Boy George at St Georges Hall Liverpool Steve Levine sessions review

Boy George St Georges Hall Liverpool Steve Levine sessions review

Boy George at St Georges Hall Liverpool Steve Levine sessions review

Last night at St Georges Hall Liverpool saw the Steve Levine sessions as part of the Liverpool International Music Festival.

Joining Steve for the night were Tim Burgess (Charlatans), Mark King (Level 42), Bernard Butler (Suede), tropical popstress Hollie Cook, singer/songwriter Mary Epworth, and Merseyside's own Natalie McCool and of course Boy George all in the surroundings of one of the great halls draped out like a garden fate complete with a grass lawn and a white picket fence.

A two stage set up saw the attention switch from the main stage over to the side stage were Steve Levine was recording LIVE a new version of Gerry Marsdens "Ferry across the Mersey" using artists and indeed the audience itself on the recording which was available to download later for free.

Mark King kicked off the sessions with a brilliant rendition of "Sunshine of my love" which suitably showed Marks world famous bass playing off to a tee.

Mark stayed on stage throughout the sets from Natalie McCool, Mary Epworth and Hollie Cook and Tim Burgess and Bernard Butler joined the ensemble whilst Boy George had a cameo appearance during Hollie Cooks set much to the joy of the audience.

Speaking of the the headliner it was soon his chance to shine and shine he did. Backed with a full live band and dress in a camouflage outfit, George was ready to go to war and simply destroyed the night.

With songs like Knocking on Heavens door, for which he was joined on stage by Eve Gallagher and a set encompassing a mixture of blues, jazz and reggae tracks alongside his own hits such as Church of the Poisoned Mind, Karma Chameleon and Everything I own to name a few, Boy George shows he is not only a unique talent but comes across on stage as a warm, happy and friendly person and this reflects outwards into the audience. And I have admiration for any artist who can comment on the audience chatting through their set by blatantly commenting "I fucking hate it", which more artists should address as it definitely pisses me off too.

Finishing on Hara Krishna which built up into a crescendo of music and singing and bringing the house down George came on to his encore to introduce the band and to bring all the artists involved in the night, onto the stage for their final curtain call also.

The night was brilliantly thought out and the unique use of a mock up studio from Steve Levine in between was not only entertaining but a small insight into the working of making a record and what goes on to do so. LIMF have really outdone themselves this year with this event and with the Sefton park free gigs coming up over the bank holiday weekend and the Ella Eyre gig at camp and furnace a week earlier ,  I can safely say they have achieved something unique and that the memory of the old Matthew street festival days have long been forgotten.

Liverpool International music festival hits right note for 2014

Liverpool International music festival 2014

Liverpool International music festival hits right note for 2014

THE Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF) returns in August with some of the biggest names in the music industry.

More than 200 acts representing 20 countries will wow audiences with around 150 hours of live music throughout the event, which runs from Friday 15 until Saturday 31 August.

Across the sixteen days, there will be performances from Boy George, Shaggy, Tim Burgess (The Charlatans), Goldie, The Hoosiers, Kid Creole, Lemar, The Farm, John Power (Cast and La’s) and multi-Grammy nominee Marsha Ambrosius.

The August bank holiday weekend will see Sefton Park play host to LIMF Summer Jam.  It kicks off with Ian Broudie and The Lightning Seeds joining the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in a special concert hosted by Classic FM which takes place on Friday 22 August.

From Saturday to Monday, the Central Stage will have different themes: Saturday – British Invasion; Sunday – World Music; Monday – Summer Sessions with Juice FM.

As well as Central Stage there are four other music areas:

The it’s liverpool Stage with BBC Radio Merseyside will showcase the next musical trailblazers to come from Liverpool, as well as celebrate the legends of the city’s music scene.

The International Emerging Sounds Stage will host artists from around the globe who are making names for themselves with their creative and individual approach to music which is earning them deserved world-wide recognition.

The LIMF Bandstand will give a platform to local unsigned talent ranging from bands and soloists, covering a variety of musical genres.

The LIMF Academy will showcase fifteen of the region’s hottest up and coming young acts.

One of the key aims of this year is to create never before seen or heard music performances via a series of LIMF Commissions. LIMF has engaged a number of celebrated artistic directors to work with various artists from different musical backgrounds and genres to create music magic under the theme of World Firsts By Collaboration. This will see four very special commissions by LIMF, all of which will be ticketed events:

Steve Levine’s Assembly Point Sessions – Taking place on 21 August at St George’s Hall, the award winning producer will direct a number of solo artists along with an all-star band in a unique collaboration. To date, collaborators include Tim Burgess, Pete Wylie and Bernard Butler. The evening will also see a full headline set from Boy George.

