Sound City Liverpool Announces The Cribs in Second Wave of Acts

Sound City 2015 Liverpool The Cribs

Sound City Liverpool Announces The Cribs in Second Wave of Acts

UK’s biggest city festival reveals line-up additions including Peace, Everything Everything, Fat White Family and Swans

With the announcement of its second wave of artists Sound City has revealed its biggest bill to date with the promise of much more still to come.

The country’s largest city-based festival is proud to add The Cribs, Peace, Swans, Everything Everything, Fat White Family, George the Poet and many more world class acts to the bill for this year’s festival.

Commented Sound City CEO Dave Pichilingi: “It’s a really big year for Sound City - with the move to our incredible new industrial home at Bramley Moore Dock we promised to create a bill that smashed expectations. We believe we have more than delivered on this promise.

We have brought in some of the biggest names in the business this year from The Flaming Lips, Belle and Sebastian to The Vaccines and some of the acts we’re announcing today including The Cribs and Peace. We’ve also selected the very best of the scene’s emerging talent. You would literally pay three times the price of our tickets to see half the bill we have put together and we haven’t finished yet – we’ve still got a surprise or two up our sleeve. Our new model and approach will redefine the approach to metropolitan festivals and make us the brand to be imitated.

Other acts announced in the second wave include Spector, Iceage, Stormzy, Bill Ryder-Jones, The Bohicas, Honeyblood, Aquilo, The Sundowners and Liverpool’s own Tea Street Band.

Following rave reviews for their new single Distant Past and eager media anticipation for their third studio album Get to Heaven released this June, Everything Everything are looking forward to supporting The Vaccines on the Friday night.

Jeremy Pritchard, Everything Everything bassist said: “Liverpool has such a sense and conspicuous love of live music so we always feel at home there, we always have a good time and a great party.

In the early days of Everything Everything we always seemed to end up roaring drunk, sleeping on someone's floor on Smithdown Road... It will be particularly cool to play at the new location on the docks, that kind of post- industrial landscape is always inspiring.

Breathing life into a semi-derelict dockside is no mean feat so Sound City is working alongside STAX Creations, a team of visionaries responsible for designing some of the most incredible and recognisable festival landscapes in the UK, to help transform the Bramley-Moore Docks into an amazing post apocalyptic environment right on the banks of the iconic River Mersey.

Sound City is this year proud to be working alongside Liverpool John Moores University as the official Cultural Educational Partner. They are partnering on a number of initiatives including students from the LJMU Spatial Design Programme working with STAX Creations to deliver a unique festival site. This is a hugely innovative strategic partnership and forms part of Sound City’s commitment to offering students real life working experience within the festival and conference offer.

SoundCity Liverpool 2014 - Review

SoundCity Liverpool 2014 - Review

SoundCity Liverpool 2014 - Review
by Alison Goggin

Its May Bank holiday weekend in Liverpool, so it can only mean one thing.....Sound City has returned for another year, turning the city centre into a music lovers haven for three days.

With a vast array of different venues, including the atmospheric Anglican Cathedral, the ever popular Kazimier and Duke St Garage to the smaller more intimates venues like Sound Food and Drink and Bold Street Coffee there was a place to suit everyone, and if you had your sea legs with you, you could even head down down to Mersey Ferry and listen to some fantastic bands while taking in the backdrop of the World famous Three Graces.

I mentioned Sound Food and Drink being a small intimate venue so you can imagine our surprise when wandering past to hear a full on rock set from TieBreaker, a Norwegian based band who most definitely know how to rock. With a huge stage presence, powerful, raw rock vocals, a guitar player who was channelling Prince's stage prowess and a keyboard player whose fingers fly over the keys so fast & furiously to create a heady blur of rocked out funkiness, these guys to say the least were enthralling to watch and I can't fault there performance one bit, so much so, I'm hoping they're back in Liverpool soon so I can see them again.

As we were on the rock trail, we thought, why not a bit of old school rock n roll and caught Hot Soles, a duo from Yorkshire, who brought the 50's crashing into 2014 with one almighty rip roaring, drums crashing, guitar frenzy wondrous mix. With all the energy on stage, it didn't take long for it to explode around Mello Mello especially when the lead singer decided to take an impromptu tour of the place mid performance, much to the delight and amusement of the crowd.

