The Vaccines Confirm Three DJ Dates With Propaganda

One of the UK’s biggest alternative acts, The Vaccines get behind the decks for a very special set of appearances with Propaganda this December.  2013 has been an extremely eventful year for the band including nominations for the Best Live Act at the Brit Awards, Best British Band and Best Album at the NME Awards as well as supporting bands such as Muse, The Rolling Stones and Kings of Leon and headlining their own show at London’s prestigious and enormous O2 Arena.

The band will take to the decks with Propaganda, the UK’s biggest indie night taking place in 22 cities across the UK weekly, allowing DJ’s and bands to showcase their eclectic music tastes to euphoric audiences.  Previous DJ guests have included Mumford and Sons, The Vaccines, Bloc Party, Zane Lowe and Bombay Bicycle Club.  Live performances have come from the likes of Ed Sheeran, Rizzle Kicks and Miles Kane.

After what can only be described as a whirlwind of a year for Twenty Twenty in 2011; that included being the soundtrack to a major motion picture, supporting some of the biggest artists in the world at the UK's biggest festivals and a Top 40 debut album, it’s fair to say the boys have a lot to live up to this year! However, preceding their hard-working reputation, the boys already have big things planned for 2012!

Twenty Twenty announced an 11 date UK Headline tour for May, named the ‘Twenty Twelve Tour’ with further dates added only days after the tickets went on sale!

The boys also have a new album in the pipeline. As soon their debut album ‘Small Talk’ jumped into the UK charts at Number 26 last year they hopped straight back into the studio to start working on ideas for Album 2. The pop-rocking trio are looking at a summer release!

Radio City Live review @ Liverpool's Echo Arena

Radio City Live christmas bash review at Liverpool's Echo Arena

Surrounded by twinkling fairy wings, various flashing multi coloured bands, necklaces and doodle boppers and a whole lot of squealing girls, you know it's that time of year again. No, not the tinsel drinkers on their obligatory once a year night out but Radio City 96.7's musical extravaganza at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, and it has to be said that this year looked like it was going to blow the rest away. With every act on stage having had at least one number one hit single in the last year. 

The night kicked off with Jason Derulo, with full band and backing dancers on stage to give a slick polished, extremely energetic and at times Michael Jacksonesque performance, complete with many crotch grabbing moments, either that or his leather pants were chaffing, but that didn't stop the crowd from cheering and dancing along to his hits, including "Whatcha Say" and "Fight for You".

Following on was Tinchy Stryder but I have to say as an overall performance, he seemed to be lacking in energy and his DJ had more stage presence during the first track. His pal Dappy, joined him on stage and the two of them bounced around the stage pretty happily although vocally, it could have been stronger.

Pixie Lott and Ed Sheeran though provided some of the best vocal performances of the night for me, with Pixie performing an acoustic set, she cheekily and playfully made her way through a few of her most known number including, "Mama Do" and "All About Tonight" and even the 3 bored young teenage lads in front of me who had spent most of the night playing on games or BBM their friends sat up and took notice, whether that was to do with her performance or just her, we'll never know . I have to admit that Pixie Lott has one hell of a voice and a fantastic vocal range and as for Ed Sheerin, I've always been swayed away from listening to him as he is yet another Radio One prodigy but I can say with all honesty, I am now a fan and can see why he got the biggest cheers, screams and whoops of the night, and yes even more than JLS!! With his mellow vocals, witty banter to the crowd and who can't love the fact he's named his guitar "Cyril". Ed swapped from mellow vocals to a performance Beardyman would have been proud of with "You Need Me, I Don't Need You" and only stopped when Cyril broke two strings and had to be replaced by "Nigel". He finished his set with, "A Team" but I think the crowd could have listened to him all night, and I wouldn't have minded either.

Wretch 3-2 followed with and energetic set and Matt Cardle showed how to keep a crowd happy by just singing alone on stage then followed by  The Wanted, who to be very very honest sucked massively. Vocals off key from a lot of them and their new song, "War Zone" is horrendously drab and depressing and I fear it may be around at Christmas!! I 'm definitely putting ear plugs on my Xmas list of it is as I don't think my ears drums can go through that again.

The night came to one spectacular close with JLS taking to the stage and showed all boy groups, (The Wanted take note) how it should be done. With polished dance routines, harmonious vocals and Aston's cheekiness shining through, to many girls delight judging by the squeals from some of them, they performed "Eyes Wide Shut" "Everybody In Love" and "Take a Chance" an upbeat ballad style song, which is from their new album "Jukebox". JLS also showcased their brand new single, a Christmassy little number called "Do You Feel What I Feel" complete with falling snow ended the night with "She Makes Me Wanna" which saw the entire arena covered in glitter and streamers.

