Lightning Seeds Headliners Chagstock Festival

Lightning Seeds announced as Friday Headliners at Chagstock Festival

CHAGSTOCK FESTIVAL are delighted to announce that Lightning Seeds are the latest addition to their 2014 line-up. They will headline the main stage on Friday night.

Lightning Seeds are a Liverpudlian band fronted and formed by Ian Broudie. They’ve had 12 top 20 UK hits including Pure, Change, Sugar Coated Iceberg, You Showed Me and 1996 football anthem Three Lions. Ian Broudie and the Lightning Seeds have released seven studio albums to date – six as Lightning Seeds and one Ian Broudie solo album.

Also on the bill are million-selling alt-rock legends, The Waterboys, who will headline the main stage on Saturday night.

Formed 30 years ago by Mike Scott, The Waterboys became famous for their powerful live performances and majestic albums such as A Pagan Place and This Is The Sea, which included their biggest hit The Whole Of The Moon.

Chagstock is one of the Westcountry’s best-loved festivals. Set in 70 acres of farmland on the edge of Dartmoor, Chagstock is renowned for its stunning location, diverse line-up of artists and non-corporate, family friendly atmosphere. Chagstock showcases the very best music, food and entertainment that the Westcountry and the UK have to offer.

After selling out the entire allocation of early bird tickets in record time, all tickets, camping options and vehicle passes for this year's festival are now on sale at www.chagstock.info

The first acts confirmed for 2014 are Saturday headliners, The Waterboys, legendary 2-Tone band, The Selecter; Alt-Folksters, The Moulettes and award winning Canadian band The Stanfields, who blend hard rock with traditional atlantic folk. The wonderfully chaotic high-energy Balkan folksters Sheelanagig will headline the marquee stage on Friday night. Also on the bill are hotly-tipped English blues-rockers Sam Green and The Midnight Heist and local Okehampton rockers, Downfall. Chagstock’s house band, New Crisis also perform their traditional main stage slot.

This year’s Fancy Dress Theme will be ‘The Wild West!’

Last year’s festival sold out for the second year running, and featured memorable performances from The Boomtown Rats, Billy Bragg and The Mystery Jets amongst many others.

As introduced in 2012 in recognition of the tough economic climate for families, all children under 12 can attend the festival for free (ticket is required). Chagstock’s capacity is once again capped at just 5,000 tickets to ensure that its intimate, family-friendly atmosphere is maintained.

Simon Ford Chagstock Festival organiser says, “I am delighted that Chagstock has now sold out two years in a row! With the announcement of Lightning Seeds, alongside acts such as The Waterboys, The Selecter and many others, the whole team is confident that 2014 will be our best year yet and we will sell out once again! As always we are sticking to the non-corporate vibe and family friendly atmosphere with loads of great and varied music, food and entertainment”

Weekend Tickets are priced at £75 (Adults), £50 (Under 18's),
Under 12’s are free (ticket is still required). A Family Ticket for 2 Adults and 2 Under 18s is £210.
Camper / Caravans / Live-in Vehicles just £15 per vehicle

Their football anthem, Three Lions, has twice been at number one in different versions recorded with Frank Skinner and David Baddiel.

Following our announcement that we will be holding a fundraising night on March 30th at Nation in Liverpool helping us to remember those who lost their lives in the A3 coach crash following last year’s Bestival, we’re very pleased to be able to announce a whole host of Liverpool’s finest and Bestival’s best for Bestival At Nation.

Heading up the live music action on the night will be Ian McCulloch with Ian Broudie, two Liverpool legends who originally found fame in the early 80s Eric’s scene. Between them Echo and the Bunnymen and The Lighting Seeds have racked up numerous chart hits and become part of the fabric of rock n roll and the pairs own musical relationship stretches as far back as the Bunnymen’s debut album Crocodiles in 1980, so it’s a real honour for us that they’ve agreed to take part in our fundraiser.  We’ll also have the previously announced The Cuban Brothers dropping the party funk and b-boy moves in their own inimitable style, electronic trio Is Tropical, electro rockers Killaflaw and sets from the hotly tipped The Tea Street Band and future guitar duo Hoodie Ledbetter.

As anyone who has been to Bestival will know it’s not just about the music and we have some real treats lined-up for you including a spoken word set from the world’s most lauded trafficker of illicit substances, Howard Marks aka Mr. Nice. Plus we’ll have a rare screening of one of the best concert films from recent years, The Chemical Brothers: Don't Think.

In the spiritual home of Cream we will of course have a corking DJ line-up that will include a very special guest synonymous with rocking the dancefloor in the past 20 years, with Bestival curator and Radio 1 leftfield behemoth Rob da Bank, a selection of Liverpool’s finest including Steve Parry, Chris McGee, Dave Whelan, Phil Fearon and James Silk plus Bestival’s own Little Chief.