But Sound City isn't just about rock its also a perfect place to capture those intimate performances, where a solo performer lays themselves bare and delivers their life stories in such a way that it sends shivers up your spine and sends a silence over a venue in case even a single note is missed. This time that accolade had to go to "Amijal", a young singer/songwriter whose songs take you on a journey through his life, some good, some bad but all delivered with such finesse that even the most heart wrenching of songs has you enthralled and wanting to hear more of his beautifully melting vocals.

East Village Arts Club paid host to two extremely talented solo artists on Friday night. Denai Moore, who was performing in Liverpool for the very first time, created a fabulous atmosphere with her silky soulful vocals which enveloped everybody into a warm musical ball of fuzz. She was followed with a fun upbeat set by ex Kid British member, Adio Marchant, who is now better known as "Bipolar Sunshine". Adio brought that taste of summer from the moment he came onto stage with his mix of lively funk, disco and house beats all intertwined with his fresh uplifting vocals. Behind this upbeat fun music lies meaning in his lyrics though and drawing from life experiences he fully encompasses the name Bipolar Sunshine....so long may he be shining down on us.

Lizzo aka Melissa Jefferson on the other hand is far from calm and serene as she rocks the Shipping Forecast to its very foundations. Her stage presence itself was enough to make you want to move even if you didn't feel like it and the energy and raw power made it one of the acts that needed to be seen.

At Nation East India Youth did his stuff with a mix of electronic music and wild thrashing bass guitar sending some of the audience members into and almost trance like state as they sang the words in an almost tantric daze.

Chloe Howl, the sassy 19 year old made herself known at the Factory stage. Dressed in stripey trousers and a crop top she shimmied her way onstage. Her strong vocals and look accompanied with her look will see her go far although songs about teenage angst is not something I can associate with that much anymore.

Another solo artist to keep an eye on is Demi Louise, a 19 year old Australian, whose upbeat lyrics and happy mellow vocals drifted across the eclectic Moon Museum on a sunny Saturday afternoon. That along with the free Australian BBQ made for a great way to nurse that hangover.

For a bit a quirky venue we decided to head to Mersey Ferry's and go and soak in the retro fuelled performance of homegrown talented band, The Hummingbirds, who have been busy too say the least over the Sound City weekend. They brought a bit of the Merseybeat back to the city with their 60's influenced set with a few Beatles tracks flung in for good measure. With their own songs including Bankrupt Blues, a heady folk fused song and their signature song "Back In Liverpool", which was timed to perfection as we docked back in the city. Which was probably a good thing as Mic Kountis was starting to feel his sea legs desert him.

For a truly unique, makes you go "what the hell!!" performance I can say without any doubt in my mind that it has to go to Jazz hands....a group of lads wearing matching football shirts, stripping to their Batman boxers and just basically doing what they love best....making music. I have no idea how many members are in Jazz hands, nor can I count how many drumsticks were flying about but my god these guys are so much fun. I'm not to sure whether it was a mad free styling frenzy or this was a perfectly coordinated gig but who cares, it was brilliant, weird, amazing, fun, insane ball of hedonistic noise that works and I love the fact I walked away with that feeling that you're not quite sure you have seen what you have seen. It may not be pretty..but it works.

Speaking of pretty, Kodaline headlined the Anglican Cathedral on Saturday. With lead singer Steve Garrigan looking in every way the rock/pop star that I'm sure these guys will become. Playing songs from their album "In a perfect world" they ensured the crowd got what they paid for. Polished and pitch perfect they cruised from one song to another. Steve interacted well with the crowd even if his little giggles in between sentences went from endearing to annoying after a while.

The Shimmer Band at factory are not as polished and that isn't a bad thing. Tom's raw, in your face vocals come across like a man with something to scream about and his elongated figure strutting about made you reminisce back to the days of Primal Scream and The Rolling stones.

Ratking from New York, played to a packed house at The Kazimer. Laying down voracious lyrics with and their comparison to the Wu-Tang Klan doesn't go amiss. Mesmerising and totally ferocious in their style.

Then it was on to the Duke street garage, luckily I managed to avoid the massive queues which had formed earlier to get in and entered to a mass of waving hands and dancing crowds as the Tea Street Band did what they do best..bringing the room to its feet. I love watching the enthusiasm and all out love these lads have of playing and as Timo says "Its fucking boss in here" and it was. They provided the perfect support for the headliners The Kooks who immediately kept the crowd on their high playing the songs we all know and love along with a lot of the new album which most aren't familiar with (myself included) this didn't stop the people embracing every minute of the set and with the queue outside still trying to get in onlookers from the barriers watched and danced along with the punters inside.