So once again thanks to Radio City 96.7 for bringing us another pop fuelled night at the Echo Arena and lets hope we can all wait till 22nd July 2012 for the next one. Admittedly though this one will be hard to top.

A special aftershow billed as Ian McNabb and Friends Christmas Show will take place on Saturday 10 December at Eric’s on Mathew Street. Entry is free to ticket holders from the Friday and Saturday theatre shows or £5 on door for non ticket holders. From 10 pm till 2 am.

The two concerts will consist of 25 songs each night with no two songs performed twice.  Ian has dug deep into his back catalogue to unearth some Icicle Works classics in addition to freshly minted gems and songs from his extensive back catalogue which will be presented in both electric and acoustic arrangements. 

Ian says “I’m really looking forward to playing these shows.  The annual Christmas show is always a big thrill for me to do but this year is extra special as the venue is on the site of my old school, which will bring back quite a few memories.

These shows should be really special as I’ve dug deep into the archives to find some stuff that I haven’t played for a long time, if ever.  There will be the usual standards in there too and possibly a couple of tracks from the album that I’m currently working on at the moment.”

Ian McNabb is one of the finest singer-songwriters Britain has produced. Emerging from the 1980’s Liverpool music scene, Ian started a musical journey as songwriter, lead singer and guitar player with The Icicle Works which has taken on many twists and turns.  The initial run of hit singles with The Icicle Works (Love Is A Wonderful Colour, Birds Fly, When It All Comes Down, Evangeline, Understanding Jane, Little Girl Lost) has been followed by a distinguished and critically acclaimed solo career, including a Mercury Prize Nomination for the 1994 album ‘Head Like A Rock’ which was recorded with Neil Young’s band ‘Crazy Horse’.

Levellers to support The Wonder Stuff O2 Academy Birmingham

Following The Wonder Stuff’s support on their headline tour earlier this year, Levellers confirm that they are to return the favour and are announced as special guests for the band’s forthcoming show at O₂ Academy Birmingham on Thursday 15^th December.  

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of its original release, The Wonder Stuff will perform their album “Never Loved Elvis”, in its entirety, at just two special shows, Birmingham and also at London’s O₂ Shepherds Bush Empire on Friday 16th December. 

Following the announcement, The Wonder Stuff’s frontman, Miles Hunt said; “Having had a wonderful time on the road earlier this year as the special guests of Levellers, on their 'Levelling The Land' tour, we are happy to announce that they are returning the favour and will be joining The Wonder Stuff at our O₂ Academy Birmingham show, celebrating the 20th anniversary of our 'Never Loved Elvis' album. It's gonna be a beautiful night!”

“Never Loved Elvis” was the band’s third album, released in 1991. It produced four hit singles, including ‘Welcome To The Cheap Seats’ featuring Kirsty MacColl, ‘Caught In My Shadow’, Sleep Alone and the band’s first top 5 hit with ‘The Size Of A Cow’. 

That same year, The Wonder Stuff staged their very own open-air event, The Big Day Out, to coincide with the album’s release at Walsall’s 22,000 capacity Bescot Stadium. The event's name was inspired by hit television show ‘Vic Reeves’ Big Night Out’ and Vic Reeves himself compered the day’s events. Vic would later ask the band to be his backing band on 'Dizzy', a track he was recording for an album that he planned to release later in the year - upon its release in October 1991, the track reached Number 1 in the Official UK Singles Charts.

Cosmic jazz composer, keyboardist, bandleader and philosopher Sun Ra was one of the most important figures in 60's avante garde jazz along with artists such as Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, and Albert Ayler. Claiming that he was of the "Angel Race" and not from Earth, but from Saturn, Sun Ra developed a complex persona of "cosmic" philosophies and lyrical poetry that made him a pioneer of Afrofuturism. He abandoned his birth name and took on the name and persona of Sun Ra (Ra being the ancient Egyptian God of the Sun).

 

From the mid-1950s to when he left the planet in 1993, Sun Ra led "The Arkestra", an ensemble with an ever-changing lineup. Sun Ra's music ranged from keyboard solos to big bands of over 30 musicians. His music touched on virtually the entire history of jazz, from ragtime to swing music, from bebop to free jazz. He was also a pioneer of electronic music, space music, and free improvisation, and was one of the first musicians, regardless of genre, to make extensive use of electronic keyboards.

