The Vaccines Confirm Three DJ Dates With Propaganda

One of the UK’s biggest alternative acts, The Vaccines get behind the decks for a very special set of appearances with Propaganda this December.  2013 has been an extremely eventful year for the band including nominations for the Best Live Act at the Brit Awards, Best British Band and Best Album at the NME Awards as well as supporting bands such as Muse, The Rolling Stones and Kings of Leon and headlining their own show at London’s prestigious and enormous O2 Arena.

The band will take to the decks with Propaganda, the UK’s biggest indie night taking place in 22 cities across the UK weekly, allowing DJ’s and bands to showcase their eclectic music tastes to euphoric audiences.  Previous DJ guests have included Mumford and Sons, The Vaccines, Bloc Party, Zane Lowe and Bombay Bicycle Club.  Live performances have come from the likes of Ed Sheeran, Rizzle Kicks and Miles Kane.

Janice Long to judge at Liverpool Music Awards

One of the UK’s most accomplished and experienced broadcasters, Liverpool born Janice Long, is the latest judge to sign up at the first ever Liverpool Music Awards, which takes place this November.

"I am really excited to be one of the judges for the Liverpool Music Awards. The city has been at the forefront of the music scene for over 60 years and has consistently produced amazing talent” says Janice Long.

The respected panel also includes founder of LIPA, Mark Featherstone-Witty, programme director for the MA in music industry studies at the University of Liverpool Dr Mike Jones, Simon Glinn, executive director of Liverpool Philharmonic Hall & Events, Liverpool Echo music writer Jade Wright, BBC Radio Merseyside's Dave Monks, Craig G Pennington, editor and publisher of music magazine Bido Lito! More names are to be announced in coming weeks.

In one of those careers completely powered by a passion for music. Janice’s life has been full of amazing memories, legendary gigs and classic moments as a radio and TV host. But because BBC Radio 2’s much-loved late night presenter doesn't shout it from the rooftops, it’s a bit too easy to forget just how many bands and artists she’s been first on the scene with, eager to present them with a national platform. The list of artists she’s championed is distinguished indeed, from Frankie Goes To Hollywood to Amy Winehouse and beyond.

It also says a lot about Janice that the only club she’s ever been a member of was Eric’s, the famous Liverpool nightspot that helped launch so many new wave artists. “I saw loads of gigs there, then I used to go to the Warehouse and see bands five nights a week, while I was working at Radio Merseyside. “This was the end of the ’70s and start of the ’80s, punk had happened, it was very, very exciting, and there were clubs reflecting that, so much so that when I joined Radio Merseyside I suggested they do a programme that covered the scene that was going on. I just wanted to produce it, but they said, “Nobody knows what you’re talking about,” so you do it. That’s when I started doing sessions on radio. I remember going to see Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s first gig at Mr. Pickwick’s in Liverpool. They were just astonishing, everyone was blown away.”

Late in 1982, her own big break arrived. “I got offered the job at Radio 1, because they’d heard about the show, and I was fortunate enough then to be able to start there doing Saturday nights, 7.30 till 10, in Manchester, and they let me do sessions.” A little later, she would host Radio 1’s early evening show four nights a week. With the evangelistic enthusiasm that’s still her trademark, Janice would lobby labels and publishers to sign Frankie. As the Liverpool scene developed, she would also champion the likes of OMD, The Mighty Wah!, China Crisis and Echo & the Bunnymen.

Kate's Lawler's surprise DJ set at Ocean Beach Club

In what will no doubt not be the first celebrity guest appearance at Ocean Beach Club this summer, Friday night saw UK model and TV presenter Kate Lawler get behind the decks  of the new San Antonio venue in her facet as DJ. First woman to win the coveted Big Brother title in the reality show of the same name, Lawler's spontaneous set took guests by surprise- in a very good way!

Ocean Beach Club, situated on the beach of S'Arenal in San Antonio Bay, is the island's newest addition, 6000sq.m of fun in the sun, the 600sq.m swimming pool the jewel in the venue's crown.

Damien Hirst creates four logo designs to island DJ, ANTZ

The designs will form part of a fundraising campaign by Antz for local cancer charity in association with Groucho Club

In a total first of its kind in the music world, internationally renowned English artist, entrepreneur and art collector Damien Hirst has designed a brand new logo for island DJ, ANTZ. To be more accurate, Hirst has designed no less than four (4!) logos for the DJ, each one straight from the depths of the contemporary artist’s actual brain! The final favourite of the four logos to be selected for Antz’ official logo has yet to be decided – not an easy choice, one might imagine.

The Brit artist, famous for a series of artworks in which dead animals (including a shark, a sheep and a cow) are preserved and often, dissected, didn’t have to get out the formaldehyde in the case of the Antz artwork though- his inspiration this time one man who is very much alive...

As an aside, Hirst has produced his Antz work whilst a retrospective exhibition of his works currently shows at Tate Modern, London. It is the first major survey of the artist’s work and spans the twenty-five years of the artist’s career.

The presentation of the logos comes just in time to add much meat to the bone of Antz’ latest project- a very special collaboration between The Teenage Cancer Trust, and the Spanish Association Against Cancer with plans currently underway to organize at least one on island event this summer in aid of the two well known cancer associations.