You could happily go from genres to genres and never skip a beat in between. In fact, I loved just wandering and let my ear do the choosing....it makes it more fun and Ive come across some amazingly talented musicians and a fair few weirdly wonderful ones in the past and this time was no different. If you normally plan it with meticulous precision then next year, throw caution to the wind and let your ears take the lead.

GIT Awards One To Watch prize winner

GIT Award winner announced this Friday plus new 'One To Watch' prize winner named

Merseyside’s top music prize The GIT Award 2014 is just days away with nominees set to perform at a spectacular specially redesigned Kazimier in the heart of Liverpool city centre on Friday 11 April 2014.

The nominees - All We Are, Evian Christ, Circa Waves, Dan Croll, Ex-Easter Island-Head, Forest Swords, Mad Brains, Ninetails, Outfit, Bill Ryder-Jones, Tea Street Band and VEYU – will feature in live performances plus specially created visuals at the Kazimier alongside one-off performances and DJ sets from a raft of creatives.

As the ceremony approaches, organisers can now reveal the winner of a brand new One To Watch prize  - awarded to one under-18 artist - selected by the GIT Award judging panel.

In just six months, 17-years-old female electronic artist and producer LÃ¥psley has received international recognition with her self-produced track Station.

Receiving almost 500,000 plays on her SoundCloud alone for her two tracks Station and Valentine, LÃ¥psley has  received airplay on Radio 1 and 6Music while being featured in NME and being the toast of the international blog scene.

LÃ¥psley, who has played just one gig on Merseyside, will feature at the GIT Award at the Kazimier and her prize will include studio time at Liverpool's legendary Parr Street Studios plus mentoring from sponsors Merseyside Arts Foundation as well as support from Liverpool International Music Festival.

The industry showcase on Friday April 11 is strictly invite only and will include performances from eight of the shortlisted artists plus an aftershow and specially produced set piece produced by the Kazimier team.

The GIT Award host is the High Priest of Party, known only as Howard Be Thy Name. Infamous for his high octane live performance, spectacular human light shows, kaleidoscopic projections and artistic high jinks. He's collaborated with everyone from Mick Rock to Echo and The Bunnymen and his holiness Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama - expect something unforgettable - and explosive array into the fantastical!

This year, the Kazimier will transform their unique venue into a decadent studio of lavish 70s pomp and glitz complete with sequins, navel grazing necklines, ultrasuede leisure suits and all manner of shimmer and sparkle with guests encouraged to dress the part.

Fifty members of the public have also been given the chance to attend the ceremony through a ticket draw on the Kazimier website - http://www.thekazimier.co.uk/ .

Now in its third consecutive year, The GIT (Getintothis) Award, champions the best of Merseyside music providing a snapshot of the year in music, recognising significant artistic achievement across a range of musical styles.

This year’s shortlist was selected by national industry figureheads consisting of The Quietus editor John Doran, Music Week editor Tim Ingham, former Creation Records’ boss Alan McGee, BBC Radio 6 Music’s Camilla Pia, author and journalist Simon Price, Popjustice editor Peter Robinson, Guardian journalist Jude Rogers, XFM deputy programme manager Mike Walsh and NME radar editor Matt Wilkinson.

The judging panel was completed by respected Merseyside music players including Liverpool Music Week director Mike Deane, Sound City and Club EVOL promoter Steve Miller, Liverpool International Music Festival curator Yaw Owusu, Bido Lito! editor Craig Pennington – and GIT Award founder and Liverpool Echo journalist, Peter Guy.

Dubbed ‘the Scouse Mercury Prize,’ backed by Yoko Ono and the cornerstones of Merseyside’s flourishing cultural community, the winner of the GIT Award 2014 is revealed on Friday April 11 at The Kazimier in Wolstenholme Square - picking up a cheque for £1,000.

Live visuals, the One To Watch Award and mementoes for each nominee will be created by Liverpool architectural design agency ArchiPhonic who have overseen projects in the Baltic Triangle. Meanwhile Liverpool’s Royal Standard Art Gallery director, Mike Aitken will create two specially designed awards for the winners of the GIT Award 2014 and The Inspiration Award.

But who will win this year’s coveted prize? Find out in seven days’ time!

Liverpool Git Awards 2014 shortlist announced

Liverpool’s premier music prize, The GIT Award can today reveal the 12 shortlisted artists for the 2014 edition.

