due for release 12th September 2011.

A Certain Ratio were one of the first bands signed to Factory Records, making some of  the most out there funked up music that label bore witness to. Jez Kerr their lead singer with his magnificent debut solo album out 12 Sept. on Higuera Records.
Jez Kerr is bass guitarist, songwriter and vocalist of A Certain Ratio, the band he formed in Manchester in 1977 with three friends - Simon Topping, Peter Terrell and Martin Moscrop - who bonded over a shared love of Northern soul, Kraftwerk and Brian Eno, taking their name from a line in the Eno song A True Wheel. Signed for pretty much all their career to Factory and then Rob’s Records,  their repertoire includes classics like “Shack Up”, “Won’t Stop Loving You”, “Good Together” and “27 Forever”. ACR’s cult following and appeal has never dimmed with Soul Jazz Recordings re-issuing ACR’s early albums in the Noughties.
However, Kerr is the only member who remains a full-time musician. This has prompted a collection of songs written based on Jez’s earlier influences and, for the first time in 30 years, without ACR in mind. A digital-only single, Play Sumthing Fast, was released by Welsh valleys-based indie Higuera Records earlier this year, and another, Rip You Right Back came out at the end of May, with his debut solo album Numb Mouth Eat Waste due for release 12th September.
The singles sound distinctly Mancunian; Kerr's vocals are gentle verging on tentative, the rhythmic drive of the songs is almost a throwback to early Joy Division, the guitars grind and mesh in a way that echoes the very earliest ACR records, yet everything manages to sound much brighter and more upbeat than the sum of its parts might suggest. Kraftwerk meets the Buzzcocks.
He's recently performed his first ever London solo show with a band that featured ex-Fall and Ian Brown drummer Simon Wolstonecroft, former Hacienda and New Order DJ Tintin on keyboards, and Treatment’s  Keo Martin on guitar, as well as sold out gigs in Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow and North wales. He has an extensive Nationwide tour arranged in September, when his solo album is released, and a tour of the U.S, where ACR are still cult favourites, is set for October. A well received session for Marc Riley’s Radio 6 Music show early in January saw 4 tracks broadcast across the national network which in turn brought critical nods and acclaim.

Graduale Nobili Live at The Static Gallery 12th July 2011

Graduale Nobili was founded in the autumn of  2000. The choir comprises 24 girls aged 17 to 24, who have been selected from among those who have sung with the Langholtskirkja Graduale Choir. All the members of the choir have pursued musical studies, and many aim for a career in music.

The choir was immediately well received, and after its first independent concert, critics heaped praise upon the new choir.

The choir participated in the European Youth Choirs Competition at Kalundborg, Denmark, in April 2001, where it was placed second.

The choir’s first CD was issued 2001, presenting lesser-known 20th-century choral works from Iceland and abroad. Second CD was issued 2008 presenting Icelandic choir music, most of it composed for the choir.

In 2003 the choir won two gold medals at the Vocal Festival in Tampere, Finland.
In summer 2009 it took apart in the Llangollen festivali in Wales and received silver in Chamber Choir category and bronze ina Female category. In same competition in year 2010 they received silver in Barbershop/Close Harmony and bronze in Chamber.
From September 2010 to January 2011 the choir has been working with Bjork Gudmundsdottir on her next CD Biophilia and will be singing some concerts with her at the Manchester International Festival in summer 2011.

The choir's conductor from its foundation has been Jón Stefánsson.

Jón Stefánsson qualified as a cantor in Iceland, then pursued further studies at the Munich Academy of Music with Professor Karl Richter, and subsequently at the Academy of Music in Vienna with Professor Michael Radulescu. Jón has been organist and choirmaster of the Langholtskirkja Church in Reykjavík almost continuously since 1964.

The Langholtskirkja Choir has developed and flourished under his leadership. The choir has performed all Bach's major works. The choir's staging of Bach's St. John Passion in 1995 was well received. In 1989 the choir performed Messiah in Israel and 1994 the Mass in B-Minor at the Barbican Centre in London, with the English Chamber Orchestra.

Jón is the founder of the Langholtskirkja Graduale Choir, which has established itself under his leadership as one of Iceland's best youth choirs.
In 2000 he founded Graduale Nobili.

Jón also conducts Langholtskirkja Chamber Choir who has received many awards in choir copetition´s including 1st price in the international competition in Denmark 2002.