In a unique partnership with London’s private members’ club The Groucho Club, who will host a pop up club at Sa Talaia rural hotel, the first event will take place on 16^th August and the second two days later, on 18^th August.

With Antz, who kicked cancer to the kerb himself some 16 years ago, at the helm of this particular ship, he’s said to be delighted to be given the chance to collaborate for the good of both the Teenage Cancer Trust and the AECC as part of the Groucho Club’s contribution to the island. ‘Giving Back’, Antz calls it. No better man for the job.

Sue Mari, Vice President for the ASOCIACION ESPAÑOLA CONTRA EL CANCER had this to say about the upcoming project: “We are very excited about the proposed project in August with Antz and the Groucho Club and very grateful that they have considered raising funds for the association. There are an increasing number of cancer patients in Ibiza and Formentera who need our help and the funds raised will enable us to meet their specific needs. We look forward to the project developing”. So do we.

ANTZ ON FIRE: SUMMER 2012

Paul Rudd, one of the TOP 50 DJ’s in the UK, and labelled as “one of dance music’s hottest new DJ’S” [Richard Lee, Mastermix UK], has now been selected by judges to compete in the Unsigned One-to-Watch category of MTV’s ‘Brand New For 2012’ competition.

He is one of the few DJs to be selected in this initial list, and has the chance to follow in the footsteps of Jessie J, Tinie Tempah and Lady Gaga, to win the backing of the world’s biggest music TV channel, MTV. Voting for the competition opened on 9^th December and will close on 8^th January 2012. Paul, 32, from Dartford, Kent, has been steadily building his reputation as a world class DJ since winning 'Search for a Star' at the Capital Radio Cafe in Leicester Square with Neil Fox and gaining his first residency at Galaxy Nightclub, London. From there he has wowed clubbers across Europe with his live performances at various high profile clubs, as well top dance events in Ibiza including DJing with the world famous Hed Kandi. Paul is currently working in Britannia Row Studios, London with legendary music producer Tony Matthew (Soul 2 Soul, Kylie, JLS) on his debut album, ‘Sound Of London’.

Circus's Easter Party with Carl Cox Review

Circus brought a veritable DJ fest to the Masque on Easter Sunday, with different genres of dance music coming from every available room, if dance music is your thing then this was the place to be. In the main auditorium warming up for Carl Cox was Liverpool's very own Yousef, who brought an initially laid back set rising towards a crescendo of beats and bass with a smattering of the sounds of Ibiza thrown in for good measure, which the crowd were loving and gave them a chance to get their dancing muscles warmed up in preparation for the legendary return of the daddy of dance music, Carl Cox.

It's been six years since Carl Cox has played Circus and from the first track to hit the deck, you could see he meant business. With the relentless rhythmic beat exuding from the speakers and his legendary "oh yes, oh yes,oh yes" shout out, he had the crowd bouncing for all their worth, carrying the transition from one track to another with a seamless fluidity throughout the set. Just when you thought he had taken the crowd to the peak, he upped the anti again and was joining in and quite possibly exuded more energy than the crowd. I have never seen a DJ who looks so happy to be doing this, every inch of this man seems to live for Djing and loves to see the crowd having just as much fun as he is.

You can see why he has become a legend in his own right and afterR over 20 years in the business he still has an amazing zest for it. Although I personally will never be converted fully to the dance side, there is no denying the fact that Carl Cox is an amazing DJ and definitely knows how to work that crowd and keep them wanting more and more.

Following an outstanding year which saw Cream come of age reaching 18 years young as well as celebrate an awesome year of sell out shows from its club events to Creamfields, everyone’s favourite clubbing pioneers Cream have pulled out all the stops for their first event of 2011, which takes place on Saturday 5^th March.

The Main Room will be hosted by one of the biggest DJ’s on the planet Laidback Luke, this leader of the nu-breed pack of DJ/Producers is renowned for his monster tracks and has worked alongside the likes of David Guetta and the Swedish House Mafia to name a few. He will be joined by US electro / tech house producer Wolfgang Gartner, who is one of the few US artistes to have achieved international success over the last few years. Joining these two heavyweights will be Sidney Sampson, famed for his uber successful track ‘Riverside’, Sidney makes his Cream UK DJ debut, having performed a stand out set at Cream in Ibiza last Summer.

The legendary Courtyard will be hosted by everyone’s favourite trance trio Above & Beyond. These global dominators of the trance sound are currently sitting at No.5 in the DJ Mag Top 100, with a hugely loyal following, expect the A&B army to flock to Liverpool for this very special 3 hour set. Joining the boys in the Courtyard will be Irish upstart John O’Callaghan whose fans include the likes of Armin van Buuren and who in 2008 scooped the award for ‘Best Producer’ and ‘Best DJ’ in the Irish Dance Music Awards.

Back by demand, and following their outstanding sets at Cream’s 18^th Birthday in October, we welcome Funkagenda, Chris Lake and Michael Woods who will be taking control of the Annexe. Also joining them will be D.O.D

Cream’s unsung hero residents Gareth Wyn, Andy Mac, Anthony Probyn, Lee Ellis, Rob Harnetty and Jemmy also join the bill.