The GIT Award 2014 shortlist is:

All We Are, Circa Waves, Dan Croll, Evian Christ, Ex-Easter Island Head, Forest Swords, Mad Brains, Ninetails, Outfit, Bill Ryder-Jones, Tea Street Band and VEYU.

Mike Walsh, XFM Head Of Music, said: "The GIT Award shortlist proves yet again that Liverpool continues to be one of the most consistently creative and musically rich cities in the world. The strength and diversity of artists on this list reminds us why Liverpool is still the benchmark for other cities to envy."

Since its re-launch in November 2013 up until the closing date at the end of January 2014, the GIT Award received more than 500 entries with the judges carefully whittling them down to just 12.

The industry showcase on Friday April 11 is strictly invite only and will include performances from the shortlisted artists plus an aftershow and specially produced set piece spectacles by the Kazimier team.

This year, the Kazimier team will transform their unique setting into a decadent night of lavish 70s pomp and glitz complete with sequins, navel grazing necklines, ultrasuede leisure suits and all manner of shimmer and sparkle as guests are invited into a gold lame world of an era trying desperately to cling onto its fading grandeur. Fifty lucky souls will also have the chance to log on to the Kazimier website and obtain a pass to this once-in-a-lifetime occasion.

On the night, the overall GIT Award winner will receive a cash prize of £1,000 and a special inspiration Award, recognising services to Liverpool’s music industry (won by The Hillsborough Justice Collective in 2013 and the team behind The Kazimier in 2012), will also be presented.

NME's Matt Wilkinson, said: "The GIT Award 2014 shortlist is seriously impressive. What I like most about it is the sheer variety of the nominated acts. None of them fit together on paper as they're all so different musically, yet each act is pushing the boundaries in their own special way. Liverpool is thriving in its own diversity - and I can't remember the scene being this eclectic for decades."

New for the GIT Award 2014 edition, an under-18 artist will receive the One To Watch Prize receiving studio time at Liverpool's legendary Parr Street Studios, mentoring from sponsors Merseyside Arts Foundation and a slot at the Liverpool International Music Festival.

GIT Award founder and chair of judges, Peter Guy, said: “The 2014 GIT Award reaffirms my belief that there’s no region in the UK that can match the artistic ambition, technical craft and musical innovation that’s currently unfolding across Merseyside. Each of the artists on this year’s shortlist have garnered international press and radio while entertaining sell out audiences in Tokyo, South Africa, Sydney, New York and almost the entirety of Europe – and yet, most exciting of all, the majority are in their infancy. April 11 at a transformed Kazimier is set to be an exhilarating evening.”

Liverpool music lovers know their city is home to some of the finest creative talent in the world.

However, eyes and ears elsewhere may need convincing. The inaugural 2012 GIT Award readdressed all that and its 2014 edition is set to spread the message even further.

Following our announcement that we will be holding a fundraising night on March 30th at Nation in Liverpool helping us to remember those who lost their lives in the A3 coach crash following last year’s Bestival, we’re very pleased to be able to announce a whole host of Liverpool’s finest and Bestival’s best for Bestival At Nation.

Heading up the live music action on the night will be Ian McCulloch with Ian Broudie, two Liverpool legends who originally found fame in the early 80s Eric’s scene. Between them Echo and the Bunnymen and The Lighting Seeds have racked up numerous chart hits and become part of the fabric of rock n roll and the pairs own musical relationship stretches as far back as the Bunnymen’s debut album Crocodiles in 1980, so it’s a real honour for us that they’ve agreed to take part in our fundraiser.  We’ll also have the previously announced The Cuban Brothers dropping the party funk and b-boy moves in their own inimitable style, electronic trio Is Tropical, electro rockers Killaflaw and sets from the hotly tipped The Tea Street Band and future guitar duo Hoodie Ledbetter.

As anyone who has been to Bestival will know it’s not just about the music and we have some real treats lined-up for you including a spoken word set from the world’s most lauded trafficker of illicit substances, Howard Marks aka Mr. Nice. Plus we’ll have a rare screening of one of the best concert films from recent years, The Chemical Brothers: Don't Think.

In the spiritual home of Cream we will of course have a corking DJ line-up that will include a very special guest synonymous with rocking the dancefloor in the past 20 years, with Bestival curator and Radio 1 leftfield behemoth Rob da Bank, a selection of Liverpool’s finest including Steve Parry, Chris McGee, Dave Whelan, Phil Fearon and James Silk plus Bestival’s own Little Chief.