Migration Music – The Everyman will play host to Liverpool’s Sense of Sound choir which will collaborate with internationally renowned beatboxer Shlomo, in a voice only performance which invites the audience to travel through significant moments in music history.  This will take place on 28 and 29 August.

You Are Here – Symbolically representing the countries that made up the Triple Entente (the United Kingdom, France and Russia), You Are Here will consist of musicians exploring what home means to them. Created by the force behind SevenStreets, David Lloyd, the piece will premiere at LIMF on 23 August in Sefton Park’s Palm House.

Minor Characters – Music manager Chris Bye and The Quietus, one of the most respected music and culture websites in the world, will bring together six artists to create an original body of work which will be released digitally through The Quietus label. Participants include GIT Award 2014 winner Forest Sword, as well as the likes of East India Youth and Luke Abbott. It will take place at The Kazimier on Friday 29 August.

Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, said: “We were overwhelmed by the response to the inaugural LIMF last year, and today, people still tell me that the Sefton Park gigs were the highlight of their summer.

There’s more of a focus on the park this year, and without a doubt, it will be the place to be during the August bank holiday for all the family.

The diverse music on offer ranges from internationally renowned artists through to home grown talent and some of the best bands paying tribute to iconic acts

There aren’t many other cities in the UK which put on hours and hours of high quality live music – the majority of which is completely free.

“As we saw in 2013, LIMF is a fresh approach to music festivals and I’m positive this year will be just as impressive and shine a spotlight on Liverpool’s music credentials.”

LIMF’s Music Curator, Yaw Owusu, said: “This year is all about progression. LIMF Summer Jam's line up is really strong and with the addition of the International Emerging Stage and the Academy area, I know we are raising the bar - and we haven't even finished the line-ups yet.

"The LIMF Commissions are all about us creating and showcasing original music works and performances that have never been seen anywhere in the world before. I'm really excited about this element and overwhelmed with the calibre of musicians and artistic directors involved so far.”

Musician Ian Broudie said: “I’m delighted to be playing at Liverpool International Music Festival this year. The combination of the band and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in Sefton Park on a sunny August evening should make for a magical event.”

To launch LIMF 2014, local artist Marc Lewis, has created a special mural on giant letters at St George’s Hall. The finishing touches will be made at 10am on Thursday 15 May, revealing some of the line-up.

Marc said: “I am incredibly excited to be involved with the launch of LIMF.
“Last year's I was lucky enough to contribute a three-piece mural painting to the LIMF Pop-Up Art Gallery which featured many of the acts involved. Since then we have discussed the possibilities of doing a much larger mural, which the public could come along and watch unfold in real time.
“There has always been such a strong connection between music and art particularly here in Liverpool and my hope is that this project will engage the public whilst at the same time inspiring the next generation of artists and musicians from this great city.”

Highlights of this year’s festival:

Thursday 21 August
Grammy winning producer Steve Levine will artistically direct the project that will see a number of top British music artists use traditional and new technology to collaborate together for an exclusive performance at the historic St George’s Hall. Kendal Calling 2013 announce Primal Scream, The Charlatans, Basement Jaxx

Kendal Calling 2013

Kendal Calling 2013 announce Primal Scream, The Charlatans, Basement Jaxx

Kendal Calling today announces an incredible first crop of artists to perform at the 8th edition of this multi award winning Lake District festival.  Situated in one of the most beautiful locations
in the UK, Kendal Calling has established a reputation as one of the most forward thinking festivals in the country, combing fantastic music, great food, award winning ales and good times in the outstanding surroundings of the Lake District.

Basement Jaxx are the ultimate party act who have paid their dues on the dance music circuit and have got the back catalogue to prove it.  This dance act don’t hide behind a screen of visuals, they put on and epic and extravagant performance that is more carnival than live show and showcases their mix of latin, hip hop and dancehall infused house music to devastating effect on tracks like Where’s Your Head At, Red Alert, Jus 1 Kiss, Bingo Bango, Romeo, Rendez Vu and Oh My Gosh.  Basement Jaxx will close the first night in stunning fashion.

