BoomTown Fair

BoomTown Fair announces over 400 bands

Over the past month the world’s biggest pop-up city festival, BoomTown Fair has unveiled the 400 plus artists set to perform within the make-believe metropolis this summer. Taking place over 7th – 10th August in Hampshire, BoomTown Fair’s new headliners include; Irish-African fusion Afro Celt Sound System, French gypsy gyrators Babylon Circus, pioneering banging bass producer Eats Everything and American ska innovators, The Toasters and Voodoo Glow Skulls. These top notch international acts will appear alongside all previously announced artists including; The Cat Empire, NOFX, Jimmy Cliff, The Wailers, Tinariwen, Bellowhead, Tipper, Raggasonic and hundreds more, plus there is still one extra special Saturday night headliner still to be unveiled!

All eight of the district line ups have now been released covering a huge and diverse range of acts and genres from all over the world: Blues from Mali and Jamaica, dancehall from France and Bermuda, gypsy from Spain and Australia, electro-swing from Italy and Switzerland, big brass bands from Rajasthan and New Orleans, Afro-Funk from Wales and Columbia, Pirate bands from Holland and Texas, ska out of Sweden and Scotland and folk-punks from Canada and Ireland to name just a few! See below for an overview of each district and some of the musical highlights to keep an eye open for!

OldTown District can be found beyond the hustle and bustle of the Town Centre, it houses the ramshackle remnants of the glory days amongst the dilapidated buildings of this once the thriving port from BoomTown’s rise to greatness, however OldTown has long since been the dwelling of pirates and despicable souls!! Saturday will see a full on Pirate takeover of all venues and stages of OldTown, with a total influx of all things pirate! Swashbuckling their way through all the pirate madness are other acts include; Russkaja, WooHoo Revue, The Destroyers, Diving for Sunken Treasure and Tako Lako.

Mayfair Avenue is the hub of high class with its swanky electro-swing clubs and live swing bands, venues include; The Ballroom, The Gentlemen’s Club and Bump (Roller Disco). Get ready for the hottest party in town as the Masked Ball will be swooping into the streets of MayFair on Sunday evening! Top acts to be found mingling with the BoomTown glitterati are: Klischée, The Sweet Life Society and Electric Swing Circus, Smokey Joe & The Kid.

ChinaTown is filled with the most ‘avin it levels of punk: ska punk, rockin’ punk, folk punk and polka punk, as well as a healthy dollop of ‘hell jazz‘n’roll’ thrown in for good measure! The venues include the ChinaTown Courtyard and Devil Kicks Dancehall, acts heading up the bill for the weekend comprise of ground-breaking American Ska band, Voodoo Glow Skulls, pioneering their blend of hard-core and ska these stalwarts have been striding it out since the mid-80s and will give the Devil Kick’s Dancehall one almighty a closing party as the last band on Sunday night! Over on the ChinaTown Courtyard are Jaya the Cat, treating the ChinaTown folks to an uncompromising and original mix of reggae, punk rock and ska!

Whistlers Green has recently been upgraded and rejuvenated. This culture oozing zone of BoomTown is on hand to soothe your aching soul with some of the very best this globe has to offer in folk, blues and world music, all within its very own main stage, The Old Mines. Along with headliners multi-award winning Afro Celt Sound System, Tinarwen, Bellowhead and Playing for Change there will be lesser known, but equally absorbing artists such as Beans on Toast, Treacherous Orchestra, Dizraeli and the Small Gods, Sam Lee & Friends and many more. This area will be providing the soundtrack to a perfect summer’s day with uplifting melodies and triumphant tunes!

Wild West, amongst the dusty streets and housed in the rickety buildings of this freshly re-discovered area of BoomTown, the ultimate in Hillbilly, Bluegrass, Cajun, Yehaa, Cowpunk, Dirty Blues and of course Scrumpy and Western can be found! Heading up the bill is harmonica and beatboxing blues guru, Son of Dave, festival regulars Pronghorn and along with some of the very best band names on the scene: Lumberjack Cowboy Heartbreak Trucking Company, Screamin' Miss Jackson and the Slap Ya Mama Big Band and Johnny Cage and the Voodoo Groove to mention just a few!!!

TrenchTown not only boasts the best in dub, reggae, dancehall and jungle, but possibly three of the most notable stages that any one district alone has to offer, with The Lion’s Den Aztec temple, Tangled Roots forest party and the Hidden Woods sun-drenched clearing. TrenchTown is where reggae legends Jimmy Cliff and The Wailers can be found alongside many up and coming gems including Bermudan dancehall MC Uzimon with his borderline parody lyrics that are as funny as they are clever and Brushy One String, if sunshine and smiles were to be combined in human form it would be Brushy and his guitar’s one string of happiness!