The monies raised from the night will go to the immediate parents or guardians of festivalgoers Michael Molloy and Kerry Ogden who lost their lives in the accident and Zach Washington-Young who suffered life changing injuries.

Tickets priced £16.25 (including booking fee) are available now from Ticketline. Please join us on Saturday 30th March.

Liverpool Music Awards 2012

Liverpool Music Awards 2012 review

Liverpool Music Awards 2012

This Saturday saw the first Liverpool Music Awards take place at the Grand Dome Central. The night saw a gathering of musicians and music industry people coming together to celebrate the music produced, performed and celebrated in Liverpool.

With the likes of Mel C (of spice girls fame) and Liverpool Band The Wombats announcing rewards most couldn't argue with the calibre of guests and artists at the awards.

Hosted by Janice Long, who gave a confident and professional  presentation throughout, announced the guests and artists performing of which included MOBO winner Esco Williams, Charlie Blue, Lawson and X-Factor singer Craig Colton to name but a few.

Winners on the night included Rebbecca Ferguson for best female, Hummingbirds as the Ones to Watch, Single of the year going to the Tea Street Band for Summer Dreaming, Ali Ingle for best male artist.

The show on a whole was a great addition to the music scene and celebrating Liverpool talent and teams/people behind it.

My only reservation to the night was the organisation of the event and of the people that matter most, (who without them there wouldn't be an awards show), the paying public. Leaving people standing outside for over an hour without a word of explanation is not the best way to start an inaugural event. The somewhat clueless security and staff, peering through the glass doors didn't help and the confusion continued once into the event with staff not knowing where people were to be seated or even where their passes/tickets were located.

This was in stark contrast to the V.I.P. section who enjoyed red carpets and champagne receptions. I just hope that this doesn't go the way of most UK events where the people that have gone to the trouble to support, buy tickets and vote for the artists and events are over-looked. There wasn't even any acknowledgement from most of the recipients of the awards that the public were even in the building.

But aside from that, the whole event went without hitch and brought together a varied mix of musicians and artists and allowed the up and coming to mingle with the established in great surroundings and a celebratory atmosphere.

8pm, Friday 16 September @ The Static Gallery
Tickets £7 from Seetickets & Probe Records

Debut solo album Numb Mouth Eat Waste due for release 12th September 2011.

A Certain Ratio were one of the first bands signed to Factory Records, making some of  the most out there funked up music that label bore witness to. Jez Kerr their lead singer with his magnificent debut solo album out 12 Sept. on Higuera Records.
Jez Kerr is bass guitarist, songwriter and vocalist of A Certain Ratio, the band he formed in Manchester in 1977 with three friends - Simon Topping, Peter Terrell and Martin Moscrop - who bonded over a shared love of Northern soul, Kraftwerk and Brian Eno, taking their name from a line in the Eno song A True Wheel. Signed for pretty much all their career to Factory and then Rob’s Records,  their repertoire includes classics like “Shack Up”, “Won’t Stop Loving You”, “Good Together” and “27 Forever”. ACR’s cult following and appeal has never dimmed with Soul Jazz Recordings re-issuing ACR’s early albums in the Noughties.
However, Kerr is the only member who remains a full-time musician. This has prompted a collection of songs written based on Jez’s earlier influences and, for the first time in 30 years, without ACR in mind. A digital-only single, Play Sumthing Fast, was released by Welsh valleys-based indie Higuera Records earlier this year, and another, Rip You Right Back came out at the end of May, with his debut solo album Numb Mouth Eat Waste due for release 12th September.
The singles sound distinctly Mancunian; Kerr's vocals are gentle verging on tentative, the rhythmic drive of the songs is almost a throwback to early Joy Division, the guitars grind and mesh in a way that echoes the very earliest ACR records, yet everything manages to sound much brighter and more upbeat than the sum of its parts might suggest. Kraftwerk meets the Buzzcocks.
He's recently performed his first ever London solo show with a band that featured ex-Fall and Ian Brown drummer Simon Wolstonecroft, former Hacienda and New Order DJ Tintin on keyboards, and Treatment’s  Keo Martin on guitar, as well as sold out gigs in Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow and North wales. He has an extensive Nationwide tour arranged in September, when his solo album is released, and a tour of the U.S, where ACR are still cult favourites, is set for October. A well received session for Marc Riley’s Radio 6 Music show early in January saw 4 tracks broadcast across the national network which in turn brought critical nods and acclaim.
