Chvrches @ Liverpool Music Week - Review

Liverpool Music Week came to a close on Friday night and Camp and Furnace hosted the internationally famed Glasgow trio Chvrches for their first ever Liverpool gig and the capacity crowd gave them a wonderful welcome.

So eagerly awaited was the gig, that there was a queue to get in to the location itself.

The trio – Mayberry on vocals, Iain Cook and Martin Doherty played all 13 of the tracks on last year’s debut album The Bones of What You Believe backed by a huge and impressive neon and strobe light show, which lit the room up like a Christmas tree.

Lead singer Mayberry performed with vigour and enthusiasm, and for a petite little figure she certainly had no lack of energy on stage and her rapport with the crowd was obvious, taking time out between songs to chat on to the crowd.

Obviously the signature tracks Recover and The Mother We Share got the biggest response but all of the tracks played were greeted with a wonderful warm reception. Ending with an encore of 3 more songs only heightened the intensity of the gig and left the audience wanting more.

The set came in just under an hour but this was the ideal time for the band to influence the crowd of fans and first timers to Chvrches alike and was a fitting end to what has been, from all accounts, a very successful 10th year for Liverpool Music week. 

With this band closing the event they have certainly upped their game.

Liverpool music prize The GIT Award 2015 returns plus Launch Party

Liverpool’s premier new music prize The GIT Award is back for its fourth successive year. 

The process to find the 12 shortlisted GIT Award 2015 nominees opens today ahead of the official award launch event which will take place at Liverpool Music Week's closing party on Saturday 1 November 2014. 

The GIT Award winner will be announced at a showcase ceremony at The Kazimier on Saturday 4 April 2015, featuring nominees and special guests. 

The GIT Award, dubbed by the NME as the ‘Scouse Mercury Prize,’ is the only prize of its kind in the UK, championing vital new talent within Merseyside’s eclectic music community, pushing innovative musicians right across the world. 

The overall winner of the GIT Award 2015 will receive a cash prize of £1000. 

The fourth GIT Award recipient will follow in the footsteps of previous winners Loved Ones (2012), Baltic Fleet (2013) and  last year's victor Forest Swords, who due to touring commitments drafted in reggae legend Lee Scratch Perry to collect his prize. 

A special Inspiration Award, recognising significant outstanding achievement in Merseyside’s music industry will also be presented. The 2014 Inspiration Award went to the team behind Africa Oye while previous recipients include Hillsborough Justice Collective (2013) and the directors of the Kazimier club (2012). 

This year's GIT Award launch is on Saturday 1 November 2014 at one of the city's most vital emerging clubs, 24 Kitchen Street, in the Baltic Triangle as part of Liverpool Music Week's closing party. It is headlined by the winner of the very first GIT Award One To Watch prize, Lapsley. 

In a little under nine months, 18-year-old Merseysider, Lapsley (aka Holly Lapsley Fletcher) has seen her music played on Radio 1 and 6 Music, played Glastonbury, racked up widespread national print coverage and over one million plays on her SoundCloud page despite having yet to sign a record deal. 

Alongside Lapsley, and in keeping with the GIT Award's ethos, also performing at 24 Kitchen Street are a raft of artists who are gaining buzz in their home city and further afield. They include electronic artist VEED, experimental duo Queen Maud and avant-garde fusionists Chemistry Lane. There will be additional DJ sets by acclaimed Liverpool-based, Irish producer or:la. 

Speaking ahead of her headline set, Lapsley said: "It's great to be a part of the GIT Award 2015 launch at Liverpool Music Week. I love playing in my home town and having won the GIT Award One To Watch last year it's wonderful to have the support once again." 

Launched at Liverpool Music Week in November 2011, the GIT Award, founded by Liverpool-based blog Getintothis is now an annual fixture on the Merseyside music scene, supported by musicians, industry figures and national media. 

Among the judging panel during the GIT Award’s three years were NME, 6 Music’s Tom Ravenscroft, The Quietus, The Guardian, Liverpool Football Club, Q Magazine, Vice Magazine, Creation Records boss Alan McGee and the cornerstones of Liverpool’s music scene. 

Liverpool Music Week director, Mike Deane, added: "It's great to be once again hosting the GIT Award launch at Liverpool Music Week. Both organisations are dedicated to championing adventurous and exciting artists from Merseyside, reflected perfectly in our diverse GIT Award stage at this year's Music Week closing party." 

Open to all artists and bands from or based in Merseyside, the GIT Award has showcased the region’s rich musical diversity, from the thriving hip hop scene to its electronica artists, from its long-established country and roots community to punk, folk and metal. 

Getintothis editor and founder of the GIT Award, Peter Guy, said: “It's great to be back for a fourth year. The GIT Award has consistently shone a light on the first-rate music emanating from within Merseyside - and it's through the passion of the judging panel and the small but excellent team which put it together that those artists and their work are pushed to the forefront of the national music industry's consciousness.

GIT Award in Liverpool Official Launch this Friday at LMW Closing Party

SOME cities have wonderful pop music histories, some might be lucky enough to enjoy successful periods in the future, but few can confidently say, they have both.

Liverpool is one of a select bunch of cities that can. Like London, New York, Chicago, Detroit and Los Angeles, it can accurately claim to have changed the complexion of modern music.

Now, a new prize, the GIT Award (named after the popular local music blog Getintothis - www.getintothis.co.uk), is about to recognise the best of the future crop of Liverpool musicians who may go on to do what Scousers have been doing for more than half a century – changing the course of history.

As award-winning writer and Word Magazine associate editor Paul Du Noyer, author of the peerless history of the city’s pop music culture, Liverpool Wondrous Place, says, “Music is not just the heritage but the heartbeat of Liverpool.”