Last year Tim Burgess from The Charlatans hosted the Tim Peaks Diner at Kendal Calling, a virtual diner that was one of the highlights of the festival and this year he’s bringing the rest of
his band with him for a Saturday night headline slot.  The Charlatans are one of the great British bands of the last 25 years and have melded rock, psychedelia, funk and dance rhythms over
11 albums since their inception in 1989.  This is a band who have always refused to stand still and this northern festival exclusive is likely to feature classics such as The Only One I Know,
Weirdo, Just When You’re Thinking Things Over, One To Another
, Then and many more.

Primal Scream
are arguably the greatest rock n’ roll band of the last 30 years mixing indie, alternative rock, psychedelia and acid house to mesmerising effect.  Their live sets are euphoric affairs featuring classics  such as Higher Than The Sun, Loaded, Country Girl, Rocks and Come Together and Bobby Gillespie and the boys are set to bring their rock n’ roll swagger to the Lakes.  Their new album More Light is released in May and Kendal Calling will unite to the classic anthems of a genuinely legendary band.

Kendal Calling is about much more than just the headliners and its hugely eclectic line ups have drawn much critical acclaim from festival goers, artists and media alike.

Frontman John Bramwell’s poetic one liners and twisted, witty lyrics punctuate I Am Kloot’s deceptively understated songs and their gritty but pretty symphonies about life, love and alcoho
l are timeless. Northern Irish stalwarts Ash make a welcome return after their epic headline slot back in 2009 and will whip up the crowd with a set of exemplary alternative rock.  Fake Blood
aka DJ Touche is an enormous presence on the house and electro scene and his set will have the Kendal Calling crowd dancing long into the night.

The Lightning Seeds genius song writing helped reshape the face of British pop music and the band will perform a rare acoustic set.  Kendal Calling are delighted to welcome back local
Lake District heroes British Sea Power with a special show for their 10th anniversary while Mystery Jets exhibit the quintessentially English, crowd pleasing pop of their ‘Radlands’ album.

Radio 1 new boy and part of the Numbers collective, Jackmaster will bring 'eclectic electrics' from techno and house to disco and dubstep and Dub Pistols bass shuddering dub and big beatwill be in full effect with a live performnce and DJ set too.

Mr Scruff is a national treasure and his sets incorporate soul, funk, hip-hop, jazz, reggae, latin, african, ska, disco, house, funk, breaks, soundtracks and loads more.  Hip-hop and dubstep
comes courtesy of Foreign Beggars and drum & bass overlord Roni Size will keep the crowd jumping while best dressed man in music Willy Moon brings the music of Bo Diddley and
Buddy Holly kicking and screaming into the present.

The crystalline leftfield pop of Manchester based Dutch Uncles, the lustful hooks and sleazy charm of rapidly exploding The 1975 and the epic, melodic rock of Kodaline are must see acts
at Kendal Calling.

Other festival confirmations include Wave Machines, Oneman, Tricka Technology (Krafty Kuts V's A.Skillz), Bondax, Loadstar, Theme Park, Public Service Broadcasting, Monsta, Slamboree, Artwork, The 1975, Drenge, Dynamite MC, Grooverider, Dismantle, Walter Ego, Sons and Lovers, Chunky, Tonn Piper, Wind Up Birds, The Mispers, Flight of Arrows, Father Funk, Calling All Astronauts and Genre Sluts.

100's more acts to be announced, as well as areas, attractions and other aspects of the festival including the fancy dress theme.

Last year Kendal Calling sold out a remarkable seven weeks in advance of the show and the festival has sold out in each of its seven previous years.  Despite adding a number of
new developments for 2013 organisers have kept the event to the same capacity as last year protecting the festivals intimate feel and attention to detail for which it is renowned.

Watch out for many more Kendal Calling announcements over the forthcoming months as the festival continues to provide the perfect backdrop for a weekend of musical merriment in the fields.

V festival 2012 - Weston Park Sunday Review

V festival 2012

V festival 2012 - Weston Park Sunday Review

Day two of V festival brought a wet start to the Weston Park site but by the time we came to watch Emeli Sande the rain had all but stopped. Emeli’s strong female vocals bouncing all around the area and sparking the very large crowd  to sing along to her hit “Next to me” amongst other songs in her set. We wandered around to watch Tim Burgess, sporting a fetching Dappy style hat which underneath saw a thick head of bright blonde hair, sang the back catalogue of The Charlatans hits to a wet but very jubilant crowd.