 

After Sun Ra left the planet, the Arkestra was led by tenor saxophonist John Gilmore. Following Gilmore's death in 1995, the group has performed under the direction of internationally critically acclaimed alto saxophonist Marshall Allen. Marshall Allen has now given 52 years of uninterrupted dedicated service to the Sun Ra Arkestra. He continues to move the Arkestra forward as a spiritual band, maintaining the discipline centered on the study, research, and further development of Sun Ra's precepts. Along with leading the Arkestra, Marshall plays the alto saxophone, flute, clarinet, oboe, kora, and EVI (Electronic Valve Instrument). He is internationally recognised as the premier avant-garde saxophonist on the planet.

This show has been rescheduled from December 9th and is an exclusive Northern England concert.

Deck yourself  with boughs of holly, tinsel, glitter and anything else that sparkles and settle in for a warm winter’s night, Orb Events is delighted to present the first ever  Camp as Christmas festive variety event on Sat 17 December at newly opened Liverpool venue The Dome, Renshaw Street, Liverpool.

This exciting festive variety show is the first fundraiser for Liverpool Pride 2012. The event will be the first of many that are planned as part of the festivals 20102 fundraising campaign, designed with the aim to keep the festival free for all to enjoy.  More details of Liverpool Pride 2012 and its fundraising campaign will be announced in due course.

With more glitter in its wand than fairy godmother could ever imagine, this camptabulous Christmas spectacular will feature amazing live performances, stalls, games and all the XMAS Factor you can handle.  

Santa has come early and left a sack filled to the brim with a winter wonder lusting line up of entertainment wrapped up in a big shiny bow for the audience to enjoy.  The X-Factor’s, Diva Fever top the (Christmas) list, which also includes Liverpool’s own Adam Lyons and AJ Dance in addition to  Pride favourites  FTW,  Judy and Liza’s Emma Dears, and all girl A-Cappella group Barbie Shop as well as Kaz and Britney, who will perform special excerpts from their brand new production ‘Scottie Road The Musical.’  The audience will also have the opportunity to see Liverpool’s Drag Queens as they’ve never seen them before as well as witnessing a few surprise acts on the night.

The hosts for the evening will be the uniquely fabulous and multi-talented Rikki Beadle Blair (Liverpool Vogue Balls & C4’s Metrosexuality) whose impressive portfolio of work ranges from acting and writing to aerobics instructing, and the one and only Ms Dorreen Kumkwik who promise to keep the jokes flowing, the acts rollin’ and the audience wanting more.

The audience is invited to mix n mingle before the show with a complementary cocktail and banter with pre-show hosts and ‘usherettes’ for the evening Kandi Kane, Charlene O’Neil and Disney Dixon who will get the audience into the festive spirit, with songs from Liverpool’s LGBT choir and VJing from Sandi Hughes, who will also show her projections 'Gayzin Roots n Queerwings', in honour of the people who have created a sense of specialness in Liverpool's gay community. There will also be a number of stalls, games, food and drink to enjoy. The bars will also remain open after the show, when the stage will become a dance floor, complete with DJ, for the audience to stay and soak up the atmosphere or dance the night away, Camp as Christmas style.

If that wasn’t enough, once the party at The Dome is over, hop on your magic carpet, bean stalk, pumpkin carriage or any other pantomime method of transport you can find and get yourself over to the Stanley Quarter to dance the night away in all of the bars and clubs you know and love.

George Clinton has been one of the greatest innovators of urban based soul, rock and funk over the last forty years, and is set to perform at the recently refurbished HMV Ritz club in Manchester on Thursday, 1st December 2011.

Formed in 1968 Funkadelic carried the torch for George's creative output until 1972 when, in a stroke of genius, George renamed the band Parliament and signed them to Casablanca Records, while Funkadelic signed with Warner Brothers in 1976. Clinton now had two powerhouse bands signed to two different labels. With the growth of funk as a vibrant musical force, George was churning out landmark hits with both acts. Parliament was hitting with dance floor jams like Tear the Roof Off the Sucker (Give Up the Funk), Aqua Boogie, Flashlight, and Bop Gun. Meanwhile, Funakdelic was also hitting hard with anthemic funk jams like (Not Just) Knee Deep and One Nation Under A Groove.

This is the only UK date outside London and an extremely rare club performance for one of the godfathers of funk.

12 Dirty Bullets announce UK tour December 2011

Friday 21st October:As it approaches twenty five years since their breakthrough album ‘In the Dynamite Jet saloon’, The Dogs D’Amour will make a return to the live arena for five UK shows this December. Now legendary, Dogs D'Amour gigs are surrounded by tales of debauchery and destruction, unadulterated rock 'n' roll antics and excesses.  

