The GIT Award 2012 - Shortlisted Artists Revealed

THE GIT AWARD 2012

SHORTLISTED ARTISTS REVEALED AHEAD OF SHOWCASE EVENING AT LEAF ON FRIDAY APRIL 27

It has been a significant year for musical creativity and diversity on Merseyside and this has been confirmed by the 12 acts shortlisted for the inaugural GIT Award 2012.

The GIT Award, named after Liverpool music blog Getintothis and dubbed by the national music press as the Scouse Mercury Prize, celebrates the finest new recordings in the last 12 months on Merseyside.

Since its launch at Liverpool Music Week’s closing party in November 2011 up until the closing date at the end of February 2012, the GIT Award received more than 380 entries.  The shortlist was then decided by a judging panel comprising top names from Liverpool Football Club, NME, Vice Magazine, The Quietus and The Guardian alongside the cornerstones of the region's music scene – Getintothis, Bido Lito Magazine, Waxxx and EVOL.

The overall winner will be announced at The GIT Award 2012 Show on Friday April 27 at Leaf on Bold Street, where each of the shortlisted artists is expected to perform while being filmed exclusively by Mocha and Liverpool Football Club TV. Journalist and Goldblade musician John Robb will host the evening.

The GIT Award 2012 shortlist is:

Bang On
Ex-Easter Island Head
Forest Swords
Loved Ones
Miss Stylie
Mugstar
Outfit
Ninetails
Bill Ryder-Jones
Stealing Sheep
The Tea Street Band
Esco Williams

GIT Award founder and chair of judges, Peter Guy, said: “The first GIT Award shortlist highlights the wealth of new musical talent within Merseyside. The artists are ambitious and inventive, emotional and passionate, funny and profound. They evoke a sense of time and place, providing a wonderful snapshot of Merseyside’s varied sonic landscape proving why Liverpool is still the centre of the music universe.”

The winner will receive an incredible prize which includes recording time at Liverpool’s Sandhills Studio and a showcase at this year’s Liverpool Sound City and Liverpool Music Week. The winners will also play a gig at Vice Magazine’s London bar The Old Blue Last, as well as having a promo shot by Virgin Media Shorts filmmaker of the Year nominee Ian Gamester to be screened at FACT, the city’s art house cinema and creative technologies centre.

Dave Pichilingi, CEO Liverpool Sound City, said: “Sound City has always championed the vast pool of talent from Liverpool, and having worked with Getintothis since our formation in 2007, the GIT Award represents the perfect showcase to celebrate new music.”

Kevin McManus, former NME journalist and director at Liverpool Vision, said: "We’re really happy to support the GIT Award. Liverpool has a worldwide reputation for its creativity and continuing to produce some of the UK’s best music and most innovative music businesses. The GIT Award gives new talent an important platform and provides well deserved recognition for new acts breaking through."

Matt Wilkinson, NME radar editor, said: “I’m really excited to be on the panel for the GIT Award. Liverpool and its surrounding areas are offering up some of the most exciting and diverse music around at present. I can't wait to get stuck into the shortlist and find a winner.”

Radio City Live review @ Liverpool's Echo Arena

Radio City Live christmas bash review at Liverpool's Echo Arena

Surrounded by twinkling fairy wings, various flashing multi coloured bands, necklaces and doodle boppers and a whole lot of squealing girls, you know it's that time of year again. No, not the tinsel drinkers on their obligatory once a year night out but Radio City 96.7's musical extravaganza at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, and it has to be said that this year looked like it was going to blow the rest away. With every act on stage having had at least one number one hit single in the last year.

The night kicked off with Jason Derulo, with full band and backing dancers on stage to give a slick polished, extremely energetic and at times Michael Jacksonesque performance, complete with many crotch grabbing moments, either that or his leather pants were chaffing, but that didn't stop the crowd from cheering and dancing along to his hits, including "Whatcha Say" and "Fight for You".

Following on was Tinchy Stryder but I have to say as an overall performance, he seemed to be lacking in energy and his DJ had more stage presence during the first track. His pal Dappy, joined him on stage and the two of them bounced around the stage pretty happily although vocally, it could have been stronger.