DownTown hosts some of the most popular venues for late night shenanigans including Arcadia, BoomBox, the Dance Off, The Bodyshop and ASBO Disco. Lurking within these seedy establishments is the very best in breaks, break-core, drum’n’bass, garage, gabba, grime, jungle etc… Featuring on amongst 100’s of other is one of the most exhilarating talents to come out of the scene in recent times, Rockwell! There will also be a full on Old Skool takeover of DownTown with 2 Bad Mice, Altern8, Billy Bunter, Ray Keith and Aphrodite on the Sunday night.

Barrio Loco, the winning district at the 2013 elections, showcases dirty bass in its multitude of venues including Poco Loco and Circo Baile. With the newest headliner on the bill, the omnivorous beat-maker Eats Everything, currently at the forefront of an emerging wave of talented producers to come out of the West Country’s bass epicentre Bristol, helping define an entirely new genre of forward-thinking underground music. Along with other amazing dance music frontrunners, Special Request, Stanton Warriors, Ms Dynamite and many more!!

Tickets are still available from the website at the final tier price of £150 (+BF and EcoBond): http://www.boomtownfair.co.uk/tickets. Love Saves The Day returns to Bristol's Castle Park in May for a third edition of the cutting edge music festival. Having sold out in both its previous years, months in advance of the shows, Love Saves The Day has expanded to a two date event for 2014 and will once again immerse Bristol in the very best electronic and bass music.

Saturday

Rocking the Main Stage on Saturday will be local hero Eats Everything whose expertly crafted mix of classic 80s and 90s house and contemporary UK bass has seen him receive such accolades as DJ Magazine's 'Best British DJ' and 'Best Breakthrough Producer' awards as well as becoming the highest new entry in Resident Advisor's celebrated 'Top 100 DJs Poll'. Radio 1's Annie Mac is a true champion of the underground and one of the most in demand club and festival DJ's on the planet. Her widely respected Friday night slot on Radio 1 is essential listening and Annie always knows how to work the crowd.

Clean Bandit are one of the most exciting new dance bands in the UK, and have recently scored their first Number One in January with 'Rather Be' feat. Jess Glynne. First appearing at Love Saves The Day last year, we are really proud to have them return to play one of the premier slots on the Main Stage.

Returning to the fold after a brief hiatus are the mighty Hercules and Love Affair. A collaborative rotating door of personalities, led by the ringmaster of Andy Butler, the new line-up promises some amazing new music and a brand new album this spring, featuring such amazing voices as John Grant, Rouge Mary and Belgian Singer Gustaphe. One thing that we know is whatever the ensemble, H and LV have always put on shows to remember!

Cyril Hahn's expertly executed take on deep house and modern RandB has made him the go-to remixer of the the moment. With influences stemming everywhere from French filter house and hard-core punk through to an affinity with the reverb soaked tones of modern post-rock it's no wonder that this twenty-something wunderkid has made fans of such electronic and indie luminaries as Diplo, the XX, Jessie Ware and his PMR label mates Disclosure

Nina Kraviz sublime combination of deep house and techno has seen her become one of the hottest new names on the scene whilst Craig Richards flies the flag for the tech house fraternity.

Love Saves The Day is delighted to welcome Norway's Todd Terje who is described by Mixmag as the 'King of the summer jams' and will be performing live at the festival as well as Subb-An, Waifs and Strays, Crazy P, Solomon Grey, Moko, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Feel The Real and many more to ensure that Saturday is a relentless aural feast.

Sunday

Sunday will see the mighty SBTRKT headline the main stage at Love Saves The Day. From his early dub-tinged club focused singles to the crossover success of his self-titled debut album, Sbtrkt has never been afraid to push musical boundaries and his forthcoming 2014 album is one that is sure to break new ground in what we understand as live electronic dance music.

Preceding Sbtrkt will be one of the most respected names in music Jamie XX. Outside of his day job in Mercury Prize winning electronic indie outfit the XX, Jamie is a prolific producer and remixer. His signature combination of haunting melodies and low key club percussion provide the backbone for his work. An active DJ career, collaboration with the late, great Gil Scott-Heron, production work for rap heavyweight Drake and a series of remixes for Radiohead are an indicator of exactly how diverse an artist he has become.

Surely one of the most hyped and eagerly anticipated albums of 2014 already is forthcoming from Neneh Cherry with RocketNumberNine. Produced by man-of-the-moment FourTet, with guests such as Robyn featuring, it is Neneh's first solo album in 17 years. Neneh also has a special affinity with Bristol, having been amongst the first to champion the 'Wild Bunch' who later became 'Massive Attack', lending them her studio many years ago that enabled the recording of the seminal 'Blue Lines'. This is going to be a pretty special Bristol show for us all.