 

Fronted by the inimitable Tyla, The Dogs D'Amour were unleashed onto an unsuspecting and somewhat mediocre UK music scene during the mid 1980s. With their ramshackle pirate-meets-Dickens style they pioneered a unique mixture of glam-punk and stonesy rock 'n' roll. They sang songs about sweet sorrows and told torrid tales of destruction - all perpetuated by their ‘do-or-die’ attitude. Their music and style stood out from the rest, as did their iconic artwork created by frontman Tyla. His quirky illustrations of mischievous rock n’ rollers up to no good adorned the bands album covers and sleeves.

 

The Dogs D’Amour played their debut gig in London, England on April 12th 1983. They had UK chart success with ‘Satellite Kid’, peaking in at Number 26, as well as several other Top 40 singles and albums. From 1994 Tyla focused on his demanding solo career and in 2000, The Dogs release ‘Happy Ever After’, and in 2002 the band opened for Alice Cooper on his European tour. In 2005 Warner Brothers release a best of ‘Heart Shaped Skulls’ featuring new artwork and liner notes from Tyla, plus all their promo videos on a DVD bonus disc. 2006 Tyla tours the Dogs in UK and Europe  for over 100 dates releasing a live DVD/CD of the shows titled ‘Unleashed’ whilst also maintaining a solo career which includes  well received Art Exhibitions in Europe and an extensive 6 month solo tour of the USA in 2007.

 

And now, 2011, in between all the Dogs activity, Tyla has managed to release an impressive 18 solo albums to date and has recently re-recorded ‘In the Dynamite Jet saloon’ for its 25^th Anniversary. He is also set to release his latest solo album ‘Quinguaginta’ marking his 50^th year on this earth. In true Tyla style the album is an eclectic mix of songs about real life, heart ache, tragedy and true love and a wonderful collection of soul searching anthems from a man who has never been afraid to put his heart out on the line.

Derby band Son Of Eagle have built up quite the local following and although well-known throughout the British musosphere, they’re staying true to their roots and curating a special event at the historical Derby Guildhall Theatre on Friday 2^nd December.

 

Son Of Eagle are indeed a band of humble origin, having grown organically since its dawn in Ben Edmonds’ bedroom. They’ve built up quite the local following with their beautiful heartfelt melodies and putting on their own Derby show is the perfect fit in the jigsaw. The classic and prestigious Guildhall which has had an unusual past has now come to be used as a theatre.

 

Supporting Son Of Eagle at their foray into events are Boat To Row and The Fontana Instincts, with MORE ACTS TO BE ANNOUNCED SOON.

Boat To Row
Folk collective Boat to Row, Captained by Michael King have cast off as a five piece, coupling a rare sense of genuine ease in each other’s musical company with a fresh, energetic sound. Boat to Row have navigated the shores of the UK this past year, gracing stages at Dot-to-Dot, Truck, Wood, Moseley Folk and Gloucester Underground Festivals as well as supporting the likes of Willy Mason, The Acorn, Johnny Flynn and Slow Club with their warmth.

 

The Fontana Instincts
Fronted by Derby singer songwriter Tom Campbell, The Fontana Instincts initially formed to be Campbells studio backing band. The Instincts reformed in July 2010 to play a handful of gigs and have been going since. Although combining various genres in their songs, an alternative country rock band might describe them best although their experimental, psychedelic live shows are much fun: they often improvise and perform spontaneous jams in-between the songs in their set.

Finley Quaye to play Eric's Liverpool 9th December

The son of jazz musician Cab Kaye the brother of prominent guitar sideman guitarist, Caleb Quaye and jazz musician Terri Quaye, Finley Quaye grew up in a house in Edinburgh surrounded by music. His nephew is Tricky and his godfather was Duke Ellington.

Finley Quaye could definitely have relied on nepotism to get himself a recording contract. Fortunately, his sweet voice and feel for a soul groove were the leading indicators in his signing to the Haiku label.

When Finley Quaye burst onto the British Music scene in 1997 his debut album Maverick A Strike quickly established him as one of the few truly innovative artists around. The album went gold less than three weeks later, providing hits such as Sunday Shining, Even After All and the much lauded Ultra Stimulation EP, Maverick was a groundbreaking record that defined the summer of 1997 and beyond, winning Finley a BRIT for Best Male Artist in '98 and a Mobo Award for best reggae act in '97.

After collaborating with A Guy Called Gerald and becoming friends with Iggy Pop, Quaye recorded his debut album, Maverick A Strike, and released it in 1997. He then began recording vocals for Tricky's third album Angels With Dirty Faces. Four years after his critically acclaimed debut, Quaye resurfaced with Vanguard; a new outlook and musical visions were well rounded and a maturation marked the result. Much More Than Much Love followed in 2004.