Moving over to watch Marlon Roudette play the undercover stage, we were greeted with a wonderful musician and vocalist. A former member of the band “Mattafix”, Marlon may have not drawn a huge crowd, but he certainly won over the crowd that was there. His vocals are smooth, clear and certainly unique. He doesn’t get to play much in the UK but on the strength of this set, I’d definitely like to see more of this young man.

On the 4 music stage, Tinie Tempah was rocking the crowds but we decided to go see Newton Faulkner, mainly to see what all the fuss about him is. With his long dreads and wonderful guitar playing I can see the attraction although I found the covers he played, detracted from his own music, and found myself wanting him to just do his own material which I found far superior. But on seeing him play I can definitely see the attraction and although I haven’t heard much of his recorded stuff I have the feeling that the live version is far superior.

With so much going on, its hard to see everything at V festival, but we managed to briefly catch some of Keane, with lead singer, Alex Ebert, looking a lot thinner than when I last remembered due to, as a woman next to me in the crowd proceeded to inform me, his slim fast diet. We also managed to catch a few numbers by Sub Focus. Sounding a lot like Pendulum, their amazing light show was matched with some high energy music but they should have been far further up the bill to really draw the crowds.

Tim Minchin, was starting his set at the same time as Sub Focus, so we shot across to see some of his set. We had caught him previously at Rockness were he had played solo. This time around he was joined on stage by a band. This, for me, took away a lot of the uniqueness and most of the time, drowned out Tim’s vocals and did nothing to add to the set itself.

Finally for us, we had the one and only Noel Gallagher to witness. With his high flying birds, this was a highly anticipated set and one he didn’t let anyone down on. Mixing his new stuff with Oasis material worked a treat, although as most of his new work is already full of sing-a-long and chant lyrics, it would be easier just to do a 30-45 min set of just that alone. But once again, hearing the crowd sing along to Noel’s lyrics was truly an experience I had missed since the split of Oasis and going by the reaction to songs like “Little by little” and “Supersonic”, I’m guessing most of the audience had to. Finishing on the inevitable “Don’t look back in anger” Noel rounded off a faultless set.

My Tiger My Timing - 6 Music's Album of the Day

My Tiger My Timing

My Tiger My Timing - 6 Music's Album of the Day

On the week of its release 6 Music are honouring what is being hailed by many critics as the soundtrack to summer (when the sun is out that is) and making My Tiger My Timing's debut album 'Celeste' 'Album of the Day', with a whole host of Twitterers sharing their love of the record - with one Tim Burgess tweeting that it "sounded great".

'Celeste' is an album that can be - without hyperbole - described as anticipated, with a hotly on the front. After self releasing singles D.I.Y style through their label Snakes and Ladders, My Tiger My Timing had knocked up  - pre-album - press pieces in The Observer (One to Watch), NME, Clash, Dazed and Confused, plays on Radio 1, slots at Glastonbury, tours with contemporaries such as Metronomy as well as European headline tours -  and a whole lot more.

The album - for those not tuning into 6 Music today - is an electro-pop gem where every track could be lifted as a lead single, it's the sound of summer, but one with the perfect balance, for its new-wave darker undercurrent keeps it just the right side of sweetly-poppy with its reggae influenced base-lines and front-woman Anna Vincent's sugary vocals telling tales of things less savoury.

For those that missed it, Clash streamed the full album last week, ahead of its release. Stream it here now: via the band's Soundcloud page: http://soundcloud.com/mytigermytiming/sets/mastered-album/s-NHzli
Some praise for 'Celeste' and My Tiger My Timing:

“A debut that might well become people’s perfect July soundtrack”  - BBC Music
“(An) accomplished, and thoroughly engaging debut album” - Shout 4 Music
“The album oozes warmth throughout, melding shimmering guitars and lush keyboard tones with the vocal equivalent of a light summer breeze.”  -Artrocker
"Celeste sounds like a greatest hits album" - 405
"('Celeste') speaks of  it speaks of making memories and living in the moment" - The Line of Best Fit
The sun is shining, and this couldn’t be a better soundtrack” - This Is Fake D.I.Y
“Deliciously upbeat and groove-laden post-punk" The Guardian
“Alternative pop with a dark heart that’s bursting with desire” Clash
“Tribal electro like a south London Gang Gang Dance” NME
“On the verge of blowing up in both the UK and abroad” CMJ
“Tinkering with the trappings of 21st century post-punk” Drowned In Sound
"Sounding great, they never fail to deliver” - John Kennedy XFM
“Classic. Perfect. Pop” Artrocker