Paul Woolford's Special Request moniker was launched in March 2012 via two bold white label 12" singles. The project captures and distils the energy and unruly conventions of UK pirate radio and uses that as a springboard of inspiration for a series of productions that span from heavyweight darkside techno to chaotic, eye of the storm jungle tear-outs. We've long been a fan of Woolford's sets and can't wait to see him perform as the rampant Special Request.

Despite the generations between them, dub production stalwart Adrian Sherwood and fresh-faced dub step producer Pinch have teamed up to create an incredible clash of heritage dancehall, reggae and modern electronic music. Their set will be highly anticipated as will performances from drum and bass legend Shy FX, bass boy of the moment Dismantle and another of Radio 1's champions of dance music B. Traits. The legendary Greg Wilson will take to the decks at the UK's finest electronic music festival with Gentleman's Dub Club, A Sagittarian, Jus Now, Congo Natty and many others ensuring that festival goers enjoy the very best electronic sounds the globe has to offer.

Love Saves The Day partners with some of Bristol's and the UKs finest clubbing institutions including Just Jack, Futureboogie, The Dance Off, Teachings In Dub, Black Butter, Digital Soundboy, The Blast, Horse Meat Disco and Soul Train.

More names will be added shortly as Love Saves The Day builds upon the legacy it laid down over the past 2 years.

Having sold out last year’s inaugural festival in a staggering seven weeks, Love Saves The Day returns to Bristol for a day of musical anarchy, immersing Castle Park in very best in dance music.  Conceived by the brains behind Glastonbury’s WOW stage, See No Evil and one half of the team behind the much lauded In:Motion series, Love Saves The Day celebrates musical pioneers and innovators bringing together some of the finest DJ’s and live acts that the globe has to offer.

Love Saves The Day are delighted to play host to a live performance from eclectic multi instrumentalist, Bonobo. Having gained worldwide recognition for his unique and untarnished approach to production, Bonobo is a revered name on the World-wide dance music circuit.  He rocked the Futureboogie stage last year with a fantastic DJ set – this time he brings with him a full live set-up to perform on the Main-Stage.

Seth Troxler is defined by the consistently brilliant and beautifully unpredictable approach to his sets.  This Detroit house inspired dynamo and co-founder of Visionquest was rated as the world’s best DJ in Resident Advisor’s 2012 DJ poll.

One of the dance music success stories of 2012 was peerless clan Rudimental who took the nation by storm with their number one single ‘Feel The Love’. Their highly anticipated debut album is due for release in 2013.   Rudimental will be performing live for what promises to be a storm of a show.

London based duo, AlunaGeorge are the name on everyone’s lips in 2013.  Having been together for barely a year, this talented duo’s infectious mixes are immersed in sweet harmonies and electronic charm.  Nominated for both the BBC Sounds of 2013 and the Brits Critics Choice award, their much-anticipated live performance at Love Saves The Day will be un-missable as will technicolor collective Crazy P who have been leaving their mark on the landscape of British dance music for the last 15 years.

Bristol resident Eats Everything has gained international recognition for his signature brand of bass heavy house, doused in techy cut ups and soulful harmonies whilst Joy Orbison has been a key figure on the circuit since his seminal track Hyph Mngo blew up in 2009 and the prolific producer has since released a series of deservingly hyped tracks including his infamous collaborations with Boddika.

Jackmaster is an integral part of the BBC’s new DJ roster and the Numbers founder continues to pave the way in UK bass movement.  Expect a sharp track set, featuring everything from Detroit house and 90’s dance classics to disco anthems and garage.  Meanwhile Monki, another of Radio One’s ‘In New DJ’s We Trust’ promises to show us that the ladies are doing it for us – just as much as the new wave of males.

As with last year, Love Saves The Day promises to be the place to see acts before they blow up into the main stream.  Hoping to follow acts such as Disclosure and Jessie Ware, who graced the festival in 2012, are the much-hyped Bicep, Bondax, Dusky, Roses Gabor and The Other Tribe.  Watch this space.

Mr Scruff is the legendary DJ, cartoonist, producer and tea drinker.  His much revered DJ sets take in Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, Jazz, Reggae, Dubstep, Latin, African, Ska, Disco, House, Funk, Breaks, Soundtracks & lots more and his set will be an undoubted festival high.

Shy FX also leads in his heralded Digital Soundboy crew to the festival for the first time.  Riding high after his recent re-edit of ‘Gold Dust’ received huge radio play, Shy is joined by both Breakage and Dismantle, as well as some yet unannounced guests.
