For every single one of us, this is the most important thing we have ever done,” says Alex Sumner, guitarist of Derby tykes A World Defined, of his band’s forthcoming mini-album ‘In Absence’. Of course, to any musician passionate about their art, every release is going to feel like a zenith of significance, but this ambitious quintet might just mean it more than most.

Perfectionists by their own admission, A World Defined - completed by vocalist Liam Reeves, guitarist Jordan Arnold, bassist Matt Pearson and drummer Harry Gavuzzi - spent a year locked away focused on writing new material, engaging a harsh level of quality control that saw many would-be songs twitching a death rattle on the rehearsal room floor.

The songs that made the cut shape ‘In Absence’, a release the band hark as their defining moment. “We want everyone who hears about us, reads about us or sees us even once to listen to this release,” says Sumner; “This release has a lot of personality, and a ridiculous amount of work went into it. We honestly think it will everyone will be able to appreciate it; it will make an impression.”

Blending jagged post-hardcore guitars with layers of shimmering atmospherics and ambient interludes that hark fondly back to Thrice's 'Alchemy Index' masterstrokes, A World Defined are perhaps most, ahem, defined by the inimitable vocals of frontman Liam Reeves. Part impassioned, soulful howl, part haunting drawl, Reeves’ vocals bridge the tonal chasm between alternative and indie rarely explored by bands of either persuasion, granting the band’s enveloping, winding songwriting a unique and compelling edge.

Before the writing of ‘In Absence’ we were at sea over where we were as a group, and how we wanted to move forward,” concludes Sumner. “Music is expression, and this release is our statement of clarity. We have really come together and we have never felt better than we do now. We want this to be the start of something big!