Sweet Jane at The Static Gallery for Soundcity 2011

IN 2008 guitarist and songwriter Danda Paxton asked Lydia Des Dolles to provide vocals on some songs he was writing, and with the addition of Danda’ s brother Ruairi on bass and Donagh O’Brien on drums, the project evolved into Sweet Jane, and the recording of an EP ‘ Blackboots and Blackhearts’. The EP was released to very positive reviews, and things developed more quickly when the band signed to Irish label Reekus at the end ‘ 09, and a Xmas release of You’re M aking This Hard, with Sweet Jane’ s own take on the Xmas classic Silent Night, brought a greatly increased media awareness of their music. Their debut album Sugar for M y Soul was released in Ireland last July, to superb reviews, and a slot at one of Europe’ s
leading festivals, Oxegen that month. Their live set has been described as an energetic roller coaster of sleazy guitars, achingly sexy vocals, split between Lydia & Danda, and topped off with their trade mark 'dream-pop rock 'n roll'. Sweet Jane are in their element in the live arena and have been touring furiously throughout the UK and Ireland and this includes a show at the Static Gallery in Liverpool

Sweet Jane play Sound City Festival this coming Saturday 21st at 8.10, before heading back home for three nights in the Olympia next week with Suede (24/25/26), and then jetting off to Singapore for some prime gigs at Music Matters Asia, with support from Culture Ireland,  starting off  with an open air gig on the main stage in Fountain Square Clarke Quay, at 8.30 on Saturday 28th., playing a second MM show at leading club Se7en Inch later that night, TV, radio and press on Monday 30th, and playing Singapore’s leading live music venue The Tab on Tuesday 31st.   More dates are being added too! They are the first Irish band to play Music Matters Asia,  and vocalist Lydia Des Dolles has been asked to lend her voice to the Music Matters  ‘Band Aid’ type single which is being released  during the festival in aid of Japan.

JIM NOIR @ The Static Gallery Liverpool

Its not easy to take yourself out on a cold, icy, snowy, windy and bitter Friday night but, like many of the people who turned up for the Jim Noir gig last night at the static gallery, I'm very glad i did. Harvest Suns promotions has laid on a number of gigs this year and this was definitely one of the most outstanding ones. I didn't expect much of a turn out, but was pleasantly surprised by the support for the gig and for Jim Himself. By the way if you are familiar with the name, its a homage to Vic Reeves whose real name is Jim Noir (just a factoid).
Jim's music is often described as psychedelic pop electronica and likened to the Beach Boys, The Beta Band and even Badly drawn boy but apart from the melodic, simple lyrics this is far as the connection went for me as the Static Gallery played host to one of the most enigmatic of musicians around. His enthusiasm seemed to physically pour out of him from the stage onto the crowd in front and with Jim and his band, playing at top neck speed and with such energy that it could have powered a city, it was easy to see why the crowd were infected by this and began to dance around like the possessed. And with the likes of "Eanie Meany" and tracks from his new LP Zooper Dooper on the play list it was easy to get caught up in the madness.
Ending on "My Patch" this saw Jim summon up friends from the crowd to accompany him on stage with harmonica and vocals and the whole event turned into one giant house party with Jim the host and all of us as the most welcome of guests. This was a gig full of energy, commitment and vibrance and this along with a feeling of fulfilment was taken with us as we braved the cold winter night air once more.

The Liars @ The Static Gallery

As part of Liverpool Music week, The Liars are one of the highlights. The American group have been known for the dramatic styles in music and the potential for doing things off the cuff when playing live means that the anticipation for them has been high and with them running late on the night this only added to it.

When the group eventually emerge there is no messing about. Straight into the first track and suddenly you realise what they mean by dramatic styles. It almost sounds like the musicians are playing their own songs individual to each other but yet combining that to create one linear tune. Lead singer Angus Andrew’s vocals are spine tingling with screams that are primal and come from deep within. With drums beating loud and fast and a bass line to match, it sounds like a free for all. Each member of the band doing their own thing.

Although the crowd that had come to see the liars enjoyed it, I have to admit it wasn’t my kind of thing. Maybe it’s my age but I like my music constructed and concise. I like to be able to understand the vocals and at times it did seem the band were just creating a noise and the overwhelming sound of the 2 drum beats seemed to drown out the rest of the band. I admire them for doing their own thing but, for me the only thing I left with was ear ache.
