Plastikman to perform at Sónar as he announces first album in over a decade

The Canadian artist Richie Hawtin gives us a glimpse of his new album as Plastikman, the first in over 10 years, which will be digitally released on 10th June, just two days before its only performance worldwide.

“EX" is the eagerly anticipated new album from Plastikman - the project with which Richie Hawtin gained worldwide recognition in the 1990s. The album was recorded live at the Guggenheim Museum in New York and will be presented live and exclusively at Sónar by Day with the show "Objekt” on Thursday 12th June. The date at Sónar will be Plastikman's only live show in 2014 and new tracks will be presented at the Barcelona festival, pushing the boundaries of techno, offering a synchronicity of art and sound, a place for electronica that’s both cinematic and thought-provoking. The Plastikman show (which extends the closing time at Sónar on Thursday 12th until 11 pm) arrives in Barcelona with a special adaptation for SonarVillage, with a spectacular specially constructed LED obelisk. On the next day, Friday 13th June, Hawtin will be performing at Sónar once again - this time with one of his high-precision technological sets at SonarClub (Sónar by Night).

“EX" will be released digitally on 10th June and in physical format (vinyl, CD and a limited edition for SubPac, a new portable bass system) on 14th July, on MINUS / Mute. Mute is the label run by Daniel Miller who will be responsible for the set that provides a prelude to Plastikman's performance at Sónar by Day on Thursday.  “EX" includes seven unreleased tracks, all of which have the two letters (E and X) at the start of the titles: EXposed, EXtend, EXpand, EXtrude, EXplore, EXpire and EXhale.

Goodbye, Labrador, with roots in Brooklyn, Barcelona and Prague, blend stateside harmonies with distinctly European nostalgia.

Formed in 2008 in a dimly-lit bar in Barcelona's neighbourhood of Grácia, eager to create the band decided to use their shared love of early 80s punk and post-punk, to 90s art rock. They began recording demos before relocating to different cities. Later, they reunited for their first shows in Portugal, which earned them many fans.

Long distance relationships are gut-wrenchingly difficult. Producing an album long distance is something entirely different—and exponentially more challenging.

The early days proved to be quite difficult. It meant long days writing in musty rehearsal rooms and countless nights sleeping on foreign beds and couches on both sides of the Atlantic. Song ideas were traded by email, band meetings held via Skype. A great idea that was inspired at midnight in New York had to wait until the next day to be heard in Europe.

In 2010, NYC, the band recorded and produced their self-titled debut, featuring catchy vocal duets over layered guitars and mechanical rhythms. In 2011, following performances in the US and Europe, the band began work on their follow-up release in Lisbon, Portugal.

The band describes their work sessions as intense and consuming, requiring monk-like dedication. But they have grown together through these immersive experiences, forging deep friendships and a shared creative voice. When asked about what being in Goodbye, Labrador has meant to him, singer Martin Pípal simply responds, “to belong where I want to belong.”