The monies raised from the night will go to the immediate parents or guardians of festivalgoers Michael Molloy and Kerry Ogden who lost their lives in the accident and Zach Washington-Young who suffered life changing injuries.

Tickets priced £16.25 (including booking fee) are available now from Ticketline. Please join us on Saturday 30th March.

Ian McCulloch Epstein Theatre Liverpool review

Ian McCulloch Epstein Theatre review

Ian McCulloch Epstein Theatre Liverpool review

Formerly known as the Neptune Theatre, the Epstein theatre has re-opened under the management of SoundCity and they launched it with the announcement of 2 nights with the legendary Ian McCulloch.

Ian, best known for fame with the Echo and the Bunnymen, was joined on stage with Lightning Seeds' Ian Broudie and a 2 piece string section and keyboard player. The set up reminding me of MTV unplugged with the curtain back drop and subdued blue lightning.

The sell out crowd waited patiently for Ian to arrive on stage and greeted him with rapturous applause when he eventually did and he wasted no time getting them eating out of his hand. Playing through a set list of classic bunnymen hits and solo stuff, Ian's voice was raspy which added to the intimacy of the night with the acoustics of the theatre amplifying it clearly and crisply.

Running through hits such as Bring on the Dancing horses before showcasing his new stuff starting with Pro Patria Mori which he self proclaimed as being a "classic" already and to be fair it was typical McCulloch material with angst ridden protest lyrics which play well to his vocals and the string section adding an extra melancholy to the song.

Ending the set on a rapturous note with the always brilliant Nothing lasts forever which prompted the whole theatre to sing along culminating in McCulloch visibly choking up and on the edge of tears before leaving the stage to thunderous applause and the demand for more, which they got in the form of 2 encores covering songs such as Wild Side, and Lips like Sugar the audience had enough of sitting about and rose to their feet to dance in the aisles and out sing the man himself finally leaving to a standing ovation. This was a masterclass performance from a class act.

The Epstein theatre returned with a bang and a most welcome return it is. If they continue to have gigs of this calibre, then I can see a bright future for the venue. The 300 odd seating capacity being ideal for those close-up gigs and with the option of balcony seating/standing ideal for more. Long may the Epstien theatre flourish.

Lightning seeds hometown gig Liverpool 02 Academy Sat 12 Feb

Lightning seeds hometown gig Liverpool 02 Academy Sat 12 Feb

Door time: 7.00pm

£22.50 advance Ticketweb/ www.o2academyliverpool.co.uk

The Lightning Seeds were formed by Ian Broudie in 1989. After being involved with numerous bands in post-punk Liverpool, including Big in Japan with, amongst others, Budgie and Holly Johnson, and a collaboration with Paul Simpson called Care which resulted in an album and several singles, he decided to go it alone.

The Lightning Seeds have been entertaining audiences for over 20 years, and it’s easy to see why when witnessing their unmissable live performance. Ian Broudie conceived the band and penned the majority of the critically acclaimed debut album  Cloudcuckooland, featuring the hit single Pure. The band’s 1994 album, Jollification, saw the Lightning Seeds garner the attention they rightly deserved, spawning the hit singles Lucky You, Change, Perfect and Marvellous. In 2006 they released of The Very Best of the Lightning Seeds and in 2010 the band returned to the live arena with a full UK tour  and studio album ‘Four Winds’, the first crop of Lightning Seeds songs in 10 years.

“Growing up in Liverpool in the Sixties was like being in the centre of the earth. I was going to the football and the Kop would be singing ‘She Loves You’.” Says Ian “ Both my brothers had a lot of records: Dylan, Cream, bluesy guitar players. Plus I had a little transistor radio and got Radio Caroline, from when pop music was very free. Then it was the Seventies and Bowie played The Liverpool Empire and it was as if everybody who was going to go on and make music in Liverpool was at this gig. For me it was about Roxy Music, Frank Zappa, and, like everyone in Liverpool then and now, Captain Beefheart, Pink Floyd, Love and the Velvet Underground.”

Ian Broudie is part of the fabric of British pop culture. Born in the Fifties, child of the Sixties, crucial player in Liverpool punk in the Seventies, alternative rock production genius in the Eighties, pop star in the Nineties and Godfather figure to some of Liverpool’s new leading lights of the Noughties. He was the studio magician behind the legendary Echo And The Bunnymen and has lately sprinkled stardust over The Coral and Zutons. And mingling in the midst of all of this music and creativity came The Lightning Seeds, with a string of classic hit singles, and a little football song (‘Three Lions’) still bellowed out from the terraces at England matches.