But, it’s not just about rock and roll and the guitar bands the city has mostly been famed for, the GIT Award will celebrate Liverpool's current rich musical diversity. From the thriving hip hop scene to its electronica artists, from its long-established country and roots community to punk, folk and metal, the GIT Award is open to all.

Peter Guy, Liverpool ECHO journalist and editor of Getintothis, says, “Think of it as the Scouse Mercury Prize - but, the only criteria being that it has a clear connection with Liverpool; ie: the record was made, produced or recorded by Liverpudlians. "Unlike the Mercurys, there will be a transparent judging panel and as many grass roots musicians won't record a full album during the course of a year, we're asking for four tracks be submitted to be eligible for entry - think of it as an old school four-track EP."

And the prize? It's a little belter. Sandhills Studio is offering a day's free recording time with a top producer, while the winners will play next year's Liverpool Sound City and Liverpool Music Week.

Vice Magazine, meanwhile, has asked Getintothis to promote an exclusive gig at their London-based bar, The Old Blue Last, featuring the winners. On top of this, film-maker Ian Gamester, who has been shortlisted for the prestigious Virgin Media Shorts film, will make the band's video promo which will be screened by Picturehouse at FACT’s boutique Box cinema for the winners and their nearest and dearest.

The GIT Award will have an official launch at Liverpool Music Week's spectacular closing party at the Contemporary Urban Centre on November 11 with the 12 nominees announced next spring before the winner is unveiled days before Liverpool Sound City 2012 where they will feature on the Getintothis stage.

The Liars @ The Static Gallery

As part of Liverpool Music week, The Liars are one of the highlights. The American group have been known for the dramatic styles in music and the potential for doing things off the cuff when playing live means that the anticipation for them has been high and with them running late on the night this only added to it.

When the group eventually emerge there is no messing about. Straight into the first track and suddenly you realise what they mean by dramatic styles. It almost sounds like the musicians are playing their own songs individual to each other but yet combining that to create one linear tune. Lead singer Angus Andrew’s vocals are spine tingling with screams that are primal and come from deep within. With drums beating loud and fast and a bass line to match, it sounds like a free for all. Each member of the band doing their own thing.

Although the crowd that had come to see the liars enjoyed it, I have to admit it wasn’t my kind of thing. Maybe it’s my age but I like my music constructed and concise. I like to be able to understand the vocals and at times it did seem the band were just creating a noise and the overwhelming sound of the 2 drum beats seemed to drown out the rest of the band. I admire them for doing their own thing but, for me the only thing I left with was ear ache.

The Drums & Liars Just Added To LMW 2010

The UK’s biggest indoor winter music festival kicks off on 29^th October and we are pleased to announce more acts to this years ever growing line up.

Named as one of the BBC’s ‘Sound of 2010’ and winners of the Philip Hall Radar award at this year’s NME Awards, Brooklyn four-piece The Drums are one of the most exciting new young bands to come out of New York this century. Their unique flavour of West Coast surf riffs and infectious lyrics has struck a chord with audiences and critics alike, selling out their entire forthcoming UK tour. They come to Liverpool on Tuesday 2^nd November and will headline the O2 Academy.

Another act just announced for this year’s festival are Liars. This New York dance-punk trio have been making records for over a decade drawing from the late 1970’s British post-punk movement to much critical acclaim. Having just released their fifth album ‘Sisterworld’ the band are about to embark on a UK tour performing tracks from the record as well as debuting music from their brand new remix EP featuring Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. They play Liverpool Music Week - their only northern show - at Static Gallery on Saturday 13^th November.

The UK’s biggest indoor winter music festival kicks off on 29^th October and we are pleased to announce details for this year’s Liverpool Music Week free show agenda.

This year LMW HQ has delivered one of their most cutting edge line ups ever, which will feature performances from the likes of Leftfield, Efterklang, Chase & Status, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Warpaint, Hadouken, Beardyman and K’naan. To wrap up proceedings, we’re thrilled to announce Warp Records’ !!! Chk Chk Chk is the final ticketed show to be announced for the run of this year’s debut shows at The Stanley Theatre and their first Liverpool show in over 7 years on 31^st October.

However this year the multi-venue festival - that this week has also been nominated as Best UK Metropolitan Festival in the UK Festival Awards - is proud to announce one of the most exciting free line-ups in the event’s 8 year history, with a selection of the UK’s freshest artists at the one of the city’s most lively young music hotspots - MOJO.

After their sell-out debut Liverpool show in May, Darwin Deez return to open the festival’s activities at MOJO. After huge success with the first single releases from their debut album – and already a firm favourite with the Liverpool crowd, the Deez gang will bring their music, moves and Radar Detectors to kick off the festival free shows in style on Friday October 29^th.

The free music agenda has always been an integral part of the festival’s blueprint, and this year audiences will also be able to get the chance to see exciting new acts such as Sleigh Bells, Field Music, Egyptian Hip Hop, O Children, Chapel Club, and Los Campesinos! all taking place at MOJO between 29^th Oct – 15^th Nov.

Also at MOJO is what will be one of the most anticipated of our free shows. Miles Kane will make his Liverpool solo debut, since his international success with The Last Shadow Puppets. This show takes place on Thursday 11^th November..

Another serious highlight of the free show agenda comes from one of Liverpool Music Week’s favourite sons. John Power will return with Cast to play in the performance space at BBC Radio Merseyside. John has a special affiliation with the festival since his legendary show back in 2005 where he was joined on stage with La’s bandmate Lee Mavers. This unique performance from Cast, especially for LMW, will precede their full UK tour including 3 sold-out o2 Academy Liverpool dates later in the month. LMW Director Mike Deane said “We are delighted at the agenda we have pulled together for 2010. Important headline artists will fly in (out of festival season) from all over the world to play alongside the city’s most important Scousers of today.