Pixie Lott and Ed Sheeran though provided some of the best vocal performances of the night for me, with Pixie performing an acoustic set, she cheekily and playfully made her way through a few of her most known number including, "Mama Do" and "All About Tonight" and even the 3 bored young teenage lads in front of me who had spent most of the night playing on games or BBM their friends sat up and took notice, whether that was to do with her performance or just her, we'll never know . I have to admit that Pixie Lott has one hell of a voice and a fantastic vocal range and as for Ed Sheerin, I've always been swayed away from listening to him as he is yet another Radio One prodigy but I can say with all honesty, I am now a fan and can see why he got the biggest cheers, screams and whoops of the night, and yes even more than JLS!! With his mellow vocals, witty banter to the crowd and who can't love the fact he's named his guitar "Cyril". Ed swapped from mellow vocals to a performance Beardyman would have been proud of with "You Need Me, I Don't Need You" and only stopped when Cyril broke two strings and had to be replaced by "Nigel". He finished his set with, "A Team" but I think the crowd could have listened to him all night, and I wouldn't have minded either.

Wretch 3-2 followed with and energetic set and Matt Cardle showed how to keep a crowd happy by just singing alone on stage then followed by  The Wanted, who to be very very honest sucked massively. Vocals off key from a lot of them and their new song, "War Zone" is horrendously drab and depressing and I fear it may be around at Christmas!! I 'm definitely putting ear plugs on my Xmas list of it is as I don't think my ears drums can go through that again.

The night came to one spectacular close with JLS taking to the stage and showed all boy groups, (The Wanted take note) how it should be done. With polished dance routines, harmonious vocals and Aston's cheekiness shining through, to many girls delight judging by the squeals from some of them, they performed "Eyes Wide Shut" "Everybody In Love" and "Take a Chance" an upbeat ballad style song, which is from their new album "Jukebox". JLS also showcased their brand new single, a Christmassy little number called "Do You Feel What I Feel" complete with falling snow ended the night with "She Makes Me Wanna" which saw the entire arena covered in glitter and streamers.

So once again thanks to Radio City 96.7 for bringing us another pop fuelled night at the Echo Arena and lets hope we can all wait till 22nd July 2012 for the next one. Admittedly though this one will be hard to top.

GIT Award in Liverpool Official Launch this Friday at LMW Closing Party

SOME cities have wonderful pop music histories, some might be lucky enough to enjoy successful periods in the future, but few can confidently say, they have both.

Liverpool is one of a select bunch of cities that can. Like London, New York, Chicago, Detroit and Los Angeles, it can accurately claim to have changed the complexion of modern music.

Now, a new prize, the GIT Award (named after the popular local music blog Getintothis - www.getintothis.co.uk), is about to recognise the best of the future crop of Liverpool musicians who may go on to do what Scousers have been doing for more than half a century – changing the course of history.

As award-winning writer and Word Magazine associate editor Paul Du Noyer, author of the peerless history of the city’s pop music culture, Liverpool Wondrous Place, says, “Music is not just the heritage but the heartbeat of Liverpool.”

But, it’s not just about rock and roll and the guitar bands the city has mostly been famed for, the GIT Award will celebrate Liverpool's current rich musical diversity. From the thriving hip hop scene to its electronica artists, from its long-established country and roots community to punk, folk and metal, the GIT Award is open to all.

Peter Guy, Liverpool ECHO journalist and editor of Getintothis, says, “Think of it as the Scouse Mercury Prize - but, the only criteria being that it has a clear connection with Liverpool; ie: the record was made, produced or recorded by Liverpudlians. "Unlike the Mercurys, there will be a transparent judging panel and as many grass roots musicians won't record a full album during the course of a year, we're asking for four tracks be submitted to be eligible for entry - think of it as an old school four-track EP."

And the prize? It's a little belter. Sandhills Studio is offering a day's free recording time with a top producer, while the winners will play next year's Liverpool Sound City and Liverpool Music Week.

Vice Magazine, meanwhile, has asked Getintothis to promote an exclusive gig at their London-based bar, The Old Blue Last, featuring the winners. On top of this, film-maker Ian Gamester, who has been shortlisted for the prestigious Virgin Media Shorts film, will make the band's video promo which will be screened by Picturehouse at FACT’s boutique Box cinema for the winners and their nearest and dearest.

Further goodies from sponsors will be announced in the coming months.

The GIT Award will have an official launch at Liverpool Music Week's spectacular closing party at the Contemporary Urban Centre on November 11 with the 12 nominees announced next spring before the winner is unveiled days before Liverpool Sound City 2012 where they will feature on the Getintothis stage.

In the meantime, spread the word, The GIT Award is officially ON - musicians, bands and creative types everywhere, send your four tracks to getintothis@gmail.com or alternatively post to Peter Guy, The GIT Award, Liverpool Daily Post & ECHO, PO Box 48, Old Hall Street, Liverpool, L693EB. If you're a business and would like to get involved with the GIT Award, please email peter.guy@liverpool.com.
